Update: Ray Hamilton’s response to Mike Smith’s apology

Falcons coach Mike Smith today expressed remorse for his actions on the sideline near the end of his team’s breathless victory over Carolina on Sunday and said he has apologized to defensive line coach Ray Hamilton.

“It was something that happened in the heat of battle,” Smith said, speaking by phone from team headquarters in Flowery Branch.

Of Hamilton, Smith said: “Ray and I have worked together for 10 years [including five when the two were assistants in Jacksonville]; he’s one of my closest friends in coaching … I apologized to him this morning. I said, ‘I’m very sorry about my action. I’m very sorry about what happened last night.’ ”

Said Hamilton, also via phone: “Mike mentioned it to me this morning. I didn’t even realize anything had happened. I didn’t give it a second thought until somebody called me and asked about it this morning.”

Of Smith’s apology, Hamilton said: “His apology is fine. I’ve been coaching 27 years. On the sideline, all kinds of shoving goes on. You’d be amazed at the stuff that gets said down there. But there’s nothing ever disrespectful. Smitty’s a first-class guy.”

Matt Bryant’s field goal had given the Falcons a 30-28 lead with five seconds remaining, but they still had to defend one last play. After a touchback on the kickoff, Carolina took possession at its 20. Smith saw that the Falcons had only 10 players on the field — he would not identify the missing man — and was less than pleased.

Said Smith: “We were trying to finish the game. We were trying to get the right personnel. We didn’t have the right number of players.”

Fox cameras caught an angry Smith putting both hands on Hamilton’s arm and administering a slight shove. Said Smith: “I was on a tirade — that’s all. I did not push him. I was on a tirade and I threw my hands.”

Thinking quickly, Smith signaled for a timeout before Carolina could snap the ball, knowing full well the Falcons had used their final allotted timeout just after the two-minute warning. He also knew that NFL rules don’t levy a penalty when a team tries to call a timeout it doesn’t have.

The Falcons were able to send an 11th defender into the game while the officials were telling Smith he couldn’t have a timeout, which was his intention all along. “I was trying to get 11 guys on the field,” he said. “We didn’t have 11 guys.”

Mission accomplished. John Abraham sacked Cam Newton on the final play and the Falcons left with one of their most stirring victories in Smith’s four-plus seasons as head coach. In Smith’s mind, however, his tactical coup did not excuse the anger he expressed toward Hamilton.

“Sideline etiquette is important,” Smith said. “I’ve got to be 100 percent. I wasn’t 100 percent.”

For the record, Smith’s 2012 team holds a winning percentage of 1.000. The Falcons are 4-0. And with Sunday’s victory, Smith (47-21) passed Leeman Bennett (46-41) as the second-winningest coach in franchise history. Dan Reeves (49-59-1) ranks first.

I am glad, both for the apology and for his getting caught up in the heat of the moment. Shows Smitty is human and cares greatly about the team’s success. He appropriately apologized. Let’s move on the RG III and Washington…

It’s football, a man’s game. Tempers flare, heads butt. Guys get slapped around a little. Mike “Hit Somebody In The Mouth” Singletary, Mike Ditka, Vince Lombardi — these guys were tough coaches. It’s football, boys. Grow a pair.

This should be a non-issue.

There ought to be a penalty for calling timeouts you don’t have. Delay of Game… Illegal Procedure. Something.

Defending with only 10 men could have made a big difference. Smitty played within the rules… but that doesn’t make what he did right.

This is an issue between Smitty and Hamilton. But isn’t it nice to have a coach that 1 cares so much and 2 is smart enough to basically get an additional time out from the officials???

Good teams win games ugly, this was an ugly win, we’ll take it! The birds never quit, Michael Turner running into the secondary was fun to watch, you could tell the Carolina backs were tired of tackling him! They looked like bugs getting stuck on the front of a Mack truck going down I-75-85. Kroy Beirman was out of control, great shot of him choking out Steve Smith, thought Smith’s eyes were going to pop out!

The fire and passion that Smitty exhibits is the reason the Falcons have been so successful during his tenure. Alot of coaches would have taken it for granted that we had won the game, but he showed why he is the only Falcons coach in history to have two winning seasons in a row.

I believe Vince Dooley once got so excited on the sideline he kicked — inadvertently, let me stipulate — an assistant coach in the head and knocked him out. I want to say it was Charlie Whittemore, but I might be wrong.

