Heat Check: UGA isn’t exactly the hot choice in Jacksonville

Mark Richt poses with the only Gator coach against whom he has a winning record. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

Mark Richt with the only Gator against whom he has a winning record. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

The weekly Heat Check commences with a team that frankly didn’t look so hot Saturday night. But you’ve got to start somewhere.

GEORGIA: Picked in preseason to repeat as SEC East champs, the Bulldogs are a 6 1/2 point underdog to Florida on what is technically a neutral field. This tells us that the Gators have had the more impressive season to date, but you knew that already. Forecast: This doesn’t mean Georgia can’t win. On the contrary, how many times have the Bulldogs gone to Jacksonville with the better-looking team and lost?

FALCONS: Didn’t lose for the seventh consecutive Sunday. (Ha! Little joke!) But now the schedule gets intriguing, if not necessarily untenable. The next four opponents: Philadelphia (3-3), Dallas (3-3), New Orleans (2-4) and Arizona (4-3). Forecast: Win three of those four and the Falcons are looking at the NFC’s No. 1 seed come the playoffs. Win ‘em all and Don Shula and Nick Buoniconti and Mercury Morris get nervous.

GEORGIA TECH: So now we know. It was all Al Groh’s fault. (Kidding again.) Beating Boston College doesn’t prove much, but beats the heck out of not beating Boston College. Forecast: Not trying to get all pie-in-the-sky here, but it now seems the winner of the ACC Coastal will have at least three conference losses. If the Jackets run the conference table, they’ll have three conference losses.

GEORGIA STATE: Alas, the Panthers aren’t apt to run any tables. A week after beating Rhode Island, Georgia State lost to Villanova by 25 points. Of GSU’s seven losses, the closest has been by 21 points. Forecast: There’s a chance we’ve seen the final victory of Bill Curry’s coaching career.

BRAVES: Brian McCann had surgery, which complicates contractual things a bit. (But only a bit.) And the Cardinals, who have suddenly become the Braves’ nemeses, are on the brink of blowing a series in which they led 3-1. Forecast: If you’re the Braves, do you root for or against St. Louis tonight? I’m thinking against, but that might just be me.

HAWKS: They won two exhibition games at home. They’re 3-3 in games that don’t count. Forecast: The Hawks have only one exhibition game remaining — it’s Friday at Detroit — but the regular season doesn’t begin for 11 more days. And you thought the NBA playoffs lasted forever.

Further reading: Why Florida in Jax is a big game for Georgia — and an even bigger one for Georgia’s coach.

Fla looks good there is not doubt about that. The real reality is this is UGA/Fla. It really does not matter what the record is or how good either team is playing. This is the SEC and I hope UGA remembers that as I will be rooting for them Go Dawgs from Texas.

Dawgs are so bi-polar, you never know what you are going to get, but indications are the defense is so bad, we will have to outscore the gators in order to have a chance. I’m not sure the right defensive coordinator in GA was sent packing, maybe both needed to go.

I’m for the Giants, the Cardinals seem to always slip by the opponent, without being impressive. Time for someone to send them home in despair.

The Tigers are probably going to slam either in the WS.

Muschamp is also a much better coach than Richt, both in preparing and in game day coaching. Last year, Dawg fans were poking fun at UF for hiring him; who is laughing now? He messed up hiring Charlie Weis, but he corrected that mistake, and I wish we had him at UGA.

Winning the SEC east is like winning the ACC. It’s irrelevant. UGA’s schedule, not having to play LSU, ALA, is what really helps them to win the division.

And what is their record against UF, 4-12 in the last 16 years? By UGA’s own definition, that is NO rivalry. UF owns UGA.

Transcript from this week’s UGA-UF Game-planning meeting with CMR, CMB and CTG:

CMR: Sorry I’m late. This whole singing-to-recruits thing is getting out of hand. I just finished singing “Call Me Maybe” to A. Kamara and “Forget You” to D. Henry. I’ve got 16 more requests today alone! Let me ask; do you guys see me as more of a Casey Kasem or a Cousin Brucey? Personally, I love the long-distance dedication….

CMB: Excuse me coach, can we talk about the WLOCP? What’s in the sack anyway?

CMR: Oh that…well, it’s my special “WLOCP Bag O Tricks”. It’s got stuff like end-zone choreography and Halloween-themed uniform gimmicks. I was thinking that this year we could go with the Invisible Man theme because the pollsters clearly don’t appreciate how good we are. What do you think?

CMB: I’ve got 2 names for you: Worley & Henderson!

CMR: Awesome! Who the heck are they?

CMB: 2 dynamic freshmen running backs who, many, many years ago, ran roughshod on then #1 UF, spoiling the Gators’ season.

CMR: Jackpot!! Are they available this weekend?

CMB: No, well, uh, I was drawing a parallel between them and Gurley/Marshall…

CMR: Gotta tell ya’ CMB, I don’t know what you’re talking about half the time, but I love That Thing You Do (CMR stands with air-microphone, begins singing, pointing at CMB) “You…Doing That Thing You Do….”

CTG: Excuse me! Can we talk defense now?

