On Paul Johnson’s poor early choice and Tech’s lack of fans

This was not the happiest of days for the men of Tech. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

OK, so this was not the happiest of days for the men of Georgia Tech. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

This post is an adjunct to the Georgia Tech column off today’s game, which can be found here.

1. Paul Johnson’s first tactical error came before the game began. Georgia Tech won the coin toss and chose to defer its choice until the second half. This is, we must note, standard coaching procedure. But this was not a standard game. The Yellow Jackets’ only hope rested on their offense and its capacity to steal an early lead and then play keep-away. Instead Johnson chose to put his special teams and his defense on the field first. Malcolm Mitchell returned the kickoff past midfield. Georgia led 7-0 after 63 seconds. When finally Tech exercised its option at the start of the third quarter, it trailed 28-3. Asked about his decision to defer, Johnson said: “Pick your half. They’re going to get it sometime.”

2. Time of possession can be the world’s most misleading statistic. The Jackets held the ball for 21 minutes and 22 seconds of the first half but were outscored by 25 points. The Jackets’ offense did not punt in the first half; neither did it score a touchdown. It mustered 238 first-half yards, which is pretty darn good, but only three points, which was deficient to requirements on a day when Georgia was scoring four touchdowns in five first-half tries. A fumble — actually Bacarri Rambo’s snatch of the ball from Robert Godhigh — defused Tech’s first drive, and an intercepted Vad Lee pass snuffed the third. The half ended, fittingly, with a missed field goal.

3. There were surely fewer visiting fans on hand Saturday than for any Tech-Georgia game since … maybe ever. It was a source of great Bulldog glee that the Jackets returned nearly one-quarter of their allotment of 8,000 tickets, and apparently more than a few of those seats sold by Tech fell into enemy hands. Not counting the Tech band, there couldn’t have been 2,000 folks wearing gold in Sanford Stadium at the opening kickoff. It’s possible some Tech backers came incognito. If so, they made a wise decision.

Also, what does the UGA game announcer mean when he says, “Time out to measure the gain?”

As for attendance, are there worst visitor seats anywhere than Sanford? I have not missed one since 1968. The poor seats (Section 601) and the rude treatment of visitors makes it a trip that we all dread. You should not have to battle your way into a stadium.

There will even be less fans there for the game in Charlotte and then Tech will have eat about 5000 tickets for the bowl game in Texas. The big five star recruit in basketball looks as lost as Tevin and takes as many bad jump shots as Josh Smith. DRad left us in terrible shape and it will be a few years before we recover. The only bright spot is at least I don’t have to leave in Clemson.

GT Letterwinner, interesting that Techies are so successful yet your program can’t sell their luxury seats at Grant Field.

And by the way, your graduates don’t have to be financially successful to attend the ACC Championship Game – more than 8,000 tickets are available on StubHub starting at $5.00. The ACC is barely Division I.

It was obvious today that Tech’s defense is in total disarray. I was hoping they would bring more fans. I like a good-natured back and forth between the fans. When UGA plays at Tech GA fans outnumber Tech fans. It seems athletically Mark it was no contest.

Playing Tech today just added to Georgia’s “weak” schedule. Tech fans make fun of Vandy who totally dominated Wake Forest today beating them worse than Notre Dame did. Florida beats FSU and South Carolina beating Clemson at the moment. I thought the SEC was down this year Oh Wait we have the #2 #3 and #4 team in the country. 4th and Whatever

November 24th, 2012

Paul Johnson is an idiot. It doesn’t matter where or when, if it’s 4th down then he goes for it. Someone should inform him that 99.99% of the broadcasters, sportswriters, fans, players & coaches who witness his patented “4th and Whatever” decisions consider him to be a coaching buffoon.

You DON’T have to go for it on every 4th down…Especially when you’re not moving the ball effectively in the fist place. This is not a insignificant detail. It represents a much larger coaching flaw that resides within Paul Johnson.

