This isn’t exactly a revelation, given that I made the prediction nearly five months ago, but here, for late tuners-in, it is: I like Georgia over Florida. Believe it or not, I’m not alone.
The many men of Scouts Inc. — Todd McShay, Steve Muench and Kevin Weidl – have declared on ESPN Insider (link requires registration) that the Bulldogs will beat the Gators 26-23. Their reasoning, conveniently enough, dovetails with what I’m now thinking. Back in May, I was thinking Georgia would simply be the better team. It hasn’t been to date, which doesn’t mean it can’t be Saturday.
From the Scouts Inc. preview:
Signs can’t always be trusted, especially in rivalry games. So don’t be surprised when Georgia turns in its most emotionally charged effort of the year. For 60 minutes, all the elite individual talent on Georgia’s defense will work together as a unit, and it will be enough to hand the Gators their first loss of the season.
I just watched Georgia barely beat one of the worst Kentucky teams in my memory. (And I’m a Kentucky grad, and I have a long memory.) I also caught a goodly portion of the Gators’ thrashing of South Carolina. If last Saturday is the measure, the Bulldogs don’t have a chance. But no two games, I’ve learned over my now-lengthy life, are alike. Just because the Gamecocks kept giving Florida the ball doesn’t mean Georgia will.
Florida scored 21 first-half points against South Carolina while gaining 29 yards. The Gators’ three touchdown drives spanned a total of 32 yards. The Gamecocks fumbled a punt and a kickoff return, and the game was gone. If Georgia does the same, the Bulldogs could well lose by 33 points, too. But what if they don’t do the same?
Florida is seventh nationally in total defense. Georgia is 47th. That’s a big spread, but not as big as this: Georgia is 18th in total offense to Florida’s 100th. What if the Bulldogs hold the ball — which won’t be easy; the Gators are ninth-best in turnover margin — and make Florida drive 70 yards to score? (For the record, Florida’s 44 points against South Carolina came on a day when the Gators managed 183 yards.) What if the Gators, whose 114th-ranked passing offense sits three spots below Georgia Tech’s, fall behind and have to throw?
There’s no question Georgia’s defense has underperformed. That doesn’t mean this unit is without talent. These are mostly the same defenders who enabled Georgia to finish fifth nationally in total defense last season. They’re capable of a big game in a big setting.
Yes, I’ve thought as much before about Georgia, often in a game involving Florida, and been wrong more times than right. But the dynamics of this installment have changed so quickly that the Bulldogs, who were the preseason pick to rule the SEC East, will arrive being given little chance to win by most observers, many Bulldog fans among them. That’s not the worst place to be. Coaches love it when they’ve got a good team that’s being utterly dismissed.
Has Florida been impressive? Absolutely. Have the Gators had the better season? They have by far. But LSU had a better 2011 season than Alabama — heck, LSU even beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa — and that mattered not one whit when the two met again in the BCS title game.
If Georgia can win Saturday, it will override the memory of the bitter loss at South Carolina and position itself to play again for the SEC championship. So far we’ve seen only snippets, but I’m convinced there’s a complete game in these Bulldogs. I’m encouraged to know someone else agrees..

For the record, I haven’t been wrong about Georgia this season. Although given that the Bulldogs have won the six they were supposed to win and lost the one they weren’t, that’s not all that remarkable.

Mark – I wish I could share those same feelings. For me it’s how can a team decide when to turn it on when they have not played well(defense) for the past 6 games? I sure hope I’m wrong and you’re right. I just see the Gators scoring early and often then cruising in the 2nd half. It might even be comical.

I don’t think the Dawgs can just flip on that switch and beat Florida. Florida is more sound and disciplined on Defense . They will make few errors on offense and just wait for the Dawgs to make the mistakes. The Dawgs do this in all the big games. Right ?

there has been no more important game over the past several years than this one. not for the reasons we’re all talking about either, not the sec race, bcs race, no, the chance to hang 2 (yes, think about that), 2 games in a row since the 80’s. until we can a least play .500 ball, consistently, against the gators, we will always be second tier SEC program.

Mark… I love the optimism, but I can’t see Georgia winning with a score like 26 – 23 which would amount to an SEC shootout. I think our only shot is the fact that Florida’s offense isn’t quite elite. Assuming they can score 23 points on our defense, which isn’t difficult to imagine, I don’t see how we can outscore them. As you said our only shot is for the defense to step up big time and giving up 23 to Florida’s offense would not be stepping up big time.
Just like when we were down early in the South Carolina game, I knew the game was over because there was no way our offense would score 21+ points on South Carolina’s defense. Well Florida’s defense looks even better…. so count me in as someone that doesn’t believe Aaron Murray and our offensive line can get it done against an elite defense. I hope to heck they prove me wrong.

Good column. As a Gator fan I don’ tknow what to make of this game. I think UGA definitely has the talent to win this game, even win it big. Florida is great on defense and special teams, but we haven’t HAD to score a bunch of points in a hurry. If Florida gets down by 14 -17 points, can it come back? I just don’t know. There are still 5 games left in the season and anythig can happen.