This is a sport of strategy because its not a rule i dont see how smith did anything wrong, i think he did the right thing by his team in doing everything he could to put his team in a position to win. As the head couch thats his responsibility and if he hadnt made that move and we all knew he could and they lost because of it, everyone would be complaining because he didnt do everything in his power to get his team the W. nuff said Smith did right by his team and owner. Honestly, it was refreshing to see Smitty and Matt Ryan both get really emotional and worked up towards the end of the game. Sometimes it seems like they’re far too laid back and cool, which makes it all the more frustrating for us fans. Let’s see more aggression & emotion! Although Coach Hamilton is probably hoping not to be on the receiving end next time.

Funny story about Dooley but his was inadvertant. Respect is the currency of all human relationships. This was a violation of that and an apology is warranted. Showing “fire” is good but I have never liked those coaches who berate their assistants publicly. But this is an abberation in context of a critical game situation. So, it was not reallly “personal.” It’s a blip on the radar.

Loved the passion and also Kudo’s to Ray Hamilton for taking it the way he did. He could have escalated it and he did not. I also noticed a player must have said something to Smith or maybe another assistant did because right after the slap or whatever it was Smith did his hands like. Okay…okay…I’m good…

That leads me to Ryan. Grace if you don’t think Matt Ryan wants to win as bad as anybody in the NFL you have not bee paying attention. This guys is passionate as they come he just keeps a lid on it because he plays the toughest position in sports and he needs his wits about him.

That being said, I don’t think Ryan liked Cam doing his little “First down” motions and doing his dances in the endzone. They showed it briefly on Fox that after the game Ryan pointed toward Carolina and said, (lip reading) Get the _ _ _ _ off my field!!”

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that!! Best quote and passion I have seen from a Falcon QB in maybe forever. Especially sweet after he just threw a 65 yard bomb. Can danced, Ryan played to the final whistle.

George for someone who wasn’t there or in on the action you seem to have a lot of anger there yourself. Your profanity and threats of violence (and misspelled words) tell me you get worked up easily. Relax, these men will work it out amongst themselves in private. I will admit that was the most upset I have ever seen him on camera during a game. What he did was inappropriate and he is dealing with it. You can bet he will be under better control in the future. You can also bet his assistant coach will be on top of his business better in the future, too. Peace!

Smitty and the entire team need to sit down in a circle and talk about their feelings and what makes them sad. They then need to draw pitures of flowers and kittens and tape them to the locker rooms walls. Then they need to join hands and sing the entire soundtrack of A SOUND OF MUSIC. Finish it off with a group hug.

Regarding the time out ploy, I cannot blame Smith for using any angle available to help his team but sounds to me like this has revealed a loop-hole that needs to be filled by the rule makers. Knowing there is no rule against it, I wonder why teams that are out of time outs have not tried to deke the defense by having their QB in the shotgun call for a TO while the rest of the team appears to relax then suddenly snap the ball.

When did we become such a nation of candy-asses that we can’t be chewed out by the boss? I understand that the chewing was done in public, but that is the nature of the beast on a nationally televised sports event. I think the assistant coach should apologize to coach Smith for almost making a mistake that could have cost us the game and for not firing him on the spot. It’s not always a good thing to try to hold such passion in and I think it is a good thing that we have a coach with the passion to maintain a winning climate in this City.

HEY Y’ALL :

GREAT GAME TO LEARN FROM. IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE AND WIN, YOU LEARN SO MU H THAN IF YOU LOSE. THE COACHES, THE, PLAYERS, AND THE FANS. WE ARE JUST CONDUCTING AN EXERCISE OF OUR “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”. AND GUESS WHAT? IT’S. FUNCTIONING FINE. THE COACES ARE COMMUNICATING. PLAYERS ARE FIGHTING TOGETHER, AND WE, THE FANS ARE GOING NUTTS OVER OUR FALCONS. MOREOVER, THE MEDIA ARE IN TUNED TO THE BEAT. THERE ARE SONE THINGS, HOWEVER, WE NEED TO TIGHTEN UP ANF “FIX” IN “ONE HEARTBEAT!!

