Live from UGA: Will we see a Cocktail Party hangover?

It won't be easy coming down from this. (AJC photo by Bob Andres)

Coming down won't be easy. (AJC photo by Bob Andres)

Athens – Let’s stipulate that Georgia cannot possibly be as energized for this week’s game as it was seven days ago. Let’s also stipulate that Georgia has more talent than Ole Miss and is playing at home. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Rebels took an early lead and held it awhile. It would, however, be positively stunning if Ole Miss led after four quarters.

It’s also worth noting that Florida, which lost to Georgia, trailed Missouri 7-0 at the half in Gainesville today. (Hey, wasn’t it just yesterday than even some Georgia fans considered Florida too good to lose?) But the Gators have since forged ahead 14-7. Which doesn’t mean they’ll hang on and win. It does, however, underscore the peril inherent in post-big-game blahs.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but motivation — especially the motivation of 20-year-old amateurs — is an ephemeral thing. The Bulldogs have had a week of being slapped on the back. (Surely some of those backslappers harbored private doubts pre-Jax.) It would be human nature to follow an impassioned performance with a lesser one. That said …

The longer games go, the less passion matters. Contrary to popular belief, games tend to be won by the team that plays better, as opposed to harder. Again we note that Georgia has better players, which leads us to predict: Georgia 31, Ole Miss 20.

But you know me. I’ve been wrong a time or two. I’ll be here to watch and report, and I’d appreciate your company. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

Just hanging out man. Honest question. Why is UGA playing their starters in this game?

Georgia has looked good this second half. I wish they could put a complete game together. Maybe they will in the SEC CG!

Aaron Murray is feasting on a very young and inexperienced secondary.
Lots of fun, but he needs to do it against a top ten team in a big game.

Not that I care much about comparative scores, but …

Alabama 33, Ole Miss 14.

Texas 66, Ole Miss 31. At Ole Miss.

See the TD drive against #2 FL. Rarely does someone throw for 300+ against a legit top 10 defense. That is why they are legit top 10.

Murray played well against FL in the 2nd half. He had 2 15+ yard passes dropped. But I remember 1 pass that wasn’t dropped by Mitchell.

Murry doesn’t play behind a line as good as Alabama’s.

Very very satisfying win for the Dawgs. Sorry all you Richt haters and Murray haters and Bobo haters. You’ve got to go and be miserable (actually continue to be miserable) while all the rest of us are happy. Now on to Alabama LSU and see who we’re gonna get in the Championship after we dispatch of Auburn. (Had a frustrated Auburn fan give me his tickets for free! Awesome!)

Big Crimson 75, you really think UGA will jump an undefeated K-State team that has played a much tougher schedule?

If Georgia wins out then it would mean that they beat the number 2 and number 1 team in the country playing in the hardest conference in the nation.

Where is that weak schedule at?

ND, down 12-20 to Pitt, just threw an INT into the end zone with 4:00 left in the game. I pulled for Notre Dame to return to prominence until this past week. Mike Golic, of ESPN’s “Mike and Mike In The Morning”, a ND grad with kids on the team, went on and on about how great ND was this year. What REALLY got me was when Mike said NO WAY does either UGA or Florida lay defense on a level with theIrish.

@Mark
There wouldnt have been a need to throw a clinching TD pass, had he scored on any of the 3 drives which resulted in 3 dumb picks that he threw in the first half.

That game was won by Jarvis Jones and the Defense. Florida had 6 Turnovers and still were driving to tie it at the end.

And Donald you are either too young or too forgetful to remember your history.

Beating Bama doesn’t mean voters will respect UGA enough to put them in the big game.

We have played poorly. Our schedule is too easy. We were humiliated on the big stage.
It will take a miracle for us to get in it. It will take a total collapse of the teams above us.

@Mark here’s another comparative score: The single losses for both Florida and UGA:

UGA’s loss to SC – 35 to 7
FL’s loss to UGA – 17 to 9

We saw last year…the voters will put the two BEST teams (in their estimation) into the MNC.
Bama should never have been playing for the MNC last year.
They didn’t win the SECC.
But guess what…that game apparently doesn’t matter all that much.