I agree, I think our unit has a complete game waiting in them. The one thing we can’t afford is meltdowns like the one in the first quarter in Columbia, or the one that let Tennessee back in the game at the end of the half. Or like South Carolina’s first half meltdown at Florida.
I think our defense shows up hitting hard for this one, and that makes it a different ball game.

The Whether Forecast: The DAWGS will lose bigtime Sat. and there will be a fan mutiny. Bobby Petrino will be asked to finish the season for Richt. Dawgs fans don’t care about that Falcons stuff, as Atlanta is in another state as far as they are concerned. They will forgive Petrino for his “personal indiscretions” and point to Bill Clinton and what he did. After all he was from Arkansas too. After winning 2 or 3 games BP will then surprise everyone by marrying Wynonna Judd, who will divorce her now bodyguard-husband who just lost a leg in a motorcycle accident. Don’t know if BP is divorced or not as no one has said. If not, he will be shortly. That info per my neighbor, Clair Voyant who sees all and knows all. What’s the point of being a college football fan without an unrealistic, overwhelming sense of optimism for your team, even when things aren’t looking good? This is what college football is all about….that’s why we love it…anything can happen
Here’s how it’s gonna shake down MB: Georgia is gonna come into this game uber-motivated and beat the crap out of Florida, ruining their #2 BCS ranking and re-igniting this great rivalry…then Georgia will win out and squeak into the SECCG and somehow, by the grace of God, beat Nick Saban and his unholy army…then that victory will propel UGA into the NC game and we will somehow beat whoever it is we are pitted against, winning the NC for the first time in over 30 years…
Then, following this emotional high, CMR will resign in comfort and we will get Kirby Smart to take over in late January. It will be a smooth transition….Richt bashers will be happy bc we have a new coach with some fire….Richt defenders will be happy bc the guy we all love and respect won the crystal ball……
Too optimistic Mr. Bradley?

The Dogs will get killed. The defense may not be playing up to its potential but the offensives stats has everyone fooled about BooBoo. Against USC, UGA should have brought in 2 TE’s with a fullback to block. Instead, idiot BooBoo was convinced his offensive linemen could block USC instead of bringing in help — shows he doesn’t know how to coach. He will do the same against UF. One thing this idiot has not learned is that to win in the SEC you have to be able to run. And special teams? I can’t believe we have all of these skilled players that can return punts for long yardage and/or TD’s and we place someone back there who all they can do is fair- catch the ball.

Mark, if UGA can muster more than a 20 point lead at halftime then I agree with you. One of the liabilities thus far (including past seasons) has been the lack of halftime adjustments. Bradley, Your problem is that you have only watched Florida against South Carolina and that alone won’t be enough in prognosticating the Florida-Georgia game. This Florida team is resilient, tough and can impose their will upon a team. Against the Gamecocks, the Gators took it to the HBC’s team from the opening bell & won going away 44-11. While struggling a bit against Vandy but in the end, Florida had no problems in dispatching both the Commodoers (31-17) & the Kentucky Wildcats (38-0). UGA seemed to struggle against UK.
But, Florida has trailed at the half & seemingly done for against the following teams:
- @TAMU: trailed 10-17 –> UF’s defense shuts down Johnny Manziel & the Aggie offense while the Florida offense takes the lead behind Gillislee’s running & wins 20-17.
- @Tenn: trailed 10-14 –> UF’s defense again stymies Tyler Bray & the Vols while the Gators have a monster day on offense: 300+ yards rushing/ 500+ total yards of offense; UF wins 37-20. Trey Burton had a huge day in the wildcat-formation.
- LSU: 0-6 –> In the 2nd half, UF’s defense completely shuts down Mettenberger & the Tigers as UF goes on two long TD drives behind Mike Gillislee’s rushing (34 rushes 134yd 2TD); UF wins 14-6. Against LSU’s vaunted defense, Florida runs 25 straight times to maintain possession of the ball (37 min.).
While Florida’s offense is only ranked 100th, UF’s style (a 1980s sec team) is to be a hard nosed, running team style that leads the sec in time of possession which only helps the defense & the Gators’ ultimate goal of winning the ball game. Georgia’s only hope to even stay in the game is to not have any turnovers by either their QB (Murray)/RB’s or the rest of their team!

Lost in all the UF owning UGA talk is the fact they usually have a week off. Ever since Spurrier got to UF, they have had a week of for all but a few years. This year, they not only play the week before, its against South Carolina. This should work in UGA’s favor.
UF isnt as dominant as people pretend. That was a banged up South Carolina team coming off playing UGA and @LSU. Lattimore couldnt even start. Were that game played in November as it usually is, SC likely has a far better showing and possibly wins the game.

UGA’s offense has to show up in this game. They must play physical on both sides of the ball, and can’t give away turnovers like they did against Tennessee. If UGA’s offense comes to play, I like their chances. UF’s offense is not very good and mostly feeds off the fact their defense has been one of the most dominant units in the country.

