Brian VanGorder (right) watches his career path take a discernible downturn. (AP photo)
Even as Auburn was en route to the BCS title, there was something unreal about the journey. Not that the 2010 Tigers weren’t the nation’s best team. But you wondered how they got that way.
This is a reference to Cam Newton, but not in the way you’d think. Nearly two years after it was reported that Newton’s dad had sought $180,000 to send his son to Mississippi State, we await the first bit of evidence that Auburn paid, or even offered, anything beyond a scholarship. The NCAA investigated at length and found nothing untoward. So far as can be discerned, Auburn won with Newton fair and square. That said …
Newton blew across the Plains in the time it takes to change, er, planes at Hartsfield-Jackson. (OK, slight exaggeration. But only slight.) He arrived from Blinn Junior College in January 2010, took his team to 14-0 the next January and, Heisman Trophy in tow, was gone. He was an Auburn student-athlete for roughly a year.
Auburn began its championship run ranked 22nd in the Associated Press preseason poll — one spot ahead of Georgia, six spots behind Georgia Tech. The Tigers were 8-5 in the season before Newton, 8-5 in the season after Newton. Today they’re 1-4, the victory coming in overtime against Louisiana-Monroe. They just lost 24-7 at home to an Arkansas team that was outscored by 100 points in its two previous SEC games. Which brings us to the other part of the disconnect.
The 2010 national championship was won by Gene Chizik’s team. Is Gene Chizik a national championship coach?
Counting two seasons at Iowa State, his career record is 36-33. His record without Cam Newton is 22-33. His record before Cam Newton was 13-24. His record since Cam Newton is 9-9.
A BCS title should buy a coach a long honeymoon, but let’s remember that Chizik works at Auburn. Where Terry Bowden resigned under pressure 11 months after he’d led the Tigers to the SEC championship game. Where school officials were moved to take a clandestine flight to Sellersburg, Ind., to woo Bobby Petrino, then of Louisville, to fill the head-coaching position occupied by Tommy Tuberville. Where Tuberville himself was gone four years after an undefeated season.
Things happen faster in the win-or-else SEC, and Auburn occupies the epicenter of Football Gone Wild. The Georgia-Georgia Tech relationship has been described as clean, old-fashioned hate. There’s nothing clean or old-fashioned about the feelings Auburn and Alabama have toward one another. Theirs is the dirtiest form of loathing, updated daily.
Alabama again reigns over college football. It has won two of the past three BCS titles and is in Position A to claim yet another. For one year, Newton and Chizik and Auburn usurped Nick Saban’s throne, but that year seems now — heck, it seemed so even then — as the one-off to end all one-offs.
So today we ask: Could the coach who claimed a national championship in January 2011 get fired before 2012 is done? Anywhere else, you’d say no. Auburn, however, is not anywhere else, and this is among the worst Auburn teams ever. It ranks 113th among 120 FBS teams in total offense, 117th in scoring, 110th in passing efficiency, 75th in total defense and dead last in turnover margin. This with a new offensive coordinator (the overmatched Scott Loeffler) and a new defensive coordinator (Brian VanGorder, of whom you’ve heard).
According to Rivals.com, Auburn’s signing classes from 2010 through 2012 ranked fourth, seventh and 10th nationally. Continuity, alas, has gone missing. Nick Fairley, who won the 2010 Lombardi Trophy, arrived as a JUCO transfer and left for the NFL after two seasons. Running back Michael Dyer was the offensive MVP of the BCS title game and was kicked off the squad 361 days later. Auburn has begun each of Chizik’s four seasons with a different quarterback; the latest, sophomore Kiehl Frazier, has thrown eight interceptions against two touchdown passes.
The Tigers’ next two games are at Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. (They’re a six-point underdog against the Rebels.) If Auburn loses both, it could well finish 0-8 in SEC play — two years after going 8-0. The SEC has seen all manner of strangeness, but such a plunge would have no precedent. Then again, Auburn’s rise to No. 1 didn’t have many antecedents, either. Yes, Herschel Walker lifted Georgia from 6-5 to an unbeaten national championship in his first collegiate season, but he stuck around a couple of more years and the Bulldogs stayed really good. And nobody wondered if Vince Dooley, who’d won three SEC titles before Herschel, could actually coach.
The former Auburn coach Pat Dye, who seldom makes a lick of sense, recently claimed he wouldn’t trade Chizik “for 10 Sabans.” If Chizik keeps losing, Auburn might soon swap him for one Bobby Petrino.

