Mark Richt points out ... well, something in Georgia's victory over Kentucky. (AP photo)
This post is an adjunct to the Georgia-Kentucky game column, which can be found here.
1. Mark Richt looked tired after this one. It was late, and it had been a tough night, but still … the usual Richt bonhomie was missing. He said he was “very excited about the victory” and complimented Kentucky’s coaching and preparation, but after a round of questions bearing a distinctly negative tone he’d had enough. He stopped in mid-answer and said: “Know what? I’m happy with the victory. We’re 6-1. That’s not bad.”
2. Mike Bobo might not be a fan favorite, but he’s the Georgia coordinator having the better year by far. Had the Bulldogs’ offense sputtered here, they’d have lost. But they made no turnovers, which was huge, and Aaron Murray threw for 427 yards and three touchdowns against a Wildcat front that was stacked against the run. Thus did the Bulldogs escape, if only just. “I didn’t see any panic in our guys,” Bobo said. “We told them, ‘You’ve got to be prepared for this (in the SEC).”
3. After seven games, it’s fair to say the defense’s middling numbers aren’t aberrations. No, Jarvis Jones didn’t play, and yes, Abry Jones got hurt in the first quarter, but Georgia yielded 329 yards and 24 points to a Kentucky team that was averaging 215 yards and 9.5 points against SEC opposition. Said Todd Grantham, the defensive coordinator: “We didn’t start like we wanted to start … but guys sucked it up the second half.”

Linebackers- UGA outside of Jarvis Jones hybrid position has shown little- Florida
DB’s – Florida by a large margin
Defensive Game planning- Until someone beats Florida by scoring points- got to be Florida

You fire Richt people are nuts. The man averages a 10-3 record over his 11 1/2 years as UGA’s coach. Not many people do that. WE ARE 6-1 THIS SEASON! Win next week and we can finish the regular season 11-1. Yes. I say fire the coach that can bring my team an 11-1 season and a trip to the SEC Championship…. really?!?!? You people are nuts. He runs the program right, he’s a good man and at the rate he’s going he will bring a championship to the Dawgs sooner than later. When he does I hope he hangs a big middle finger to all you haters. By the way the coach with the most wins in college football had 2 NC in the 39 years he coached…. Its not like they just give the things out… Again you Fire Richt people are nuts!

Crazy things happen ever weekend in college football. I just watch and enjoy. Many say we have no chance. I say,get the Bud cold and wait for the unexpected great game from the Dawgs, that is looooong over due! Being a fan is fun if you don’t take yourself too serious. This time of the year is great, don’t ruin it for youself.

I can’t figure this Dog defense out, I thought they were supposed to be better this year but from what I have seen so far they don’t appear to be near as good, Looks like they are not motivated, Don’t seem to have any fire and Grantham looks the same, I sure hope some changes are made before Sat. in Jax are things could get real ugly real fast, From the way the Gators kicked the Game Cocks around and from the way the Cocks kicked the Dogs around I’m thinking it may be a long day.

12 Years of Donnan (40-19) AND Goff (46-34-1) …. TOTAL: (86-53-1), 0- SEC Championships, 0- Division Titles. ————- 11.5 years of Mark Richt (111–39) 2- SEC Championships, 5- Division Titles and possibly a 6th this season. Do you really want to fire Richt?

I have no doubts that UGA will beat Tech again this year. With that said….
Through 7 games, UGA has given up more rushing yards than Tech, and, Tech’s defense has more INTs than UGA.
Think about that….
And we fired our DC.

Most of his SEC titles came early with Donnan’s recruits and when DiNardo was at LSU and Shula at Bama. He even went 1-2 against Ron Zook…and, of course, we know how hes done against Spurrier and his overall record against ranked opponents..

