The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets actually play defense! Who knew? (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
This post is an adjunct to the Georgia Tech-Duke game column, which can be found here.
1. Tevin Washington gave himself a shining home sendoff. The Jackets’ No. 1 quarterback, who’d been outplayed by backup Vad Lee in the wild victory over North Carolina a week earlier, had one of his finest days in his final game at Bobby Dodd Stadium, rushing 19 times for 62 yards and completing six of 10 passes for 102 yards. Washington threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth, and even more impressive was his capacity to sustain a series of long Georgia Tech drives. In order, he presided over possessions yielding 72, 75, 75, 75 and 43 yards — all of which ended in touchdowns. Lee didn’t play in the second half.
2. The Jackets’ defense held Duke to seven second-half points. The first half seemed an extension of the 68-50 victory over North Carolina, with neither side stopping the other. “You couldn’t miss your turn,” was Tech coach Paul Johnson’s characterization. But in the second half Duke managed but 121 yards. Three of Tech’s four sacks came in the final two quarters, and Jeremiah Attaochu’s takedown of Duke quarterback Sean Renfree on third-and-six with 8 1/2 minutes left was the game’s biggest defensive swoop.
3. Johnson wasn’t conceding anything to Miami. The Hurricanes will play at Duke next week, and they’ll finish ahead of Tech on a tiebreaker if they win. Said Johnson: “Miami’s got another game to play, and that crowd we played today is tough. They competed. They played hard. I don’t think they’re going to roll over.” For the record, the Jackets would already have the Coastal Division clinched had they held a 17-point second-half lead against Miami here Sept. 22.

Regardless of the rankings, UGA is NOT the 3rd best team in the country.

Kingdawg, what’s funny is every SEC and ACC school play 2-3 cupcakes each year, not just UGA, but they never point that out. Tech played Presbyterian and Middle TN State, Bama played Western Kentucky, FAU, and Western Carolina, etc.

Love all the UGA trolls on the Jacket blog. That’s the greatest sign of concern the Bulldog fans are showing we could ever hope for. Come to our site, congratulate the team for the win and say you’re looking for next week’s game; no troll and a fan that’s confident in their team and looking forward to the game. Come to our site and talk trash; find a fan that’s worried their team will lose and may even get embarrassed.

Same ole crap each and ever year.
1) Tech scores a “big win” over some crap ACC doormat and Tech fans start puffing out their chests and talking tough;
2) Tech fans run their big mouths about how overrated UGA is and how we haven’t played anyone;
3) UGA hands Tech its azz on the football field;
4) Tech fans make crybaby no class sore loser excuses about academics and how much money they make;
5) Tech fans each a bunch of sour grapes and root like mad for Bama/LSU/Real Football Teams to beat UGA cause their sad, pathetic and completely futile football program can’t get the job done itself.
6) Rinse and repeat.
Tech fans are as predictable as clockwork. This has to be the biggest effing joke of a fan base on the face of the freaking earth. I mean really, who can top these clowns?
Thanks.

@ Steve…..no, Jacket Man is not a loser; YOU are. So what if there are Tech fans on the UGA blogs; in my book they are losers too if they get on there and post crap. But for you to attempt to justify your being on a Tech blog because “but mommie, he hit me first,” further indicates what a loser you are.

On paper UGA has the better team. On paper UGA will beat GT easily. On the internet UGA fans talk big. But like Johnson says, games are played on the field not on paper. Just hope the UGA fans and team stay focused on their ranking and Bama. Teams #1 & 2 went down yesterday. This week’s top 3:: Notre Dame, Bama, UGA. Could it be the #3 team going down next Saturday? Despite what Dawg fans think, beating GT is not a divine right. Just ask Tennesse fans about their in-state rival.

If I were Kelley I would try to figure out a way to get pressure on Murray, Easier said than done. USCe did it, but I’m not sure we have the hosses to do it. Maybe Spurrier will let is borrow Clowney. Never mind, the evil genius will have his hands full with Clem’s son. USCe not the same team w/o Lattimore.

Super…….Don’t know about the Connor boys. Good athetes but I don’t know if either is a game changer. Of the 2, I’d give Connor the nod. Grantham may be worried more about Vad Lee. To me, Lee has the potential to put more pressure on the GA D than any GT QB in a while. If he has his A game and doesn’t make a lot of Fr. mistakes.

See this is the problem with a lot of Tech fans. They say things that make zero sense. The idiot Buzz2011 says the SEC is a weaker division than the ACC. Please explain with facts. Also, UGA is Tech’s third biggest rival? You guys wait all year to try and win against UGA. I have heard Tech fans say they would gladly lose every game as long as they beat UGA. In all reality, Tech is UGA’s maybe third or fourth biggest rival. It would be nice if Tech won more than once every ten years.

@ Steve…..I agree the Notre Dame is not the best team in the country, but, as I said earlier, UGA is not the 3rd best team in the country either. And regarding Tech’s scoring last year, we didn’t have a passer the caliber of Vad Lee. If we had had somebody like that, or if Tevin had been able to pass consistently, we would have scored more than 21 points, and because we DO have Vad this year, that is why I say you won’t hold us to under 30 points. OK, I’ll give you back 2 points; you won’t hold us to under 28 points.

If Washington plays against UGA, Jackets lose. If Lee plays the Techs have an honest chance. Washington is just not a D1 caliber QB. Possibly not even FCS.
The ACC is terrible. Beating Duke means nothing.

So let me get this straight. Tech fans think Vad Lee is the Aaron Rodgers they’ve been waiting for years to come through? He has a 52% completion percentage this year, which is far worse than the noodle-armed Tevin Washington. He has thrown for over 100 yards in exactly one game; against a NC team with an absolutely horrible defense. Honestly believe that Bacarri may have more receptions on defense than any Tech receiver. Hope you enjoy your 42-14 whooping, you social butterflies.