So, if things happen so quickly in the SEC and results are demanded – WHY IS RICHT STILL AT GEORGIA? Mark, it is time for another tough look at RICHT’s record over the last few years – let’s take an honest look and see after his teams not winning against ANYONE of worth over the past few years (since the BAMA blackout game) if he deserves to remain the UGA head coach. I would say that he has peaked and the program has peaked and the coaching staff has no real answers for the future. What say you? Please write a column soon on this! I appreicate your work and thoughts on this!

What’s weird about Chizik’s national championship at Auburn is he did it without building a program. They were lucky enough to keep winning the first half of that season and became a great team by the end of the season. But it’s rare to see a whole team carried by a handful of star players for such a short period like that.

I can totally see Auburn being desperate enough to hire Petrino; if anything the Hawgs epic collapse has further cemented his rep as an offensive genius. That being said although Petrino will trumpet his new found love of Jesus and do all the right things that play well in church known as southern football, he will still be one of biggest sacks of excrement to ever walk the sidelines and Auburn will find the same karmic reward that awaits all teams who make a deal with him.

You have to have a QB to win. Frazier was signed to run Malzhan’s offense. They signed Pike because of the changing offensive system but he was an idiot. Van Gorder trying to implement his cover2 will not work if you don’t have the corners who can play bump and run. A bad fit at the moment but will be ok next year.

Its hard to say. What I look at is the fact I see no playmaking ability on the team. We talk a lot on AJC about Tech not having play makers. Well, Auburn looks no better, yet they have been recruiting in the top 10 since Chizik got there. You should at least see the athletic ability on the field, but its not happening even against lower competition. Spurrier used to joke about UGA doing nothing with recruits. Well, that applies to Auburn right now.
Another big deal is the defense. Auburn is used to playing good defense from the Tuberville years. They havent played a lick of defense since Chizik got there. If Fairley couldnt get to the QB, it was going for a big gain. Van Gorder’s unit doesnt look any better so far.

As an Auburn guy I think you are right on about the weirdness of the championship season. A stranger cast of characters has rarely been assembled. Personally I will always be prouder of the Jason Campbell team – he was a class act and we had built a tremendous team around him (Chizik was the DC, btw). That said, the BCS year was a heckuva a bolt of lightning and the comebacks against UGA and especially Bama were all-timers. Auburn earned the trophy, period. As for what to do now: I think Ole Miss and Vandy are must-wins for Chizik and would be for most big-program coaches in the same boat, SEC or not.

Under no circumstances should Auburn hire Bobby Petrino. I realize the SEC fans like to treat CFB like its the NFL, but there’s no reason to sell out your principles to hand Petrino another big stage for his screw ups. Petrino needs to do time cleaning his rep up in Lexington or a smaller school.

If today’s mindset had been in effect in the SEC 40 years ago, Shug Jordan would have been fired at Auburn somewhere between 1966 and 1968, Bear Bryant wouldn’t have lasted past the 1970 season at Alabama, and Vince Dooley, Ray Graves, Charlie McClendon, Johnny Vaught and Doug Dickey all would have had short careers as head coaches. As an Auburn alumnus and longtime season ticket holder, I had no problem with Terry Bowden’s departure because he essentially gave up on his team. Tommy Tuberville should still be the head coach at Auburn and he would be had he not had a momentary lapse in judgement and hired Tony Franklin. I like Gene Chizik but I have no idea why he hired Scott Loeffler or why he keeps Trooper Taylor on the staff. Schools have to become rational and quit firing coaches every time somebody sneezes.

I love college football, but it is becoming more difficult to participate in this madness. If folks want to follow pro football, there’s the NFL, CFL and AFL (arena).
Schools dump the majority of their admission requirements to enable their programs to become great, then wonder why their current/former players, who didn’t earn quality degrees, are on the police blotter.
I’m not naive, just sick of the sewer college football (athletics) currently resides. Guess it’s time to spend time doing something else of Saturdays. After 58 years, I don’t want to be associated with D-I.

Sorry Bullwinkle, But Newton shouldn’t have set foot on a football field after beign arrested for possession of stoeln goods at Florida, three counts of academic chaeting at Florida, and then the Cecil Newton 180k Mississippi St debacle. Auburn did not ‘earn’ anything. By your standard, Georgia should have kept all the players they dismissed and shortened the suspensions of the players who stayed and it would be OK. If Newton is not on the filed you loose 5 games in 2010. Again, he should not have been admitted into school after his history at Florida. Same can be said for that punk QB at LSU.