It’s so eerily similar to that of Chan Gailey. He is old & stubborn. He doesn’t learn from mistakes. He only does things “his way” and so must everyone else. When asked about game situations and decisions, he quips little one liners that GT fans & alumni have to live with for years. He got the big contract and his personal performance nosedived. He’d rather be fishing than coaching football.

Chan Gailey The Hated set Tech Football back a decade. Al Groh The Useless put our defense behind by 3 years. Paul Hewitt The Moocher put our BB program behind by a decade. Now Paul Johnson The Fustercluck has completely ruined GT Football from recruiting on up to the fan & alumni bases.

No wonder Radakovich headed for the backwoods of SC…..Much of this was done on his watch.

I was a little miffed by all of the trash talking that came this week from Tech. Less about the game and more about calling the SEC over-rated and the ACC under-rated.

Well, there were four match up today.

Georgia – easy win.

Vandy hung 55 on Wake Forest.

Florida handled FSU

And after a quick 14 by Clemson, they are going down 27-17.

Lot of people eating a lot of crow today; including Jimbo Fisher, who complained about the numbers the computers were giving FSU playing that ACC schedule. Turns out the computer was right.

We all know a lot of people who went to Tech or who are Tech fans. They are good people and deserve a better football program than this.

Obviously GT does not have the necessary coaching for Division 1 football. Nor do they have the money to buy out CPJ’s contract. I can careless about GT playing FSU for the ACC Championship. Can you imagine what the Orange Bowl will be like if GT was to upset FSU? GT should do like Miami and let someone else play for the ACC Championship against FSU. GT certainly does not belong in a bowl game this year. Atlanta’s gay football leagues can play better and more competitive football than Georgia Tech.

Maybe Georgia Southern can build up to major college football some day and attract the same athletes that UGA can and begin to offer some real in-state competition. But a mid-level ACC team with Tech’s academic standards will never be in a position to rival UGA in football. Those days are long gone, it’s about time you realized it.

COACH – just complain/comment about anything the DAWGS or their announcer does since GT has no chance to beat the DAWGS. Also, regarding the poor seats, GT can’t fill their on pitiful little stadium so what does it matter where you sit at Sanford. If you get treated poorly it’s because Most GT fans are such snobs – guess it’s the academic thing again huh? If you are all so smart, why can’t you figure out what is wrong with your football team!

There were GT fans at the game today, the tickets we received from Ugag had us all scattered throughout the dwag stadium. There were quite a few Tech fans in the upper decks, but from up top the players can’t hear us cheer for them since we are dispersed throughout the upper levels. Who wants to pay $75 to sit in the 600 section of the dwag stadium where you can’t see? This is one of the many reasons Tech people hate going to athens!

Sayeth “Coach” @ 9:12 p.m.: “As for attendance, are there worst [sic] visitor seats anywhere than Sanford? I have not missed one [sic] since 1968. The poor seats (Section 601) and the rude treatment of visitors makes it a trip that we all dread. You should not have to battle your way into a stadium.”

Perhaps UGA should remove 60,000 seats so you can see better? I remember pillars blocking the view fans had at Grant Field, before that stadium was “improved.” “Battle to get in?” No doubt all those paying customers to walk through were a challenge and sight you don’t have in Atlanta. Kudos to the genius at Tech who removed those Grant Field seats, which time has shown could not be sold, or even given away (though Tech is adroit at giving away football games).

Rude? Hershel Walker described the Tech fans as the worst he played before. I quit going to games at Tech regularly in 1982, and haven’t missed too much excitement (or many UGA losses there). I did see Tech lose to Furman in 1983 and tie Furman in 1986. You folks call those the “Glory Days,” right?

Sounds like sour grapes. Perhaps you’d be more comfortable at home in 2014.

