A sobering night: Georgia is outclassed and overwhelmed

Columbia, S.C. – Billed as a prove-it game, Georgia can only hope this was instead a case of false advertising. If the nation’s No. 5 team proved anything Saturday night, it’s that it shouldn’t be ranked that high, or perhaps at all.
South Carolina was primed to make a point. It took Georgia, which had averaged 48 points in its first five games, 58 minutes just to score a point here. To say the Bulldogs looked a step slow from the get-go is to suggest that “Ishtar” slightly underperformed at the box office. In the first 10 minutes, Georgia managed to get outclassed across the board — on offense, on defense, even on special teams. Not coincidentally, South Carolina had mustered three touchdowns before the visitors managed their second first down.
In a way, this recalled the infamous first half against Alabama in September 2008, the night the Bulldogs wore their black jerseys and trailed 31-0 at the half. But Alabama hit Georgia with a series of body blows. South Carolina was firing haymakers to the jaw: A 42-yard completion that should have been a Bacarri Rambo interception on the game’s second snap; an interception off a tipped Aaron Murray pass on Georgia’s third snap; two Connor Shaw touchdown passes to unencumbered receivers, and finally an outrageous punt return by Ace Sanders.
All the improvements Georgia has made over the past 13 months — or seemed to have made — were called into question in this wretched first quarter. South Carolina was bigger, faster, stronger, tougher and yes, better-coached. The Gamecocks knew what they wanted to do and did it with gusto. Georgia had no good ideas. South Carolina showed it could run the ball, pass the ball, stop the run and rush the passer. (And, lest we forget, return punts.) The Bulldogs could do none of the above.
Example: On Georgia’s only real threat of the first three quarters, Mark Richt chose to go for the touchdown on fourth-and-goal at the 2. Murray somehow completed a pass for one yard to Rantavious Wooten. “The ball probably should have gone to the [other] side,” said Mike Bobo, the offensive coordinator.
The talent Georgia had displayed against Missouri and Vanderbilt and Tennessee looked rather less impressive this night. Surely some of that had to do with playing on the road, but venue is no excuse for losing 35-7. South Carolina was ready, and that’s a function of coaching. Georgia wasn’t, and that’s a malfunction of same.
Even more distressing was that the big-name Bulldogs — Murray and Jarvis Jones and Rambo and the freshman backs — were rendered pedestrian by comparison. South Carolina’s offensive and defensive fronts exerted their will. The great Marcus Lattimore got all the tough yards. Shaw, who’s from Flowery Branch, made all the tough plays. The Bulldogs acted content to stand back and admire such excellence, and by appearing so passive in such a setting they left themselves open to all the old doubts.
Even in their division-winning season of 2011, the Bulldogs lost to the four best teams they played. This year they’d won five games without meeting anyone of real consequence, and this effort, if that’s the word for it, was so desultory as to make you wonder when, or if, Georgia will ever again beat anybody any good.
Surely they will. They’re too gifted not to break through against somebody. But a game like this made everyone who has attempted to paint these Bulldogs as smarter, tougher, better — and that’s my hand you see raised — feel a fool. When you’re beaten like this, there can be no disclaimers, no qualifiers: This was simply a horrid showing.
Said Richt: “I told the guys, ‘The bad news is that we took a whipping. The good news is that we all took it together … They whipped us pretty good.”
This was worse than the 42-10 loss to LSU in the SEC title game. Georgia wasn’t quite ready for such a game, and the Tigers were too good. But these Bulldogs were older and presumably wiser, and none of that wisdom was brought to bear here. And if Georgia, after all its staff changes and glitzy recruiting, remains incapable of competing on the big stage, whose fault is that?
Todd Grantham’s defense was superb much of last season but seems misdirected now. Bobo’s offense had run up boxcar numbers against lesser lights, but against South Carolina it had but 149 yards through three quarters. And Richt, who’s in charge of this whole operation, used to be able to take teams anywhere and beat anybody. Where did that mojo go?
No, the season isn’t over, and yes, it’s still possible for this team to win the SEC East and play for the conference title. But the season changed Saturday night. Georgia was exposed on national TV as undeserving of its hype, and it can take a program a long time to recover from such an indignity. The Bulldogs’ ceiling got lowered here. When they arrived, we wondered how good they really were. We have a clearer idea now.

