Win, win, win: All these boring old Atlanta Falcons ever do is win. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
Flowery Branch – The NFL schedule has been kind to the Falcons. They’re 6-0, and that flying start leaves the Falcons all but certain to make the playoffs. That this is a good team is beyond debate: Lousy teams don’t stay unbeaten deep into October. At issue now: Just how good is good?
Here’s where the scheduler performs another valuable service. The first six games were testing without being taxing, and the Falcons aced the exam. But now, having beaten no team that’s above .500, they’re in need of sterner tests. Bang on cue, here are their next four games: At Philadelphia, Dallas here, at New Orleans, Arizona here.
Technically, only one of those teams has a winning record. (And that’s Arizona, the one you’d least expect.) But the Falcons’ next three opponents are Brand Names, and two of those three games will staged on the road. After three narrow victories, it became possible to carp over the Falcons’ capacity to play down to the opposition. That won’t continue, simply because the level of opposition is set to rise. If the Falcons don’t start playing up, they’ll start losing.
“We’re 6-0, but we’ve got a lot of room for improvement,” said Todd McClure, the center. “We’ve got 10 games left, and the NFL is about peaking at the right time.”
The Falcons have bitter reason to know, given that they’ve been beaten in their first playoff game the past two seasons by teams with lesser records that wound up winning the Super Bowl. The 2010 Packers started 3-3 and were only 8-6 with two weeks remaining in the regular season; the 2011 Giants were 6-6 with a month to go. Moral of story: Nobody wins the Lombardi Trophy before Halloween.
That said, being 6-0 has enabled the Falcons to believe in themselves and their new coordinators, which is never a bad thing. Asked Wednesday if he considers this the NFL’s best team, free safety Thomas DeCoud said: “We haven’t shown that we are. We haven’t played our best game. But when we put that game together, it will be evident (that this team is indeed the best). To answer the question: Yes, but it has yet to be proven.”
Someone mentioned that the Falcons’ stats — they’re 13th in total offense, 22nd in total defense – aren’t suggestive of greatness. Said DeCoud: “It’s not how the stat line looks. The other team could rush for 200 yards but you’ll force a fumble and take it to the house. Games come down to five or six plays.”
To date, the Falcons have made all the plays of decision. But even good teams need to be given some indication of their true worth. If the Falcons win three of the next four, they’ll have ample reason to consider themselves the class of the league. If they lose a couple of games, Mike Smith and his assistants will have been handed a batch of teaching tools, which can, in the long run, be more valuable than locking down the home-field advantage.
We flash back to 2010: The Falcons were 13-3 and had beaten some good teams (New Orleans, Green Bay, Baltimore) en route, but a home loss to the Saints two nights after Christmas hinted that the NFC’s No. 1 seed-to-be wasn’t quite ready for its close-up. Sure enough, the wild-card Packers rolled into the Dome in January and exited 48-21 winners. Alas, the teaching tool arrived too late.
These Falcons are in a splendid spot. They’ve started so well they can absorb a loss or two and still win the NFC South breezing, and the road to 6-0 hasn’t been so filled with wonders as to make us wonder if such a run can be sustained.
McClure was likewise asked if the Falcons should be considered the NFL’s best. “I do,” he said. “Right now, I really do. I think everyone in this locker room does.”
Media consensus holds that the Falcons haven’t played as well as their record suggests. With the schedule about to grow teeth, nobody will be able to make that argument if this team keeps winning. Which would leave McClure … sad?
Yep. “I hope we kind of keep everything under the radar,” he said. “I’d rather be the team everybody is talking about in February.”

While the Falcons may lose some in the next few games it won’t be because they have all of a sudden stepped up in class. Let’s quit living in the past and get up to date, If you’re paying attention at all you’ll realize that the Eagles, Cowboys, Saints and Cardinals are no different than 95 percent of the current NFL teams: average to below average at best.

All 4 of these teams have their own warts:
Philadelphia – bad decisions & turnovers by #7, that is not gonna change
Dallas here, brand name yes but way overrated and Romo is just average
at New Orleans, sure Brees can test Falcons defense but the NO defense is awful
Arizona, coming back to earth after 4-0 start and will be < 500 by time they play Falcons
Although these will not be easy, I see no reason to lose any of these. The only game where Falcons may not be favored or is a toss-up is against the Giants in December. They may not go undefeated but a loss in any other game would be an upset.