Mark: TOP was certainly misleading in this game. 39.96 vs 20.04 should have been enough to keep the GT defense fresh and rested. The problem was they don`t have a
defense that can stop anybody much less an offense like UGA. Also six turnovers
did not help the offense. All of that said, I believe that an offense like Tech runs
should win most of its games when it dominates TOP by 20 minutes.

Notre Dame: SAT 660-750/680-770/650-740; ACT 32-34; 8,444 undergraduate students.

Perhaps there are other reasons Tech does not play good football.

I was a staunch defender of the CPJ hire. As painful as it is to admit. I was wrong. I had no idea how bad the recruiting would become. It is sad to see a program with such a storied history and tradition sink so low. But time changes things. Hopefully, the 21st Century will see the rise of my alma mater, Georgia Southern. The state of Georgia is too rich in high school football to have only one serious FBS competitor. Unfortunately, this is where bad decisions at Tech has left us, going back to Bobby Dodd’s decision to leave the SEC. Great coach. Terrible decision for the program. There have been a few peaks since then, but they were only for fleeting moments. In general, the course has been downward.

When I went to GT my thought was to get a good education and have a lot of fun supporting Athletics for the rest of my life. The supporting Athletics has stopped because I disagree with the course GT has taken Academically vs Athletically. We could be Stanford or Michigan but we were pushed into the International Research MIT like model. Well MIT is private and GT is public. I think being public means that GT needs to support the taxpayers who support it and offer enough Majors that are non technical as necessary to keep the per cent of students high from Georgia. UGA has around 90% Georgia students and a fast growing 800 Engineering students College. Gt needs a similar percent if they are continued public supported. I think the best idea is to combine GT and GSU, one mile apart, and save Georgia a lot of tax dollars. A side effect of this would be to help improve fans and athletics as a whole. This combined University should be moved outside Downtown on a MARTA line and the valuable downtown real estate sold. Just an idea folks.

GT Girl, ….. seats… yes Tech downsized their stadium to have better odds at outnumbering opponents fans long ago. They issue seats far from the field. They do treat fans well if you go through the Athletic Association (if you know them). The same happens at UGA for the well behaved fans. Tech acquired tickets for me to the Notre Dame game in Ireland for an employee and referred to me as a Tech grad in one of their emails. I guess there are some UGA grads Tech will try to claim as their own.

Excuse me there, Mr. Bradley-know-it-all: but winning coin toss and electing to defer to second half IS NOT in any way considered a choice to put special teams and defense on the field first, as you so stated. The opponent, with first half choice, could still elect to kickoff. There is no rule stating they must receive. (That’s enough mistakes right there, I will not even bother reading remainder of the column.)

Mark, Good job as always. Losing is one thing but you nailed when you stated the rest of the team looks lost. It’s one thing when you compete but lose because of a few bad breaks, some excellent athletes making plays on the other team, etc. but to look so poorly prepared and coached? That’s what is so troubling long term. Somehow, I get the feeling that even if we had 4-5 stars at every position, we’d still look lost on defense and special teams. Maybe we wouldn’t get thrown around but we wouldn’t look solid and well-coached either.

Being a head coach is about running a successful football program not just the offense. And – this is the real depressing part – we are NOT getting better.

While getting top level recruits is important, it’s not sufficient to guarantee success. And, rating recruits is a highly inexact science. David Pollack, a 3 time all-america and first round NFL draft choice, was a 3*. Odell Thurman, Clint Boling and Ben Jones were Rivals 3*, and Drew Butler was rated 2*. All were college stars who were given the opportunity to play in the NFL, and most did quite well. Conversely, USC (So. Cal) consistently averages 4.3* in its recruiting class, typically highest in the country, but lacks results commensurate with those ratings.

