Alec Ogletree racked up major bonus points with this soaring interception. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
This post is an adjunct to the Georgia-Ole Miss game column, which can be found here.
1. Aaron Murray is pretty darn good. He was sacked five times in the first half, twice off play-action fakes. (Generally speaking, play-action should buy an extra second.) He wound up completing 21 of 28 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns. The second touchdown came three seconds before the half after Murray pumped left, ducked right and threw long to Tavarres King. The third was a deep throw to Malcolm Mitchell down the right sideline for the touchdown that put Georgia ahead 21-10. Murray completed 13 of 15 second-half passes, with no sacks. Update: Murray now ranks sixth nationally in passing efficiency.
2. Five plays, four turnovers: Has there ever been a wilder sequence? For posterity’s sake, we recap the dizzying minute midway through the second quarter. Georgia’s Keith Marshall fumbled, recovered by Ole Miss. The Rebels’ Vince Sanders fumbled after catching a pass, recovery by Damian Swann. Todd Gurley rushed for five yards. (No turnover here.) Gurley carried again and fumbled, recovered by the Rebels. Bo Wallace threw long, the pass being intercepted by Alec Ogletree. Five plays, four TOs. Holy Toledo.
3. Zander Ogletree outscored his twin brother Alec 6-2. A fullback, Zander scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 8-yard burst in the third quarter. Eight minutes later, linebacker Alec would dump Ole Miss running back Jeff Scott for a safety. (Safeties are technically scored by teams, not individuals, but who cares?) Said Alec: “I’m sure he’ll try to joke on me.” Said Zander, whose given name is Alexander, speaking of familial bragging rights: “I’m the older brother (albeit by minutes) — it felt great.” Georgia publicists believed this to be the first time siblings had scored, even unofficially, in a Georgia football game. Basketball would be another matter: Think of Jarvis and Jonas Hayes, not to mention Coco and Kelly Miller.

How many more top ramked teams would you need to beat?????
Sorry but going undefeated is more important than a couple of key wins. Voters also aren’t just going to forget that UGA wasn’t even slightly competitive against South Carolina, and barely hung on to beat Tennessee and Kentucky. Two of the worst teams in the FBS.

Hilarious, Rick James. I remember using that analogy when I was 10 years old.
If you’re too stupid to understand the REALITY that GT is not eliminated from the Conf
Championship game then, as you stated to me, “if that makes you feel better run with it.”
IMO, no GT will not get to the CG even if Miami loses their final 2 ACC games, b/c GT won’t win their’s. In fact, I think they will lose them both.

Intelligent sports fans realize that UGA is 1-1 vs. relevant competition, USC & UF, and 7-0 vs. no team that is even mediocre.
Their remaing schedule consists of the SEC’s worst or 2nd worst team, Div II GA Southern, and a GT team that made BYU’s horrendous offense look like Oregon.
Unless BAMA pulls a UF (6 TOs), UGA will go into their bowl game at 1-2 vs relevance, and 11-0 vs. below mediocrity.
Make the lemonade while there are still plenty of lemons. Amazing how pitiful Tenn has become.

Given the time and protection AM is an effective passer once he gains confidence and does’t turn it over. It was evident as the game went on and he threw some of the prettiest passes in his career. It was a lousey start by his OL giving up 4 sacks early in the game. Many of us feared this wou;ld happen after the JAX high. Even CMR looked dazed as the dawgs O struggled its first two possessions. I think JJ is still hurting as you didn’t see the fire he had in FL game but half a JJ is better then most LB’s in CFB. As usual the D came on strong and as the O came to life the dawgs started to click on all 8. Certainly hope MB’s knee injury is not serious same for the OL.
Dawgs should handle AU yet we all know it might take until the 3rd qtr to begin pulling away and come out w/a win and the div title. Its in AU and they’ll want revenge for the beating GA gave them in athens last season. Fans may think this is going to be a cakewalk for the dawgs but there’s always that nagging feeling these dawgs never make anything easy.
Too early to talk AL in atlanta. Thats one scary team. Have to be crazy to wantb to play them.

Uneducated DAWG fans.
You have a zero chance to get to the BCS game. You laid an egg versus USC and FLORIDUH is making your win look real bad with the way MIZZOU played FLORIDUH. The GATORS do not even look like a top 10 team at this time.
The only way the SEC gets a team in is if BAMA wins out……………………………No CRYSTAL will be coming to ATHENS anytime soon.

Was that Ole Miss or Southern Miss the Dawgs whupped up on Saturday. Not much difference. With a good solid game by Murray and the D playing with their hair on fire, this Dawg team could hang with Bama. We got a better defense and a much better QB than LSU

It is good to see we are starting to use the fullbacks. I think that is 2 TDs in 3 games from that position. I wonder why we do not use Richard Samuel as a fullback? Also, we are starting to throw to the tight ends again.