Let’s be honest, we all want the Falcons to win enough games to make the Playoffs and then we’ll really gauge where they are as a team. The record over the last 4+ years has been a good return on investment for Season Ticket Holders who have witnessed a stockpile of regular season wins. This team won’t go 16-0 and doesn’t have to, 12-4 or 13-3 will win the division by a mile and give the team a good seed in the Playoffs. At the end of the season it won’t matter who they beat or lost to nor how much they won or lost by it’s the Playoffs we’re aiming for now as a city.

The Falcons problem from here on is not the teams remaining on the schedule. The problem is potential injuries that could derail their season. If the pre-season did nothing else, it exposed an alarming lack of depth throughout the roster. We can see that already with the results of unexpectedly having to start Akeem Dent at MLB. We have the team to win it all in this all of a sudden mediocre NFL, but we must somehow remain pretty much injury free.

I am an avid Braves fan but for the Falcons, I don`t follow the Falcons that closely. As a native Atlantan, I do root for them and hope this will be the year they leave the past disapointing playoff results behind. Smitty has done very well and I believe the team will continue to preform at a high level. As for the rest of the regular season, I predict a 12-4 finish at worst. Anything better could mean home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Right now we are two games ahead of everyone (except Chicago) so we are setting very nice for a good seed in the playoffs. Like Decoud said, statistics can be very misleading. Wins are everything, so until we lose, we have everything to be proud of with this team!

Ranking teams by yards is old-fashioned. Points are what count. The Falcons are #6 in scoring and #7 in points allowed. The only other teams that are top-10 in both categories are the Bears, Texans, and Giants (barely). That’s some pretty good company!

I think the Falcons are playing with house money in this game…. Eagles have all the pressure having fired their D-Coodinator and Vick taking heat for all the turnovers and in a must win… The Odds makers are even favoring the Northern Birds but only by 2 1/2 points and not the standard 3 for a home team… The Eagles have to win this game or they are pretty much toast for the postseason…. I like what Sick and Tired said about winning the Lines… If we do that we will should win….

Gotta peak at the right time. How do we win the division, capture home field throughout the playoffs, and keep the “edge” we need– the same edge the 2010 Packers and 2011 Giants had? Guess if I had the answer I’d be on a sideline somewhere.

I think anything other than a SB appearance at this point will be a huge disappointment for this team and the fans. They have the inside track on home field. Obviously losing in round 2 again would be an utter failure. If the NFCCG is at home, then how can a loss in that game be anything but disappointing? I think it’s “Super Bowl or Bust” now. That’s the problem with raising the bar by going 6-0.
And since 1998 still leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, I think winning the whole thing is necessary, especially if the opponent is Houston, instead of a different AFC team that would be favored just on street cred like the Steelers or Patriots.

I have been a Falcons fan since 1972 and never wavered over all the years. I can say that yes the stats and teams played don’t add up to any greatness but the way I am seeing them play is like nothing I have seen before. I see greatness – I hate to say it but they look like New Orleans and Green Bay the last couple of years…poised in the face of disaster yet keep coming back and finding a way to win…this year everything is going their way they are getting the breaks they never go before. I think it is one of those magic years where it just comes together even without the talent or stats to prove it. I always said Matty Ice was a very gifted QB but he wasn’t used correctly. He is a great short to medium thrower and now that is what he is doing and NOW I am even seeing him connect on some long balls something he has been very inept at before – the new OC has his number and has dialed him in – just keep giving him time OL. GO FALCONS!!!!

Holy cow the Falcons have an easy schedule. The Giants and to some degree the Saints are the only good teams on their schedule.
The entire gist of your blog seems to be “you need to be tested” and the Falcons won’t be tested going into the post season…this smacks of the Falcons history (and Atlanta sports history) as repeating its ugly self.

Far too early to say just how good the Falcons are. I keenly remember watching this team go 13-3, hearing all the talk about how it was the Falcons “year” to win it all, and then remember watching them get stomped at HOME against Green Bay. Until I see this team prove something in the playoffs, it’s all for naught. And right now, I don’t even think the they are as good as their record indicates. Right now, the lucky bounces are going their way, but I’ve yet to see this team have a “statement” type victory against a good team, mainly because they don’t play any good teams (outside of MAYBE the tight win against Denver, and even there, it was only PM’s second game back). I think the date to circle will be Week 15 against the Giants. Have a commanding in that game, and still have a great record at that point in the season, and we can start talking about a Super Bowl run for this team. Til then, I’m not assuming anything.