Young men want to play in the best conference possible because it may result in greater exposure, greater chance at playing professionally, winning championships, and personal and monetary gratification. Once again, tech fans, all 20 of you, get on the blog and try to make disparaging remarks about the team that once again, has dismantled your team. It has got to be sad knowing you are obligated by law, to get your butt handed to you each year after the the first big holiday of the year, time after time.
There is hope for both tech. and the ACC though. Notre Dame is going to be part of the ACC in football, so at least you will have one quality team. Of course, with the likes of Maryland leaving the ACC to play in a conference where they will get solidly beat to death each year, you should then realize just how bad it is. Right now, the only thing that makes the ACC have any relevance at all in the college football world, is the bowl tie in with the Orange Bowl. Doesn’t say much for either the bowl, or the conference that has that tie in. I am sure that most conferences would welcome tech. as a member because all teams like a patsy game each year, and tech. will surely be one for the foreseeable future for any good teams. It is sad, when you tally up the years performance and realize that Tech. is even worse than GSU and they are an FCS team. All of the excuses you can come up with, such as hard academic standards, and such, don’t matter a hill of beans, as other tough academic standard schools out perform you each year, and yes tech. fans, they actually win meaningful football games. Accept your place as a second division team, in a second division conference, and don’t try so hard to offend UGA and its’ fans. It just makes you look that much more childish and inferior. Win on the field and then you have something to brag about on these blogs.

Yes we stink. The players are not motivated. I’ve seen them come out at home 3 times w/o any emotion this year…and got their a$$e$ beat.Even if you have 5 star recruits, motivation is mandatory.

As for the lack of Tech fans at the game, I attended a few in Athens and the majority of the fans were civil. But there is a large group that should not be let out in public. I swore off ever going to UGA for a FB fame long ago. I have been on campus many times for classes and seminars. But the group of yahoos who don’t have any class is the reason I do not attend. It is very apparent GT simply does not have the talent to compete against any top tier program from any conference let alone UGA. Some here want to blame academic standards. Bulllsheeet! It is always about coaching. Always. Look at freakin ND. They were worse than us 5 years ago. They bring in Kelly from Cincy and boom they are in the NC game. Same time frame CPJ was hired and has taken GT in the opposite direction. Let me add here, ND has just as high or higher academics than GT. Also no great talents were looking to play at ND either. The program was dust. It took a coach with a vision and knowledge.

CPJ simply doesn’t have what it takes to get GT back to being seriously competitive. It is time to make a change next year. Won’t make any difference for 2013 as the recruiting is in place. He is coaching without an extension next year so it will be his last. If I was the incoming AD the first thing I would do is notify CPJ he is in a lame duck year and his contract will not be renewed.

Rock on……VT is in the early exploratory stages of leaving the ACC. Just trust me on that.

Relative to Tech’s recruiting: If you were a 5-star defensive recruit, would you want to go to Tech and have the O-line et al firing off at your knees in every practice? And in this day where the NFL is the ultimate objective, could you get a 5-star QB to go to Tech and run that offense?

Great game for UGA. GT fans must remember you win with defense. Offense is nice but
D wins game. GT must recover from Al’s weak defense. Give them time. Also for you idiot’s
that don’t understand. Your pecentages of winning are much greater when your offense , like GT,
goes on 4th down. When the other team will be back to where the ball is at within 1 minute makes the decision easy. PJ will get there just gonna have to work on the recruiting game. UGA went through this for 10 years just lingering into middle of the pack with SEC East.

Recruiting has been a problem for Johnson. He has brought in some kids that can’t take the heat and it shows, especially on D. I have never seen so many kids get out of the way so they wouldn’t have to make a lick. D is more guts and who wants it and the TECH doesn’t want it. Who are you people afraid of? The boogie man? UGA doesn’t have much in state competition. Their biggest recruiting rivals are out of state and that is pitiful. Also pitiful on UGA that it took 32 years to even be in position to play for a national title again with no in state competition.

But why do you GT alumni allow it to go on? Thought alot of you were CEO’s and CFO’s of companies? But yet, it seems you allow some inbred morons in Athens call the shots in the state of Georgia, why?