FIRST, WE NEED TO FIX THE PASS PROTECTION AND RUN BLOCKING ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE. IF WE DON’T, THER IS A MACK TRUCK COMING RYANS WAY THAT WILL KNOCK HIM OUT., ESPECIALLY WITH CONFERENCE FOES WHO ARE AWARE OF THESE SAME LINEMEN AND THEIR WEAKNESSES FROM THE LAST 2 YEARS. THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS WE HAVE NOT PROCEEDED TO THE SUPER BOWL. I BELIEVE THE OWNERS AND THE COACHES ARE AWARE THAT IS WHY WE DRAFTED SOME BIG ROOKIES. HOPEFULLY, THEY ARE SMART, ATHLETIC, AND NASTY ENOUGH TO MAKE THE STARTING LINEUP. I BELIEVE A CHANGE NEED. TO OCCUR IF WE ARE GOING TO THE NEXT LEVEL IN PLAYING THE LIKES OF PHYSICAL DEFENSES LIKE THE SUPER BOWL GIANTS, AND EVEN SAN FRANCISCO. WE HAVE TO BECOME CONSISTANT, QUICK AND NASTY ON THAT OFFENSIVE LINE.: SOUTHERN FOOTBALL STYLE.

SECOND, ON DEFENSE, OUR DEFENSIVE FRONT, NEED TO GET NORE PHYSICAL , NASTY, AND DIRTY TO A POINT WHERE THEY ARE SHREDDING THE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN IN FRONT OF THEM AND LIERALLY CRUSHING THE QUATERBACK AND THE RUNBING BACKS. I DO NOT SEE YHE DEFENSIVE KINEMEN DOMINATING GUYS IN FRONT OF THEM ON A CONSISTANT BASIS. WE NEED TO FIX THIS IN ” ONE HEARTBEAT!!”.

FINALLY, ALL IS GOOD WITH THE COACHES, THE TEAM, THE FANS, AND THE MEDIA. WE UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON IN ” ONE HEARTBEAT!!”. WE ARE TOGETHER IN THIS. THIS IS OUR TEAM. THIS IS OUR CITY, THIS IS OUR STATE. WE ARE “ONE HEARTBEAT!!” WE. WILL FIX AND IMPROVE OURSELVES IN “ONE HEARTBEAT!!” NAYSAYERS, I KNOW YOU’RE AFRAID. BE SCARED. BECAUSE WE ARE PERFECT NOW, BUT WE WILL BE IMPROVING IN ” ONE HEARTBEAT!!” AND WE WILL BE COMING TO A CITU NEAR YOU!! THUMP!! CAN YOU HEAR IT???!! THUMP!! IT’S. GETTING LOUDER. THUMP!!THUMP!!……

GO FALCONS!!!!!!

THE “PROCESS” CONTINUES TO THE SUPER BOWL.

SSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH!!!!!

I went back and looked at the “in the heat of battle” episode and to some degree Smith’s assessment of “I was on a tirade and I threw my hands” is correct, however, someone could also say they saw him shove at coach Hamilton. Some might even say in thrusting his hands out at Coach Hamilton that he struck him. What disturbs me is some of the street clothed personnel seem to be laughing at Smith and you can see Arthur is clearly not pleased with the action. We don’t need people on our own sideline laughing at our coach. Once he loses control of the sideline he is toast. If Coach Hamilton was Smith’s wife Smith would be in jail for spousal abuse.

If the Falcons lose yesterday – and they should have – this thing is a much bigger deal. My wife even saw it. In fact, he glared at and exchanged words with A. Blank just before this happened. Smith can minimize it all he wants, but he shoved/hit his assistant, in full view of his boss.

An out of control coach on the sidelines distracts the team – every time. They got away with one yesterday, but the fact is, the team was out of control at a crucial point in the game.

That’s Smith’s fault. It’s Blank’s fault that he (Blank) continues to idiotically show up on the sidelines when he ought to be in the owner’s box.

Falcons- winning while improving some major holes that were open in 2011
Georgia- losing IC was not a bad thing, getting Gurley was a good thing, big games ahead

Smith not only shoved his coach, he laid into him as hard as he could. It took several players and coaches standiing nearby to ensure a brawl didn’t break out. I was in shock…and so were the announcers, watching it. It was a serious instance of inappropriate behavior and Smith is now trying to lie about what he did / didn’t do.

Anyone that is critical of Coach Smith for what happened on the sidelines at the end of the game has never been in a competitive situation in his life. I saw Chuck Noel grab an assistant and spin him around. I saw Tom Landry follow and berate an assistant coach for about 20 yards down the sideline. It happens to everybody if you are in that situation enough times. Bottom line the assistant coach was not doing his job getting the players on the field. Do your job and nothing happens.

The link on ajc.com references Smith’s ‘push’, but the only reference to that word in this blog post is Smith saying “I did not push him.” There’s no description by the writer of what Smith DID, which was (and everyone saw it who was watching that game) PUSH Ray Hamilton. No two ways about it. But instead we have him expressing remorse for “his actions.” How about a little specificity, Mark? It was a push, so let’s not let the coach spin it otherwise, apology notwithstanding.