Richt get fired? Why? SHould Spurrier get fired too? he got his butt-whipped by Florida on the road just like UGA got waxxed by SC on the road in one of the loudest crowds ever in the biggest game in their history and their defense fed off of it and were awesome. SC has men on DL playing against INEXPERIENCED UGA OL….and Richt should get fired? UGA is tied with SC, has a chance to go 13-1 and he should get fired? Dont win the SEC and should get fired? Dont win the NC and should get fired? Let me tell you imbeciles something….if you DONT start winning 10-12 games in most seasons, you arent going to go all the way one season……
FACT 2….it took the ALMIGHTY Lord Saban how many years as a head coach to win a NC? I now you dont know so I wil tell you….11 years…. This is Richts…….12 th year. If it took Lord Sabam 11 years to win one, why dont you shutup. It tiook Bear bryant how many years? 18. it took Dooley how many? 17 or 18. It took Bobby Bowden how many? a lot more than 12.. There have been a couple guys break through early in their careers in the last decade and win one in less than 11 years BUT they were at schools with great tradition and powerhouses and i hate to tell all of you and all you in the media but UGA has NEVER been a powerhouse unless you count 3 years with Herschel Walker 30 years ago….the CLOSEST thing UGA has ever came to being a powerhouse is in the last decade under Mark Richt AND…..IF we EVER get an OL that has played together for a couple years….we might be able to move the ball better against great defenses but OTHERWISE wantign UGA to go undefeated in the SEC is a TALL order. I dont care who is coaching….if you have no OL, you are in trouble just like if you ahve a freshman QB….or no DL, or corners or RB’s UGA has got everything but an OL THIS year and the last 4 actually. AND the defense… I am dumbfounded as to why they are allowing so many td’s and so many yards agaisnt the run….
Bottomline is, UGA has NEVER been a powerhouse in football minus 3 years with Walker….closest thing is where we have been the last decade in this ferocious SEC…Richt has elevated us to a level of consistency NEVER seen by UGA fans and he is ABOUT to take us to the promise land in 2-3 years which would be sooner than most every coach in football history won a NC as a head coach….it took Saban 11 years….Richt is in his 12th without an OL and a defense that is lettign running backs shred them….Richt is not a defensive coach. His OL is inexperienced….havent had running backs since Moreno….give the guy a break
The ONLY way you get rid of Richt at this juncture would be if John Gruden called up and said hed take the job if it came open….if you said UGA ws 6-1 2 years ago you would call that pretty darn good and 1 win away from going to the SEC championship….we will see what goes down next Sat…UGA wins all this is a waste of time and you will be celebrating and calling for a contract extension after beating the #2 team i nthe country…..this time the GAME is not in nearly as hostile of an environment s the SC game….that was crazy. This one is near the GA line in a neutral site….
UGA has many players who this will be the last game against FL…I think they will rise up and win this one. I think they will want it more than FL. I think FL is overrated. Their defense is good and their offense is coming along, BUT our offense is better IF we have a game plan to HELP our young OL such as rollouts, screens, misdirection, QUICK passes and smart runs with A FB……IF the UGA defense finally shows up, UGA wins. If not, its anybody;s game, who makes the least mistakes….

