"So, former colleague Brian VanGorder, how's this Auburn gig working out?" (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Our weekly Heat Check appears a day late but, one hopes, not quite a dollar short.
FALCONS: Lost for the first time this season against the rival that has become an abject nemesis and, in losing, saw their biggest weaknesses – can’t run the ball, can’t stop the run — exposed. And what were the two things Mike Smith, after taking this job in January 2008, said a good team had to do? Run the ball and stop the run. Barometric reading: Barely 24 hours later, the Falcons cut defensive end Ray Edwards, who had little to do with Sunday’s loss but who did little after signing as a big-ticket free agent. Students of Falcons history will note that, after the first loss of the 1998 season, Dan Reeves cut cornerback Juran Bolden for messing up a coverage in San Francisco. Those Falcons would go 14-2 and make the Super Bowl.
(Please see my video chat with Brian Clark of CineSport, included below, for more on Edwards.)
GEORGIA: Beat Auburn the way a good team should beat Auburn. Will play Alabama — presuming Alabama beats Auburn — for the SEC title. Barometric reading: A week ago, almost nobody thought Georgia would have a chance against the Tide. That tide, so to speak, is turning. Brad Edwards of ESPN now projects Georgia over Alabama, and Mr. Edwards isn’t known for flights of fancy. And there’s still a real chance the SEC champ will play for the BCS title.
GEORGIA TECH: Played in Chapel Hill. Gave up 50 points. Won by 18. That’s Georgia Tech football. Barometric reading: The Jackets could well play for the ACC championship. When was the last time Georgia and Tech won divisions in the same year? Why, never.
HAWKS: They’re 3-3. Given that they’re in major flux and that they’ve had a frightful early schedule, that’s quite good. Barometric reading: Because this team was so structurally different from its predecessors, it was hard to know if it would fall into the lottery or make the playoffs. We’ve seen enough already to know that this is a playoff-caliber team.
GEORGIA STATE: Lost Bill Curry’s final game by 44 points to finish 1-10. Barometric reading: The next coach, whoever he is, won’t exactly have a tough act to follow.
GEORGIA TECH HOOPS: Opened the new McCamish Pavilion and won big. Barometric reading: The Jackets seem to have twice as many real players as they did last season, and they’re set to get one more when Stacey Poole, a Kentucky transfer, becomes eligible next month.
GEORGIA HOOPS: Scored three first-half baskets in losing to Youngstown State, which is known mostly for its nickname (Penguins) and being the place Jim Tressel coached before he landed at Ohio State. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 27 of the Bulldogs’ 56 points, which means his teammates managed 29. Barometric pressure: A program working in its fourth year under a demonstrably skilled coach shouldn’t be losing anywhere to Youngstown State, let alone at home.
GEORGIA STATE HOOPS: Lost its opener at Duke. Big upset there, huh? Barometric reading: In his first collegiate game, freshman R.J. Hunter scored 14 points and took 10 rebounds. Ron Hunter, who coaches the Panthers, has always said his son could really play.
KENNESAW STATE HOOPS: Markeith Cummings hit with 0.8 seconds left in overtime to lift the Owls past South Carolina State last night. This marked KSU’s first victory of calendar 2012. The Owls had last won by beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Dec. 23, 2011. They’d since lost 20 in row. Barometric reading: KSU isn’t apt to go 3-28 again. Its competitive opening loss at Tennessee was a good sign, and winning three nights later on the road is an even better one.
BRAVES: Lost backup catcher David Ross to the Boston Red Sox, who can, as we know, outspend anyone save the Yankees. Barometric reading: Given that he’s the best No. 2 catcher in the game, and given that the Braves aren’t sure when the surgically repaired Brian McCann will be ready, Ross is a major loss.

Mark, glad to see you giving Georgia Tech the credit we deserve.
We WILL beat UGag and we WILL win the ACC. Vad Lee is the greatest quarterback we’ve had since Joey Hamilton.
Upset alert: the Mutts struffle with the perfect option and since the leghumpers are already focused on their blowout loss to Bama, I will call it now – Goergia Southern Eagles shock the Dawgs, 42-31 in the Cesspool Up North.
Meanwhile my jackets slaughter a suddenly powerful Duke team to wrap up the ACC Coastal. I will book my Orange Bowl tickets on Sunday, GT is BCS bound baby!

