Mark Richt points out ... well, something in Georgia's victory over Kentucky. (AP photo)
This post is an adjunct to the Georgia-Kentucky game column, which can be found here.
1. Mark Richt looked tired after this one. It was late, and it had been a tough night, but still … the usual Richt bonhomie was missing. He said he was “very excited about the victory” and complimented Kentucky’s coaching and preparation, but after a round of questions bearing a distinctly negative tone he’d had enough. He stopped in mid-answer and said: “Know what? I’m happy with the victory. We’re 6-1. That’s not bad.”
2. Mike Bobo might not be a fan favorite, but he’s the Georgia coordinator having the better year by far. Had the Bulldogs’ offense sputtered here, they’d have lost. But they made no turnovers, which was huge, and Aaron Murray threw for 427 yards and three touchdowns against a Wildcat front that was stacked against the run. Thus did the Bulldogs escape, if only just. “I didn’t see any panic in our guys,” Bobo said. “We told them, ‘You’ve got to be prepared for this (in the SEC).”
3. After seven games, it’s fair to say the defense’s middling numbers aren’t aberrations. No, Jarvis Jones didn’t play, and yes, Abry Jones got hurt in the first quarter, but Georgia yielded 329 yards and 24 points to a Kentucky team that was averaging 215 yards and 9.5 points against SEC opposition. Said Todd Grantham, the defensive coordinator: “We didn’t start like we wanted to start … but guys sucked it up the second half.”

For two weeks since the SC game I have said nothing on this blog. Actually had a script ready here after the SC game, and just did not submit it.
Having given this much thought is it possible our players are in over their heads against the better SEC teams. That is what it appears to me. We struggle a great deal against better teams, and repeat this each year. If not this, then are our players not emotionally engaged? Against Vandy they were, and if this is true, then our coaches are not connecting with these players. I believe there is several issues involved here. Words like confidence, swagger, and passion are not part of this team and staff. Most men when it matters, and when their masculine nature is on the line show up. Our leaders are not leading, and not showing the demonstrative traits of a strong in your face leader. We also mirror of leaders, and our leader is our compass. Here we have low confidence, little passion, and for the love of the game we look either out of shape or slow. I cannot imagine how a defense returning so many could be slower than last year, but this is possible if they are out of shape. On top of this we are lossing battles inside on D & O lines. Beard came in at LOT as Gates moved inside to LOG. That change looked good. On the D line our line is slow and not athletic enough to compete with the best in the SEC. As for the Dawgs, they are ranked correctly as the rest of the country is below our conferences fourth through sixth teams. So we are not over rated, but our players know the truth about how good they are, and well they also know what a hill they must climb against the Gators.
I also believe we will show up and make it a good game against Florida. Here their manhood will be called out, as well they already know they can be embrassed.
We are a 10 or 11 win team which is still pretty good in the SEC. Reality is our leadership is good, but not great. We are only say 8 to 10 spots from being the best in the nation each year. One player or two players from being # 1 or #2 in the country, and if that player was on the D Line this whole season would be much different.

10 wins in the ACC gets you a contract for life. At a football school in the SEC year after year, it should get you fired. I would bet my house that if Miles at LSU went 10-2 3 years in a row and second to Bama and ended up in the Capital One Bowl ever year, they would find a new coach.

SKB – are you kidding me? Are you for real? We will fix it next year? What about this year? Almost all of the players on defense were project as high NFL draft picks. Half of them will be gone after this season! What will we use to fix our defense next year? Freshmen? It we cannot do it with seasoned veterans, how will we fix it next year. Marc Richt has been the coach for 12 years. He put more players in the NFL than most SEC or any division 1 coach…yet he continues to do lest with exceptional talent! Mark Richt is a great human being…a great man, but a championship coach he is not! I love the guy but I am not watching these Georgia teams with blinders on! They have under achieved under the guidance of Richt for the past ten seasons.