As far from elite as UGA is right now, I would rather be in our position than Auburn’s. Pretty pathetic attempt. Chizik isn’t going anywhere. If Bradley or any of these so-called “sportswriters” did ANY amount of research before writing whatever comes out of their backsides, he would have noted that the buyout for Chizik is 7.5 million. He would have noted that despite a horrific record this year AU has another (third straight) top 10 ‘cruitin class coming in.
But let’s not let facts get in the way of a good ol’ “Hey look over there!!” hit piece.

Clark Atlanta, Morehouse, Point, Shorter, Valdosta State, West Georgia, Fort Valley State and LaGrange all play every week and Mercer and Reinhardt come on board next year. It’s a whole lot cheaper, no scandals involved, and a lot of fun.

It’s interesting that a coach that managed to build a team good enough to win the first national championship at a school in 50 something years could be ushered out 2 years later as unfit, when in an adjacent state in the same league a coach that had been there for over a decade without ever even playing for a national title seemingly has nothing to worry about.

One thing AU proved to the college football world is if you have at least one very dominent player on Offense and one on defense sourrounded by a fairly gpood supporting cast, get a few breaks, you can win the NC in one season.
Yes, Chizik is on thin ice at AU. I can see AU biting the bullet and hire Bobby Petrino, put him on a short leash, one eff up and he’s gone, just to put W’s on the board. Petrino can do it the scuzz bag that he is. He knows how to make an offense go. Kids will want to play for him and if Bobby puts the W’s on the board all will be forgotten reference his doing it on the back of a bike. The AD will become a hero having the genius to hire Petrino and give the coach a 2d chance. The PR dept will make sure of a positive spin along w/a media that will eat it up. Its all about winning and keeping the $$ rolling into the athletic dept. If not AU, there will be other AD’s willing to sacrifice their rep to ressurect their football program. But not the dawgs, they’d rather lose w/CMR.

Look at what happened when Clemson fired Ford.
Look at what is happening at Tech since they fired Gailey.
Dumb people do not learn from their mistakes.
Average people do learn from their mistakes.
Smart people learn from other people’s mistakes.
We have a great coach at UGA that has won 111 games in 11 & 1/2 years and beat Tech 10 out of 11 times.
Other schools would love to have him. The spoiled children fans of UGA need to get behind Coach Richt or find another school to be a “fan” of. We don’t need them.
And I still can’t decide if the Richt haters are really Tech students and fans posing as UGA fans trying to get rid of him because they can’t beat him. But that is their level of character so it may be the case.

1-AU didn’t fire Tommy. After the Bama beatdown of AU 2008 the woodcutter called Houston Nutt and offerred the job which in fact voided Tommy’s contract. Tommy made them pay him in full and he left town with 6 million and only 1 lose to Nick. Tommy made the right business call in 2008.
2-VanGorder booted out one of Dye’s old assistant coaches from his staff meeting two weeks ago.Brian will not be at auburn in 2013.
3-The old coach, the banker, and the woodcutter still run auburn and do doubt that. The president at auburn and the bot understand their place.

Huh,
I avoid posting on these blogs because of the amount of trash talk an unsubstantiated rumors that get floated. As some on here know I work multiple games throughout the conference in two sports, and several weeks ago I worked a Kentucky game. I have several very close friends at Kentucky and I can say without a doubt that Petrino IS on their list, along with several other candidates. That does not mean he will be hired, but people have to understand the money some in the Wildcat Foundation are willing to spend. That along with the Pitino deal at Louisville, some want to give payback to their in state rivals and hire their former coach.
Hope you all have a great Saturday and good luck to you and your teams. Go SEC!

Beast, I cannot answer the Auburn question, but word out in Knoxville was they hired Dooley for the same reason Alabama hired Shula. Both were dealing with NCAA issues from their previous coaches and they wanted to make sure name recognition would help them in their damage control with the investigators to show they were serious about correcting issues that were front in center. I will add they both had planned on winning with these hires, but as we all know they both have done good jobs of restoring responsiblity in both programs and started them to get back on the right footing with their programs.