I totally agree with you Mark. UF has not played an offense with this many weapons in the backfield and at WR and have not faced a QB that can pick them apart if given the time. I also think that Shawn Williams calling out his defensive players will fire them up. For a top 2 team I’ve been totally unimpressed with UF’s offense. The Dawgs will load the box and force Driskell to beat them with his arm which has not shown yet he can do. I believe that being out of it and suddenly getting a second chance will inspire the Dawgs. Dawgs 24-UF 17.

I like UGA in this one.
Florida has no offense. 54th in scoring 100+ ranked in total offense.
They win on turnovers and pray for a special teams td.
Driskell just can’t throw well. UF passes for 140 less yards per game than UGA,
For UF to win:
1- Must get a punt or kick return td
2- Must force 3 turnovers
3- must run for 200 yards against an 8 man front filled with 7 future NFL players.
Murray had a terrible game last season, but UGA won 24-20. Murray doesn’t need his A game, or his B game to beat the inept Gators.
Their defense hasn’t been tested by a balanced offense yet.
UGA knows how to beat them:
1- Win the turnover battle
2- run the ball down their throats like last year for 180+ yards
3- stop the run with 8 man fronts, force Gators to throw, which they can’t
Worked in 2011.

JPP…what a rational and measured point of view. Nice change of pace from the typical trash talking between fans on this blog. Assuming no big advantage on turnovers or special teams materializes…really comes down to wether the UGA defense finally makes an appearance. If they do, advantage to Dawgs because of the offensive side of the ball. If not, Outback bowl here he come.

Some prognosticators believe they see a sucker bet. UGA is being completely written off. UF is on a roll, but maybe overconfident. There is still all of that talent at UGA and the pressure has been lifted, which has been the #1 reason UGA has lost so many in JAX. Sounds great!
However, this is a time when what you see is what you get at UGA. UGA has yet to play well this season (exception Vandy, if that is a true exception). UF has improved weekly. Football is not a sport where you can just turn it on. A team has to build up to a great performance. UGA has not put in the work. UF has. UGA might come out and hit them in the mouth, but eventually they will lose. Not to mention UF has Pease and UGA has Bobo and CMR. Decided advantage for UF in a close game. I’m a Dawg fan and I won’t be able to help becoming excited and hopeful as the week wears on; However, I’m writing this while I still have some objectivity.

For Uga to win a lot of things have to happen:
1) UGA has to come out motivated and believing they’re destined to win. The coaches can’t subconciously project anxiety/fear or the Dawgs will come out like deer in the headlights (see USCe).
2) Grantham has to have the Dawgs playing an aggressive scheme. 7-8 in the box, mix in blitzes, and play man. Uga players are talented, let them play to their talent. They get passive and confused with too much zone.
3) On again, off again Bobo has to call a good game. Including being patient with the run game and not going into a shell if UGA gets a lead.
4) UGA has to match UF’s intensity for the full 60 minutes. Mental toughness is paramount. If UGA is in the game late, they must have the fortitude not to flinch if UF tries to turn up the heat and take the game over.
5)Finally, UGA has to get LUCKY. They have to win the TO battle.
IF all of these things happen, Uga can win. What are the odds that all of these things happen?

You must be kidding, really? Lets’ review Bradleys’ reasoning: UGA will win Saturday because: 1) It’s a rivalry game? 2) Scount insiders are also picking UGA? 3) Just because the Dogs haven’t looked very good lately, doesn’t mean they won’t play better this week? 4) LSU lost in a rematch with Bama, so that could happen here? OK…If my Aunt Wilma had a mustache, she would look like my Uncle Fred…Just because the sun came up today, doesn’t mean it will come up tomorrow?? How about these REAL reasons Florida should win this week: 1) Except for Vandy, Gators have already shown they have performed better, against common opponents..(Tn, SC, Ky) 2) Not only do they have the better defense, but a MUCH better kicking game 3) One of the UGA starting lineman won’t play, on a suspect Defensive Line 4) Never a good sign when one of your players calls out his teammates in public..5) Rivalry? UGA beating Florida this weekend?
Could happen!
Would love to see it!
But doubt it will happen. Gators are coming together – and they are finding ways to win games in the second half. In fact, they are just dominating teams in the second half.
Why?
Because they are winning the game in the trenches and come mid 3rd quarter – they have worn down the opponent. combine that and the fact they are not turning the ball over and pound the ball. Their OC is creative in the running attack.
So if UGA gets beat by Florida – they need to be carefull not to get upset by Ole Miss. Ole Miss is playing hard and improving – could be an upset.
So, if UGA gets beat by Florida – then under the Richt era:
Alabama hired a coach and passed UGA’s program.
Arkansas – Petrino passed UGA’s program – and if they played tomorrow – I am not sure who would win – based on the Ark/KY game – probably ARK.
Florida – Urban quickly placed UGA ahead of Richts program and made Richt his personal bit*h! Now Muschamp has Florida playing above UGA.
LSU – UGA went neck and neck – but Les Miles has kept LSU in the national spotlight and on an elite level – and making coaching changes to raise the bar – even when they are good. unlike UGA – where coaching changes are made because disaster has struck,
South Carolina – Hmmm, Spurrier is 4-4 against UGA at USCe – and has won the last 3 games in a row. which program is better?
At the end of the day – if being a good program and consistently the 5th 6th or 7th best program in the SEC – then no complaints. By the way – the 5th , 6th or 7th best team in the SEC is a top 2 program in the ACC, a top 3 program in the B1G and P12, and top 4 in the B12.
If UGA wants to raise the bar and make a run at being nationally elite – it will need to make a coaching change.
Again – rooting for UGA this weekend, but judging on how UGA plays top shelf opponents under Richts guidance over the last 5 years – Florida will win this game………..MARK IT DOWN!!!!