The Eagles have been the exact opposite of this. They have racked up plenty of offensive yards and gotten plenty of defensive stops in most of their games, but the “plays of decision” have mostly gone the other team’s way, at least in the last four weeks. Typically the law of averages says that the Falcons are bound to come back to earth and the Eagles are bound to start winning more, but we’ll see.

First, 6-0 speaks for itself! Second, the Falconds don’t decide how good the teams are that they are playing. Third, lets not forget that the Falcons changed offense and defense coord. and that could creat some adjustment periods during the season. Fourth, tell me who is better in the NFC? I’m not saying they are the best but who is better?
The Falcons are a top 5 or so team at this point and if they get a solid running game and a solid run defense they will be a top 3 or 4 team by years end. They are 13th in offense because they haven’t run the ball very well. I expect the Falcons to wind 3 out of the next four but 2-2 record beating Cowboys and Saints is critical.
Remember, Denver, Chargers, and Washington are good teams. Two of those three will likely be playoff teams at years end!

Either Denver or San Diego will make the playoffs by default because somebody has to win the AFC West. I told the guys on my job the FALCONS will start 6-0, and finish at 15-1, and will be back in NEW ORLEANS for a second time. We have to realize, they have been winning, and they are still learning the offensive and defensive plays. It normally takes about 6 games or so for a time to start putting everything together. So I think this bye came at the right time, and everything will all come together. But as I tell my co-workers, “One game at a time”. New England finish the season undefeated, but lost in the SuperBowl. So I’m happy where they are, but I’m not satisfied until they are holding that LOMBARDI trophy. If they are not holding that tropyh, 16-0, 14-2, 15-1, doesn’t mean anything. GO FALCONS!!!!

With the Saints terrible defense, the Falcons could challenge this point differential. The Saints gave up 513 yards to the Bucs this past Sunday! Bucs gave the game away.
Eagles are 2 1/2 point favorites Sunday. This game is the Falcons to lose. The Eagles could easily be 0-6. There is a lot of discontent in Philly right now. Hopefully Ryan and company will ratchet up the heat in the Philly media and blogs.

I think Dallas beats us at home and we split 4 games with a 8-2 record.

Falcons may win their division and its a good thing they have a big lead cause they’ll need it. I think that Atlanta will end up 11-5 and lose their 1st playoff game at home in typical Falcon Football Fashion.

I have got a couple that doesn’t have anything to do with the schedule -
Abe remains the only pass rusher.
Unredesigned Oline remains very leaky against the pass rush and run defense of good teams.
Run offense is sporadic.
The rise of Ryan this year, and it has been a rise, has kept some of the sin covered up, but we could easily be 3 -3 right now.

Falcons are in for a rude awakening. This team has barely gotten by against some average NFL football teams. They have avoided 3 losses and found ways to win. That should be applauded. However, the jury is still out on these coordinators. The offense is no more potent than it was under Mularkey with a much worse running game. The defense is barely any better but have been able to get some turnovers. We have dominated no one at this point. We were dominating teams in 2010….and look what happened. In 2010, with those “horrible” coordinators we were beating average NFL football teams by 14 points or more!!! The truth serum will be served soon.
And why are the Eagles a 2pt favorite over our 6-0 Falcons???? What does Vegas know???

Actually, this schedule isn’t as easy as people try to make it out to be. The Falcons do not have back to back home games all season. That in itself makes the schedule brutal. No team is doing as much traveling as this team right now and we still managed to remain perfect to this point; the best start in franchise history under such circumstances.
I’m still up in the air about a few things, but if we can pull off this victory after Andy Reid’s bye week accomplishments, then I’ll be sold until the New Orleans game. Every fan knows that inwardly we wanna see the Falcons sweep the Saints.

I don’t think anybody believes these Falcons will go undefeated. 19-0 doesn’t matter anyway – except to the 1972 Dolphins. Just win your last post season game.
Being considered the best team on paper – particularly before the season is even half way completed – based on some convoluted formula or consensus of pundit opinion – is so BCS.
Stay healthy, continue to do well what you do well, fix areas that need fixing, take care of your on field business (including keeping your off field activities from becoming a distraction) and make the playoffs.
These Falcons are far from perfect, but they’re good and they play with confidence. That statement is no truer than when it’s applied to Matt Ryan. He’s elevated his game this year – so far. The Birds will go as far as he can take them.

