3 points regarding the Falcons, who won on a 3-pointer

Michael Turner, again the Burner, on his touchdown jaunt. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Michael Turner, again the Burner, on his touchdown jaunt. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

1. On a day when Carolina’s pressure made it hard to throw, Michael Turner had his biggest game of the season. Roundly castigated after two indifferent games and his subsequent DUI arrest, Turner rushed for 103 yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for 68 yards, 60 of them coming on a dinky screen pass that the Burner turned into something greater. On that burst, he didn’t look old or slow or chubby. He looked pretty much like the Michael Turner of old, which is welcome news for the Falcons.

2. Often great, Roddy White has rarely been greater. Falcons wide receivers caught 10 passes Sunday; White had eight of them, for 169 yards. Three of his receptions either scored points or led to them: The leaping-over-Haruki-Nakamura 49-yard touchdown in the first quarter; the 14-yard slant for a touchdown in the second quarter, and the 59-yard victimization of Nakamura on the first play of the Falcons’ drive to the winning field goal. Oh, yeah: White also had a deft downfield block on Turner’s 60-yard touchdown reception.

3. The defense that shackled Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers could never get a handle on Cam Newton. The Mike Nolan schemes that confounded those two veterans didn’t appear to faze the second-year man from Auburn. The Panthers’ offense was a deft blend of power (199 yards rushing, 86 by Newton) and precision (Newton completed 15 of 25 passes for 215 yards). Opponents are surely realizing that the way to attack the Falcons is to run at them, and the absence of a sustained pass rush continues to be a source of concern. (Though the Falcons did finish with three sacks, their highest total of the season.)

They need Corey Peters back (and healthy) in the middle of that line to shore up the run D, and more snaps for Vance Walker.

When the opposition wants to run it down their throats, Jerry, Edwards, and Biermann either run themselves out of the play or get easily pushed out of the way. Gaping holes when those 3 are on the field.

As a 45 Year old NATIVE ATLANTAN, I would say these Falcons are the real deal.
That said, you have to keep winning to get to the Super Bowl. The last team standing WINS. Yesterday was a big step in the right direction.

I have been hard on Turner the past two years.

I will admit I have been wrong……….IF Turner continues to play/run with the desire and effort he showed yesterday! He played like he did during his first two seasons with Atlanta when he had a chip on his shoulder (because he had been relegated to back-up for four seasons while playing with the SD Chargers).

Matt Ryan earns his very suitable nickname “Matty ICE” once again.

People who hate on Matt Ryan are ignorant, biased and/or have a slanted agenda……period……what is not to like?

Roddy White was the MVP!!!!!! {Honorable mention…….Turner was the MVP going into the fourth quarter}

Loved last night game. THATS wat champs are made of!!!. As far as pass rush we couldnt blitz them to death because Cam feeds off that. Dent still went unnoticed. Daunte is looking better EVERY GAME!!. One more game like that and hell officially b a decent cover corner. Last year I wanted him gone but now he stays forever. If Roddy didn’t come back for that floating butterfly pass the game would have ended in a pick.

Since 2010 Vick and the Eagles lead the entire NFL with 180 passes of 20 yards or more.

Throwing 1 lucky deep ball does not show you can throw it deep on a regular basis.

That ball was up for grabs, Roddy just wanted it more.

Yes, it was a great win. However, if we continue to play like that, we’re in big trouble. Anytime you suffer 7 sacks on your QB, every team in the NFL will be gunning for you. And when Ryan didn’t throw the ball away, taking us out of field goal range in the fourth quarter, you have to question where Ryan’s head was at and has he matured like we all have hoped.

Lots of things to work on after this game. But, 4-0 feels great!

Do us all a favor: LET IT GO. We all loved Michael Vick, Michael Vick is gone. If you are a Falcons fan, you root for the team and whoever the QB is. Matt Ryan had to come into a situation where suckas like you were never gonna give him a chance and he has still done his thing. No one is giving him a crown yet, he still has to give us a playoff W or two, but quit acting like this man hasn’t played ball. “Since 2010 Vick and the Eagles lead the NFL with 180 passes of 20 yards or more…” AND? Ryan critics are so funny, three playoff losses in his first four years. One of the greatest QB of all time never won a Superbowl. Mike Vick has never won a Superbowl, Trent Dillfer has won a Superbowl. By that rational Dilfler was a better quarterback than Dan Marino and Mike Vick. Mark Sanchez has more playoff wins than Matt Ryan, boy I wish Mark Sanchez was on my team. Vick is a convicted dog killer he tortured animals for his own personal pleasure. Matt Ryan gets sacked 7 times yesterday and knock down several more times and won the game. Hate all you want, he has not won anything yet, but he will and when he dose it will be sweet. Of course if he dose then the excuses on how it was not him, it was something or someone else will be the next round of attacks.