Roll Tide with Pride – I hate to admit this – but your post is pretty factual. UGA is a good program. We are on the top end of the good teams – but their appears to be a large gap to bridge to consistently be one of the nationally elite big dawgs!
We could go 11-2 this year – and be disappointed and 3rd in the SEC East.
Bottom line, with all the returning talent on defense, a top flight QB, good receivers and surprising good running backs – plus a taylor made schedule. If we can not position for a BCS or a run at a National Title this year – then when????
For 2012 – we failed our first real test on a two test season. Test #2 this weekend.

Georgia wins if their OL plays the game of their combined lives against one of the best and deepest defenisve lines and a group of talented and solid linebackers as there is in the SEC. I think it is that simple. And Georgia has to stop the run and force Florida to pass the ball deep in their own territory and hope that Driskel starts to make mistakes…..something he has not done all year. If Georgia is unable to run the ball, Florida will pin their ears back and chase Murray down.
Personally, I think the final score will be very close and can go either way. Georgia is very good. Florida is very good. Going to be fun to watch in JAX for sure.

……and…..too bad Georgia lost to SC. Imagine how BIG this game would be…….and none of you would be talking about firing your head coach. I hope Georgia does fire Richt…..because that will open a closed door to Tunsil and make it a Bama vs. Florida deal…..If Georgia wins Saturday….I think Tunsil will commit to Georgia shortly after that. If Georgia loses and the heat of Richt increases……Florida continue to chase Tunsil…..and Bama will amp up the recruiting pressure for Tunsil even more.

If you are a realist…..then you better start getting real with your predicted score. Muschamp’s approach to games does not project with the Gators scoring over 50 on anyone. I do not think either team will score more than 28 points in this game. More like a 27-21 type of score. Georgia will score points……but will they be able to not turn the ball over vs. the Gators D and stop the Gator running game. Sorry….but the Georgia defense has not played like the LSU and SC defenses. Florida made Kentucky look like a high school team. Kentucky moved the ball on Georgia and could have won that game. I know two games have nothing to do with the next game……but Georgia better fix a lot of things on D if they expect to win this game vs. a much more talented team than Kentucky. And Georgia better not get behind Florida this year like they did last year. And Driskel is not a one legged Brantley waiting to get hit by Jarvis Jones this year either.

What Gator games have you been watching lately. Florida has not been making a lot of stupid, unsportsmanlike penalties this year. Florida has two unsportsmanlike penalties called vs. SC….and it one was a phantom call vs. Jenkins on the SC QB and one was for roughing the snapper on a punt….and Morrison clearly waited the required amount of time before knocking the snapper on his arse. The ref penalized Morrison because he hit him so hard….not because he did anything illegal. Muschamp went crazy on both calls….which were bogus at best. Florida has played hard, tough, and fast this year…..but very clean this year as well. But you can think what you want.

Well, let me start with what we have learned from this. First, there is no random drug testing policy at the AJC. Second. I to watched both games last week. Anyone with a brain and an eye for ANY football would bet the ranch on Florida. Third. Dawgs are still coached by Richt, Bobo and Grantham. Florida could pull out a tape from 3 years ago and scheme for us, just the uniform numbers change. Fourth. Georgia has not beat a ranked team in almost 4 years. Probably no the number two team in 40. fifth. It’s Florida. The only Richt wins ( 3) have been very sub par Florida teams, with last years train wreck Gator team with NO QB closer than it looked. …..Look, this is a great read, but check back here Saturday about for major retraction. The dawgs won’t win Saturday, and won’t even come close, and here’s why. Our defense sucks and they lack heart. Furthermore, the coaching staff is the reason why the defense has no heart. On top of that Florida beat a top 10 team. Something UGA hasn’t done in recent memory. Plus its Florida who UGA never plays well against. Sorry, but UGA seems like a pretty silly pick here Mark. I know you want to play the hopeful homer but be realistic every once in a while.

Wishful thinking, but not really plausible Mark. The USS “CMR Might Win a Big Game” sailed a long, long time ago. No one’s not going to sucker me into thinking they’ll be any more motivated, better coached, or better prepared that they were for South Carolina (or Bama in 08, etc., etc,, etc.) To suggest otherwise really just seems like a ploy to increase webpage traffic (and hence ad revenues).

UGA 52 for 358 yds
UF 55 for 462 yds
Watching Grantham’s defense’s over the years, I’m impressed here thinking maybe they’re avoiding the 15 yarders. Usually, they have a habit of playing, well, stupid in years past. Not so bad ths year?

