Tevin says farewell, Tech plays D and Johnson warns Miami

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets actually play defense! Who knew? (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

This post is an adjunct to the Georgia Tech-Duke game column, which can be found here.

1. Tevin Washington gave himself a shining home sendoff. The Jackets’ No. 1 quarterback, who’d been outplayed by backup Vad Lee in the wild victory over North Carolina a week earlier, had one of his finest days in his final game at Bobby Dodd Stadium, rushing 19 times for 62 yards and completing six of 10 passes for 102 yards. Washington threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth, and even more impressive was his capacity to sustain a series of long Georgia Tech drives. In order, he presided over possessions yielding 72, 75, 75, 75 and 43 yards — all of which ended in touchdowns. Lee didn’t play in the second half.

2. The Jackets’ defense held Duke to seven second-half points. The first half seemed an extension of the 68-50 victory over North Carolina, with neither side stopping the other. “You couldn’t miss your turn,” was Tech coach Paul Johnson’s characterization. But in the second half Duke managed but 121 yards. Three of Tech’s four sacks came in the final two quarters, and Jeremiah Attaochu’s takedown of Duke quarterback Sean Renfree on third-and-six with 8 1/2 minutes left was the game’s biggest defensive swoop.

3. Johnson wasn’t conceding anything to Miami. The Hurricanes will play at Duke next week, and they’ll finish ahead of Tech on a tiebreaker if they win. Said Johnson: “Miami’s got another game to play, and that crowd we played today is tough. They competed. They played hard. I don’t think they’re going to roll over.” For the record, the Jackets would already have the Coastal Division clinched had they held a 17-point second-half lead against Miami here Sept. 22.

I think UGA is a good team and time will tell if they can win 3 in a row for the NC. However, the first 10 games they played and won (excluding FCS GSU), only Vandy and Fla have a winning record and they are the only 2 bowl eligible. Auburn, Tenn, and Kentucky did even win a conference game (Kent or Tenn will get one if they can find a way for one of them to beat the other). With that, if UGA beats Tech, themn hopefully they will bring home a championship to GA. Its been 20 plus years since the last one in the State.

If GT’s defense somehow stops giving up 29+ points a game…if Tevin Washington can learn to pass in the next week…if UGA’s entire starting team gets the chickenpox…then the Jackets will have a slight chance to keep it close with the Dawgs. Not win the game – just keep it close.

Seriously, I’ve been studying this rivalry since the early 60’s, and since 1962 (when Tech made the disastrous decision, in my opinion, of pulling out of the SEC) the series has taken a decidedly pro-UGA tilt. In fact, the overall record in the rivalry is 62-39-5, a 23 game edge for the Dawgs. Since GT left the SEC the series record is 36-13 in favor of UGA, which just so happens to account for that 23 game difference exactly.

GT will be a tough opponent simply because they are the Dawgs’ biggest in-state rivalry. I’m not a firm believer that you can throw the records out when the two play each other, even though almost everyone announcing the game on radio/TV will use that line. I do believe that Tech has the capability of winning this game IF UGA gets caught napping. That won’t happen. It might be close, but the Dawgs will win.

After the loss to MTSU I felt UGA would score on every possession against GT and never have to punt. With the progress GT has made over the past month I feel we can compete better and who knows with a little luck and turnovers anything can happen.UGA will probably score alot of points against the Jackets defense. We will see how well GT’s offense plays against a real defense. With the beatdown UGA took from USCe I have trouble believing they deserve to be ranked above some of the other 1 loss teams.I am not aware of any National Champion that has taken that kind of beating in the past 30 years.

@ The Auditor,

You’re correct – you must really be dumb. But not being accepted into the University is no reason to feel that way – the entrance requirements are fairly stringent. What makes you dumb is believing that your comment was an insult to the students and alumni of UGA. Good luck at the JC that accepted you.

Kingdawg…..more annual hype from Athens. For the record…one and only national champtionship out of Athens has been 32 years. Here’s the national champtionships in the SEC since Dawgs one and only. LSU two, Alabama four, Vols one, Florida two, Auburn one. Mightly Dawgs zero. Oh….let me throw Tech one. Shouldn’t be ranked #3 with Buffalo, Florida directional, Georgia directional and usual SEC yawns. Please….

