The unbeaten Falcons are about to learn how good they are

Flowery Branch – The NFL schedule has been kind to the Falcons. They’re 6-0, and that flying start leaves the Falcons all but certain to make the playoffs. That this is a good team is beyond debate: Lousy teams don’t stay unbeaten deep into October. At issue now: Just how good is good?

Here’s where the scheduler performs another valuable service. The first six games were testing without being taxing, and the Falcons aced the exam. But now, having beaten no team that’s above .500, they’re in need of sterner tests. Bang on cue, here are their next four games: At Philadelphia, Dallas here, at New Orleans, Arizona here.

Technically, only one of those teams has a winning record. (And that’s Arizona, the one you’d least expect.) But the Falcons’ next three opponents are Brand Names, and two of those three games will staged on the road. After three narrow victories, it became possible to carp over the Falcons’ capacity to play down to the opposition. That won’t continue, simply because the level of opposition is set to rise. If the Falcons don’t start playing up, they’ll start losing.

“We’re 6-0, but we’ve got a lot of room for improvement,” said Todd McClure, the center. “We’ve got 10 games left, and the NFL is about peaking at the right time.”

The Falcons have bitter reason to know, given that they’ve been beaten in their first playoff game the past two seasons by teams with lesser records that wound up winning the Super Bowl. The 2010 Packers started 3-3 and were only 8-6 with two weeks remaining in the regular season; the 2011 Giants were 6-6 with a month to go. Moral of story: Nobody wins the Lombardi Trophy before Halloween.

That said, being 6-0 has enabled the Falcons to believe in themselves and their new coordinators, which is never a bad thing. Asked Wednesday if he considers this the NFL’s best team, free safety Thomas DeCoud said: “We haven’t shown that we are. We haven’t played our best game. But when we put that game together, it will be evident (that this team is indeed the best). To answer the question: Yes, but it has yet to be proven.”

Someone mentioned that the Falcons’ stats — they’re 13th in total offense, 22nd in total defense – aren’t suggestive of greatness. Said DeCoud: “It’s not how the stat line looks. The other team could rush for 200 yards but you’ll force a fumble and take it to the house. Games come down to five or six plays.”

To date, the Falcons have made all the plays of decision. But even good teams need to be given some indication of their true worth. If the Falcons win three of the next four, they’ll have ample reason to consider themselves the class of the league. If they lose a couple of games, Mike Smith and his assistants will have been handed a batch of teaching tools, which can, in the long run, be more valuable than locking down the home-field advantage.

We flash back to 2010: The Falcons were 13-3 and had beaten some good teams (New Orleans, Green Bay, Baltimore) en route, but a home loss to the Saints two nights after Christmas hinted that the NFC’s No. 1 seed-to-be wasn’t quite ready for its close-up. Sure enough, the wild-card Packers rolled into the Dome in January and exited 48-21 winners. Alas, the teaching tool arrived too late.

These Falcons are in a splendid spot. They’ve started so well they can absorb a loss or two and still win the NFC South breezing, and the road to 6-0 hasn’t been so filled with wonders as to make us wonder if such a run can be sustained.

McClure was likewise asked if the Falcons should be considered the NFL’s best. “I do,” he said. “Right now, I really do. I think everyone in this locker room does.”

Media consensus holds that the Falcons haven’t played as well as their record suggests. With the schedule about to grow teeth, nobody will be able to make that argument if this team keeps winning. Which would leave McClure … sad?

Yep. “I hope we kind of keep everything under the radar,” he said. “I’d rather be the team everybody is talking about in February.”

Falcons do not have a great defense, but they are very opportunistic – and I think Vick will provide them with multiple turnover opportunities. What they do on offense is another question – Matty was pretty shaky last game, and Philly’s D is an unknown with the new coordinator. Hopefully the kinks were worked out over the last two weeks.

This game could really go either way, but let’s hope the Falcons put Vick on the ground so much that Andy Reid switches to Nick Foles. Go Falcons!

It doesn’t matter how hot they are in October, how hot are they going to be in January, that is the only thing that matters.

Atlanta has a history of poor play in Philly but not sure why this game would be any kind of barometer for success. The Eagles are playing terrible and just fired a DC. As a long time fan this is our typical attitude to assume everyone is better than we are, but I think the team is finally changing that old mindset. Falcons should go up there and take care of business! I see Vick getting hit hard and Atlanta winning the turnover battle, and thus the game.