Why is the Auburn game at night? Would rather it be at noon just to get it over with…those road night games (see @ SC) are a little more uncertain with the crowd getting into it more. Remember Auburn nearly defeated LSU in a night game. Hopefully the offense get’s it going early and doesn’t let Auburn sniff any shot at a victory.

Georgia has played the 24th ranked schedule in America…Notre Dame 7th toughest…Kansas State 30th toughest…the last three games on schedule do nothing for strength of schedule…McGarrity will hurt UGA in post BCS era unless he schedules better OOC games…all Georgia can do is run up the score the next three games…and hope someone knocks off KState and/or Notre Dame…this scenario is based on the preposturous notion that UGA can beat Bama…

The combined record of sec teams UGA has beaten is 13 wins and 31 loses. Florida accounts for 7 of the 13 wins. It is a total joke to hear such rationale you spew, uga has play two football teams in 2012. Loss badly to south carolina and escaped a win against florida in the other,in a terribly played football game by both teams.

DawgNole, oh really? Thanks for clearing that up…never would have guessed. Let me be more clear…why would a network want to show this particular game in prime time? Auburn is the worst team in the SEC and on paper, this should be over at halftime…great for ratings. I understand it is an east clinching game, but still.
With that said, it should be an easy win, but strange things happen at night on the road…like Mettenberger looking like Peyton Manning.

JB,
Have you lost your mind sir? Nobody outside of perhaps a few delusional dawg fans thinks that Georgia has a better defense than LSU. That’s insane.
Also I’ve never seen Murray have a great game against a good to great defense. Never.Even the UF game he sucked. He has great games against really bad defenses and that’s it. The Alabama defense will shred him. Even you guys have to know that.

Assuming we tcb at Auburn and continue to play at a high level, we go into the SECCG 11-1 and ranked no lower than 5th. I’ll take that. Those who say we can’t beat Bama also said we couldn’t beat Florida. LSU showed that Bama is beatable. Will we actually beat them? There’s a reason they play the games…

what do yall think about Kentucky maybe bringing in Jim Tressel? He has lots of HS coaching contacts in neighboring Ohio. Not sure how long the just cause sentence handed to him by the NCAA is. No big time coach is gonna take that job…there are quite a few Sun Belt coaches who would jump at the chance, but thats a big jump…Tressel would bring in SEC/Big10 power football, run first, play defense…what else are they gonna do, go back to the Hal Mumme days, throw on every down?

Still a lot of football left to be played. Georgia’s biggest hurdle of course would be Bama, assuming we make it to Atlanta.
Do I think we will beat Bama? No, I do not. Why would I? Bama is #1 and Saban usually doesn’t lose games when favored. Bama should win the SEC Championship game regardless of who the opponent is. Do I think it is possible that we win? Sure… just not likely. I am a Richt supporter and always have been through thick and thin. If he wins this game, it will likely keep the haters quiet for a while. If he loses, they will be chirping like they always do with absolutely zero perspective and grasp of reality. See Tennessee for the most likely result of a post-Richt UGA football program.
Not that worried about K-State. Most of the ranked teams they play will struggle to stay in the polls. Texas Tech, W Virginia, and Okie State are all dropping out (or will be soon). A 1-loss SEC Champion has a legitimate shot at making the BCS title game. As a Georgia fan, it’s nice to be having these conversations rather than wondering IF we are going to a bowl game or whether or not it’s in Shreveport.

It’s all about the protection Murray gets. If he gets pressured or sacked in his first series, then he tries to improvise. But, give him the protection, 4 seconds or more, with the Dawgs receivers, ain’t no defensive back gonna cover our receivers “cept for 4 seconds, Murray has proven he can deliver
All about the Offensive Line, and having a back that pick up a missed assignment or blitz that can block. Give credit to BoBo and/or Murray, they can’t control blocking.

won a national championship at VSU as a player and a coach.
Coached Dusty Bonner at Kentucky, won the SEC passing as a

Is Nick Saban taller than A Murray? Have to disagree with you about A Murray. He looks lost most of the time. Just watch his head on a pass play, he locks onto one guy, doesn’t go thru any progression. Watching LSU/Bama last night and the work of Z Mettenburger, I have never seen AM look that calm. This is ZM’s first year, not third. Why didn’t CMR get some time for our backup QB, with a 30 point lead.? I just don’t understand his management style. Does AM have photo’s of CMR ? Ask yourself , do we really look like #5 in the nation? Could we play ball with LSU or Bama? Do they play big boy football and we play Division 2?