@ GT79MD83,

Nebraska was blown out by Colorado 62-36 in their LAST regular season game of the year in 2001 (and didn’t even play for the Big 12 championship), yet played for the BCS title. They didn’t WIN the NC, but they had the opportunity to play for it. So there IS precedent. There’s no reason why UGA, with a mid-season loss similar to the Cornhuskers, shouldn’t have the same chance should they win the SEC championship.

KC and the rest of you clueless fans, Georgia will win by three touchdowns and will score on every possession. Tech has only seen one team anywhere near as good as Georgia, and that was Clemson. We own you. So does Middle Tennessee!

GT will be so dominated by the end of the first half the 2,500 GT travelers to Athens will be loading up their Prius and heading back home. Maybe your bosses will give you a half day off Sunday at the Radio Shack to recover.

Don’t get me wrong – we still love an in-state rival as arrogant as Tech. It gives the dawgs to turkeys to eat in one Thanksgiving weekend.

Cut the BS on the salaries on Tech grads vs. UGA grads! What a worthless excuse to be pissed at UGA for having a better football season. My brother graduated from Tech in 1988 and I graduated from UGA in 1991. To be honest, my brother considers his Industrial Management degree from Tech pretty worthless. I earn more money than both my siblings,, and you know what, who cares! I wish my siblings the best, and the fact that I went to UGA and my older brother went to Tech has never been an issue. I pull for Tech when they aren’t playing Georgia, and I don’t assume that all their fans and graduates are nerds. Please think how foolish you seem when you call “all” Georgia fans rednecks because it makes you seem like one yourself. May the best team win on Saturday!

The GSU team UGA played sat, was not as good as Bama played last year. Having watch GSU this year they have to run the ball because they have no passing game. Vad Lee has as good an arm as anyone college football plus he is as big as josh N. just faster. Anything can happen that’s why they play the game. Just ask Oregon and K State. What a tough Schedule UGA played, NO Bama, LSU, or Texas AM or even a Mississippi State. Vandy, Tenn.,Fla (with six turnovers),Ole Miss,Auburn, not one in class of Bama or LSU. Oh South Carolina but how did that turn out. I don’t think Tech will beat UGA this year but That’s why they play the games.

The problem with UGA is they play a pansy schedule every year so they only have to win one or two major games and they consider themselves championship material. Alabama will euthanize the mutts handily and end their dreams regardless of what happens against GT.

I am a diehard Tech fan since the 82. What I know is that Georgia always get the 4 and 5 star recruits while Tech averages about 2-3 star recruits. As a rule when Tech does well it’s because they over achieve, while Georgia with all those Big name players typically underachieve. They finally beat Florida this year as a horrible top ten team. They barely beat a small school Saturday. I will always be a Tech fan and as far as Saturday’s game even though Tech is a huge underdog,; that’s why they play the game. I will wait and see what the Dawgs do against Bama. Last year the Dawgs had a huge lead at halftime against LSU only to get throttled in the second half.

Georgia got embarrased by SC and played the weak sisters of the West, but they won’t be able to hide two Satudays hence.

Get ready for another beatdown.

“Guide to Handling Success” by UGA fans and players

1) Get in the face of Georgia Southern players and jaw the big talk.
2) Celebrate your team having a chance of playing for the national championship by coming on a Tech blog and trolling.
3) Actually try to justify a win over Mizzou as a quality victory (Kingdawg)
4) Trash the ACC and talk about SEC superiority (Do you see Apple executives ripping on smaller electronics companies? No, they know they are tops now and they don’t have to say anything)
5) Mentioned South Carolina in their strength of schedule discussion (Tech could have gone to South Carolina and gotten beaten down too. Losing big to a big team doesn’t justify anything).

As a final plea to UGA trolls…get off our blog before I ask your parents to add ajc.com to the parental control settings on the basement computer.

And to the Tech fans out there. Vad Lee threw some horrible balls in that game. His throws before halftime looked like a high school JV quarterback. Why can’t you just acknowledge that Tevin had a great game and was instrumental in us winning the ball game? I’m not saying Vad isn’t talented but he isn’t without his limitations.

I wonder if Duke prepared for Lee and then got an over dose of Washington. Nothing Washington did in the NC game indicated he would get this kind of playing time. Johnson kind of does his quarterbacks like he runs his options, lots of options, keeps you guessing who will have the ball. The guy is a great football coach. Georgia won’t have a cakewalk Saturday they better be careful.

I see Miami losing next weekend, too much pressure. Doesn’t it seem crazy we are still talking a year later about this unsettled business? This is really not fair in several dimensions.