Jeff – You’re going to need to hang your hat on more than just emotion on why UGA wins this game. I can tell you right now this game will be won or lost on how effective the lines are. If UGA can’t block the d-line and if florida’s o-line can get a push, it could be a tough day. UGA is going to have to match the physicality on both sides of the ball. Florida is going to bully. And as they’ve done all year, they are looking to sap a teams will to compete by the second half. It’s not pretty football but it’s effective..

Yes USC was playing much better than the Dawgs that night but who knows what could have happened if the second play would have been an interception instead of a 69 yd gain…just like the first play in the USC/Fla game…Both were games of momentum that just got away from the eventual losers. The S Carolina game was horrible for the Dawgs…but I do not think it defines them. I am changing my tune. I think the Dawgs can get it done vs. Florida!

As a disenchanted uga fan, i have to say Florida beats them. The way uga has played and the simple fact that they have not played as a team (nor had all starters on the feild at the same time since game one). UGA wins 1 out of every 4 years.
save your money to Jacksonville, and come to statesboro on Nov. 4th for a better game as GSU (the real GSU, for you Georgia State people ) shows you how football is played.

Do you think about what you are writing? Do you actually read it before sending in for print?
UGA is 18th in total offense because they have only played one quality defense and was held to 224 yards, just about half their season average. There goes your “big spread” in offense.
How about this big spread. Two common opponents. Tennessee, UGA gives up 44 points and 478 yards, Florida 20 points and 340 yards. South Carolina. UGA gives up 35 points and 392 yards, Florida 11 points and 191 yards.
Florida has beaten BCS #6 LSU and BCS #20 Texas A&M. In both of those games they were down at half and dominated the second half. They pounded LSU and wore them down running the ball. UGA just gave up over 200 yards rushing to Kentucky. That is a problem. They are confident and are playing tough. UGA, not so much.
Does UGA have a chance to win? Of course they do, these are college kids playing a game and anything can happen on a Saturday. Taking the time to write a column trying to give logical reasons why when there are no logical reasons is a waste of time. Save the effort. Next time write this:
UGA Will Win…I FEEL IT.

Gator that is pure spin and you know it. The LSU game their were multiple plays where flags should have been thrown on both side for extracurricular pushing and late hits.
Your gators are also next to last in the SEC in least penalties.

This here is smart thinking and right on targets on how Dawgs is set up to ambush the sorry Gaytors. No one giving Dawgs chance cause we mulliganed SCar. But that close a month ago. Dawgs got rested and game plan to expose talents on Gaytors. Aaron Murray is best SEC QB and Dawgs have his experience to minimal turnovers while Gaytors is do to give ball away. Look for Dawgs lines to show up and dominants. And then Murray have all day to pick Gaytor secondary a part. With one two punch of winning trenches and better more experienced skill like Aaron Murray. Dawgs win easy.

With the 28 point loss most would change their FL prediction. Not you. You can’t would not make the advertisers happy to go with the obvious and have less than 100 show up, would it.

Forget the team with the best offense. Why do I give UGA a better chance now at winning the game…because of the inspiring words of Shawn Williams firing the defense UP!
Bradley, Im starting to like you a little bit…because you arent hatin on the Dawgs as much as in the past really. Georgia has a history under Richt of first screwing their season up and then going out and screwing some other team’s life up. Once the pressure is off they play like the team advertised in the first place. This game is a pressure cooker. They will be more out of control than any game this year.
The one factor Florida beat both top ranked teams at home. Jacksonville is not home despite the state it is being played in. Florida was not very good last year and suddenly is a world beater. Like South Carolina, the question is can they travel. I think the Florida I have seen this year will win, but I got a feeling there is another Florida underneath a bad one we haven’t seen yet and they are due. Can a fried up Bulldawg team of thugs take advantage of it.

A UGA win vs. Florida is a possibility, but so unlikely.
Mr. Stein, UGA seems to save their best game for Tech for several reasons: They are always a lot better than Tech. They have no fear of Tech at all, because recent history shows that the game almost always goes their way. Tech, on the other hand, always chokes against UGA. This is because recent history shows that if they get close, something will always happen to swing the game in UGAs favor. The players on the field seem to know this and they just go through the motions. There is seldom an attitude that they feel they can win. Having the best players wins for you 80% of the time. The rest of it is attitude and emotion.

‘“So many” calling for Richt’s head? No one is.’
You are wrong about that. There are three classes of people out there. Those of us who want to see Richt demoted or fired and don’t care who replaces him – we are tired of mediocre football – it is no fun. There is a second group who realize that Richt is a mediocre coach and wish we could change but resist calling for his outer because “who else would be better.” Then there are the Richt-o-philes who love Richt and think that how you coach is much better than if you win or lose, and they are fine with these 10-win seasons and no NC, as long as they have a nice, Christian man coaching the team.
There are quite a few of the first category.