Family is good….as always. Hope the same for yours.
My doctor will not let me fly or drive long distances anymore……so I am only able to see my Gators in THE SWAMP these days. Must be nice to be able to take in the various venues still. I agree….I would put up Florida’s two lines vs. anyone…..except Bama (although I do think Florida DL is just as good as Bama’s DL). Willson being healthy at LG has made a huge difference this year (except for missing the Vandy game with an eye injury). He was outstanding yesterday. Halapio has been outstanding at the other guard position. Nixon, when healthy, is good, not great. Chaz Green is an outstanding RT. Can’t wait for Humphries to put on about 30 pounds before next year……he is special….and will lock down the LT position for a couple of years and then go start in the NFL. Tyler Moore coming in next year from Nebraska…along with Max Garcia….and the continued development of Jassmen Dunker…..and the Gators will have a very strong OL next year as well. Did you see Bullard and Fowler playing at the opposite ends yesterday…..wow….what a future those two have for the Gators. I hope….Floyd comes back for his senior year…..but I doubt it due to his economic situation and the fact he will be drafted in the first round. Ealey will most likely come back because of his injured knee and being limited this year. Gators need to land another big time DT in the recruiting process.

Do you know anything about the game yesterday. Florida had to only go less than 10 yards to score yesterday in the first half. And Florida’s OL wore down SC yesterday…..and mashed them in the second half…..so much so….that the Clowney looked totally worn down and exhausted when he was not in the game in the second half.

Too much focus on extracurricular activities has to be apart of the problem. We’ve changed defensive coaches more than once. Richt has called the plays, Bobo has called the plays. But the results have been the same under the same head coach. There’s something really missing in this program. Obviously, wins against ranked team has been missing for years. If we don’t win the East this season then it may be time for change. But who are we going to get that assures us that we aren’t set back for years and we have to suffer a rebuild? Look at Tenn as an example of what can happen.

If I were Richt….I would resign and take over the Miami job….and go win a NC down there. He has a better chance with the type of fan support from such Dawg “supporters.” No one will come into Georgia and recruit better than Richt. He just needs to do a better job of hiring a defensive coordinator….the last two have been horrible….as well as an OL coach. Those two are the ones that need to go….in my opinion. Grantham is clueless….it seems to me. And he just got a big raise. By the way…..I watched a Georgia football show today and it showed Bobo in the box going crazy when Georgia made big plays vs. the Vols. They need to put him down on the sidelines during games. He is similar to Muschamp with his emotions during a game.

FACT: The Gators did not make a first down in the game’s first 25 minutes, managed just 29 total yards in the first 30 minutes, yet still held a commanding 21-6 advantage.
FL’s offense didn’t wear down SC. SC buried themselves in a hole and FL D played well keep them in it.
Driskel completed 11 of 16 passes for 93 yards. Mike Gillislee ran 19 times for 37 yards. Reed caught four passes for 44 yards.
Florida’s defense and special teams were much more impressive.
The Gators held South Carolina to 191 yards, including minus-1 in the third quarter. Marcus Lattimore, who didn’t start because of a hip injury, ran just three times for 13 yards. And Florida dominated every aspect of special teams. In addition to the two forced fumbles, Kyle Christy had seven punts of at least 50 yards.

Georgias problem on def is from tackle to tackle-Geathers and Jenkins play way too high and the inside linebackers need to be bigger and heavier in a 3-4 def.I coached 23 years in the highest level of high school and never coached the 3-4 but understand the coorect concept of that particular def.You have to be physical inside the tackle box and Georgia is not physical enough and dont play inspired football. This coaching staff cant make adjustments on the fly which is critical.Inside linebackers dont take on fullbacks or guards and are easily blocked or teams just shield them and seldom do they meet the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage. We look confused and the def line has played awful this year. You build a football team from the football out and our line of scrimmage is not physical on both sides. We look great getting off the bus but it does not translate to the field.I have alot of respect for Mark Richt but these assistants are some of the worst in the country.Garner and Friend are really pathetic.I feel the end of the road is near but might not happen until after 2013.If the same team shows up in Jacksonville that showed up in Lexington it will be the beginning of the end of this coaching staff.

I thought someone with your obvious insights would know this……THE SEC IS NOT HIGH SCHOOL. And I can bet you this……the player will NEVER make that mistake on the football field…AGAIN. And Florida players know they cannot play and make mistakes on the football field…as long as Muchamp is the HC. He has made that clear to every player on the Florida roster….and is the reason why the Florida team makes so few mistakes on Saturdays…mental ones…..these days. The player made a huge mental mistake….and Muschamp does not tolerate that…..in practice or on the sidelines during games. And the player was back in the game playing DL soon after that. He knows Muschamp has his back…….as does every Florida player….but they also know they must limit mistakes and perform at a high level to be out on the field.

