Don't fret, Dog-lovers. ESPN says you've got the edge in coaching. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
There are times when fans of every college team seem to believe ESPN is Out To Get Them. Tennessee backers have long held this to be true, insisting that the Worldwide Leader’s blather was the reason Charles Woodson won the 1997 Heisman Trophy over Peyton Manning. Georgia supporters, still recalling how Kirk Herbstreit dismissed the Bulldogs’ case for inclusion in the 2007 BCS title game, aren’t above such suspicion, either.
Not to rain on anybody’s conspiracy parade, but it could just be that the Worldwide Leader’s problem is that it employs every pundit in the world. When you have so much being said/written by so many different voices/scribes, you’re bound to tick off everybody at some juncture. This weeks offers an schizo case study.
Georgia’s game with South Carolina will be aired by ESPN, which knows no bounds when hyping itself. There has been so much written about the game on ESPN.com — and hey, it’s only Thursday! — as to boggle the mind. Here we cite specifics:
Those were the first two Georgia-based assessments posted on ESPN Insider this week, and they were enough to induce a Red & Black lather. (Speaking figuratively. I’ve never seen lather come in such bold hues.) But wait!
It’s entirely possible that I’ve missed something on ESPN.com this week, but those five entries should suffice. Moral of our story: ESPN is large, and it contains multitudes. And if you happen to hate some point of view the Worldwide Leader espouses, wait 10 minutes and a differing take will rumble past.
Update: On cue, here’s another. In his Man Vs. Machine Upset Picks, Insider Will Harris – I assume he’s the Man in question – has South Carolina winning 28-20. I’m not sure how that’s an upset, seeing as how the Gamecocks opened as a favorite. (Though the betting line has narrowed considerably, which means pro-Georgia money is pouring in.)

ESPN has a lot of employees, a lot of them have opinons that are only mildly based in logic. Many of their employes end up on the street soon after becasue of their own stupidity.
Their content, not so good, their ability to sell advertising, unfreakingbelievable.

Uga Insider, How do you possibly figure LSU. They will most likely not even survive Florida this weekend. UGA will not be playing Bama for the SEC but niether will USC…. Florida gets better everygame and is looking to crush us again in Jville. You heard that here first. Florida kills us in Jacksonville again, but then looses to Bama in Atlanta. The outcome of the UGA – USC will not matter in 4 weeks. Florida runs the table.

The negative analysis of ESPN as not being a top 5 team is accurate. The UGA defense has only come to play in the second half of the Missouri game and against a poor Vanderbuilt team. Unless the defense steps it up against South Carolina they will lose and by a signifant margin.

GT Bob, Has Clemson started scoring yet? Can your score board handle triple digits. Is their anything good you could say about your team. Georgia has talent but lacks depth and preparation for playing the top programs well. 10 & 2 with an outback bowl and many Georgia fans will say the sky is falling and demand Richts head. I won’t be one of them, but let me ask you… What does that make you thnk about Tech. For the Dawgs 10 & 2 and no SEC is pretty close to a disaster. Tech lost to MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE and you are still over here sniping. ESPN only mentions your team in disbelief at this point and you are only five weeks in facing Clemson.

In Georgia Techs case you are simply not rated and an embarrassment to the state of Georgia, the ACC, and all of college football. Though Tech is not flawed. Wow, just who has SC beaten to where we have to play at such a high level to beat them? They have to play their best game of the year to beat us. If we do not turn the ball over or if SC does not create turnovers, this game will not be close. Defensively, make Shaw beat us by loading the box. Anyone afraid of him doing that? Our defense will play better and we clearly have to much offensive firepower for the Gamecocks to shut us down for 4 quarters. They absolutely do not have too much firepower for us. 42-21 would not surprise me.

KC Joyner’s opinion on the game shouldn’t mean anything to anybody. Joyner is an intellectual who disregards what actually happens in the game and makes his opinions and analysis based off stats and metrics. While stats are extremely helpful you can always find some statistical basis to support your opinion rather warranted or not. Joyner is also the guy who has said that all-time greats Champ Bailey and Peyton Manning are overrated. In addition, he has stated that Mike Wallace is better than Calvin Johnson. That’s right he said that. The guy is a joke. Take his opinion with a grain of salt. Any person can manipulate numbers to get them to say what they want.

