@Greg, I couldnt agree with you more. Bobo was a PR disaster subbing for CMR on the call in radio show last night. He obviously didn’t want to be answering questions and his 2 or 3 word responses showed it.

Regurgitated generalizations about Georgia Tech football.
More uninformed criticism about the meaning of “stars” in recruiting (don’t actually look to see what side of the ball our 4-stars are on, btw). More of the same “defense can’t prepare against the TO” when, just like any other college football program, our defense gameplans against a Scout offense running the opposition’s playbook.

There is no question about Tech’s talent. There is little there.
Some Tech people have suggested hiring Kirby Smart. If Tech did not hire Mac McWhorter as their head coach after what he did for them in 2000 because he was a Georgia player and alum, they sure arn’t going to offer the head coaching job to UGA player and alum Kirby Smart.
Turning to a Georgia player and alum to teach them how to win?
Think about how it would look.

Obviously, MB doesn’t actually watch GT football (I have wondered if he ever watches any sports) or is too lazy to try to develop a well thought out opinion. Go back and watch the Clemson game and tell me that GT’s defensive player are not as athletic as other BCS caliber teams. Watch to see if Sammy Watkins runs away from Tech’s DBs (he doesn’t). GT has players that are athletic enough to get the job done; so, why aren’t they??? It has to be coaching. Firing Groh was a step in the right direction.

You still spout the same inane crap to defend CPJ’s Triple-SLOPtion Offense!
Just because GT has a “Scout Team” like everyone else that doesn’t mean our Scout Team is “equal” to everyone else’s Scout Team.
Our Scout Team is made up of players CPJ Recruited for his Triple-SLOPtion Offense, everyone else’s Scout Team is made up of players Recruited for “normal” or close-to-Pro-Style Offenses.
The players on OTHER TEAM’S scout teams that were recruited to play in Pro-Style Offenses can more accurately simulate what the GT Defense will face from more traditional Offenses.
CPJ has NEVER Recruited a QB that can simulate the arm strength that our defense saw from Miami’s Stephen Morris on those deep throws, ergo our Defense didn’t play very well vs. Miami’s deep throws.
Even though they played like crap vs. SCar, UGa has Murray at QB, which Scout Team QB can get our defense ready for the throws he will attempt in game situations?
CPJ doesn’t Recruit TEs, how can our LBs prepare to cover TEs in a GAME when CPJ has NO TEs on scholly.
Teams like UGA, BC, UNC, have TEs that might be playing in the NFL or will at least get a tryout, if we don’t recruit any TEs how can “any ol’ warm body” simulate a future NFL TE for our LBs & Safeties?
You’re simply repeating the talking points from CPJ’s Radio show with Wes and blindly defending CPJ without thinking or using your own logic.

Once upon a time Metteneberger was UGA’s scout team QB, now he STARTS for LSU, do you think that scout teamers like that can get a defense ready to play better than CPJ ’s scout teamers that were Recruited as non-passing, weak-armed, Triple-SLOPtion QBs?

You are right to a certain extent, even though you cannot simulate Oregon perfectly, if you are Auburn during their NC season then you have the Elite Recruits that were Recruited for a Pro-style (or similar) Offense that are Elite level BCS Athletes.
The problem with the Triple-SLOPtion is that the Offensive Recruits that say YES to that Offense out of HS are NOT the Elite Level Recruits and are basically the leftovers from the Major Programs in the BCS conferences.
So when you take those leftovers that got spurned by big-time BCS program that can’t make the Depth Chart at GT on offense, then that makes them DOUBLE-LEFTOVERS and when they get together on a Scout Team they cannot challenge our Defense and so our Defense does NOT see the athleticism that they will see on Saturdays.
This in turns stymies the development of our Defense and when you combine that with the already poor Recruiting by CPJ, PLUS the normal #’s of Recruits that do not pan out out, then what you get is a GT defense in which CAG was made to be the scapegoat for.
BTW, even when Vad Lee was the scout Team QB as a RS, he still could not simulate the arm strength of a Stephen Morris from Miami, that kid has got an eff’n cannon.
Now that Vad is #2 on the depth chart we once again have no one that can simulate what a BCS pass-first QB looks like under game conditions.
That might be part of the reason our DBs always seem to take bad angles, they see one speed & arm strength in practice ,and then they get hit with higher talent level and speed from passing teams in games.

chan gailey avereged 7.3 wins per season in six seasons and got canned, johnson has avereged 7.7 wins in 4.5 seasons, is this what you would call significant improvement?