BTW, if you check to see who actually was playing when Richt won early, they were NOT Donnan recruits, very few were….FACT.
i.e David Green, Pollack, I can go on and on and on….a small handful were Donnan’s…FACT. so PLEASE stop coming with that argument….Richt is no Gene Chizik and I bet you are well under 35 yeas old and have not been around long enough to know what you are talking about when it comes to UGA football….RICHT showed you some glimpses of what is possible and when it dont just get better and better every year.
Fire Rich, you guys are idiots…unless John Gruden shows up forget it… Richt has taken uGA to a level of success never before seen at UGA and it takes that foundation to break through and be in the nationa ltitle hunt on a regulat basis….NEWS FLASH….UGA HAS NEVER BEEN A FOOTBALL POWERHOUSE NEVER….UNLESS YOU COUNT 3 YEARS WITH HERSCHEL 30 YEARS AGO!
Took Lord Saban 11 years to win a NC…Richt is in his 12th year with NO OL for the last 4….6-1 after losing to a team in a seriously HOSTILE LOUDEST environment against a DEFENSE FIRED UP by that atmosphere that were MEN, GREAT PLAYERS, playing against inexperienced young OL….SC was FAVORED…..Bobo could have had a better game plan against that DL but they hadnt played that well against ANYONE this year. Not looked that good. They were FIRED up and UGA young OL hadnt experienced no strength and talent like that and SC should have won when all things are considered…..they were favored. HAD UGA weathered the storm in the 1st and had Rambo got that INT instead of the WR takign it from him….crowd mught have been calmed immediately and things went different but oh well…..
Few coaches ever win a NC in their first 15 years…..if they do it is at powerhouses that have a history and recruit well on their own….UGA never even recruited well until Richt got here…not this well. Richt has taken UGA up a level and has been steady except for 2 years and FYI everybody has a couple down years….everybody.
Heres another thing for you to put in your pipe….Bama didnt win their division nor the SEC last year but got a NC shot…..UGA was the best team in the nation a few years ago and everybody knew it. Had 2 earlo losses then went and dominated everybody in their path including Tebow…LSU got the NC shot instead of UGA…LSU wnet on to squeak out the NC and everybody knew that UGA would had toasted LSU….UGA’s team was fairly young and but grew up and was the best team in the nation come mid season on and they didnt get the shot Bama got last year….That was a NC team that HAD their been playoffs like there will be in 2 years….UGA would have been natl champs…dont forget that…beat Hawaii what 55-0 in the sugar bowl or something?
1983-1984-1985-1986-1987-1988-1989-1990-1991-1992-1993-1994-1995-1996-1997-1998-1999-2000-2001…thats 19 years boys….thats how many years i was a UGA fan watching and hoping every year for what Mark Richt brought UGA in 2003. an SEC Championship….inbetween that time, not even a measily SEC East title like you got last year…..19 seasons……since 2002 UGA has won 4 SEC east championships, another SEC title and another year when they didnt win the east, had the best team in the nation…..didnt get the chance bama got last year….Richt has a couple down years (FINALLY) and hasnt won the NC soon enough since then and you want him fired? You are young and ignorant and maybe dumb….
You arent going to win a NC without an OL or DL or Qb andlikely not the SEC even. UGA has played all year with boys on the OL. They are 6-1. The defense has played average. yet they are 6-1. They have an opportunity Sat to go to 7-1 and win the SEC east against the #2 team in the nation and they will NOT be faviered to win, supposed to lose. UGA plays a lot of top 10 opponents and most the time the others have been ranked higher the last 4 years and UGA was supposed to lose. its easier to win when your favored ans supposed to win thatn beign supposed to lose….THIS sat UGA will play the #2 team in the nation on a neutral site. the game will be huge. UGA IS due to win a game like this. Thay have a chanve if the defense plays up to their potential and if the OL learned from SC and if Bobo learned from SC and from watching the SC/FL game last week and against LSU, and will have a great offensive game plan, help the OL against the FL defense. UGA can win if the defense comes to play and there is a great game plan for the offense against that D and to help the OL…..UGA MUST be creative with the run and throw quick passes so Murray isnt in the pcket too long at all, screens, etc.
But wanting richt gone you are absurd unless John Gruden calls. And come this time next Sat and a UGA win against #2 FL, this conversation will be a moot point for the next few years….

Coach Richt will get ths job done…he already has done a better job than any coach in UGA histroy…UGA has NEVER been a powerhouse but Richt has taken us up a level to where we are expcted to be one. He will take the next step. We need AN OL for the last 4 years. We will have one with experience starting next season….it even took the lord saban 11 years to win a NC. Richts 12 th year, give the man a break if it took lord saban 11 years to win a NC. BTW….only a small handful of players had any impact on Richts first SEC championship team….FACT. so stop saying he done it with donnans players as that is simply not true.. david green? pollack? ring bells? i could go on and on and on. i could go on about many things like watching 19 seasons without a crumb from UGA coaches. No championships of any type. not even an eastern divisionj title. maybe 2 10 wins seasons in 19 years. richt has taken uga to the sec championship 4 times….only LSU has been that many over the last 10 years…..few coaches ever win a NC before 15-18 years of coaching unless they are at a powerhouse….took bear bryant 18 years, bowden 19 i thin, dooly 17 or 18. saban 11 years….a few have done it recently if yo uwant to count chizik which we dont. and others but they did it under special circimstances like being at a powerhouse like oklahoma. UGA is not a powerhouse but Richt has raised the bar and might turn us into on the next couple years…now go to be younguns and be happy your last 10 years were 10 x as good as the 19 years prior to 2002…..

