Live from UGA: Will we see a Cocktail Party hangover?

Coming down won't be easy. (AJC photo by Bob Andres)

Athens – Let’s stipulate that Georgia cannot possibly be as energized for this week’s game as it was seven days ago. Let’s also stipulate that Georgia has more talent than Ole Miss and is playing at home. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Rebels took an early lead and held it awhile. It would, however, be positively stunning if Ole Miss led after four quarters.

It’s also worth noting that Florida, which lost to Georgia, trailed Missouri 7-0 at the half in Gainesville today. (Hey, wasn’t it just yesterday than even some Georgia fans considered Florida too good to lose?) But the Gators have since forged ahead 14-7. Which doesn’t mean they’ll hang on and win. It does, however, underscore the peril inherent in post-big-game blahs.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but motivation — especially the motivation of 20-year-old amateurs — is an ephemeral thing. The Bulldogs have had a week of being slapped on the back. (Surely some of those backslappers harbored private doubts pre-Jax.) It would be human nature to follow an impassioned performance with a lesser one. That said …

The longer games go, the less passion matters. Contrary to popular belief, games tend to be won by the team that plays better, as opposed to harder. Again we note that Georgia has better players, which leads us to predict: Georgia 31, Ole Miss 20.

But you know me. I’ve been wrong a time or two. I’ll be here to watch and report, and I’d appreciate your company. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

I will take the TD :) But why wouldn’t we just get the first down there? What if the safety actually covered the receiver like good teams would. We still haven’t shown we can run the ball down their throats like AL did. That is the problem with this team.

Brown had to turn 360 degrees to get to that ball and not trip.

So far Jarvis Jones is a no show. I hope it changes or we will be in trouble.

Why wouldn’t they just get the first down instead of the touchdown?

Maybe because a touchdown is worth six points?

It’s kinda incredible that UGA has allowed Ole Miss to score one more point than they allowed UF to score and yet Gators were still in the game until the very last seconds of the 4th quarter wonder how much longer Hail Marys and prayers will last for the ‘Dawgs

Mark, Murray should have thrown the ball to where Marlon Brown caught it in PERFECT stride. He also shouldn’t have fallen down when pushed, what a wuss.

Seriously though, I feel sorry for people who expect that kind of perfection. Talk about being unhappy.

Grantham is the biggest disappointment on this staff. i want you to know he is not calling or running the same defense as last week. We blow way to many coverages he has got to lay off the cover packages i feel like there is to many bc you always see our second and third level defenders questioning each other like do you got it or me and neither one of them knows. He has them thinking instead of just playing. Last week we blitzed which is so easy bc you just go get it and your cover responsibilities are more basic. When he runs a base we almost always have two or three defenders covering the same zone and our linebackers get caught in the wash on running plays. Got to coach fundamentals better if your gonna run all those base packages.

I’m not exactly a glass-half-full person, but sometimes I wonder if you folks — some among you, anyway — really are Georgia fans. (Or Falcons fans, or Braves fans. The same principle applies on those blogs, too.)

The only recurring criticism I ever have is with Malcolm Mitchell on special teams. The dude is a stud on both offense and defense, but I hold my breath every time a kick comes his way.

The statements yall are making about murray makes me wonder who yall think a good qb is bc i have seen manning throw four tds befor halftime and not hit his receiver in stride. Murray is a very good qb it is our defense that is underachieving.

And why do GA players dance, jump, and otherwise go ballastic over every routine tackle, reception or what may seem to be their jobs? Maybe because there are not afforded many opportunities….

Mark, the long time Atlanta fans have been conditioned to expect the worst and hope for the best. Why, you ask? Cause given our history, anything that can go wrong, does go wrong EVERYTIME (except 1980 UGA and 1995 Braves). We have seen enough heart breaks in our life time.

I dont think theres much chance we lose this game. Its not in Richts mo. Thats the frustrating thing about his regime. He rarely loses to the stiffs that would get him fired and manages to squeak by the big boys every blue moon to give all the kool aide drinkers enough hope to keep beating the moribund horse. All this with a job that is arguably top 5 in the country and certainly top 10