Even though they may have paid for it (and are still paying for it) AU has a BCS ring for the thousand of dollars they paid Cecil Newton. UGA has paid Mark Richt nearly $30 million dollars and counting and are still ringless. So Auburn should eat Chizik’s $ 7 million dollar buyout and still come out of a losing situation far better and cheaper than wasteful UGA, who pays their coach millions for cheap wins and blowout losses against ranked opponents !!

This win at all cost attitude has to stop. The SEC is a pressure cooker because of the unrealistic expectations of its fans. If Nick Saban goes 6-6 or 7-5 in the next season because of bad luck and injuries should he be fired? Les Miles was almost fired for winning games too close. He won a freaking National Championship. SEC fans are ignorant rednecks. The loudest fans are the ones that never attended college or probably never graduated high school. Georgia QB Aaron Murray’s house is trashed because he lost a football game. Christ almighty! Murray is great young man and has already graduated! Even GT thinks they are high and mighty. Fire Coach Johnson they say. He is the best coach that GT has had since Bobby Ross and Ross was the only good coach they had since Bobby Dodd in the 60’s. Cam Newton or no Cam Newton, Gene Chizik coached Auburn to a National Championship team. He should at least be able to coach for 3 more years, yeah 3 more years. When I was at UGA in the 70’s Dooley went 5-6 in 77, 7-5 in 78 and 6-5 in 79. Maybe we should have fired him? Wait, we won it all in 1980. Yes we had Herschel, but we went 11-1 in 1983 after Herschel was long gone. Morale to the story, stick with the coach. Chizik will right the ship. However, I hope GT fires coach Paul Johnson because that boy can coach. I would not be surprise if his undersized and slow players beat my Dawgs at the end of the year.

Auburn needs a transfer from Florida that was recruited by UGA as a TE even though he was a QB in HS. Then he needs to steal something and get kicked off the team. After that the recruit’s father/pastor needs to shop him to the highest bidder amongst the SEC (not the Security and Exchange Commission but the professional collegiate football association). Some folks call it the “Special Educational Conference” or the “South Eastern Conference”!

It is strange to me that both coordinators are gone from that national championship team. Roof, by the way is putting out one of his greatest coaching performances of his life at Penn State. I haven’t looked over to the Arkansas State this year, but that Sunbelt Conference may be the greatest triple A conference in the history of college football. I wonder why all that coaching talent left Auburn, for places not so glamorous. There is a story there.
Bobby Petrino doesn’t need to be at Auburn, the board of trustees down there is going to get some coach in trouble, and Auburn is the last place Bobby Petrino needs to be, for both parties sake. I picture Petrino at Tennessee after this year. Dooley cleans the place up but the alumni there are restless, they don’t want a clean program they want what everybody else has in the SEC. Auburn should hire Dykes the guy that took Dooley’s place at La. Tech. Tech is undefeated this year and playing a big boy schedule. They play Texas A&M this weekend. If they beat them and I think they will, Auburn should get the plane out and go visit.

If the BCS Championship Game were an actual football game, instead of what amounts to an exhibition of “football plays”, strung between TV timeouts, the Ducks would have definitely beat Auburn that year. Instead, it came down to a low-scoring match-up, with the winner being decided by who had the ball when the clock ran out. Sure, Auburn had a great team, but they weren’t “the best”; however, they were certainly the luckiest. Even luckier than “The Hat” and LSU typically have been (and their luck seems to be running out).

The question was never… “did Auburn offer to pay Cam?”
The question was – did his father’s documented and acknowledged auctioning of Cam to the highest bidder render Cam Newton ineligible?
The NCAA said “no,” and justified it by claiming there was no evidence suggesting his direct knowledge of the pending transaction. Thus, Auburn was allowed to field a player who was used as collateral for a $180,000 payout in his second collegiate recruiting cycle. While other players’ were / are penalized at other programs for far less.

Auburn sold their collective souls to the devil for their national title via Cam. Most programs get a major bounce for a few years after winning a title. I just don’t think Auburn football is the head of the class after their national title. Look at Bama! Go Dawgs!