Green and Pollick were recruited by Donnan
Donnan and Goff coached when FL and Tenn were the 2 best teams in the SEC and between the 2 of them played for 4 National Titles in the 90’s
Richts tenure has seen a Tenn team almost at the level of Vandy
Richt hasnt won the SEC East outright but has backed his way in everytime due to other teams losing
Richt cant beat good FL teams
10 Win seasons arent that hard since we play an additional cupcake game that Donnan and Goff didnt have
Get your facts straight Saban won a National title in his 8th season as a head coach his 3rd season at a program that is capable of winning a National title by the way

I think they confuse politics with football here in Georgia. Lots of nice guys that go to church in this state. If that is how you pick a coach get in your car and tour any Baptist Church next Sunday. You will find thousands of resumes you can get a ton cheaper than this crowd.
There will come a day when Georgia looses its looks, may already be happening with Fla. coming on strong. They won’t be able to recruit at the drop of a hat anyone they want. There is a window here for their brand, a brand Dooley built and for a while Richt maintained. No wonder Dooley got so hands on as athletic director he could see this day coming. You got a racehorse that won’t race. And it is not the offense this time it is the defense, an average defense with above average talent. They keep sliding and the offense will be affected the same way we see it happening at Tech. Too much pressure, especially in that game coming up, no leadership in the coaches or the players. These guys will be fighting each other on their own sideline next weekend.

UGA has never been a powerhouse more than two or three years in a row and maybe one such run per decade. UGA has never been Alabama or UT and lately Florida and LSU.
We are third or fouth all time in SEC titles and one of the top four or five bowl trip teams and all time bowl game winners.
Folks, 10-2 vs a weak schedule but with possibly nice rival victories over UT, Auburn, GT and a couple of other SEC teams, is as good as it historically gets for UGA.

The adage applies to UGA that teams reflect the personality of the head coach. I watched Dooley-coached teams play out of their minds in some games and worse than fecal material in others. Today, coaches try to keep their teams on a consistent, business-like level. I would describe the UGA football team’s play under CMR as business-lite. They show up for the games, but appear to be less than fully engaged. UGA competed for the SEC title last year and is in a position to do the same this year. The discipline issue us one most teams, except Saban’s, fall short on. Even if UF wins on Sat., if UGA wins out, CMR should not and would not be replaced. The freustratiion in Bulldog Nation is palpable and understandable. If fan sentiment could hire and fire, collegiate athletics would be crazier than it already is.

Richt has to go. Bottom line. It boggles my mind why his supporters are happy that all he does is beat bad teams (barely at times).
The talent on that roster is lead by a man that can only prepeare them to beat Buffalo. When the chips are down. He loses.
He instills in his players that there’s “more than just wins and losses.” He’s “happy” about the loss to USC. He doesn’t have a winning attitude. He doesn’t teach his players that losing is unacceptable. UGA pays the man to win and all he does is find ways to lose. But it’s ok. There’s more than just wins and losses, right?
I say give the man all the time in the world to focus on his preaching. Let him teach the folks about all those things more important than wins and losses. And while he’s doing that, his replacement will be giving the dawgs a much better chance at a national title.

Coach Richt is a great recruiter…which is probably the best single asset to have, especially in a talent-filled state like Georgia…and he is a clean-cut, nice-looking man who says the right things and represents the university very well in the public eye. And after that, the positives are about over. He’s a horrible game coach, and the team never seems prepared to play hard from the very opening kickoff. I hate to admit this, but the production on the field does not come close to what it should, based on the talent that we have on the roster. Richt is more of a George McClellan than a U.S. Grant.

Hard to consider firing a coach that should at worst have 10 wins again, although this is a down year in the second tier of the conference thus far, but the argument that the team is as talented as any in the country and underachieves every game except Vandy, especially defensively precludes some thought as to why the D letdown this year? Synergy from starters out early may be part of that answer, but Kentucky game showed effort was again lackluster with the D line and DBs continue to let WRs beat them deep. To me that`s coaching and players not getting the message when they are coached. O line is inexperienced, no doubt that figures in, but coaches need to scheme around every team they face with movement in pocket, RBs and TEs assisting and rollouts, which Murray does pretty well. Great gameday coaches prepare well for the games and adapt to what`s going on, and this staff seems to have lost the zeal this year. Strong is a good coach with solid SEC experience and Louisville rockin pretty good. What do you think Mark?
