Live from Tampa Bay: The Falcons seek to Buc(k) a trend

I'm not exactly sure what this evocative photo evokes, except that I could use some Gatorade. (AP photo)

I'm not exactly sure what this evocative image evokes, except a thirst for Gatorade. (AP photo)

Tampa — The Falcons are 9-1, but by my reckoning they’ve played one really good game in their past seven. (The one: At Philadelphia ahead of Hurricane Sandy.) Then again, they’ve won five of those six not-really-good games, so what’s the problem?

This: A team wants to be playing well in December, so as to keep playing well into January/February. The Falcons know this better than anyone, having seen consecutive seasons ended by teams that weren’t, as of Thanksgiving, anywhere near locks to qualify for postseason fun and frolic. We know already that these Falcons will make the playoffs. What we don’t know is if they’ll fare any better once there.

Today marks Game 1 of a loaded (and shortened) week. They play the Buccaneers, who’ve won four in a row, and then they play the Saints, who’ve won five of six, on Thursday night. Sweep the week and we won’t be quibbling, at least not so much. Get swept and the carping will be unconfined.

Confession: A couple of weeks back, I suggested this would be the venue for the Falcons’ first loss. As we know, the Saints interceded. Part of me thinks the Falcons are pointing toward this game as another checkpoint, same as they were the game in Philly. Then again, they wanted badly to win in the Superdome, and they didn’t. So here’s what I’m saying, kind of:

If the Falcons are as good as they (and I) think they are, they’ll win this one. But they can’t beat Tampa Bay by half-stepping, or by turning it over six times. They’ll have to play well, and it has been a while since they’ve managed that.

Whatever happens, I’ll be here to watch and comment, and I’d appreciate the company. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

I’m not sure the Falcons will run much. TB has the league’s worst pass defense

How did the Falcons turn so fast into a pass-happy team? Uh…most likely the addition of Dirk Koetter. It is interesting to note that Falcon fans generally prefer 3 yards and a cloud of dust football. The problem is that the Falcons have no balance right now and that will come back to haunt them when they play good teams down the stretch. In short, you can’t put that much pressure on Matty to throw when everyone knows you are going to throw. Just the opposite of the Smith/Mularkey offense of years past.

Couldn’t agree more Mark. All of this will be for not if the Falcons cannot get their mojo back heading into the post-season. If they want the respect they covet, they have got to get their ish together and play a complete game on both sides of the ball. Better tackling and pounding the run (more Rogers please) for starters.

Love my Falcons! Go get ‘em, Fellas!!

Well if the run is out this game then I expect to see a lot more production out of Gonzalez, Jones (is he active today?), and ‘em. Whatever happened to those quick slant passes that Ryan/Gonzalez used to tear up defenses with? Haven’t seen too many of those lately.

I hate using clichés, but this really is a statement game for the Falcons. Going on the road and beating probably the only team who can realistically challenge for the division crown would go a long way toward cementing ATL as a top-tier squad.

Looks like Mike Smith conservative play has crept back in. Extremely predictable like years past, not the high powered New England like offense nor aggresive defense we saw in the first few weeks of the season. They still don’t play with that swagger you are not on our level mentality. Only thing holding Falcons back is mental approach and that starts with M. Smith!

#1 matchup of the day: Freeman vs. Nolan
The Bucs are going to run, so we should just accept that. What will decide the game is how well Nolan can confuse Freeman and induce either turnovers or negative/no gain plays.

Mark: All turnovers are automatically reviewed. What if the Falcons are on defense and recover a fumble and we know it wasn’t a fumble but on the field the refs called it one. Before play is stopped by the refs for review, Mike Smith throws the challenge flag so the play can’t be reviewed. Do the Falcons get the ball minus a 15 yard penalty?

Let’s see what M. Turner did in the offseason: In the news for baby mama drama: Sitting on that fat posterior of his and not getting those extra pounds off-so he’s slow: Hanging out and getting plastered at Magic Ciy and getting a DUI. and the lists goes on. How long will Arther Blank put up with this? I hope Mike Smith is on the hot seat-because I thought he’d be gone this year. The Falcons got new o-line and d-line coaches, but they’re playing and reverting to how they played last year. That’s the definition of insanity: doing the same thing and expecting different results. That king of attitude and play is going to cost them this game and the next two games in the L column. It doesn’t have to be this way, but I blame the whole team for this-including Matt Ryan.

I believe the guys in the Birds’ locker room have both the talent and the confidence to win. This coaching staff has demonstrated an ability to call the right plays to make that happen … and 9 times out of 10, the guys on the field have executed well enough to pull it off. No reason to think that won’t happen today.

Mark Bradley Please respond: Why? Why? Why? do the Falcons run the same ole tired plays with Micheal Turner-when they KNOW that he and their o-line is a liability? Please tell us why? The Falcons have decided to make Micheal Turner the ONLY option on first down. That makes them predictable and it lends itself to their inferior lack of belief in their short yardage running game. Why are they trying to prove to themselves that-this repeated lackluster offensive line will somehow materialize into a power running game-when they just don’t have it on the offensive side of the ball. Mark Bradley-please respond!