The whole problem with ESPN is that they have basically hijacked this sport; college football. They pretty much own the right to call kickoff times and their desk jocks pretty much own the BCS rankings by voting on a system based on style points as opposed to wins and losses.
The NCAA, as well as the SEC, have sold their souls to this broadcast demon at the expense of the schools, athletes and the fans. If one needs to ask ‘why’ ESPN is so roundly hated… then someone is being less than honest in that looking to begin with.

The issues of some always trump the bigger issues of others. Some UGA fans always feel like victims, those choose to be victims. But do you know what turns that victim status around? Wins. Yep, Wins puts others on the defensive and elevates a team, a program, players and coaches and they become the big bad team on the block.
Got a feeling the UGA/ USC is going to much like the Romney/ Obama debate. One is going to come out aggressive the other is going to muddle around looking like a deer in headlights looking for answers and a exit.
Playing at home is a big big deal for the USC team, and just have to think that advantage alone with young freshmen on the Bulldog team will lead to missed assignments and errors.

First GTBob, if Ga beats SC on Sat, and that’s a BIG if, it will be something,GT would give up 60 points to either SC or Ga, and both of those two teams second string defenses could shut down tech, so get some perspective.
Speaking of perspective, I see GA and SC fans have lost their minds again, and yes I’m a SC fan by saying that either team will blow the other one out.
I hate to quote facts, but I do beleive that 7 out of the last 8 games between these two teams have been decided by seven points or less.
Why will this year be any different???? It won’t, GA has a great offense, but as good as GA’s offense is, SC’s defense is probably second to only Alabama right now.
Ga has the big names on defense, but all I can say is scoreboard folks, stats don’t lie.
Big names don’t win games, playing well does, and Ga’s defense has looked average at best this year.
Again, look at stats of both defenses, and SC has the CLEAR advantage.
Ga has the advantage on offense, but I won’t say that a team that is averaging over 36 points on offense is something to be taken lightly.
I know GA fans hate SC and Spurrier, and at times I get tired of his antics, but to throw out stupid statements just to put them out there, well don’t we have enough of that with politics this year??
I’ll keep it real and say SC wins another close one 20-17.

Everyone crowning Bama as the de facto National Champions need their heads examined. They haven’t played anyone. Michigan would have trouble with Vandy. Lets see if they can move the ball on a real defense and stop a real offense before we start the repeat chant. EVERY team is flawed. Sometimes the flaws don’t show until some pressure has been exerted against them. It’s called stress testing.
How you handle and correct those flaws is what makes or breaks a team. Tennessee will move the ball on everyone. Question is whether their defense can stop the opponent. The Dawgs are trying to reconfigure their defense mid season. I look for a much stronger showing Saturday.
Give David Pollack a few seasons on the air and he will freely show his Pro UGA bias just as all the other sportscasters there do for their teams.
Dawgs win and it will be by more than a field goal.
PS- You have to admire the gall of the poor garbage can scavengers that come on these boards and try their best to diss the Dawgs. Anyone that loses to MTSU… gets destroyed by MTSU… has no basis to diss anyone other than their own team. Face it Tech sux. Paul Johnson is killing your program. When he gets fired, it will take years to recruit enough talent to make you viable again. I could almost feel sorry for ya’ll but my Red and Black blood will not allow me to commit such an atrocity.

I think the biggest reason UGA fans hate ESPN is for 2007. Then you listen to ESPN jumping on the Bama bandwagon last year when they not only didnt win their division (like UGA in 2007), but they already lost to LSU (unlike UGA in 2007), and their schedule was not as good as Oklahoma St. since they missed playing SC and UGA out of the East (unlike UGA in 2007 who played a tough schedule). Both were considered hot teams no one wanted to play. ESPN dismissed UGA without even a second thought.

2007 is the biggest reason. ESPN dismissing UGA without a second thought, then jumping on Bama’s bandwagon last year. Bama didnt have a division title either, lost to LSU already (unlike UGA in 07), and didnt play all that tough a schedule (only Arkansas and Penn St. past LSU).