You’re wasting your breath Beast from the East. The backwoods mentality of most of these “fans” here prevents them from accepting simple logic or fact. Teams that are ahead of them in their division are only successful because they play weak teams. Teams that beat them are lucky or are given breaks. Never could they conceive that other teams respond to a disappointing year(s) (ie: UF, USCAR, and one day soon TN) and actually make off-season adjustments that are reflected in on-the-field performance, something that they are incapable of doing. Somehow this evades them as does the direct correlation, or lack thereof, between a top ten recruiting class each year and an automatic trip to the NC. But since they can prove none of their theories, they simply sit aloof and judge others or make bogus suppositions.
So here’s my theory: This year’s UGA y with Florida’s schedule would be sitting at three conference losses right now, with one more coming this weekend. And don’t get all pissy about that UGA Ys. I have no proof, but neither do you for any of your BS woulda, coulda, shouldas.

The Defense has the capability….it has just not performed up to expectations. Murray can get it done. However, our Achille’s heel, the o-line, will cost us….they (unlike the d) are NOT capable. Unless we have some turnovers/big plays, we will have a time. We do not have the hosses up front to play smash-mouth, which is exactly what Florida does. I am a fan, and I hope we win. But our lack of successful recruiting on the o-line tends to show up in games like this EVERY SINGLE TIME!

I’m sure that this weekend’s UGA Y loss will be due to the fact that JAX is closer to Gainesville than Athens. Using that logic, the loss will be much worse than 35-7, because Athens is closer to Columbia than it is to JAX. I’m sure we could figure out the exact score using Mapquest and a ratio. UGA, on the other hand, will hand the ball to an opponent – think Murray being sacked, not hard, just being sacked. What does he do, he just drops the ball. Of course, if someone actually hits him hard, the ball will defeintiely come loose. Second, why would you think our OL can block players on a very good defense when they can not block players on very bad defenses. Third, how much are you willing to bet that Murray will not have at least one pass tipped and intercepted? Fourth, our defense is down-right pitiful. Fifth, our boys are now bickering among themselves. Sixth, CMR has totally lost the respect, and therefore, control, of the team. Seventh, we commit the dumbest penalties every single game. How many false starts do you predict we’ll have Saturday. I predict “too many” beginning on the first offensive possession. Finally, contrary to what your colleague “I see nothing, I know nothing Shultz” says, I expect Florida’s OB to actually play better than our QB is this game. Driskell does not appear to be a choker.

$50 here says Richt will defer to the 2nd house if we win the toss. Florida goes down the field on our pathetic defense and scores on the opening drive, our players get rattled just like the South Carolina game, the momentum is clearly with Florida and we start self imploding.
Same scenario as the South Carolina game and the blackout game against Bama in 08. You think Richt will ever learn in the these type of games you have to jump on your opponent first??
With a defense like ours, deferring to the 2nd half is the LAST thing you want to do!! Jump on them first Richt!!!!!!
Make that bet a $100, not 50. Richt is an idiot.

We better try blitzkrieg….trench warfare ain’t us! UGA has a decent record every year, but it is not that simple. We beat the patsies, but lose to the good teams. Muschamp has passed us already…..laugh if you want, but Dooley will do the same given time. They realize that you gotta have Clydesdales up front…..not just in size but work-ethic. LSU, ‘Bama, S.C., Florida, and quite possibly Mississippi State have passed us, and we have the talent. Between missed assignments on the D, and a little poor tackling, an inferior o-line that has not been addressed for awhile and has been our wekest point of all I cannot for the life of me understand how we get such high rankngs.

Georgia could beat Florida if somehow the Gators have a meltdown and Georgia plays an almost perfect game. But that “ain’t” likely to happen considering the momentum the two teams have. Gators on the rise and the DAWGS floundering. Wish it wasn’t so. But historically a few strange things have happened in this game.

It seems like picking UGA is now the in thing. One thing I have seen over the past few years is that we don’t live up to the hype. Especially this year. Besides Vanderbilt I haven’t seen a consistent performance. That is coaching my friends. The bickering this week with players calling others out is another example. What do you think would happen if Saban found out his players were playing safe to protect their NFL chances? I think Kentucky showed us that it isn’t the talent that wins it is the will to play hard. Put the 22 in the game that want to beat the Gators the most. Even if that means sitting half the defensive starters.

Not sure GA has lived up to its potential this season, so yes, an upset could be in the making, but very unlikely. Consistency is the hallmark of great teams, not one big win every so often. One question needs to be asked though Mr Bradley. If you had to put your life savings on one of these teams with no point spread considered, and no motivation to push your column and sell the AJC newspaper, who would it be? My guess is, you’d bet on FL!! Am I right? If not, you’d be a fool to bet on GA based on their play vs FL’s play this season.

The stats are more a reflection of who you play than who you are. It’s true UF offense stats aren’t good, but the defenses they have faced are much better than what UGA has seen. Ranked common opponent is USC. USC pretty muched stuffed both UGA and UF offense. UF has figured a way to beat 3 ranked teams. Its a very tall order for UGA to beat a ranked team based on recent and not so recent past. UGA has a shot, but on paper, logic UF should win. I don’t think in a blow out.

Its not the first time that Georgia has gone into a game as an underdog.
Sometimes I would rather go in as the underdog and pull the upset than as the favored team an have to live up to expectations.
I remember when Georgia was not given a chance against Texas in the Cotton Bowl after the 1983 season and the Dogs went in and beat the Longhorns 10-9.
No one could believe it but the players. They never quit believing or gave up on themselves. I was proud of them for that.