I have no clue why people think we should have kept Tubs…UGA fans should just stick to what they know best..coming close to being elite and UGA football…
Tubs was losing the recruiting battle with our friends to the West…a change had to be made b/c tubs didn’t see bama as a threat (dominating several years in a row would do that)…then saban came in…the “tide” shifted..Chiz is a great hire for a short stink..I see him coaching at AU maybe 1-2 more seasons…HE HIRED THOSE COACHES…he kept the crew in tact and even with all the allegations everyone was still a family and supported each other all the way to the BCS..
Mark, this blog is horrible…you take cheap shots just to get blog hits up…UGA lost to USCe…how about you stick to that…

Cam Newton- The entire saga….The NCAA even declared him ineligible for a short short period of time.
Eric Smith beats up fellow student, Eric Smith fails drug test, Eric Smith continues to play, Eric Smith late blatant hit during the BCSCG, Eric Smith beats up girlfriend.
Academic Fraud charges in the Urban Studies program involving 17 football players.
Nick Fairley- Transcripts changed upon signing with Auburn, NCAA clearing house does not clear Fairley, goes to JC, returns to play for one season at Auburn, post playing reports out of Auburn say he never attended classes and should have been ruled ineliglible for bowl game.
Reese Dismukes- Alcohol Suspension
4 players charges with Robbery, 1 convicted, 3 awaiting trials
Mike Dyer several issues with drugs, driving without license.
Mike Dyer supplies gun for Robbery.
Mike Dyer during trial states that synthetic marijuana was rampantly used by Auburn Football players.

Don’t try to rationalize Auburn center Reese Dismukes getting arrested – and suspended – a week before the opener against Clemson as an isolated example of boys being boys.
It’s not.
It’s time to take a hard look at the accumulation of issues involving current, former and future Auburn players this calendar year alone and ask a hard question that everyone from the school president to the athletics director to the head coach himself should be asking.
What kind of football program is Gene Chizik running?
Is it a program whose coaches take too many chances on talent at the expense of character in recruiting to try to keep up with their very successful rivals?
Is it a program whose players keep seeing their teammates get suspended and dismissed for their actions but, for some reason, don’t seem to get the message?
Is it a program, not quite two years removed from a national championship, with serious cracks in its foundation?
Dismukes got arrested at 2:03 a.m. Saturday on a charge of public intoxication. That’s far from a felony, but it’s a problem on a number of levels.
He’s a returning starter. He’s 19 years old, which means, if he’s guilty of that charge, he’s also guilty of underage drinking, perhaps not for the first time. And his arrest is just the latest example of an Auburn football player embarrassing himself, his teammates, his coaches and his program.
It’s not good enough anymore to argue that other schools also recruited the Auburn players that have gotten into trouble. The fact is, these players are getting into trouble while at Auburn, or in one case, on the way there, and it’s happening in numbers too big to ignore. Consider the rest of the lengthening and troubling rap sheet from this year alone:
Starting tailback Mike Dyer, after getting suspended for the Chick-fil-a Bowl for an undisclosed violation of team rules, leaves the program for Arkansas State. He’s later dismissed from that program after a traffic stop in which the arresting officer says he found marijuana and a gun in the car.
Former wide receiver Antonio Goodwin is convicted on a charge of armed robbery and sentenced to 15 years in jail. Three other former players – Mike McNeil, Shaun Kitchens and Dakota Mosley – await trial on charges stemming from that same March, 2011, home invasion.
At Goodwin’s trial, Dyer testifies that the gun used in the robbery was his. Dyer also testifies that, during his two years at Auburn, he “consistently” smoked synthetic marijuana. Another player, DeAngelo Benton, testifies that he has smoked synthetic marijuana while at Auburn.
True freshman quarterback Zeke Pike is arrested on a charge of public intoxication and sent home by Chizik, with no timetable set for a return. Pike decides to transfer to Louisville to play tight end.
Six people are shot, three fatally, at a party just off campus. One of the wounded, Eric Mack, is a current Auburn player. Two of the deceased, Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips, are former Auburn players. At the preliminary hearing, a witness testifies that the trouble started with a verbal disagreement between the alleged killer, Desmonte Leonard, and Benton, who allegedly pointed at Leonard and said, “That boy is going to die tonight.”
Benton, a senior wide receiver, is later suspended indefinitely for an undisclosed violation of a team rule.
Sophomore defensive back Jonathan Rose is sent home and given his release from the football team for undisclosed reasons, though his Leeds High School coach says the reasons have “nothing to do with grades or anything that deals with the police.” Rose transfers to Nebraska.
True freshman tailback Jovon Robinson starts fall camp, then is sidelined when the Memphis City Schools say that a high school guidance counselor altered his transcript. The NCAA deems Robinson a non-qualifier, which forces him to leave Auburn. The NCAA interviews a former high school coach of Robinson’s, as well as his 7-on-7 team coach.
Auburn five-star defensive line commitment Dee Liner gets arrested twice in 10 days in July, once for an altercation with a police officer that had pulled over his mother and the second time for criminal trespassing for jumping a fence at a public pool. In August, Liner is suspended indefinitely by his Muscle Shoals High School team after walking out of practice.
Put it all together, and all the trouble is a disturbing trend.
It’s one thing to lose five games on either side of a national championship season, with another handful of defeats a distinct possibility this season. It’s far more suspect in a head coach’s fourth year on the job to lose player after player to suspension or dismissal.
The disciplinary actions taken by Chizik suggest that the program isn’t out of control. The repeated need for disciplinary action raises the possibility that the program is headed in that direction.