Can we finally put the argument to rest… The ACC is a best, a basketball conference, and at worst the laughing stock of all BCS automatic qualifying conferences. If G-Tech pulls off a miracle this coming weekend would the ACC really be able to look anyone in the country in the eyes and send a 7&6 team to the Orange Bowl? Seriously? There about 3 dozen teams that are all more deserving and that will play a better game than Tech.

The ACC just sent its 2 best and 1 of its supposedly betters up against the SEC in head-to-head match-ups and their 2 “best” both had home field advantage. All 3 of them lost and lost in fairly convincing fashion. Tech was reminded that they truly are nothing more than the “North Avenue Trade School,” FSU got a meaningless touchdown late to make the score look closer than the game really was and Clemson lost a close one to Carolina, but the Gamecocks had their top quarterback on the bench with a bad ankle and their best running back on crutches or it wouldn’t even have been as close as it was.

Can we please get rid of the Automatic qualifiers and the maximum number of allowable teams from any one conference stipulations from the BCS and just put the best teams in the country in the games. Even though the play-off will help, it still doesn’t solve the problem of unworthy conference champions from automatic qualifiers taking up a space that they didn’t earn and don’t deserve.

I go on record ; Georgia is not even a top ten team. They played two good (not great) teams all year, one humbled them and the other only lost (barely) because they turned the ball over six times, loosing it four of the six. The rest of their schedule was composed of average and below average teams. If there ever was a cupcake schedule Georgia had it. To see this team ranked number three in the nation is a disgrace. The only hope Georgia has in beating the Tide is for the Tide to beat themselves. I look for a real humbling beatdown for Georgia in the SEC championship game. I also see a large portion of your fans as classless and pure trash. I also believe your coach is as phony as a three dollar bill; if you talk it you should live it. There are the always going to be some rude or obnoxious fans anywhere you go but the fans in Athens are basically OK. When the best reason to keep a coach is that you can’t afford to fire him, it’s over. Paul Johnson is finished at Georgia Tech, it’s just a matter of when he’ll be let go and under what circumstances.

Here’s Johnson’s record against the meat of Georgia Tech’s schedule:

1-4 vs. UGA
1-4 vs. VT
4-2 vs. Clemson (lost 2 of last 3; one win vacated)
1-4 vs. Miami
0-4 vs. bowl opponents (doubtless soon to be 0-5)

That’ll be 7-19 at the end of this year. Throw-in his record against Florida State after next week’s pummeling and it’ll be 9-20.

I hope Mark Bradley actually reads this. For the record, I am a Tech fan and I was at the game. For the record, there were not a lot of Georgia fans missing at the game too. However, from a Tech perspective, I have been to Athens to watch Tech play six times in my life. Tech is 3-3 in those games. However, I doubt I ever will again. It’s not the obnoxiousness of the fans, Tech has some of those too. The problem is that it’s a hassle and a half to get up to Athens and back. We left yesterday and 9 a.m. from Tucker and were in our seats at 11:20. We stayed for all but the final minute of the game, say 3:15 p.m. and were back home by 6:15. It was the least favorite commute of my life. If you go to a game at Bobby Dodd, I can leave my hous at 3 p.m. and be at in my seat by 3:40. Trust me, I have done it. Plus, the game experience at Tech is far better overall. There are more concessions, you are closer to the game, and you get back home in a reasonable time. A lot of Tech folks I know refuse to to go Athens for a lot of reasons. I have decided to join them. Even if Tech wins, it’s not worth it in time, effort, and resurces. I know Mark Bradley and the Bulldung Nation will think my take is bogus. If so, so be it. However, it’s the truth.

As for rude fans I had one jerk try to spit on my wife and a 65+ year old member of our group was jumped in the bathroom. By 3 “Bulldog” fans, he was struck in the head and knocked to the ground. The campus police wanted to take our man to jail until a decent UGA fan who was a witness came forward and told the cops the truth. I don’t mind some good natured support of your team but Ga fans are considered the worst by everyone. Ask any of their visitors I am sure all schools have a few bad fans but UGA has been. I will say what the rest of the Tech fans will not, the reason we do not come to Athens is because you are a bunch of horses asses. No fanbase in the entire country is less fun to be around than yours.