Oh wow. Why praise a team when you turn around and bash the team when they are destroyed on national television. The problem is Georgia never had a team in the first place. For all of you Georgia fans that will bash this post look at the results. Florida has played A@M, Volunteers, and Tigers (LSU) and won all three. Enough stated. Problem is wait till UGA has to play Florida. Thats going to hurt.

can we finally say CMR is the most overrated coach in America? As an LSU alum, I’m licking my wounds from yesterday, we had a chance to win the game even with our total ineptitude on offense. The puppies defense has been exposed 2 straight weeks and the old ball coach is right………..every year the Chihuahuas have a top rated recruiting class and every year its “wait until next year” from the fanbase. As the guy said in Robo Cop when Ed 209 went amuck and killed Kenny – “I am very disappointed Dick” I was stuck at lake house with GT fan and it was almost unbearable except for the alcohol.D needed to step up and failed completely. Grantham won’t be asking for a raise – if he does – fire him. On second thought, fire him anyway.
Offense was pathetic. How long does it take coaches to figure out that Cowney is going to destroy us and put tight end over him to help. I think mid way through 3 period was first time we did that. When was the last impact d lineman we have had? – David Pollack – a long time ago. I wrote last week we would see if Richt and company could take us to next level – the answer is painfully obvious.

guess the koolaid pitcher got smashed pretty good last night. let’s see…what problems have never been fixed….offensive line (check) lack of special teams coach (check) and discipline problems with high maintenance defensive back (Rambo) who can never seem to play consistently (check.) anyone should have seen this coming.

Well, I didn’t see wholehearted service last night, bible thumpers. In fact, I ain’t seen whole hearted service from a UGA football team for quite a while. Funny though, IT IS in Tim Tebow’s bible – cause he plays about as wholeheartedly as anybody who has ever put on the uniform.

The problem at georgia is not the players or the coaches. It’s the rabid fan base that posts here. You players and coaches (and recruits) all read this. That’s why your best players are always 3 and out. No body can do well under the microscope!

Good assessment, Mark. I am glad that you painted yourself with your own paint brush. A contrived schedule and a delusional fan base can carry a team only so far. Georgia will lose to Florida and finish the season 10-2. Pay raises for coaches and Richt will move on to “Dream Team III.”

No UGA fan that has followed this team is really surprised, and the sad part is nothing will change anytime soon. It is like being stuck in a terrible marriage each day is a living hell where you hope things will change for the better but never does. I can smell the stench from this game all the way out here in Phoenix. Finally, until there is new leadership this school will never get another dollar from me.

This defeat was clearly on the coaching staff! For a minute I thought Willie Martinez was back coaching the defense – the Dawgs looked confused at best most of the time when SC had the ball.
I clearly do no thing Mike Bozo has had a original thought in his life. Down by 21 and then 28 you can’t adjust your game plan? You want to just keep running the ball straight up the middle against one of the better D’s in the country. On passing plays you can’t get #72 some help blocking? The poor guy was clearly out of his league on this night and needed some help badly. It always seems against the better teams this coaching staff is ill prepared. UGA won it’s first four games of the year just because it had the better athletes on the field, but when all things are equal on the field UGA will end up with one in the L column 9/10 times because of this coaching staff. Adjustments need to be made – starting w/ the O Coordinator!!!

Mark Rich is by all accounts a really nice guy, and he is apparently a pretty good recruiter. But it’s more obvious than ever that the success he has had in his time as UGA’s head coach came only when other teams were having down years. He simply cannot win on the big stage.