All runs on this next drive need to go outside, and they need to be done by either Snelling or Quizz. Well it might seem we won with Luck. But “stats” say we had 4 more first downs, 100 more yards, much better 3rd Down efficiency. Held their vaunted running game and rookie back to 50 yards and 2.4 yards per carry. Had one “extra point type” field goal missed. Seems to me Bucs were more “lucky” to have a chance in the end than the Falcons were “lucky” to win.

Even with the pick, Ryan had a more than respectable day, completing 26 of 32 with a TD … for a rating of 110. The Falcons’ defense held Tampa Bay’s all-rookie RB to 50 yards (exactly half his average). Overall, the visiting team had nearly 100 yards more offense than the home team, in large part because we converted more than 60% of 3rd down opportunities, while allowing the Bucs to convert only 40%. When you consider that TB had won four in a row, and five of their last six, this was a good and impressive win for the visiting team. Virtually every prognosticator I heard or read said that the Falcons would lose this game. I’m glad we still allow the guys to play it out on the field rather than relying on the “experts’” opinions.

I missed that play JSS. But, in the end, penalties count . . .plays / yards from penalties don’t. If it was a screen pass then it still would not have added to his Rushing Yards. It would have helped the Bucs I’m sure. I missed your contain comment in my initial question to you. I’ll live with contain over shut down. But, from the way folks were talking about the Bucs rushing game, and the “weakness” of Falcs rushing D, I’ll have to call it a Big Contain.

White guilt gave them a Katrina super bowl. I’ve never seen NFL refs go in the tank so obviously as they did for the Saints that season. Since then, I view the NFL refs in a entirely different way.

As far as the Falcons, I’ve NEVER jumped off the wagon. You simply need to get it through your thick skull that just because someone criticizes the team when it’s playing poorly doesn’t mean that same someone can’t be a passionate fan of the team. Why is that so hard for you to understand?

Once again the defense was embarrassing. No pressure on the quarterback, no stopping the run, and no pass defense. Once again Asante Samuel and Dunta Robinson didn’t show up to play. I am sure the play that sent Robinson to the locker room was a fluke…he accidentally ran into the runner and then ended up hurt more than the runner. Dunta is a joke…get him out of there. The Falcons will get to the playoffs and peter out again because they have no defense.

Falcons win but I question:
a) Starting Turner as the #1 back… they need a change to Quizz next week and give him a lot more touches;
b) Ryan’s confidence and the team’s confidence in him in the red zone… the pucker factor goes up and they just can’t seem to get into the endzone;
c) Bryant has a bad back… he’s been on the injury report for a few weeks, so how is he going to kick going down the stretch?; and
d) Mike Smith seems to also go ultra-conservative at times…. need to be like the Patriots and keep the pedal to the metal!!!

U are right Dawg. Now on to bigger things…..26 of 33 353 yarda 1 touch 1 int. Nice game Matt. D after the first drive way to take the air out of the running game! Nice D! Tough to win on the road against any NFL team….especially one that had won 5 in a row and was playing for playoff position! Not to mention the only turnover came on the last play of the game! Great to see Quizz playing when it counted the most! Missed two field goals one a chip shot and another a distance! Hey Birds winning games like this make you tough….make you ready for the playoffs! I am wondering why falcons play down/up to their opponents. It makes no sense. Not to take away from the great game TB played, but we should have beat them soundly. Our D gave up too many big plays, and I think that facet(sp) is what will be our undoing come playoff time. Two dropped ints by Samuel, missed tackles by down lineman, poor TE coverage by Milbs, it all will add up gainst the likes of GB,NY,SF or God forbid NO, when those teams come callin come playoff time.

Rick in Macon: not sure you watched the same game that I watched. Dunta and Asante were terrific and played tough all game; that was a helmet-to-helmet hit and Dunta was very good against the run today. AND the defense got some good pressure on Freeman…. you must’ve been drinking, man.

I agree with all those that have said that the Falcons are gritty and tough and have heart. The D played tough – especially Samuel (the dropped INTs not withstanding). However, I’d feel a lot more confident if they could get some kind of aggressive edge, like a killer instinct. They seem to play just well enough to win – which is good. I’m NOT complaining. A win is a win. But, before they get to the playoffs I’d feel a lot better if they would just put someone away when they have the chance. It seems they just let teams hang around until the other team runs out of time. When they’re on the ropes, knock them out.

Obviously I’m glad the Falcons won the game. It’s a good road win against a quality opponent. All that being said, it worries me that we can’t seem to put teams away. Every team in the playoffs will be a good so we can’t afford to “sleep walk” through the first 3qts of the game. Good teams will capitalize on our mistakes.

The best team we’ve beaten all year was Denver. We’ve played better on the road than at home, though we haven’t yet dropped a game at the Dome. As far as this game goes, I try to take this approach with my view on it: We were on the road against a winning team within the division. We didn’t play great, but we did manage to the game. I knew this game would be really tough and I half-expected to lose it. The fact that we didn’t lose it means that we are much closer to finishing off the division and have made it even tougher for anybody else to catch us for homefield advantage. We’re 10-1 and can be better in our overall play. I will take that whenever I can get it.
