On Aaron Murray, the TO binge and those scoring Ogletrees

Alec Ogletree racked up major bonus points with this soaring interception. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

This post is an adjunct to the Georgia-Ole Miss game column, which can be found here.

1. Aaron Murray is pretty darn good. He was sacked five times in the first half, twice off play-action fakes. (Generally speaking, play-action should buy an extra second.) He wound up completing 21 of 28 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns. The second touchdown came three seconds before the half after Murray pumped left, ducked right and threw long to Tavarres King. The third was a deep throw to Malcolm Mitchell down the right sideline for the touchdown that put Georgia ahead 21-10. Murray completed 13 of 15 second-half passes, with no sacks. Update: Murray now ranks sixth nationally in passing efficiency.

2. Five plays, four turnovers: Has there ever been a wilder sequence? For posterity’s sake, we recap the dizzying minute midway through the second quarter. Georgia’s Keith Marshall fumbled, recovered by Ole Miss. The Rebels’ Vince Sanders fumbled after catching a pass, recovery by Damian Swann. Todd Gurley rushed for five yards. (No turnover here.) Gurley carried again and fumbled, recovered by the Rebels. Bo Wallace threw long, the pass being intercepted by Alec Ogletree. Five plays, four TOs. Holy Toledo.

3. Zander Ogletree outscored his twin brother Alec 6-2. A fullback, Zander scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 8-yard burst in the third quarter. Eight minutes later, linebacker Alec would dump Ole Miss running back Jeff Scott for a safety. (Safeties are technically scored by teams, not individuals, but who cares?) Said Alec: “I’m sure he’ll try to joke on me.” Said Zander, whose given name is Alexander, speaking of familial bragging rights: “I’m the older brother (albeit by minutes) — it felt great.” Georgia publicists believed this to be the first time siblings had scored, even unofficially, in a Georgia football game. Basketball would be another matter: Think of Jarvis and Jonas Hayes, not to mention Coco and Kelly Miller.

He’ll pad them just that much more against Georgia Yech (bad team). Ha!

@Now 7 & 19: As bad as Murray played against Florida he did bring the Dawgs down the field for the winning TD against the #2 team in the nation…..essentially on the road……with a WR eliminating a first down throw by jaw-boning after the play…..give the man his due. He is the QB on the 5th ranked team in the country and going to the SEC championship…..quit your bitchin’ and whining

@gtbob…..how many td passes does your qb have on the year?..lol …lol

Aaron Murray has 21 passing TDs and 3 rushing TDs. 24 total.
GT QB’s have 22 rushing TDs and 6 passing TDs. 28 total.

Game Changer, go back to saying John Jenkins would be ineligible. Aaron Murray recieved a 3rd round draft grade last year. GTBob, I love how you and every other KNOW IT ALL, comments about him. You only wish you could have had the talent as Aaron Murray.

After watching the replay it doesn’t look like to me that Murray was getting all the way back up into the pocket which was allowing him to be sacked early on in the game. Once he got it right they put on a nice offensive show. Throwing the long ball is the way to beat Bama. GO DAWGS !

Mark, please relay to the editors that though the readership has become accustomed to no AJC reporters attending sporting events like the World Series or anything not including the local teams, we at least should get a wire story on the biggest regular season college game in Alabama vs. LSU.

Bob, I love how you threw in rushing stats. The question was not how many total touchdowns does Tech’s qb’s have. It said how many passing touchdowns does Tech’s qb’s have. You would think someone who has a Tech diploma you would understand reading comprehension.

And I would think that if you watch college football at all you would know how stupid the question was. I guess not. If a GT QB had as many passing TD’s as Murray then we would probably be 0-9 right now.

The difference is 4 wins. That should be obvious. Also do you think it is going to get significantly better with someone else? Nick Saban couldn’t consistently win more than 8-9 games at GT.

Just wishful thinking on your part Bob..If Georgia makes it to the SEC championship game and beats Alabama they will have beaten the number 1 and number 2 teams in the nation.A one loss SEC champion will always get the nod over some undeated teams from a another conference.Georgia will play for the national title. In fact they may play Alabama for the whole ball of wax..I’m sure the thought of either scenario makes you cringe..

I was at the game yesterday. Like every fan base we have some real morons that are consumed with stupidity. During the game I heard boos and calls for Mason to come in. First off Mason is not allowed to step on the field for a game unless Murray is injured. It is called being redshirt for next year. Second, the O-line was allowing Murray to be sacked and abused the first half. In the second halfthe team makes adjustments, the line protects Murray and he proceeds to shred the Ol Mis defense. So what does some moron yell out after Murray’sfirst incompletion in the second half? Put in Mason, Murray sucks! Now I know we all have a right to an opinion but, can some of you moron fans start basing your’s on facts instead of stupidity? That felt good to vent. GO DAWGS!!!!

Suggestion to several bloggers: Give up trying to reason with folks like Steve. Y’all have accurately made your point, to wit: Murray is very good against average to bad teams and pretty bad against really good teams. Obviously the corollary to that is that his stats are misleading because he does things like throw for over 300 yards and 4 TDS against the Ole’ Misses of the world. Against good teams he throws INTs and few TDs and his completion % nosedives. All of this is obvious, but some folks prefer to live in their own world of make believe. My advice: Let them live there.

@TampaGator at 2:10 – Good point. I am confident the Gators’ offensive woes will be overcome. It just takes time to recover from Charlie Weis’ influence. Now that he is gone, things will turn around, but it takes time. That was a bad hire, but Kansas bailed CWM out of that. It is pretty obvious that CWM has a pretty good idea about how to run a major program that hire not withstanding. The future looks good for y’all.

Nice photo of AO on the pick, MB. What a POOR throw by the QB. If the ball is thrown properly, Ole Miss is up 17-0.

UGA had 7 3rd down converts. 3 of which went for TDs, and 2 of those were 40 & 66 yds! That’s bad D on Ole Miss’s part.

How in the ever-living heck did UT put up 44 and UK put of 24 on a D of UGA’s calibre?

These 2 teams are 0-12 in SEC play, and 5-14 overall.
Up next for UGA? 0-6 (SEC) 2-7 (overall) Auburn.

To this point 4 of UGA’s SEC opps are a combined 1-23 in SEC play. Mizzou 1-5 & AU, UT, UK 0-18.

Impressive. Is the only thing that comes to mind when I think how UGA beat them.

Yes Tech is and oddly enough they have a better chance at winning the division then Duke does. That all depends on upcoming decisions by Miami though. And no, I do not want to be where UGA is. Having the most talented team in the country every year and finishing in the middle of the SEC isn’t much of an upgrade to what we currently have. Sorry.