All of you whiners do understand your team is ranked in the top 15 in the country and one win away from (probably) clinching the eastern division of the toughest conference in the country. The real problem is most of you don’t understand why Georgia isn’t among the top three football programs in the country. The answer? Because it’s not. Plain and simple, so fire the coach and let’s hire Ray Goof again.

Richt never has and never will understand the importance of building a strong , run blocking O-line, and scrapping his outdated, 90s FSU offense for an I-formation-based power run offense. I hated when UGA hired him because he transformed UGA to FSU offensively speaking. The finesse, pass-first, 1990s FSU football is alive and well in the SEC as long as Richt remains head coach at UGA. You can call it Old man football, Bowdenball, or grown man football, the results will remain the same……….Richt will play down to mediocre competition, narrowly win, and get soundly beaten by run-based, ranked teams. FSU of 20 years past is current day UGA. Richt only cares about getting a mediocre QB an opportunity to dink and dump off short passes to WRs & RBs and have the receiver run for many more yards than the pass itself !! LOL !! 90s FSU wasted so much talent and it’s the same at present day UGA. Richt will run at times but he has the RB to run wide mainly because the O-line can’t run block and can only pass block marginally. That’s why Richt has every RB trained to pass block first rather than do what they do best which is to……….run the damned ball.
You can talk all time coaching wins and percentages all you want but Richt will NEVER be remembered with the all-time greats. Anybody remember John Cooper or Mike Archer ? Only the delusional, apologistic Richtfans will hail him as a good, christian man, and a winning coach. But real UGA fans will remember Richt as a coach who piled up a winning coaching percentage vs. mediocre teams, winning meaningless games he was supposed to win often unimpressively, and never able to win the BIG, meaningful game. Thus he will go down in UGA lore as the coach that built delusional fans up only to consistently let them down. UGa wil get to the next level when the get the next coach that has the correct mentality, because Richt never has and never will have it. We need to spend whatever it takes to buy out current SF Niner coach Jim Harbaugh. Now that’s a damn good POWER ball coach !! Go Dogs !!

Florida played field postion ball in the first half and SC has twice the amount of possession time vs. Florida in the first half due to their turnovers….due to Florida’s aggressive defensive and outstanding special teams tackling. SC was playing 8 and 9 in the box and no one runs on that….and Clowney repeatedly got in on sacks in the first half when Florida tried to pass the ball on third and short. I was at the game and I watched SC’s defense complete wear down in the second half. Clowney was done late in the third quarter and put no pressure on the QB after that….and the other end put no pressure on Florida all day. SC stopped Florida’s running game in the first half by blitzing LBs and DBs on almost every play….and Florida burned them once but the play was called back due to a chop block by a RB on Clowney. And Florida…with a big lead in the first half….just played field position and did not pass the ball. SC could not move the ball on Florida’s D….and Muschamp knew that and refused to go down the field with the ball much. If the game had remained close…I am sure Pease would have gone deep on them a couple of times more. But Pease did come out in the second half with misdirection and confused the hell out of the SC LBs and DBs when they continued to blitz. Muschamp knows what he is doing….and has a great defense to back him up this year.

Florida is one of the most penalized teams in the NCAA, got to take advantage of over-agreessiveness, look for a lot ofsnap count variations, some movement on d-line re snap, and then look for some double moves, their db’s bite on the short balls.
This could be a rout, look for UGA to get out to a big lead early, by forcing turnovers, and penalties to stop drives, and buring Florida on some deep passes.
We’ll see how Florida’s offense plays, when down by 21 points int eh 2nd half, anyone say pass interceptions go 3 for UGA/??

Win it and we can build on the momentum and control our own destiny. However, please stop with the Kirby Smart talk! He happens to work for one of the most astute defensive coaches in the game. There is a reason that Kirby has interviewed for a half dozen head coaching jobs and is still an assistant. Hire him and we are going to be in the same boat for years to come. If we do need to make a change, hire someone winning with less talent, even if it is a smaller school. We need leadership here, not a scheme change.