The question that has to be answered is “Has Paul Johnson elevated this program?” and the answer clearly is no!
He beat UGA the first year and has lost since.
Tech performed better the first couple of years than they have the last couple.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a program going in the right direction.
The recruiting is suffering under Johnson’s watch, and I was no fan of Gailey’s either.
It is apparent there is a fall off in talent on the defensive side of the ball.
I think the TO can be run with who he has, perhaps with an upgrade at the QB position.
I don’t care who they bring in there, or what prior program he is from, as long as he can elevate this program and that starts by recruiting.
Johnson appears to not be capable of any meaningful recruiting on the D-1 level.
Patience is clearly running low with Johnson.

A 6-3 220lb QB with an accurate and very strong arm that is a great deep passer, I’m talking Dan Fouts, Norm Van Brocklin, Troy Aikman, that kind of great deep passer.
They also have fast WRs with great hands that catch everything and run great pass patterns.

I agree with the comment about Mac McWhorter – I liked him and he did a great job. I wish he had been given the opportunity. If he had, we probably would have gotten better coverage in the AJC also.

Remember, Bud Carson did not work out too well for Tech either and then certain alumni tried to smear him, However, he came out way ahead with the steel curtain in Pitt. As long as the alumni have a signaificant voice in choosing coaches, we will never get the best.

Speaking of Alum…with all that big money I keep hearing GT men make it seems a couple of phone calls could have PJ’s contract bought out by lunch. They can do that over at UGA. Is that a myth too? Right up there with GT football academics.

Fact is neither GT or UGA value $$$$ football enough to fix their problem. The AD at GT has a big problem with Paul’s contract that he can’t fix and UGA has the same issue plus the hypocrite president loves Richieboy. You fans will just have to deal with it as best you can because you don’t matter at this point…but you might come 2013 when ticket sales drop as well as contributions.

Bradley is right. It’s a personnel issue, more than a coaching issue.
Said it before, will say it again:
“When the majority of the players you sign in February, only have other offers to Wake Forest, Duke, Vanderbilt and U.Conn—well…. Your program will start to look a lot like Wake, Duke, Vandy and U.Conn.”
As a head coach, you have got to sign TALENT. It doesn’t matter how you do it, even if it means a “flunk-gate” every 10 years or so. But RECRUIT WELL.

Sorry, but athletics are a secondary concern to most Tech Alumni. Most are going to contribute to the school before the football team and really aren’t that concerned with who the coach is.

Hard to believe all these people with Tech in their tag names are really GT fans.
They are begining to sound like UGA fans who expect their team to win every game and a championship every year. Back off boys, its not going to happen with either school especially at GT. We need to either offer positive support or those who will not should find another team to root for.

The firing of Al Groh was a ploy for CPJ to cover his own a$$. I’m so tired of hearing about you can’t have good players that balance the academics at GT. We’ve done it before in the 90’s! (Minus the Bill Lewis Era). We need a quality coach, that can recruit and motivate. Simple!

That was in the 90’s when the SEC wasn’t as dominant. Ever read the recruiting articles lately? You’ll often hear “I want to play in the SEC”/”My dad wants me to play in the SEC”. Having ESPN tout you as “the best conference in the country” over and over and over for the last 10 years has reeped enormous benefits for that conference. Hell, VANDY is recruiting better than half the ACC…freaking Vandy!
Just saying, it was easier in the 90’s…that’s all. That, and UGA had Donnan back then…LOL.

You guys taking recruiting smack act like our recruiting classes were likethose of the high powered sec teams. They weren’t. And Chanwould win off tenutas defense. If Johnson had half the defense we had previously we would not be in current position. The to is fine Pitts pints on three board with no great qb or b back. Imagine when he gets both. I think he had qbs that can do it. Looks like we will find out. It all comes down to the largest boosters if they still love Paul he stays. I want to know what he v can do with those qbs.

The uneducated, ignorant, misinformed stuff that comes of the GT “fans” mouths on these article comment sections is incredible!
I have never seen so many people who most likely have never played a down of football in their lives (especially Mr. Bradley) think they have all the right answers instead of getting behind the team and the coach who just made an incredibly difficult decision during the middle of a season in the hopes of keeping the D from falling off of a cliff….
Paul Johnson is a very good coach who’s only problem is that he gave Groh too much time. Got to love the fact that he had the stones to make the hard choice and he will get things organized so that Tech wins the games it should and even the ones it shouldn’t.

WNE… have you ever played football?? Your comments are so ignorant its mind boggling. You sit here and say we need this and that. What about Oregon?? Do they have an NFL tightend?? They will play Stanford, a pro-set, play action, power running game. Based on your ideas, Oregon has no chance. They shouldn’t even play the game. They have to practice all week agaisnt Chip Kelly’s high tempo spread offense. I guess you could make the same arguement for Urban Meyer. I mean that idiot had Tim Tebow and a bunch of small backs. Now there sits two national championship trophies in Gainesville. That defense though had no chance, I mean they had to practice agaisnt the option all the time and non-pro-set schemes. Its really a head scratcher as to how they accomplished so much.