If the Falcons win the Superbowl this year but lose two games to the Saints would it be a successful year?? I’m sure for many a Falcon fan it would be awesome ….but a tad bit disappointing…..LOL.

Maybe it is all this parity in the NFL now so very few teams are above .500… but let see if I understand this. The falcons have played 6 teams none of whom are currently over .500 and their next four games only 1 team is currently over .500 and that team isn’t expected to make the playoffs. Whoever did their scheduling needs a big thank you.

When did Vick start playing defense? And by “usually” what do you mean? How many times has Ryan faced the Eagles when Vick was their starter? Once? The Falcons won that game.

The Bye came at a good time. We had gotten a little soft, a bit lazy. Pathetic tackling on defense. Turner tip-toeing to the line for 1 yard. Ryan making lazy, predictable throws. Hopefully these guys did some thinking over the break about what kind of team they want to be. This is a tough place to play against a hungry, talented team that also had their Bye last week. The whole world is watching … will the Falcons answer the call.

The Falcons are for real. They won even when they did not play their best. They win on the road. They play better on the road. They are a group that works well together.
The Eagles are trash, and they will lose in grand fashion on Sunday. Vick is a horrible QB with nothing but raw skills and greasy hands. The Eagles, while talented in some areas, are on the road to destruction with the Coach (and dog) killa driving the broken down bus.

Hey, what’s up. Coach Reid has put a lot of pressure on me this week. But I can’t stop fumbling. I really want to beat my old team this week but I know Abraham has me in his sights. My ribs already hurt a little and we haven’t even played yet. We will try to run but Babineaux is playin beast right now. I will try to make some crazy azz throws on the run but Asante and DeCoud are ball hawks. Not sure if I’m feelin it this week. Peace out to all my fans in the ATL.

Excellent comment and analysis, Jeff B. Points allowed and Scored are really the only stats that count, and sometimes, that can be misleading if there is a blowout loss or win. 6 – 0 is what it is. One game at a time s the only way to go. These so called big name teams are fickle…….Dallas got embarrased by Seattle. The Giants lost to Dallas. The Saints lost to Carolina!! People give these teams credit for what they’ve done in the PAST. It simply doesn’t matter. Matt Ryan threw three interceptions in the Raiders game and they still won. Glass half full, people!!!

Hey Big Crimson 75…Matt Schaub was always the better quarterback. If he had a good offensive line in all the years at Houston, before this, he would have been in the Super Bowl. I think Blank made some mistakes at HD but his biggest mistake was bowing to the black pressure by getting rid of a better quarterback so he could pump up the Atlanta crowd with fumble bug Vick. Or should I say OVERTHROW VICK. 90% OF HIS PASSES WERE OVERTHROWS. His only savior was the height of Finnegan or things would have been a lot worse. This is from a 27 year season ticket holder. I know of what I speak.

Nice column Mark and the gist of it is correct in my opinion. I do have a problem with the flawed logic used to introduce the topic, however. To use the argument that the schedule has been soft and ’sterner tests’ lie ahead doesn’t fly with your data. You claim “6-0 but now, having beaten no team over 0.500″? Looking at the standings, only 11 teams (including Atlanta) are above 0.500 (less than 33%). If you take away 4-3 teams (1 game over 0.500), the number drops to 7 teams!
Next, you say look at the next four games against “Brand Names” (Philadelphia, Dallas, New Orleans, Arizona). Using your logic, their next four games are teams that are 3-3, 3-3, 2-4, and 4-3, respectively. Thus, if Atlanta should win all of these games, it is likely that they STILL would not have beaten many teams “over 0.500″. Of course, it’s possible that all of the teams the Falcons have beaten will win their next four games (and then, the Falcons would have beaten eight teams over 0.500 and two teams at 0.500. I also didn’t realize that San Diego and Denver were not considered “Brand Names” (and don’t know a lot of teams that look forward to playing them).
Here’s the bottom line . . the NFL has a LOT of very good teams that can win any given Sunday. Yes, the Falcons don’t look invincible (and will lose a few along the way). But, there are at least 25 teams out there that would gladly trade places with our Falcons right now (”weak schedule” and all). If you needed another inch of column filled, just space the words more . . don’t take a flawed position to write an otherwise good article.

Falcons do not have a great defense, but they are very opportunistic – and I think Vick will provide them with multiple turnover opportunities. What they do on offense is another question – Matty was pretty shaky last game, and Philly’s D is an unknown with the new coordinator. Hopefully the kinks were worked out over the last two weeks.
This game could really go either way, but let’s hope the Falcons put Vick on the ground so much that Andy Reid switches to Nick Foles. Go Falcons!