Until reading this article, I thought it was inadvertently.
When I was living in Macon back in the early eighties, there was an article in the Macon Telegraph about Bo Jackson. This might have been Bo’s jr year. Anyway, the article was about how Bo didn’t want to practice in his earlier years and an assistant told Bo he would kick him in his azz. They said Bo told the coach if he ever raises him foot to kick him, it would be his last time. From that day on, Bo practiced when he wanted to and apparently Pat Dye had no problem with it. Yeah, teenager or not, Bo would not be the guy you would want to kick. After reading that article, I became a huge Bo Jackson fan.

Get 11 buzzards on the field before the next snap. But, Smith chose to cheat. I hope the buzzards go 16-0. It’ll be that much funnier when they lose their first-round playoff game. I was listening on the radio since I had just left the Braves game so I missed the heated exchange but I’m sure it was quickly forgiven and forgotten by both parties.

I foresee the timeout rule changing.

However, playing devils advocate it’s up to the officials to be cognizant and aware of how many timeouts there are.

Don’t award it if it ain’t there. Pretty simple, really.

If a player or coach calls for a TO and isn’t seen by an official then it’s a non-reviewable play. The shoes fit on both feet.

Dogbone… Not sure the defense having only ten players on field is a penalty. However, what’s most important is for the defense to have enough men on the field to properly defend. A lineman, linebacker, safety or cornerback, missing, at the wrong time could be catastrophic. That is, the offense might have a huge advantage.

Smith had a right to be upset since the assistants couldn’t get 11 on the field for the most critical play of the game. The only person who has a right to be upset is Ray Hamilton. If he is not upset, drop it. Honestly, I bet Hamilton knows he screwed up.

Trolls need to go feed somewhere else. The Falcons are winning, get use to it!

Also, Smith didn’t cheat. He knew the rules of the game, end of discussion. If the NFL wants to close the gap fine, do it. This is much better than Jimmy Moran calling the booth on his cell phone to find out what the rules are. Oh and one last thing, it was a push not a hit. Don’t be girlie men!

Thanks for clarifying the little disturbance just before the last play of the game – watching TV, I was totally confused as to what was happening.

I may well be wrong, but a few moments earlier it appeared that Smitty was not at all pleased with Arthur Blank kibitzing or puttering around in front of the bench. Was that or something similar actually the case?

In any case, Blank should keep away from the bench DURING the game. Too bad Norm Van Brocklin is not around to explain such “ettiquite” to him.

Kudos all around to Smitty/Staff & to the fantastic Falcon team effort. Any “fans” who left early got the punishment they deserved – in missing a truly great comeback & a huge victory. A truly massive win!

Choke, you are a total hypocrite. Coach Smith, in a moment of anger, shoved or poked an assistant, a grown man fully capable of defending himself. He didn’t hurt him.

Your idol bludgeoned innocent animals to death for his own sick amusement, a cruel and inhumane act. How can you defend his actions while getting so up in arms over a little shove by one grown man against another.

I expect you to use the “dogs aren’t humans” argument. How pathetic that you are unable to feel any mercy at all towards such a helpless species of creatures.

You”l do or say anything to defend Mike Vick, and you’ll take any cheap shot you can find at the white player who replaced him and the white coaches and management who made the VERY rational and logical decision to release that sick BUM.

Admit it, Choke. The Falcons decision to release your precious Vick was a no-brainer that they HAD to make. It had NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with race.

Game is for 60 minutes, I can understand players celebrating but Coaches are paid to manage a game. Fortunately, we had a head coach that still had his head in the game to realize we were a man short. If that was Hamilton’s reponsibility to make sure that all players were on the field, no apology is needed.

Two things:

One, the telecast crew was TOTALLY USELESS during this episode. They a) had no clue what Smitty was upset about and b) missed the whole “call a timeout I don’t have to buy some time” strategy.

Second, I find it a bit ironic. You Smitty haters claim he is a bully, lost control of the sideline, didn’t have his head in the game, blah, blah, yet he kept his head enough to call the timeout to buy the time to get his player on the field. Sounds pretty smart to me.

One parting shot: I’ll take Ryan over sCam any day. At least played his college ball legitimately.

Smith not only shoved his coach, he laid into him as hard as he could. It took several players and coaches standiing nearby to ensure a brawl didn’t break out.