In light of the holiday season, you can all rot in hell.

Tech fans want to complain about the way that they are treated… in Athens or wherever. Maybe if you all didn’t run your mouths all year long about Tech’s superiority as an academic institution, and run down UGA for anything and everything that you can think of whether it is legitimate or not you wouldn’t get your inferiority at football shoved in your face in the most obnoxious way possible.

In recent years Tech’s wins over UGA have been so few and far between you are just as insufferable when you win as any redneck UGA fan… and when you whine about all the reasons that you lose… just as insufferable… Own your losses just like everybody playing big boy football.

You guys may run your mouths with a little more social refinement that many of UGA’s fans but you guys never miss a chance to run your mouths about something. You are all dying for UGA to fall on its face to Bama this coming weekend… for all of you smart people there at Tech you don’t seem to understand that if UGA succeeds the entire Georgia State College System succeeds… by the way as much as you all hate to admit it… you are a part of that too.

I can’t remember what movie its from but the quote seems appropriate… “If you don’t start none… there won’t be none.”

Dawgfan 91, you sound like a 12 year old. C’mom man. Grow up. You really want to compare UGA fans to Tech fans? You’re an idiot. You and your UGA brethren all brag how good your team is ALL YEAR LONG! That’s why Tech fans hate UGA and your fans. Win with class! Don’t be a horse’s ass. If you don’t like us talking about our superior academics then stop talking about your superior football team and shoving it down our face. Just sayin ;)

The reason any fan base does not like another is really pretty simple (with a few exceptions)… If one team regularly loses to another team, the team on the losing end will usually complain about how bad the other teams fans are. The other reason is location. If you also happen to live, work, play around the team which beats you it only adds fuel to the fire…Most fans act the same way based on how their team is doing. If you win a lot, you have more confidence when discussing football. When you lose consistently you find other things besides football to talk about and are generally speaking more tolerable.

Sure, you can find some exceptions but most fans are really about the same when put in the same circumstances. Think about wins/loses and location and you can figure out pretty quickly who likes/hates who…

Good Coaching

I was watching USC/ ND game last night. Watch Brian Kelly coach his freshman QB. When a mistake is made, he calmly goes over to his QB and listens to why he made certain choices, then smiles, then politely coaches the kid as to what to do next time. He also calls the QB over from time to time to ask him his opinion on things….keeping his confidence sky high….now that’s coaching….. CPJ yelling and screaming at kids is old school and out dated. He’ll lose his teams from here on out w/ that strategy.

@ Double Dawg- as a GT fan, I would agree with you. I’m smart enough to know GT is not in a position to compete with UGA at this time. No way, no how. Simply not even close. CPJ is a poor recruiter and his system doesn’t benefit his defense in practice, etc. UGA will beat them by 40 every single time. It sucks, but that’s what it is…..

NC State fires their coach after they win their game Saturday to go 7-5 and we still have ours? Ours who is 6-6. Ours who is 1-4 vs UGA, 1-4 vs VT and 0-5 in bowl games? What up? All these firings in the headlines and none are GT’s??

I’m sorry – but no…

I’ve had my SUV ‘keyed’ at Tech. I’ve endurred insults at Tech. I’ve seen near fights started by Tech fans/alumni.

Acting as if you are somehow a ‘better class’ of alumni or fan is laughable.