Atlanta has a history of poor play in Philly but not sure why this game would be any kind of barometer for success. The Eagles are playing terrible and just fired a DC. As a long time fan this is our typical attitude to assume everyone is better than we are, but I think the team is finally changing that old mindset. Falcons should go up there and take care of business! I see Vick getting hit hard and Atlanta winning the turnover battle, and thus the game.

There is a team like the Falcons every year and usually they crash and burn. If I were a gambling man the odds are this team is not as good as its record. The one thing going for them is they have made the playoff every year for a while now so it is not the old Falcons we are seeing here. They seem to get better every year and one time the odds are they will be as good as they look.

Ty,
Save your fingers from the ergonomic stress trying to explain the irrelevance of most NFL stats. The journalists, “experts”, and fantasy football nuts, just reach as far as they can to show how clairvoyant they are with the game.
After Week 1…half the league is 0-1….
“They haven’t beaten a team with a winning record!”
So After Week 2, they beat a 1-0 team……and the Broncos fall to 1-1.
“They STILL haven’t beaten a team with a winning record!!”
and on…and on…and on…
There’s a reason only 12 out of the 32 teams make the playoffs. To finally put the teams with winning records against each other to determine a champion.
Lightsout

Good Article, Mark. Yeah, its true–the Falcons will learn whether they are pretenders over the next 3 games (6-3) or if they are really, really contenders at 8-1 or 9-0. Look if you can take 2 out of 3 against N.O., Dallas and Philly (3 teams with good quarterbacks) then you are certainly a very good (if not elite) football team. I dont expect the Falcons to run the table and beat Brees, Vick and Romo in the next 3, but truthfully vick and romo will self-destruct by themselves and Brees has proven at 1-4 that he is not as good as he once was. The Falcons may win all 3 games (hopefully not because then their heads may swell to the point that they believe they are greater than what they really are). I hope the Falcons win ALL the games this year and tie the undefeated miami dolphins team from the 70s as having a perfect season. that is why i watch them, if for no other reason. the Falcons should go undefeated and sweep through the playoffs winning the superbowl. Anything less than that would be a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT for me.

SeenthisB4. Ur right. The Aints are going to win this division. Now that’s funny. Everyone’s complaining about the Falcons opponent’s records. There’s not that many teams in the league with winning records. The Falcon are the reason half of those teams they’ve beaten, don’t have winning records The only team that left on the schedule that probably will have a winning record when we play them, more than likely will be the Giants. So I guessing we’ll be hearing that BS, till the end of the season.

Who cares what everyone thinks about the Falcons. As far back as I can remember. In any sport. The ONLY thing that matters is wins & loses. Don’t believe me? Ask any player in the NFL. If they would rather be on a 6-0 average team. Or a 2-4 average team. Let me know what they say.

Whether or not the Falcons win in post season doesn’t change the fact that Mike Vick stank when he was in Atlanta and he stinks now and Philadelphia was stupid for every bringing him into their franchise. He was never an intelligent quarterback, he could never pass with any accuracy and he was quick to get out of the tough football games claiming injury. All Vick every had going for him was the running play but to rely upon that in the NFL will not do it for a quarterback. For that matter, all of the so-called “running” quarterbacks suck in the NFL. Look at Carolina. Newton is big (at least in body) and he can run, but that is about all he has. He is not intelligent and he will never carry his team to even the playoffs. RG3 is the best in this category because he has the talent and good sense not to soley rely upon the run. One thing is for certain; he is much more talented as a quarterback than either Newton or Vick (or Randall Cunningham for that matter).
And the Falcons have one of the best and smartest quarterbacks in the NFL now. There is no comparison between Matt Ryan and Michael Vick. None. And the numbers prove it.

I knew the Falcons would EASILY beat Mike Vick & Co. in Philly. The reason is because right now, Vick and Reid are CLUELESS about what it takes a win a game. They are both bafoons and are sliding backwards into the abyss. BOTH WILL BE FIRED by years end due to mediocrity. Reid was once a great coach, but because helpless once he was swept under the captivating and enchanting spell of Mike Vick. Reid should have pulled Vick several games ago after the Eagles 3-1 start when things started to unravel and go south. Instead, Reid decided he would stick up for his quarterback and now both will go down like the sinking titanic. Again, Reid and Vick will both be gone by the end of this season.