Great win today. Absolutely breathtaking. However. the thing that needs to be mentioned is that we should have never been in that situation if not for the horrible result of our first redzone trip. Carolina gave us NUMEROUS chances to score inside the 10 yard line and we whiffed badly, and we had nobody to blame but ourselves. Great teams dont waste that easy a chance in the NFL. I know this was only Matt’s 2 int all season (to go with 11 touchdowns), but it was his worst pass of the year (slightly worse than the int in SD) at a time when a touchdown there would have been huge. So we get down to the 3 yard line, first and goal. First, Turner gets the handoff and cant get into the endzone despite a hole, because he trips on his own man’s legs and falls at the 1 yard line. Next play Jason Snelling leaps and cant get a single yard, because the O-line gets pushed back. However, thankfully Carolina had a substitution/offside infraction, so we repeat 2nd down at the half yard line. Then the worst play call and worst result happened that could have happened. Instead of just pounding it in on 2nd down from the 6 INCH LINE, Mike Smith wants to get cute and Matt Ryan throws what appears to be a TD pass to Gallarda, but the refs said he pushed off. I saw the replays and it seemed like a normal, acceptable pushoff that Tony G gets away with 99 percent of the time, but whatever. Terrible call, and the worst possible result. This pushes the Falcons all the way back to the 10 yard line, 2nd down. Next play Falcons get lucky again, on a personal foul helmet-to-helmet call, that should have been 3rd and goal from the ten. Instead, its first and goal again from the 5 yard line. Ryan throws a low bullet to a streaking Roddy, that should have been caught, but wasnt…so now we have 2nd down at the 5 yard line. Poor O-line protection causes Ryan to be sacked at the 13. Now it is 3rd down and goal at the 13 (remember we had 2nd and goal at the 6 inch line moments ago, and first and goal at the 5 yard line 2 plays ago), and Ryan throws his worst pass of the year right to 43 in between the numbers. It should have never gotten to that point, why were we even facing a 3rd and goal from the 13 yard line, when we had the ball inside the 1 yard line? That was the worst sequence of playcalling, combined with horrible pass protection and poor execution, that I have seen all year from the falcons. Then you add in Carolina’s penalties and the falcons had 7 chances to punch it in inside the redzone, and not only do they not get the touchdown, Ryan’s int meant that we didnt even get a single point off an 70 something yard drive. I hope I never have to see this type of goal-line scenario from the Falcons again this century. However, impressive comeback when they needed it. Roddy gets the gameball, most of Carolina’s attention seemed to be on Julio, the Falcons just have too many weapons…

Choke likes to harp on Matt Ryan’s playoff record so far…but there’s another future Hall of Famer that just fell to these Falcons that did much worse than Matt Ryan in his first three playoff appearances.

Let’s see a comparison, shall we?

Matt Ryan’s first three playoff appearances:
30-24 loss to the Cardinals (who then lost in the Super Bowl)
48-21 loss to the Packers (who then won the Super Bowl)
24-2 loss to the Giants (who then won the Super Bowl)

Peyton Manning’s first three playoff appearances:
19-16 loss to the Titans (who then lost the Super Bowl)
23-17 loss to the Dolphins (who then lost in the Divisional Round)
41-0 loss to the Jets (who then lost in the Divisional Round)

It wasn’t until Manning’s fourth playoff appearance that he notched his first W in the post-season, a 41-10 victory over the Broncos.

kdog is absolutely right! That sequence was BRUTAL. There was our chance to really put the game away and we completely blew it. Speaking of coaching decisions … in 20/20 hindsight, Smitty’s decision to kick a FIELD GOAL with 3 minutes left is seen as “brilliant.” However, with our explosive offense why not take a shot at the end zone! 1 shot, try it … if not, Carolina gets the ball backed up at their own 15 yd line. Why make a chip shot field goal (which could have been botched, who knows) and then risk a KICKOFF to them? What if they had a great return on it? They basically had the first down and the game except for a miracle fumble by Cam. Smitty plays really, really conservative at times … no wonder his assistant coach as well as Mr. Blank blew up at him!!!

Be easy on Choke, he’s trying to make up for other “short” comings in his life. He is a low life who gets a thrill up his leg coming on a board that supports our team and QB. Keep posting Choke I love how easy it is to see you make a fool of yourself. I’m sure your daddy gets up each day and smacks your momma for forgetting to take her pink pill and how much misery he’s been in since.

The Falcons proved that how you finish means more than how you start. I hope they realize that applies to this season, as well.

The path of the righteous fan is beset on all sides by the tyranny of negative bloggers. Blessed is he who shepherds the weak through the valley of darkeness, for he is truly his ticket holder’s keeper, and the winner of lost games. And I will strike down with great vengence and furious anger those who seek to poison and destroy my brothers, and you will know my name is The Burner when I lay my big thighs upon you! What do Falcons do? RISE UP!!!

Coming from a Native Atlantan, I love the Falcons sensationalism even though we know Matty looked average at best in the pocket. Who are these blind bats that are blaming the o-line and saying they looked awesome when Cam basically gave them the game by fumbling and terrible pass coverage (did you see how dazed their safety looked?!?!). Matty better develop better play action, and pocket mobility to pull more defenders in, because there are better teams ahead that are going to expose this team and it’s fair weather fans..I’m no Saints fan either, but they are the best 0-4 team I have EVER seen. Please prepare yourselves Falcons, to rise up!

P.S. I love you