Chizik cheered the cheap shots on. UGA has stability but it’s at a level that’s upper mid-level in the SEC. No matter how good we recruit, that’s where we’ll always end up. As part of a major transition, he has a new OC and DC, and some of the players (quarterback and some other playmakers) we have currently are not a good fit for the change in football philosophy, so this team, at best, looks like a work-in-progress. As was said earlier, Kiel Frazier was recruited by Malzahn to run that style of offense. While a young kid like Frazier is not to blame for all of this team’s woes, he also has not learned well enough the new pro-style offense, and as of last Saturday, was taken out for quarterback #2. I’m still not sure Chizik made good hires with his coordinators (jury is still out, especially on offense), but he has recruited extremely well, and this young team should get better. Next year’s team should show marked improvement and could be the decisive year for Chizik et al.

I would not want the current folks in charge making any such coaching decisions. We are such a dysfunctional “family” with Lauder or other equivalents having the power and essentially letting Pat Dye be the AD. Jacobs is just a puppet and they want puppet coaches as well. Tuberville got tired of dealing with the situation and left and I can’t blame him. The coaching search for Chizk was a circus and no one could believe we hired him. I initially thought he did a good job putting together a staff but that is quickly unraveling. It is getting hard to be a fan and have faith that it will improve.
I agree with the earlier post who was more proud of the ‘04 team than the one that actually won in ‘10.

chizik will not get fired after this year. He will be forced to look hard at his staff and I would not be surprised to see changes although the OC and DC are brand new right? He changed from the spread to pro set and deserves a chance to recruit to that offense. He really doesn’t have a QB built for that on campus.

I’d hate to see Chizik go for two reasons (1) I actually like the guy and (2) it would be really expensive. Still, the question before Auburn is not what has Chiz done for us lately but the trajectory of the program. Everyone knew 2011 would be a down year, and I think a lot were not expecting much from 2012. But 2012 is turning out to be much worse than anyone could have imagined (or hoped for you ‘Bama fans). If you don’t believe he can turn the corner and SOON, why stay on the train?

UGA fans crack me up…Lets see, just the facts:
Since SEC Champ Game is in place:
AU 2 SEC wins, UGA, 2 SEC wins
AU 4 SEC champ games, UGA, 3
Head to head since then, about even. UGA lately better record.
AU 1 NC UGA 0.
AU 3 undefeated seasons, UGA 0
AU is the Clemson?
Clemson is a decent yet over hyped year after year with an in NC in the early 80s and a conf title every now and then, And UGA, is…well pretty identical.

I agree…it’s Karma for the AU football program. I lived in Auburn when Tuberville “resigned” with no pressure from the university. Uh huh….right! Auburn football has no sense of morality or common sense for that matter. It’s 100% about winning – long gone are the days of ‘ just do your best son’. Very, very sad.

Auburn is re-building now – look at their recruiting class coming in. They will be competitive again soon. All SEC teams go through this at one time or another. Having said that, Auburn would have never won a National Championship without Cam Newton and Nick Fairley and a complete melt down by Alabama.

Good point about Dooley. He went 10-1 (won SEC) 8-1-2 (won SEC), 11-1, 10-2 (won SEC), and 10-1-1 in years without Herschel, ranging from 1966 to 1983. His last two seasons were 9-3, kept from back-to-back SEC titles only by Pat Dye’s best Auburn teams.
The guy could coach a little bit, as Spurrier acknowledged not long ago on Sirius Ch. 91.
There’s nothing in Chizik’s record to suggest that he can coach a team to great heights that doesn’t include a rare dominant defensive player (Fairley) and a once-in-a-generation offensive star (Newton). Nothing against the guy, but his one great year has also been his only GOOD year.