Georgia has it’s fair share of idiots – guess what… – so does Tech…

It’s pretty darn even…

Good luck against FSU…

Mark, I know you have this column ready to send to print. “UGA GOT TALENT, BUT NOT ENOUGH TO WIN A TITLE”. Listen, I understand the GT badgering. It is well warranted. But, TECH comes in every year with so called less talent and has a chance to win this game, every year. That said, I as a GT letterman that beat UGA and has the NC ring to prove it, believes in the offense that we have, but it may be a challenge to get the players needed to run it successfully. Only because everyone on radio and in the papers say so. When we get a QB that can Pass and Run and bigger backs that like to hit and can make cuts when they carry the ball. And Defensive players (Lineman) finally realize the great opportunity they have to shine by playing on the Flats and in the ACC. A ton of great DL are on the bench in SEC and never make it to the Pros just to say I was on a SEC Team. Last year 38 players were drafted from the SEC and 35 from the ACC. If you are a DL and were smart you could change that number in the ACC to 50. Come next Saturday night the same song will be sung in Athens. No NC this year, How Bout them DAWGS!! TECH has 4 NC and UGA 2 and TECH will get 5 before UGA gets 3. Why? At the end of the day you all are just the same ole mangy mutts!!!

Nobody likes a constant loser. I traveled from Augusta to Athen for the game My team as always is for the Jackets. We excel in all sports except football. Last year we started off with a 7-0 record the stadium was full. We would’nt be playing in the ACC title if the sanction on other ACC teams You want fans to support the home team Win Win Win In Business there is a slogan. Don’t get so set in your way that you can’t change. Win Win Win

GT girl. Athens is an hour and half from Atlanta with no traffic. We had 92,000 fans at the game and u average 35,000 at best outside of when the UGA game is in Atlanta so of course traffic sucks more and the commute is longer. Bobby Dodd stadium is not nice even with the recent improvements.

Lastly we don’t want u to feel at home and enjoy it as much because you are the away team and it is called home field advantage for a reason. You shouldn’t get harassed though and that is bad. Hopefully it didn’t happen Saturday. I was there and things seemed pretty tame amongst both sets of fans.

You lost again and badly but quit crying about game traffic and not getting seats on the 50 yard line as a visiting fan, lol

That’s funny, coach, b/c I went out of my way to ask Tech fans if they were treated well by UGA fans, and they all said they had NO PROBLEMS (other than the final score).
Plus, the away team gets tix in the lower level. I know that b/c I was sitting in Sec 104!

@SAT – Academics doesn’t make the University money buddy, football does!! Plenty of high academic schools doing well in football…..hell even Vandy did descent this year. Need to find another excuse for y’all sucking so bad. 42-10!!!

I truly feel sorry for any legitimate UGA graduates on here if this mental midget is typical of your fan base. Academics don’t make the University (which Tech is NOT, by the way — just as a note to the inbreeders on here who can’t comprehend that there isn’t a “GTU” in Atlanta, lol) money???? Oh really??? Shall we compare the endowmwent funds for the 2 schools? That is REAL money, not some pocket change from football — which is all it generates for UGA comparatively. And that money is 100% due to academics (hence why UGA has less than many junior colleges, but I digress because I understand that your tiny little brains can’t comprehend such things while you’re scoping out your teenage sister at the same time). But, just to appease life’s losers on here who only want to focus on a childs game played by infantile egomaniacs with a deformed ball, I will now address the state of Georgia Tech footbal:

We suck. Period. That’s about as much of a positive statement as I can make. I’ve supported CPJ for 5 seasons now, but no more. CPJ and his entire staff should be fired right now, and ALL football scholarships should be canceled. I didn’t see a single player on the field Saturday worthy of a scholarship. I was born bleeding white and old gold, but for the first time in my life I am truly embarrassed to be a Tech fan. That is twice this season that the team has just completely failed to even show up and have quit on everybody. And THAT is poor coaching and non-existant leadership, plain and simple. If you can’t get your team motivated to play their biggest rival, then you have absolutely NO business being a coach at this level. But what was most disturbing of all to me was how the Tech players responded. Or should I say, their complete lack of a response. I kept watching blatant personal fouls (being repeatedly shown on National TV just for added emphasis) being committed and no flags are thrown. I counted at least 4 times I saw a UGA defender pick up a Tech player and literally body-slam him AFTER THE PLAY WAS DEAD! And not a flag anywhere. But I’m not mad at the officials. I am DISGUSTED by the pussified Tech players who took it!! Any man of any worth would have made the pount of at least ending a few UGA players careers right there. Ogletree would never play again (or walk without assistance and articial knees) if I were the coach or a player. Ditto for Rambo. They would both be undergoing multiple reconstructive surgeries as we speak CPJ should have sent the entire sqaud over and HURT the UGA players AND coaches for that. But they are too big of wusses and UGA’s coaches have proven before a national audience what hypocritical scumbags they are. And some of you folks wonder why UGA gets absolutely ZERO respect from the football powers?? Watch a replay of that game — with particular emphasis on the ghetto-thugs on defense. No decent human being could support or respect such a bunch of cretins. They would all be dead or in prison if they hadn’t found a “school” with such low standards that even they could play ball there. But that’s what you get with special admissions!! But as much as I’d like to bash the knuckle-draggers in Athens, I’m 1000X more PO’d at Tech. I’ve been going to Grant Field for games since the mid 1960’s — but I won’t go to another one or even watch on TV as long as the coaches are retained and those wimps posing as ballplayers are kept on scholarship. My family and I have MUCH better things to do with our Saturdays — AND our money!!! I remember back in the 70’s when there was some very serious discussion about completely doing away with athletics at Tech (to focus on academics — where the REAL money is!). Perhaps it might be time to revisit that discussion, because if the idiots on the hill aren’t going to put any more effort or money into the program than what we are getting lately, they might as welll just do away with it completely because right now Tech football is a total joke. And the problem is the coaches AND the players!! The coaches suck, and the players are a bunch of pansies. The only “options” are to drop back and punt (start all over with the program) or just close shop and don’t even waste our time anymore. Either is an improvement over the current situation. CPJ, you’re a great coach — at the Div II or smaller level, but you are WAY out of your league in ANY Div-I conference. I never thought I’d say that, but enough is enough!!!

WHAT makes you the expert?

Mark Bradley knows nothing about sports or Tech football. Tech is 1/3 the size of UGA student body and does not draw the football players that a SEC school does. The ACC standards are higher then most SEC schools also. There is nothing that the 2 schools share in common. Tech will never draw the fans nor did it when Tech won the 1990 Nat Championship. If Tech had a 12 and 0 season they still would not fill the stadium and I am a 14 year season ticket holder. Ga Tech will never draw the fans that a SEC program like UGA does. You Mark Bradley need to find another team to write about because the Tech program is what it is. Tech does not care about football as much as its education.

I agree on all your points Mark. I went to the game in Athens. I was given 35 yardline 6 row tickets by a good friend that’s a UGA fan. My fellow alum and I wore our gold but noticed that there were very few Tech fans. Tech fans and the team have given up on the old ball coach CPJ. For a school with such a rich academic tradition, why get a coach that isn’t smart enough to have a call playcall sheet on the field? Why does this guy not know that opposing teams look at film to break down his play-calling tendencies? Why can’t he recruit bigger offensive and defensive linemen? Why can’t he articulate the problem and take some responsibility without blaming players and assistants? Lastly, why did we stick with AD Dan Rad? We should have left him and not him leave us. I called for Al Groh to be fired before he got here LOL. He was a bad choice from the start and so was CPJ. The triple option works on teams that are physically slow or ill-prepared. After 4 years in the scheme, our opponents are ready for it. Without a big QB like Nesbitt, the option is dead. Just like it won’t work in the NFL due to speed, it won’t work against big boy teams. Take that back to Georgia Southern. As an undergrad, I was in Athens when we beat UGA once. We were so happy that we were going crazy. Then those “good ole boys” ran our butts back to Atlanta because nightfall was coming and you don’t want to be alone with a bunch of drunk angry Bulldog fans. But this time, it was just embarrassing. The best thing about that game was the Zaxby’s on the way.