Overall, ESPN has a power program bias and always will. They do the same in every sport, its just CFB is the only one where media hype can actually win you a pass into the championship. ESPN is changing their name to NESP, for North East Sports Programming, since the only thing they talk about is anything out of the northeast corner of the country. Possible they talk about something (one time) in Chicago, LA or even Dallas, but quickly move back to the northeast corner for sports before the directors and producers fire them on the spot. There is more coverage on a 2-2 New England team and a 1-3 Jets team than a 4-0 Falcons team.

Ok Bob, I know it is difficult with the whole GT perspective but when a team wins and does NOT loose they tend to get built up. SC has not lost a game in a while. They also got their best player / possibly the best running back in college football back this year. They also have one of the best coaches in football. I am pretty sure that is why people are talking about Carolina and why dog fans a nervous. There are only three teams that have beaten Bama (by all measure the bast team in college football) in the last two years and this is the only one that has not played for a national title. That is always a concern for a scout team, but it is more important to give the starting offensive and defensive units an accurate look at plays and formations that they will be going up against. UGA used scout teams for the Tennessee game. Did those teams even come close to emulating Bray? No, but it was important for the defense to get some kind of look similar to what was ahead.

Kirk Dumbstreak lost any and all respect from me when
he boasted his Ohio State team is the best and should move up while saying Georgia wasn’t worthy and didn’t belong in the game in 2007. He said the same thing about Florida and was very disrespectful toward them while hyping his weak buckeyes again. Florida ended up in the game and beat Ohio State, Goergia did not but would have trounced the overhyped weak buckeyes. Voters who control the BS system conspired to vote Georgia way down as far as 16 on some ballots when they should have moved up from three like Ohio State moved up from two. Lots of politicking late that night reminding everyone that Georgia’s strength of schedule would propel them ahead of the other contenders in the computers so they had to vote Georgia way down on the ballots and did. The BS is a joke and proved it big time in 2007.
Tony Brainfart also lost all respect from me that year when he joined the ESPN eradication of Georgia siding with ESPN’s ridiculous explanation instead of reporting the truth. He sold out his soul and ole Georgia to further his carreer as a national media person. Never cared for him after that.

For all you DAWG LOVERS, again seven of last 8 games have been decided by 7 points or less.
As for SC never beating GA 3 times in a row, well as Lou Burdett said in “Major League”, ” we’ve won two in a row, if we win three in a row, that’s called a winning streak, it has been known to happen.”
And it will Sat, SC in a close one, history WILL BE MADE, it will happen.

@dino, maybe SC is overrated, but so is UGA. When have they beaten anyone ranked? GT in 2010 maybe? Their signature win of 2011?? Again, GT, the only team they beat that won as many as 8 games. Right now, judging by the games played, they are maybe a top 15 team, but #5….gimme a break. They look like Georgia Tech in that they HAVE to keep putting points up because there is no guarantee the lackidasical defense will stop anyone. (UT gained nearly 500 yards, including 200 rushing, and they can’t run a lick against anyone else). Oh yes, and SC has the superior coach, who just loves to beat UGA. I am not a fan of either one, but yeah, Carolina wins for the 3rd year in a row. Then on the 27th, Florida also wins, and then you can book a trip back to Orlando or Tampa.

ESPN has almost as many opinions as these blogs. And some of them are every bit as poorly thought out or pointlessly argumentative or cluelessly partisan. Doesn’t mean they aren’t fun to read and complain about. Me? I’ll take Ga in a close one, FL the same, and have a hunch GT will play Clemson much closer than expected. But then I’m clueless too

georgia is going to win the sec and therefore have there shot at oregon in the bcs championship game; two (2) reasons, the freshman running backs. they have this change of pace in their games that other defenses can’t match game day. hate to admit it because i’m a die hard tar heel, but these guys are good! add to that a good qb, decent receivers and a defense that is just going to get better as the season progresses and that spells trouble for darth vader and his tuscaloosa troopers.

