Tevin says farewell, Tech plays D and Johnson warns Miami

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets actually play defense! Who knew? (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

This post is an adjunct to the Georgia Tech-Duke game column, which can be found here.

1. Tevin Washington gave himself a shining home sendoff. The Jackets’ No. 1 quarterback, who’d been outplayed by backup Vad Lee in the wild victory over North Carolina a week earlier, had one of his finest days in his final game at Bobby Dodd Stadium, rushing 19 times for 62 yards and completing six of 10 passes for 102 yards. Washington threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth, and even more impressive was his capacity to sustain a series of long Georgia Tech drives. In order, he presided over possessions yielding 72, 75, 75, 75 and 43 yards — all of which ended in touchdowns. Lee didn’t play in the second half.

2. The Jackets’ defense held Duke to seven second-half points. The first half seemed an extension of the 68-50 victory over North Carolina, with neither side stopping the other. “You couldn’t miss your turn,” was Tech coach Paul Johnson’s characterization. But in the second half Duke managed but 121 yards. Three of Tech’s four sacks came in the final two quarters, and Jeremiah Attaochu’s takedown of Duke quarterback Sean Renfree on third-and-six with 8 1/2 minutes left was the game’s biggest defensive swoop.

3. Johnson wasn’t conceding anything to Miami. The Hurricanes will play at Duke next week, and they’ll finish ahead of Tech on a tiebreaker if they win. Said Johnson: “Miami’s got another game to play, and that crowd we played today is tough. They competed. They played hard. I don’t think they’re going to roll over.” For the record, the Jackets would already have the Coastal Division clinched had they held a 17-point second-half lead against Miami here Sept. 22.

So now the Rednecks have a shot at playing in the title game. It would be so sweet to ruin their season next week. Tech just needs to play a little bit of defense because UGA can’t outscore them. Let’s do work Jackets.

We need Vad against Georgia. Tevin won’t get the short yards against a good defense- he has proven that time and time over the last few years.

Bradley failed to mention that most of Tevin’s passes were way off target- even the ones he completed. I’ve never seen that poor of an arm in D1. Good thing it was just the Dukies yesterday- sorry, I’m not buying into the Doo Doo Devils football team.

TW will not be able to handle the big bodies and UGA. They will stack the box and make him try to throw which he can’t. He played decent yesterday but his throws were still horrid…overthrowing Laskey by a country mile and almost a pick six (but Beano bailed him out). He’s just not big and fast enough to get the short yardage needed to make or break third down situations. Duke is ok, but they are still Duke on D (playing none)…so don’t get all giddy on Washington. Vad is still the superior QB that Johnson needs to play more than often if GT wants a shot at UGA. That’s plain and simple to see….

Go Jackets!

Way to go Jackets – you’ve earned it. Miami (Thug U) doesn’t deserve to play in the ACC Championship Game.

If the GT defense rises up next Saturday, GT wins a high scoring affair. But I can also see Murray having a stellar day if the defense lets down any during the game. The only opportunity for GT to win against UGA is for the GT defense to play a full 60 minutes of football.

And I’m stick of CPJ saying that all backup QB’s are the most popular QB on a team. In this case, our back QB IS THE BEST QB on the team. He’s the biggest recruit CPJ landed in his tenure, so that’s why us GT fans like Vad. He’s superior to TW at this point.

I remember last year when GA Tech played against UGA and Tevin was basically shut down. It wasn’t until Synjyn Days came in with the threat of a passing game that our offense began to move the ball against Georgia’s defense. With Vad Lee available this year, my guess is that Paul Johnson won’t wait nearly as long as he did last season to make the switch.

Also, if the Jacket defense can continue playing like they have the second half of their last two games, then they have a shot against the Bulldogs. Both North Carolina and Duke had prolific passing games which threw in effective rushing attacks yet the defense was able to bow up and make stops both games in the second half. As long as the Jackets can score TD’s and put pressure on Georgia’s offense, this could be a fun game to watch, much like the game against the Tar Heels.

Paul Johnson will get one vote for coach of the year, his own. UGA is not North Carolina or Duke. Put them both together and you still don’t get an SEC team. The ACC on has two competitive teams FSU and Clemson. Too bad they are in the same devision I would like to see them play again.

TWO OT losses for GT in 2012, both vs. Coastal opps. And in each game GT had the lead LATE in the 4th qtr. D letdowns both games allowed OT. What could’ve been this season….

On the VT side … the Hokies got their 2nd OT WIN of 2012. And in both of these Ws they TRAILED in the 4th qtr. 2 OT Ws and the Hokies are still a win shy of .500 & bowl eligibility (5-6). Just like GT fans, UVA fans gotta be loving how they can play spoiler next Saturday.

Tech has a pretty good outside game too, if you haven’t noticed. Not saying Tech will win the game, but I guarantee you we won’t go down easy.

@ old dog..anything can happen..Stanford was a 21 point underdog and went on the road and won last night..Baylor was 11.5 dog at home and blew out K State..Ole Miss was a 19 dog on the road and should have won..with the loses to the top 2 teams UGA has more to play for..when you have more to play for sometime you play tight and not your best game..ask K State as they have cruised all year long until they became #1..anthing can happen

@ Reality……only REAL UGA fans will admit this, but the fact is they are not really that good a team this year. If they had played a representative SEC schedule (not their fault, but….) they would not be in the position they are in now. And when I say that REAL UGA fans will admit it, one said that very thing to me this morning at church.

the Dwags talk about winning the SEC” championship and the nc. on the nc front last time i looked it has been over 30 years since hershel talker played for you guys and won the nc.

with all the top 5 recruiting classes in the richt era tell us jackets how many sec championships you have? NONE IN THE PAST 7 YEARS.

your coach is a has been. actually he is a never was. even our coach has won 2 nc albiet in a lower division.

lets remember t2008 when we played in athens eh? you dwags were talking the same kind of trash. do you remember the outcome of that game?

over the last 7 championless years for the dwags most of the time you would point to the gt game and count a win as a season making win. well this year it is our turn. can you imagine how it will feel to you dwags should gt erase any chance you dwags have of winning a nc next saturday? pretty good motivation for the team.

meanwhile the jackets are not even on the dwags radar.

time for a perfect storm.

Tech – #28 in the country in offense, #62 in defense. UGA – #25 in offense, #20 in defense. Tech plays in the weak ACC while UGA plays in the tough SEC. Says plenty right there.

@ Steve..it only takes 1 win to blow the whole thing up for UGA..UGA has won 10 of 11..however, 1 win by GT on Saturday and UGA’s NC thoughts are gone and it would ruin your whole year..UGA has more to play for..GT has to just go out and play..sometimes that happens for ex: Stanford 21 road dog..I expect GT to be a 17 road dog..anything can happen

After the BYU game, I came on here and told you that our very young team would improve and we could run the table including the vastly overrated team in Athens! Our team is starting almost no seniors and some true freshmen and we all thought we were a year away from an excellent team who could compete for an ACC title. This team has guts and toughness! They have gone into College Park and Chapel Hill and shredded the #6 and #7 nationally ranked defenses in the country! The two-headed QB monster is the nightmare defensive coordinators on our schedule have feared since Coach Johnson came to the Flats! Yes our country cousins from the Ag school up the road better bring their A game when the city boys come to town or it will be the end of their pipe-dream! THWG!