Oh, and Dooley’s 1978 “Wonderdogs” team went 9-2-1 when everyone expected us to be awful. Like I said, the guy could coach a bit. And did so in an era when D-1 teams played similar competition week in and week out. No cupcakes outside of weak conference foes like Vandy.

How soon we forget that we turned down by Jimbo Fisher and Will Muschamp during the last search. They were both merely coordinators at the time. We settled (too soon, maybe) on Chizik. It would seem that being the Auburn coach is not as desirable as we think and we are not as likely to make a splash hire as we would like.

And neither of those two coaches has a national championship and it will be a while before either of them plays for one. FSU can’t seem to beat crappy teams like NCState and Muschamp will have his hands full in the SEC.

And yet they still both turned us down. I’m not saying they would have been better, but that most coaches aren’t interested in the job. Mike Leach wanted the job, but AU wouldn’t return the call. That would have been even worse than what we have.
If they do fire Chizik, they better have a top notch guy lined up beforehand.

Chizk is just a product of a really bad hire in Scott Leoffler. That dude is over his head. He had really good hires in Malzahn and Van Gorder, but missed the boat with Leoffler. You guys have no clue. If Chizik would have hired a better offensive coordinator Auburn would be undefeated right now. The talent is there. We just have no offensive identity. Here, in week 5, I have no idea what kind of offense we are suppose to be. Frazier cannot run a pro, never has. If Auburn had a better offensive identity we would have beat Clemson and the whole year would have been different. The kids just don’t care at the moment. I say Chizik stays, keeps Van Gorder, hires new offensive coordinator, and you people will have to eat your words.
And Bradley, shut your hole about Auburn. Everyone knows you dislike them. Auburn has gone undefeated 3 times in the past 19 years. Guess what? No team in American has done that. Don’t act like Cam’s year was just some fluke. Auburn has been a top SEC program the past 30 years. Since the early 80’s, Auburn has had 6 SEC titles, 3 undefeated season,s two heismans, a fantastic bowl record, and a winning head to head records against every team in the conference except Florida. Go play with yourself. If we let Chizik go, you can bet we will aim high this time. How about Tressel or Carroll? Tresell is there and Carroll is doing nothing with the Seahawks.

Who cares if they turned Auburn down. No Chizik, no national title. It’s pretty simple really. Chizik recruited Cam, Dyer, Fairly etc. If Jumbo or Muschamp come to Auburn in 2009 they’d be looking at about the same record as Chizik did. We can play guessing games all day but that won’t change the fact that Auburn HAS a national championship under Gene Chizik.
Deal with it, live with it and move on.

Old Dawg, I couldn’t agree more. College football is no more. Basketball’s the same. Just minor leagues for the NFL and NBA to most players. They have no loyalty to their schools, don’t contribute after they leave. They’re hired guns and we sit in the stands and cheer for them, probably caring about the outcomes much more than they do. Cam Newton was paid. So are most of the other high-profile players. When wealthy men have a real interest in something, and it stokes their egos, they’ll throw money at it……..lots. It’s only getting worse. Kids from single-parent (moms of course) homes with horrible grades taking classroom seats away from actual scholars is sickening. I know student with 4.0 GPA’s who struggle to get into UGA while others with 2.5’s are welcomed with open arms because they can run fast, jump high, or stand 7 ft tall with a 3 ft wingspan and put a ball into a 10ft goal…..duh! I think most fans will get tired of the system before long and college athletics will be forced to be performed by real college student-athletes.

Good job Mark in taking the attention off the REAL story in the Atlanta area. Richt loses ” another” big game! 10, 11, 12? years of same ole, same ole??? I would trade this year in a minute for the 2010 Championship run. Our trip to Glendale and pictures / memories will forever be there for many an AU fan / supporter. Something that UGA as long as Richt is there will NEVER have the opportunity to experience. And this year the Gator Chomp starts back…..
Give it a rest on Auburn. 33 players from 2010 were seniors /. left early for pros. Took a hard hit last year and this year but will be back in the top portion of SEC next year ans youngsters groow up and then on regular basis again in 2014+. My bet is that AU will win ANOHTER NC before UGA gets a a sniff of won….