CMR: Oh, of course big fella, sorry bout that! I didn’t see you sitting there behind the Independence Bowl trophy. Fire away…

CTG: I’ve decided that this week, we’re going to just play our base defense, but with a wrinkle! Here’s the really big part…you ready??…I’m going to direct choking gestures at Jeff Driskel the entire game! He will become so un-nerved he will eventually wet himself!

CMR: Fantastic idea! I love Psy-ops, mind-games type stuff! I’ll add that to my “WLOCP Bag O Tricks”! (CMR grabs air-mic again, points at CTG, begins singing AC/DC’s Whole Lotta Rosie) “Let me tell you a story, ‘bout a DC I know, comes to coaching, he steals the show, he ain’t exactly pretty, ain’t exactly small. 35-7! You can’t say we’ve won ‘em all”……..

CTG: We done here??

CMR: Yes, sorry, got carried away. Gotta get to my weekly press briefing anyway. Instead of the usual boring Q&A, I’m going to sing, “Walking on Sunshine”! I’m thinking a little Katrina and the Waves will soothe those fourth-estate savages! See ya’ in Jax fellas!

Mark Bradley,

This is where your Lance Armstrong column should have been published. UCI did what only they could do — stripped Armstrong of all his Tour de France titles and banned him from the sport for life. Had USADA done the right thing and quietly given their report to UCI, and let UCI do what they ultimately did do (quietly review the evidence and rule), then USADA would have looked a lot better.

I read the full 200 page USADA report. It was damning. Truth is that when you read the report it is logically impossible to conclude Armstrong was not leading a cheating conspiracy all those years. I had confidence that UCI would do the right thing, and they did.

I disagree. Since about ‘08, the record shows exactly “what you are going to get.”

If the opponent is a ranked team, we have about a 15% chance of winning.

If the opponent is a Top 10 team, we have a 0% of winning.

Lastly, if the opponent is a Top 10 team, we have about a 75% chance of getting blown-out.

Florida’s offense isn’t good enough to beat you.

They rely on turnovers, got 7 in last 2 games.

Protect the ball, get a nice lead, and force Florida’s offense to win a game for them.

Florida is too agressive, burn them (trick plays, double moves, snap count variations, presnap movement on defense, etc.).

Kudos to Bad Dawg. That was funny.

When UGA used to go to Jax with teams that were not as talented as Fl, we always had better coaching. Dooley had the team prepared to play and Erk always had them fired up. That is the difference between the “old Dawgs” and the “new Dawgs”.

I was in Columbia and watched the team come onto the field, and said we looked business like. USC came onto the field like their hair was on fire and looked like rabid dogs attacking a meat wagon. I may be wrong, but football has to be played with a lot of emotion and fire. I know it doesn’t last all game, but maybe for more than two plays. I would rather lose playing with a lot of fire than look like I was buying a truck. You make make a few mistakes because of being too emotionally high, but what the he##, make the mistakes going 100 mph.

I have never felt so bad about being 6-1 going into the fl game as I do this one. Someone tell me why and how we have a chance.

Having Richt as coach has lately been like having the stomach virus. You’re sick, you know it, but you try very hard not to throw up and clean out your system so you can start to recover. But if we really stink up Jacksonville on Saturday, maybe McGarity will cleanse the system and we can start to get back to where we should be with all these top recruiting classes. So let’s go find a good toilet and do what needs to be done!

I expect another dose of destruction on Saturday and I don’t even want to watch it. Never in my life have I not wanted to watch. But this is what it’s come to.

Here’s Florida’s plan:
1- Get a td on special teams
(don’t punt or kick the ball to them)
2- Force 3-4 turnovers
Protect the ball, and force 3-4 of your own
3- Run the ball with 6 off linemen
Get a lead so they have to pass the ball, and pack 9 big bodies in the box

Dizzy, last year’s game has nothing to do with this year’s game, even if Florida had the same exact defense in 2012 as 2011. Why do you expect Georgia to RUN THE BALL FOR 200 YARDS when we have a totally different offensive line than 2011? That’s where it matters, and that’s what our coaching staff doesn’t understand. The greatest skill players in the country can’t do much if they have no offensive line. And when our coaches SEE that our line is sub par, apparently they believe the best way to attack with the run is to send 195lb Keith Marshall right up the middle REPEATEDLY. Dude’s gonna get killed.

Will Muschamp has the boys in Blue playing with his “fired up, in your face persona.” They have adopted his personality and it shows every game… They come out looking to dominate and impose their will on teams and make them quit, like they did against LSU… Watch and see, by the 4th quarter, UGA will be looking at the scoreboard wanting the clock to hurry up and wind off… This is one of the grittiest, teams I have seen play in a long time. No, they are not great offensively, but it isn’t necessary when they can impose thier will on teams… They come out looking to hurt teams!

Your logic of UGA losing when they’re favored meaning they’ll probably win as an underdog is flawed. Here’s better logic- UGA CANNOT beat good teams, and comes out scared, turning the ball over, and does not match their opponents intensity level whenever they have a big game. This is not a criticsm, but a fact. I wish I were wrong, but Florida 31- UGA 13.