KC Joyner is the “genius–expert” who predicted Murray was the “most overrated player in the NCAA” preseason, to which Murray is now ranked #3 in the NATION in pass efficiency, completing near 68% of his throws, so KC Joyner KNOWS NOTHING about UGA.
If you look at UGA 2012, and compare them to Auburn 2010, you’ll find the offense is scoring a td more per game, and putting up 40 more yards per game, and leading the SEC in rushing, just like the Auburn 2010 did. You’ll also find the UGA defense is is holding teams to LESS points in the 2nd half, and 4th quarter, than Auburn 2010 did.
KC Joyner doesn’t know his SEC history. If he did, he’d remember Auburn beat South Carolina by 40 points in 2010 with a ‘lousy” defense, and poor special teams.

1- Only kicker in nation to hit 2 field goals in 2 tries of 50+ yards.
2- Kicker is #27 in scoring nationally
3- UGA is better on kick and punt return defense than ESPN darling ALABAMA.
4- UGA is ranked #1 in kick return offensive td’s.
5- UGA leads the nation in punt blocks (2).
If KC Joyner said UGA special teams stinks, he’s an incompetant idiot.

Auburn won the National Championship in 2010 by avering 41 points, and 500 yards a game on offense, and holding teams to 4 points in the 4th quarter on defense.
UGA is scoring 48 points per game, and averaging 540 yards per game on offense, and holding teams to 3.8 points in the 4th quarter on defense, and a td PER GAME in the 2nd half.
UGA is VERY SIMILAR to Auburn 2010 National Champions.
In 2011, UGA defense was high on stats, but folded in the 2nd half against Boise, LSU, SC, and Mich St. Richt ordered Grantham to fix that, emphasizing the 2nd half defensive scoring.

When Richt gets 200 yards rushing, he’s 24 wins-1 loss. UGA is averaging 250 yards rushing PER GAME. If Marshall-Gurley-Malcome-Murray run for 200+, UGA wins 24 of 25 times.
Richt is 12-5 against RANKED TEAMS in AWAY games. That’s winning 2 out of 3 games.

Why was Gilmore(who?)hatin on Rambo and Ogletree in their first game back? If it had NOT been their FIRST game back….the game would not have been nearly as close because they had MANY near misses that would have been huge plays and turnovers. That wont be happening when the rust is off. Also…if UGA wins Sat….I want to hear what Joyner and Gimore have to say then. Will UGA still be overrated? Overrated with their offense and the defense not hitting on all cylinders? The UGA defense sucks?…lets see any defense play Tenn with 4 guys just facing their first real tests and 2 their first game. Lets see how MUCH better the UGA offense is with Mitchell giving defenses nightmares and still having to cover the other 3 receivers, tight ends and oh yeah, the running backs! Overrated? Florida is overrated.

Its going to be a long night for Conner Shaw or Lattimore one. We gonna focus on the run or the pass? I will guess the run definitely because they want to control clock and keep our offense off the field. If jarvis has a good game its over. And if Murray dont choke. I dont think he will. I think he will have his best game ever in a BIG game. I look for Shaw to throw crucial picks and the vaunted SC defense to not know what hit them. They are stingy in the red zone? They havent played a team with a winning record….
They havent played nothing like they are about to experience and basically, if UGA does NOT screw up like last year or like the 2nd quarter last WEEK, UGA is going to beat SC by 10 on their field and its going to be AWESOME!
UGA -31 SC- 20 OH YEAH THE UGA DEFENSE HAS ITS COMING OUT PARTY AND SO DOES UGA AS A SERIOUS CONTENDER FOR THE…..NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. @ Mark Bradley. I agree for the most part. I do think ESPN decided to ”keep” Ga out of the MNCG in 2007.
It didn’t matter that Oklahoma was not a Conference Champion, then it did matter that Ga was not, then it didn’t matter that Alabama was not.
It didn’t help that ESPN needed to cover for Kirk Hurbstreat’s botched prediction of the Michigan’s man’s not to be departure.
Either way ESPN stood united, and with one voice when they went against UGA.

While Rod Gilmore demonstrates on TV on a weekly basis that he is not the brightest light on the Christmas tree, his analysis about how Ogeltree and Rambo played poorly against UT is right on. Both frequently took poor angles and ended up taking themselves totally out of the play. Ogeltree was noticeably out of position on running plays up the middle. If they play that poorly against USCe, the Dawgs are in for a long night because no one on the coaching staff seems to be paying attention when players are in a funk.