Mark, I know that Georgia Southern is not in Metro Atlanta, but it really is insulting that a school with the third best football team in this state cannot get any love from a newspaper that serves a great number of its alumni. The Eagles are 8-2 going into their end of season game with UGA, which they will not win (but might keep it closer than Auburn). They are certainly going to make the FCS playoffs, just put up 69 points on their opponent this week, and have lost both of their games on missed kicks. This team deserves to be mentioned in your column much more than Georgia State football. The real GSU demands respect.

Stopped watching the game at the 5 minute mark of the 1st half and GA had only scored 8 points. They are a poor shooting, sloppy ball handling, poorly coached team. I see no improvement in this team over last year if antthing, they have regressed. CMF now is playing off his players players he recruited the only one that has SEC talent is Pope.
They would need to pay me to come and watch them. Did you notice the small crowd? Hopefully, McGarity will go out after this year and bring in a top quality coach, what we have now isn’t cutting it.

All that heat is making me sleepy. Oh….you were crushed on national t.v. by Spurrier for the 3rd time in 3 years. It’s cold in Atlanta today, I think that I’ll go back to sleep and dream some more.

It’s going to take a special coach – really special one – to turn UGA into basketball power. Fox has joined Ron Jirsa and Dennis Felton as seemingly promising young coaches who have been swallowed up by the huge challenges that exist within the program. The biggest one I see is that kids in the state don’t grow up as UGA basketball fans. They grow up as UNC, Duke and Kentucky fans. That’s a very difficult thing to overcome. Georgia simply doesn’t have SEC-quality talent outside of Caldwell-Pope.
Unless we get a virtuoso recruiter like Billy Donovan (and probably a new arena), this program will continue to wallow in abject mediocrity, if not ouright badness.

Mark,
The Dawgs still have a weak offensive line. Yes they have improved from the first game, but sc did expose our weakness. Bama’s front seven is probably better than sc.
Don’t tell Murray the Bama game is big and maybe he will have the best game of his career.
The Dawgs defense is playing great and can hold UGA in the game with Bama.
Bama’s only weakness is they couldn’t catch Johnny Football.
I just hope the Dawgs will make the game respectful and get to a BCS bowl.

I do not hate GT, and have a bunch of friends that go there. That being said, Tech does not play defense, and we have all seen what Murray does to teams that don’t play defense: 38 points in 3 quarters against AU, 51 points vs UT. Vandy and Ole Miss do play defense and UGA scored 48 and 37 points in those games. I do not think that it is unreasonable to think that UGA COULD (not will) score 50+ against Tech if that is what is needed to win.
That being said, if we look at the scores since PJ has taken over at Tech, GT has scored an average of 30 points on UGA, with a high of 45. So I do not think that 50+ will be necessary to win.

With all the SEC teams currently crowded into the BCS top 10, and the two per conference rule in place, then I suspect that if Florida and Texas A&M both win out, the loser of the SEC Championship game will miss out on a BCS Bowl completely, as they will undoubtedly fall past at least one or two other SEC teams in the final BCS standings.

The discussion: Does the SEC title game winner deserve to play for the BCS Championship, even if there are two undefeated teams remaining?
Mel Kiper: In a word, yes.
Look, we all know polls and rankings reflect accomplishments more than merit. Going into the weekend, did any of us really believe that No. 9 Louisville could beat South Carolina, the team ranked just behind them? Of course not. And we have similar issues at the top. Notre Dame is a pretty telling case. They’ve had an exceptional season, and have, in the eyes of voters, earned their No. 3 ranking. But that number reflects what they’ve accomplished, not how good we really think they are. If they scheduled a neutral-site game for Saturday against Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, South Carolina or Florida, which one of those games would they be favored to win? Maybe South Carolina? Maybe Florida?

Georgia Tech has the nation’s highest average SAT score for football players, and also the highest average high school GPA.
UGA, on the other hand, has one of the very lowest SAT averages, as well as a very low GPA average. As a result, 85% of UGA players are “special admits,” when means that they can not meet the minimum educational and intelligence requirements for admission to UGA, even as low as that is.
Yes, it would be great if Tech was more competitive with UGA, but Tech fans are proud of our heritage of having intelligent, responsible athletes who go on to rewarding careers and contribute to society.
Contrast this with the very unintelligent dummies that UGA recruits. The 53 arrests over the last four years is proof enough, not to mention winning the Fulmer Cup. Most of these goons are tossed out after their eligibility is over, and many end up on welfare.
UGA is clearly just a football factory dedicated to winning at all costs, and most UGA fans are okay with this, with no concern about the embarrassment this brings to the State of Georgia.
Mark Richt is the architect of this situation. As long as he is paid a huge salary, he will continue to recruit the illiterate brain-dead t-h-u-g-s who he thinks will win. Unfortunately for UGA fans, he’s not remotely in the same league with the top coaches in the SEC.
So the bottom line is that Georgia Tech – win or lose – does so with honor and integrity, while the lowlife punks, woman beaters, drug users, and drunks in Athens continue to embarrass us all.