Georgia will lose and by a wide margin. The Dawgs give up far too many rush yards per game. Georgia’s rush defense averages giving up 167 yards per game. Correspondingly, Florida averages 212 yards per game rushing. Before the UGA game last week, Kentucky averaged 106 yards per game and they put up 202 yards rushing against the Dawgs defense. IMO, Bradley is way off base and the Gators win big in Jacksonville this weekend. They may not even have to pass once. If they do, the Dawgs defense gives up 200 yards passing/game. Looks like this game will be a highlight film for Jeff Driskel.

Pitbull, I was equally as proud after the Cotton Bowl you speak of, but wins like that have been nearly non-existent in the Richt era. Yeah, I was proud of the team after the Pat Dye man enough game with Bama, but there have been far too few knock the door down type games, and EVERY time Richt has made it to Atlanta he has backed into it. This year’s game in Jacksonville is the most important game of Richt’s football coaching career, and that goes for any games when he was involved in as an assistant at FSU.
I guess the rumors are just that about Richt walking away after the season, as he is talking about coaching kickers next year. What a joke. He has the opportunity to muzzle the critics this weekend, and I for one hopes he does, but hoping don’t mean a whole lot. Not getting my hopes up like I always have. I kind of have that same sick feeling before every big game like I did when Ray Goff was coaching in the later years of his tenure, and I hate that.

Now that I am done laughing at this story, I can finally comment.
Florida’s offense is oddly similar to South Carolina’s and their defense is much better than SC’s. Florida has been taking care of business just like they did against LSU (Way better than UGA) and SC (Again way better then UGA).
Will the chihuahuas of Athens be all fired up and “emotionally charged”? Sure and so will Florida. Florida knows that they punch their ticket to the SEC Championship game and a date with destiny with Alabama. Ultimately it will be the under performing defense of UGA and the bad play calling of Mike BooBoo that will end the mangy mutts.
Heck, you barely beat us and you really think you can beat Florida? Mark, it is time for you and the WalMart UGA fans to go back to rehab.

I’m one voice on here, not the voice of many GD. I have no hatred toward UGA, but am just trying to be as subjective as possible. I know the dawgs have alot more potential and talent than what they’ve shown this yr. I think part of that is playing a soft schedule. You gotta go through some tough games and adversity to really bond as a team, and I’m not sure the dawgs have been able to do that. The gators seem to be playing a nasty defense and steady/error-free offense, so that’s bodes well for them. But, yes, upsets happen all the time, and very likely might happen this Sat., but I’m just saying the logical pick on paper and mojo is the gators.

That’s the thing aboit UGA football. Because the athletes are there to be a top tier team, we all expect them to play that way. But they play much more predictably than our hopes are. So when we pull ourselves away from the cool-aid and face the facts, we get pretty accurate at predicting the outcome. It’s a Fla. win. The defense will be out coached by their Boise State offensive coordinator, The offense will be out coached by Muschamp. And their team will play harder to win. So there you go.

Florida is most definitely a good team this year. As much as it pains me to admit it, we’re being evaluated pretty accurately.

Ahh, Mark. I was like you once. Had all the blind faith in the world that the dawgs could beat any team, well, excluding the Teboe days where they did win one. I lost that faith this season when they opened against Buff and the D left me wondering what the hey was going on. It continued the same excluding Vandy up to the beat down in columbia and that bewildering showing in KY. Last year in Jax, they were down 17-3 to a much weaker FL team had to ralley to win in the 2d half. This year they face a much improved FL defense and offense. If the dawgs had to struggle last season to a weaker FL what makes you believe they can beat a better FL this season? As much as I would love to see them beat FL the trend of GA folding in big games is too much to over come. I doubt the D will do much better vs FL then it has against those teams its already played. Any coach that has to continually wait until the 2d half to fix a leaky D should not be coaching in the SEC. Dawgs will continue their ways of giving up chunks of yards on the ground and thru the air. If by some miracle they slam the door on FL’s O I say where the hell have they been all year. Only way GA wins is if Murray somehow has the game of his life. No T/O’s and the OL can withstand FL’s rush and keep them on the field all day. The dawgs and their coaches this season have been the most baffeling team in the country. No one can guarantee what team is going to show up on game day. Can only hope that w/divine intervention the winner in them shows up in JAX.

Total yards on offense doesn’t mean much to me, because it’s a symptom stat. It’s a result of field position which is usually a function of turnovers and the kicking game. One statistic that deserves to be kept is “Yards per Point.” Florida’s 44 points off of only 183 yards should be a point of strength, not something negative. I commend them.