Some of you dawg fans can’t see the forest from the trees. what makes you think the dawgs will suddenly play stellar defense when they’ve had their butts handed to them 6 out of 7 weeks where they couldn’t stop the run or pass from lesser oppponents and one of the worse running teams in the country (KY). Coaches and players keep saying week after week they need to get better/fix at stopping the run (and getting beat deep) but have yet to do it. We see the same porous defense week after week. If they haven’t suceeded yet proves they can’t fix it. It’s either coaching or the players themselves. Compare them to FL and look at whet they’ve been able to do. Shut down both SC (who creamed the dawgs) and LSU and A&M, not bad teams all. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to conclude they’re better on defense all of which bodes bad for the dawgs offense and FL will run thru and around the dawgs (terrible) defense. throw in the fact that CMR has a terrible winning record when he faces a ranked team. Unless the dawgs defense suddenly awakens from the dismal performances of the past and gets numerous T/O’s, stops FL dead, the OL is able to protect Murray and open holes for Gurshell, otherwise they don’t stand a chance. The only saving grace when they lose would be if the dawgs make a game of it and show some life on both sides of the ball and do not repeat what happened to them in SC. at least leave FL w/some pride.

It’s just that I’ve never seen AM play well when he’s under pressure, and we all know he’ll be under pressure Saturday. I’d love to see him scramble some, just to keep them honest. Roll out passes, fake the toss and keep it on a sweep…something, ANYTHING to break the monotony the CMB offense. Hate to sound negative here, but after watching the Kentucky game we are in serious trouble against Florida. Our defense is pathetic, plain and simple. If we couldn’t stop Kentucky’s running backs, then how are we going to stop Florida’s? They have excellent players at the skill postitions, can run after the catch and are fast. I see them busting some long runs in this game. Their QB can run, we all remember the SC quarterback running all over and around us to pick up the first down.

Our offense may be ok in this game but the defense is in trouble. Our kicking game is suspect, extra points are a gamble every time we try one.

Hate to say it guys but I see Florida big in this one.

Flat Tire,

I don’t think Muschamp will allow his players to come out flat. Did you see how flat our guys came out against Kentucky? And this was AFTER knowing that South Carolina had lost before ever hitting the field! Those guys should have been fired up, they had just been given new life!!

Richt is an Energy Vampire, no doubt.

The only chance the Dawgs have against Florida is if the swine flu gets the whole Gator team. The Dawgs had to squeak one past the 1-7 Wildcats.. Hahahahaha!

Don’t be so hard on Richt dogs, he ain’t doing that bad. Sure we have already passed you again and are on the way to Atlanta to try to take down Bama, not too likely I’m afraid, but you always have those CapitalOne bowls against Mich St or Purdue to look forward to so keep Richt around for awhile.

I want to thank all of you for the never ending laughs I recieve from reading these comments. Everyone ranting and raving on here just makes my work day go by a little faster. At the end of the day though nobody knows what will happen this Saturday in Jax, but we will all be watching. All you can really do is hope for the best and see how things play out. I’ll be sharing some good food, cold beer, with family & friends. Can’t wait. GO DAWGS! GATA!

the dogs will get waxed by muschamp and uf this weekend—another 10-2 season, with losses to the only 2 good teams they played. No, tech isn’t good and ga should beat them easy.

UGA fans who continiously criticize CMR are really pitiful and sad people. They
think UGA should win every game and some kind of championship every year. Get real folks. SEC is big boy football. Maybe you should start a campaign to go to the ACC. Then you could win anytime. As long as you are in the SEC be prepared to losea game or two every year. In the meantime, give CMR a break and ease up.

I’ve said this before. Either the Georgia players are’nt very good or Mark Richt can’t coach. Youall can decide which one it is.

[...] changed so quickly that the Bulldogs, who were the preseason pick to rule the SEC East, will arrive being given little chance to win by most observers, many Bulldog fans among them. That’s not a bad place to be. Coaches love it when [...]

A math lesson:
Blocking + Tackling = Football
We have the ability to tackle…..we are just not gettin’ it done.
We are lacking in ability up front……we can’t get it done with what we have against a good team.
Solution: Get an o-line so we are not at a disadvantage from the get-go (against decent teams.) D; live up to your potential. (You Do have potential, as opposed to the o-line……)

p.s. I am a fan…..have been to Jacksonville many times. I stick with ‘em win or lose, and do not get pouty because we lose. However, when we consistently fail to recruit/develop an SEC tier o-line, I will raise a racket. It is an insult to the fans for a team that was supposed to be top-tier to be so far behind Florida, Mississippi State, ‘Bama, LSU, and South Carolina in talent up front. I’d rather get bested by the better team that day than to have let our recruiting up front drop to where it has. If we were coming on, fine. (We are nit.) The team could possibly win on turnovers or big plays, but will not win in the trenches. For our recruiting to have been so successful elswhere, but so far back up front is a travesty. The above named teams are LIGHTYEARS ahead of us up front……good luck, backs and QB. Maybe we can stack a few backs in the backfield to block for you. Meanwhile, lets get in some studs……our coaches and skill players will look a little better…