My sister in law was not admitted with a 3.8 and a 1280 on her SATs. My wife and her mother both went to UGA. Stop with the “it’s easy to get into UGA” stuff. 15 years ago a 3.0 and 1000 could get you in. It’s not that way anymore.

Notre Dame is pretty suspect also but they beat Oklahoma by 17 at Oklahoma. That, combined with the rest of their schedule gives them a little more credibility in my opinion. They may not be top 3 but they are surely top 10. Florida may be top 15 at best.

There isn’t any evidence that Florida is getting better though. Since the SC game they had 6 turnovers against UGA and completely gave the game away. They barely beat a 5-5 Missouri team at home by a touch down, and they needed late second heroics to beat an awful sun belt team. They aren’t playing good football at all.

Well at this point it would be better to eat that salary and pay Uggla $45 million than to play him and have him to bat around the Mendoza line. Play Prado at 2nd Base and keep Francisco at 3rd and move Gattis to Left and play Constanza at Center. That line up would be more productive than any with Uggla in it. But why sign McCann to a 13 million dollar contract when he wont be back until May and is declining sharply and will need to be a 1st baseman and/or DH to perserve his career. This is a mid-maret team and 13 million is a heck of a lot to throw around. It just seems that the Braves are not fiscally responsible.

GTBob,
Manziel and Texas A&M had a distinct advantage against UF in that we had ZERO game film on what to expect from them. They dominated the first half, as we had no idea how good that kid was. He continuously converted third downs by running. At halftime, Muschamp basically told the defensive front that if they continued to rush up the field and not play in their lanes he would bench their butts. They listened and the defense shut them out in the second half. UF’s defense can handle any team in the country. 20 points is the most they have allowed and they have faced some pretty good offensive teams. Our offense is hit and miss and seems to play to the level of their competition. Bottom line is that UF has beaten 3 top 10 teams…something no one else in the country can say.

Only a gas bag like Kiper could come up with a statement like that . Why bother playing the games – it’s not winning that counts.

Why do you people reply to GTBob? He obviously has no life and simply comes on here to comment on peoples comments. Just ignore the little boy. You will never win when someone is as stupid as him. If UGA beats Bama, he will say that Bama stinks and lost at home to A&M. If Bama beats UGA, he will tell you how overrated UGA was. Can’t win.

First,
Matt Ryan sucks and can’t throw a deep ball.
Mike Smith needs to GO!
Dunta Robinson is a bust. Cut him!
Second,
Coach Richt needs to go! He can’t win the NC.
He can only beat weak teams.
Third,
Every other school but mine is a cesspool of rude fans.
Fourth,
Your a complete idiot if you don’t agree with me.
I hope I didn’t leave anything out.

What has Van Gorder done lately that would make us want to bring him in? Personally I think the guy is way past his prime.
—————————————————————————————————————————–
That didnt seem t be a problem with Al Groh..There’s not much talent at Auburn Bob no coach in his prime or not can change that..And unlike CPJ when Van Gorder leaves Auburn he’ll get a job at a major program.

Rick James,
I will have to disagree with you on that one. According to Scout, Auburn had the #6 ranked class in 2010, #2 in 2011 and #8 in 2012. That team is loaded with raw talent. I would say the coaching is not there.

Maybe Fox can coach but he cannot recruit the talent he has in the state of Georgia. It’s amazing that McGarity says he likes where the program is going with Fox — hard to believe he served under Jeremy Foley — doesn’t look like he learned a darn thing. Foley would have already fired Fox.