1. Murray’s prep & arm
2. William’s words of critique.

Being opportunistic and finding a variety of ways to score is a tried and true formula for winning football games. In Georgia’s lone perfect season, 1980, we beat very good Clemson and Notre Dame teams with offensive stats that weren’t impressive. I doubt the box score from the 1980 Tennessee game was that impressive, either.
There are only two stats that really matter in a football game: Points Scored, and Points Allowed. Win that battle and you win the war, period. How you get there doesn’t matter.
And anyone who thinks that Florida didn’t kick South Carolina’s rear end didn’t watch the same game I watched.
We need to play our best game in years to have any chance Saturday. Somehow the Dawgs are going to have to leave behind the tendency to choke in games like this. I’m not optimistic, but would love nothing more than to be proven wrong.

UGA players are not paid despite a scholarship. Why would they risk their money-making future to win a few games for other people’s entertainment?
Do you care about them if they cannot make a living after their college career? I don’t blame them.
____________________
So the players should never give 100% effort in college because they’ve only received scholarships (instead of cash) and might jeopardize their future earnings potential?
Sounds like the perspective of a loser to me.

…..and by the way……no one that works in the national media wants Florida to beat Georgia. And based on some of the calls made by the refs in the Florida vs. SC game last week……maybe there are people in other places that do not want an undefeated team headed into the SEC title game vs. Bama.

If Ga loses this game, McGarity needs to demand that the game be moved to Athens every other year when Ga is the home team. Fla has way too many advantages playing an hour from Gainesville and Ga has to travel a lot farther. That’s why fla wins most of the time—I’m tired of fla having all the advantages.

I wish they’d play home-and-home, too, but the Jax excuse rings pretty hollow when you consider that UGA STILL owns the series–despite fla’s domination the past 2.2 decades.

It’s fun to think good things, and yes, as the week goes, I feel better and better about the Dawgs having a fighting chance. I’ll always have a feeling that UGA might win – as anyone should if they are actually a fan – but I do know to be cautious and promise myself well ahead of time to commit to the reality that UGA continually has problems with UF like the Braves have problems with ANYONE in the postseason. Enough with the complaints though – we should as UGA fans hate the Gators and that’s it. Go Dawgs.

UGA and Florida athletes match up pretty good, but the parity ends there. Florida’s coaches are much more inventive in how they use their talent. There’s no reason to believe Murray’s big-game failings will end. UGA’s lack of experience on the O line and softness on the D line will hurt badly. And finally, special teams bone-headed plays will give Florida at least 10 points. Florida easily beats the spread.

I’m a fan real fan also, nobody jumps higher or yells louder during a game, just ask my wife, I scare her all the tme. Just being realistic here though.
But looking at this game, our defense will get shredded. We couldn’t stop Buffalo or Kentucky, they ran all over us. No reason to believe we can stop Florida’s backs. Their wide receievers can take a short dump off pass and break it 70 yards. We can’t tackle at all. Their QB will kill us with runs on 3rd down to pick up the 1st down, just like the SC game. Florida will score 45 in my opinion.
Our only chance is to hang with them on offense and win like a 49-45 type of game. That’s our only hope. If Murray has a good game it’s possible. But we all know how these big games have turned out the last 4 years or so, we flop every time. I don’t see that changing under Richt.

Relax—fla will be overconfident, expecting an easy win. Plus, they haven’t played a QB yet as good as Murray—who is the best in the SEC–he will light up the fla secondary with big plays. Dogs win by 13—27-14!

Florida will NOT be overconfident! Muschamp will not allow that. Bean, you may be right about murray, but Manzel and Bray are pretty good QB’s, and if I recall, that kid Shaw did a number on your defense as well, so UF has played a few pretty good QB’s.
Bottom line though will be in the second half when Florida breaks UGa’s will. It has happened EVERY game this year. Their defense and Oline will just beat on you and grind you until you eventually give in…

Ok Dawg Nation and Mark,
Here I am to gladly take all the grief you want to heap on me. I picked The Dawgs to lose in a big way – by 35 points.
I happily admit I was wrong. The D showed up to play and what a game it was! The Florida O helped our Dawgs by turning the ball over (6 times?) repeatedly. Not sure why it took Infighting on the D squad to generate some emotion but you could see the players and even Richt full of peeandvinegar!
Sadly, our D gave The Dawgs to put this game away multiple times but Bobo’s playcalling was absolutely awful. Murray had a lousy game until the end. I don’t think we converted a first down until the fourth qtr. Credit Florida D but debit Bobo and Murray.
The deal is not sealed but with wins over Ole Miss, Auburn, Ga So and Ga Tech we’ll have had only one loss going into the SECC Game. If that happens then The Dawgs have a shot at something special. Bama looks too good to lose in my opinion but I’ve obviously been wrong before.
Mark, how the heck did you (and a couple of others) pick our Dawgs to win this!?

I was also wrong about Muschamp. He’s proven himself to be a DC not an HC. The guy was going to have an aneuism on the sideline. He looked like a little boy who didn’t get his ice cream for dessert.
I hope he stays at UF. If he loses to UGA again next year UF will unload him fast though.

That could explain why Mr. Bradley follows this stuff for a living and FRED makes posts that are wrong and never gives props admitting he was wrong…one thing I can say about Bradley in many years following him is when he is wrong he owns up to it and laughs about how bad he is at predicting this stuff. This year though (and last too) Mr. Bradley has been spot on in regards to the Dawgs.