There is a team like the Falcons every year and usually they crash and burn. If I were a gambling man the odds are this team is not as good as its record. The one thing going for them is they have made the playoff every year for a while now so it is not the old Falcons we are seeing here. They seem to get better every year and one time the odds are they will be as good as they look.

If you got wings, then you hate radar. Fly under, around or over… just don’t let them see you coming or you won’t be going in one piece.

Ty,

Save your fingers from the ergonomic stress trying to explain the irrelevance of most NFL stats. The journalists, “experts”, and fantasy football nuts, just reach as far as they can to show how clairvoyant they are with the game.

After Week 1…half the league is 0-1….
“They haven’t beaten a team with a winning record!”

So After Week 2, they beat a 1-0 team……and the Broncos fall to 1-1.
“They STILL haven’t beaten a team with a winning record!!”

and on…and on…and on…

There’s a reason only 12 out of the 32 teams make the playoffs. To finally put the teams with winning records against each other to determine a champion.

First off, When the season started out everybody was zero and zero, Secondly, when it was one O and O everybody said, “Peyton Manning was going to beat us we sent them home like everyone else. Slow ride home and a lot crying. Sincerely, A True Falcon for Life…

Mark,

He has a point about you referencing brand teams. If you are speaking historically, why in the hell don’t you use that logic when you refer the idiot in Athens. He will blow games big time over and over, but you never reference it.

Good Article, Mark. Yeah, its true–the Falcons will learn whether they are pretenders over the next 3 games (6-3) or if they are really, really contenders at 8-1 or 9-0. Look if you can take 2 out of 3 against N.O., Dallas and Philly (3 teams with good quarterbacks) then you are certainly a very good (if not elite) football team. I dont expect the Falcons to run the table and beat Brees, Vick and Romo in the next 3, but truthfully vick and romo will self-destruct by themselves and Brees has proven at 1-4 that he is not as good as he once was. The Falcons may win all 3 games (hopefully not because then their heads may swell to the point that they believe they are greater than what they really are). I hope the Falcons win ALL the games this year and tie the undefeated miami dolphins team from the 70s as having a perfect season. that is why i watch them, if for no other reason. the Falcons should go undefeated and sweep through the playoffs winning the superbowl. Anything less than that would be a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT for me.

SeenthisB4. Ur right. The Aints are going to win this division. Now that’s funny. Everyone’s complaining about the Falcons opponent’s records. There’s not that many teams in the league with winning records. The Falcon are the reason half of those teams they’ve beaten, don’t have winning records The only team that left on the schedule that probably will have a winning record when we play them, more than likely will be the Giants. So I guessing we’ll be hearing that BS, till the end of the season.

Who cares what everyone thinks about the Falcons. As far back as I can remember. In any sport. The ONLY thing that matters is wins & loses. Don’t believe me? Ask any player in the NFL. If they would rather be on a 6-0 average team. Or a 2-4 average team. Let me know what they say.

Falcons just take your time for each game you play

[...] Nobody in the press box is discussing the game. Which does, you’d have to admit, look like a pretty good one. But the weather has superseded [...]

Whether or not the Falcons win in post season doesn’t change the fact that Mike Vick stank when he was in Atlanta and he stinks now and Philadelphia was stupid for every bringing him into their franchise. He was never an intelligent quarterback, he could never pass with any accuracy and he was quick to get out of the tough football games claiming injury. All Vick every had going for him was the running play but to rely upon that in the NFL will not do it for a quarterback. For that matter, all of the so-called “running” quarterbacks suck in the NFL. Look at Carolina. Newton is big (at least in body) and he can run, but that is about all he has. He is not intelligent and he will never carry his team to even the playoffs. RG3 is the best in this category because he has the talent and good sense not to soley rely upon the run. One thing is for certain; he is much more talented as a quarterback than either Newton or Vick (or Randall Cunningham for that matter).

And the Falcons have one of the best and smartest quarterbacks in the NFL now. There is no comparison between Matt Ryan and Michael Vick. None. And the numbers prove it.

I knew the Falcons would EASILY beat Mike Vick & Co. in Philly. The reason is because right now, Vick and Reid are CLUELESS about what it takes a win a game. They are both bafoons and are sliding backwards into the abyss. BOTH WILL BE FIRED by years end due to mediocrity. Reid was once a great coach, but because helpless once he was swept under the captivating and enchanting spell of Mike Vick. Reid should have pulled Vick several games ago after the Eagles 3-1 start when things started to unravel and go south. Instead, Reid decided he would stick up for his quarterback and now both will go down like the sinking titanic. Again, Reid and Vick will both be gone by the end of this season.