Mark,
1. In regards to the Saints game: We can’t be too surprised that a division foe who is familiar with our style of play ended our streak. The Saints despite their record are talented on offense, and the Falcons are undermanned of defense. It wasn’t surprising that Brees and company were able to move the ball. But when it comes to goal line offense, it is 10% execution and 90% about just whipping the guy in front of you. I need Matty Ice and Co. to punch each other in the chest in those situations and say ” We are an elite offense!! We’re going to stick it in the endzone vs. these SOB’s and put a dagger in this place!!!” It’s a “take no prisoners” mentality that is lacking there. The Saints were begging for the Birds to beat them, and Mike Smith and Co didn’t take advantage of it. Hey a Little Brother is as a Little Brother does.
2. In regards to the Dawgs: I don’t care what Bama does or doesn’t do. UGA has to show me something. Bama has proven they can take a punch in the mouth and fight back. When UGA gets punched in the mouth, they fall apart. That is what soft second tier football teams do, and that isn’t good enough. The only way you beat a team like Bama is to take the fight right to them. That is what LSU and A&M did. If the Dawgs fight like hell for 60 mintutes, they have a shot. But if they come out flat and tepid like they did vs. South Carolina, I will 100% guarantee that Bama will beat the ever living Dawg Crap out of UGA.

Aaron Murry reminds me of Tony Romo as a guy that puts up great stats but never wins a clutch game and makes dumb turnovers. Ok Bradley do you feel this assessment is accurate.

I like Mark ’smart as a Fox’. I hope the dwags keep him, especially if they only score 6 points in a first half! BTW, who is Youngstown State? Never heard of ‘em. Go Jackets! Looking forward to beating dwags again in roundball-and yes-hopefully in football too!

Van Wussiestein- wha a joke. You will soon hear he is suspended for threatening a mascot.
Watching the Kentucky Duke.game Hate them both but if you cheer for Kentucky you most likely cheered for the women’s East German swim team in the 80s. I think 3 of their players are being investigated for off shore accounts.

Well Mark, regarding outspending in baseball, seeing what the Dodgers, the Angels, and now the Blue Jays have done regarding buying talent, once again you’ve been proven conclusively wrong.
And Brad Edwards projects UGA winning. Whoop dee doo. Unless you’re Nate Silver, spare me the “projections.”

Wait a tick. I saw that UGA lost to Youngstown State by 12 and was admittedly surprised, even though the basketball team is only good once every 5 years or so. But 6 points in an entire half of play? That’s just pathetic. I know UGA basketball takes a backseat to many other sports on campus, but give me a break.

It’s so funny that Tech fans are making fun of our schedule, but yet we should be where we are at now record wise. Tech plays in the ACC and who in the hell have you beaten exactly? Presbytrian(who is that?) Virgina(next) Boston College(hahahahaha) Maryland(when was the last time they were actually relevant?) UNC(wow, you gave up 50 points) lets not forget that little loss to Middle Tenn. St. either. A blowout actually. Sooooooo how can you get all over UGA about their schedule when they have beaten who they were suppose to beat, and we haven’t lost at home either so far vs. the 3 that tech has……enough said

i think coach fox is a good coach but sometimes he”s too structured.he needs to turn his players loose. run a motion offense and let them run and gun.he will see a different team which will win more games and be excituing.he”s too handson with the team.they spend their time thinking where to be in the offense instead of playing.

Nice picture of Michael Turner, but again, the Falcons didn’t get critical yards at a critical juncture. The lines need to step up. Turner could also use a fullback from time to time.
Frank Wren, SIGN MICHAEL BOURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT LEAST TRY TO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read about the Braves’ possibly signing Cody Ross and then read that he was a great clubhouse leader. The supporting example, however, was that he was quite the prankster———-as if pulling pranks makes for leadership. Give me the Christian man that is Bourn on my roster any day; he’s just the kind of person you need on a team/in a locker room. Not surprised at all that his demeanor is always one of focus, business, and professionalism.
Reacquire Rafael Soriano.
Reacquire Bourn, and make a move for Ross, B.J. Upton, or Nick Swisher. Do NOT pass on trying to re-sign our CF incumbent. Unlike another incumbent, we need to re-elect this man.
Georgia is better than many realize; they are as good as anyone in the country.
Manti Te’o deserves the Heisman, and an ESPN commentator’s saying otherwise “because” he doesn’t catch passes or score touchdowns is absolutely one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever heard, in sports or anywhere else. The way football, especially pro, has become incredibly biased for offenses is amazing. The premise states that five is greater in absolute value than negative five. Some guys on CSS (SportsNite) once tried to justify this reality, saying that no one buys tickets to see defensive players. Even if that statement were true, it would justify nothing.

I was wrong.