Any surprise here? Nope, didn’t think so. After my team’s defense coached by coach Huxtable held you to 7 points in your bowl loss a couple of years ago, Richt (snake oil salesman) promised to get more involved with the offense and design plays. The morning after is just as bad as feared. Time for a decision, Dawgs, continue with mediocre, uninspired, over-hyped football or–move into the big boy world of championship caliber play? We average alumni can’t get it down without the help of the big players–the high rolling alum that call the shots with their checkbooks. Yes, the UGA program makes money for the athletic department but it is contributions from wealthy alumni that determines the future of the program. These folks need to stand up to Greg McGarity and demand a change in the program. Enough of the embarassment and humiliation.

Well it’s two things…We are not getting the right guys in our program or we are not coaching them up…that’s it. I never see South Carolina consistently in the Top 10 in recruiting..so…hmmm…Georgia gets all these Five Star Recruits…I don’t know what happens to them after that…Who said that?

Great game 21-0 first period good thing we not played oregon ducks been 65-7 instead …However aaron Murray said after chokin a bowl game …we are goin win a Natl. championship n SEC title in 2012….well so far fla n S.C. are tied for that east spot….fla will beat Ga at Jacksonville sorry say we loafed yesterday QB not show up the defense went into .what me worry mode ….and richt say we got whipped as bad as a hound dog with a horn toad boot…we just drop from No5 to 15th in top 25 now….S.C. move up 4th now…..Just think if SEC folks been smart and place alabama n auburn in east and Missouri n Texas A&M in west together Then Mr Richt be dead then alabama would whip us every year then……But lucky richt alabama n auburn stayed in west…..and Aaron Murray is no longer in runnin for Heisman trophy now!

I predicted this when Spurrier got to Carolina, that it would be just a matter of time. The Dawgs were crushed by him at Florida, the guy moves on, THUGA fans rejoice, then low and behold…the Evil Genius is closer than ever. I knew once he got in place, got some recruiting going, and had some success that he would be rolling again. He clearly outcoaches Richt…with the budget, resources, and fertile ground that THUGA has, there is absolutely one reason for the flops = Richt. Can you imagine how THUGA would do with Spurrier at the helm?

It was pathetic. SC could have not allowed you morons to score at all. Do not come on here and say how you wanted to play the Oklahoma States and Miamis because you did not. Todd Grantham’s defense was good last year because they didn’t play anybody. ESPN called this undisciplined team an embarrassment. They have been undisciplined for several years, most penalized defense, with its cheap shots, in the SEC.
Who didn’t see this coming? We spent the week running down Spurrier, probably one of the best five college colleges that ever coached the game, instead of talking about the space cadet head coach and his off the leash defensive co, at Georgia. Even here we don’t give the full view of how bad the discipline is at Georgia. And even now, like last year, the better team may still not go to the SEC playoff because this embarrassment has somehow rigged the system. Florida may have thrown a wrench into the creampuff schedule, but my bet is LSU is not that good this year over Florida being that improved. And how could LSU be that good they took a quarterback kicked off this “hole in the wall” gang, a kid too undisciplined for this band of thugs, and now start him as there quarterback.

“Georgia was exposed on national TV as undeserving of its hype” — you’re right. Doesn’t this happen every year? Ithink the fact that Georgia plays in the SEC contributes to being over rated EVERY YEAR. Just like, EVERY YEAR, they play a game that exposes just how over rated they really are.
This game clearly happened on Saturday. They are clearly over rated again. They clearly have no fire — again.
And what happened to the defense? I thought Todd Grantham had a good corps, but when you look at this year as a whole, the defense has really been suspect. They can’t tackle – again.
Pitiful performance, pitiful loss, and miserable team to root for. Just like ALL GEORGIA SPORTS, the Bulldogs are ALMOST elite.

Could not have said it any better. It’s not the losing, it’s the way they are losing. There is not another team in college football who gets so little out of so much talent. What if Mike Leach or Gary Pinkel could trade personnel? Someone PLEASE pick up the phone and call Tommy Tuberville or Charlie Strong before Ga Tech and/or Arkansas does.
