These are the Blue Raiders. They won. By 21 points. On the road. (AP photo by Rich Addicks)
Were Georgia Tech outrageously lucky, all its fans would be as circumspect as Dave Miller of Atlanta. Miller, a 1977 Tech grad, sat above the South end zone as Middle Tennessee was driving to Points No. 43-49 on Saturday, whereupon he rose without ceremony and moved toward the exit.
“We’re just young,” Miller said. “We had some injuries on defense. And Middle Tennessee is a good team.”
Miller’s summation: “We’ll get better.”
Not 20 feet away, another Tech fan watched the same game end and drew a different conclusion. “This was ugly,” said Jerry Kenney, also of Atlanta. “No pass rush, no tackling. I’m sure Clemson [Tech's next opponent] will be licking its chops.”
Kenney was asked if this had just been a bad day for the home team. “It’s not one bad day,” he said. “It’s two bad days in the week [the first being the overtime loss to Miami], and hope is going out the window.”
Here we offer the boilerplate disclaimer: In sports, things are rarely as bad (or as good, for that matter) as they seem. Indeed, that’s a pet phrase of Paul Johnson’s. That said …
Favored by 27 points, Paul Johnson’s team lost to Middle Tennessee. By 21. At home.
“Probably the worst,” Johnson said, speaking of losses his teams have suffered. But this coach only arrived in December 2007, and this was the worst defeat Georgia Tech has known since Sept. 17, 1983, when Bill Curry’s Jackets lost to Furman 17-14. (Three years later, another Curry team would be tied by the Paladins.)
Yes, Middle Tennessee is a Sun Belt team, and yes, the Sun Belt is an FBS conference. But still: On Aug. 30, the Blue Raiders opened their season by losing at home to McNeese State.
“Embarrassing,” Johnson said. “I don’t think there’s any other way to describe it.”
Chan Gailey’s teams were infamous for alternating stunning victories and stump-the-band losses, but Gailey never lost to Middle Tennessee. (Did lose to Duke, though.) Heck, even Bill Lewis — known around Tech as He Whose Name Must Never Be Mentioned — never lost one like this. (Did lose to Duke, though.)
It would have been bad enough to lose to Middle by a point on a 65-yard field goal that glanced off a pigeon and bounced through the uprights. But Tech lost to Middle on a day when it led the 27-point underdog for all of five minutes, nine seconds. A week after yielding 42 points and 609 yards to Miami, the Jackets were gashed for 49 and 510 by the Blue Raiders.
Said Johnson: “As bad a game tackling as I’ve ever seen.”
Said linebacker Quayshawn Nealy: “In the first half we missed 25 tackles.”
Johnson again: “It was like we were running in mud.”
Tech has played five games, losing three. It already has lost twice at home, marking the first time the Jackets have lost on consecutive weekends at historic Grant Field/Bobby Dodd Stadium since 1988, which was Bobby Ross’ second season. And now we have to ask What This All Means for this abashed coach and this humbled program.
Check the schedule, and you’ll see more than a handful of winnable games remaining. But Miami looked winnable, and Middle Tennessee was deemed a given. By losing both, Tech has fallen to 2-3 with games at Clemson and Georgia to come. By losing both and looking helpless on defense, it makes us wonder if Tech has either the scheme or the personnel necessary to prosper in the ACC, a conference it ruled not so long ago.
Will defensive coordinator Al Groh be in place tomorrow? (For this game, he was moved upstairs to the press box, and those 49 points and 510 yards suggest that perspective isn’t the issue.) Middle’s first five touchdown drives spanned 75, 78, 88, 68 and 75 yards, and here we have to pause to ponder the first part of the sentence.
Middle’s first five touchdown drives. The first five of seven. On the road. On a day when it was a four-touchdown underdog. Against an opponent from a Big Six conference that has graced a bowl for 16 seasons running and was the ACC champ (since vacated) in 2009.
Whatever was working for this program works no longer. Johnson’s prized offense can’t score enough to override his defense, which looked stout at Virginia Tech on Labor Day night but has fallen to pieces. And the excuse made after the Miami game — that Georgia Tech was two plays from being 4-0 — no longer holds currency. There are no excuses when you lose by 21 points at home to Middle Tennessee.
Said Jerry Kenney, the Tech fan: “There was a basketball player named Micheal Ray Richardson, and he once said, ‘The ship be sinking.’ ” He nodded toward the field.

This really is a disgrace for Tech fans…..think the writing is on the wall….6-7, 6-0 then collapse….this loss….. PJ has made his bed with Groh and Washington……
For all defending Washington, he makes horrible decisions when the game is on the line. Has for most of 3 years. Washington is to PJ as Ball was to Gailey. …..

Mark, Spot on, again.
You know, as fans I think Tech fans are pretty patient. We understand it takes a while to build your team, get your system in, recruit your players, install your culture, etc. We know it would be tough to be a perennial top 10 program, it’s just not the kind of school we are but a consistent top 20-25 is the level we should demand! We do want a passionate, fundamentally sound team that plays tough, smart football, win some, lose some but improve, make changes, pay attention, get better.
This feels like we’re repeating the same mistakes year after year. (Kansas 2010, hello?) Utah last year, mediocre recruiting classes (even though the ratings don’t matter), really bad defense – I mean really bad year after year, listless play…it’s so discouraging.
I have faith but now it’s that there will be big changes for next year!
This is year 5 and this is the result? We have lost patience, it’s time to get better or get out man. That’s the bottom line.

Don’t hire a coach that is owed millions by a college willing to pay him that much to go away.
It’s a red flag.
But just on principle, don’t do it.
The system is nuts when the coach can tear up the contract when he wants to leave for more money but can demand the full amount be paid him when he is fired.
If he can tear it up, contracts need to be written where the AD can tear it up when he gets fired.
Why wouldn’t Al give his Alma Matre a break?
3 years to install his system gave both him and CPJ a ready made excuse.

The thing is….I’m just disgusted. This team is the result of PJ”s recruiting and Groh’s defensive strategy. Think those who said PJ won with Chan’s players are being proved correct. This program is beyond free fall at this point. One can only imagine if Groh didn’t blitz at Va Tech on the last play before the tying FG what would have happened to the season.
But unlike the first 2 years, the luck isn’t on Tech’s side. Groh is obviously not very good here. Tech needs to plan ahead and go with Lee at QB.Washington can’t deliver in the clutch. 7 points in the 2nd half says it all.PJ has to know all of this.

I admit I was not on-board for the CPJ hire so this is not new for me but why the absolute failure on offense and defense? Middle Tenn. State does know how to play football but this is one of thoese games that should hav been winable. I guess this is like what Arkansas is going through (thankfully CPJ is no Coach Smith) but the downward spiral is noticable, even to those outside the program.
We have seen how CPJ recruits (not well) and it is fair to ask what can he do when he gets his kids instead of Gailey’s. Well now we know. His one dimensional offense is better suited for high schools and lower tiered schools, not an ACC school tat hopes to be in the top 1/4th of a weak league.
Oh Well, there is always next year.

past time for heads to roll. unfortunately it will cost tech much money to do so. we haven’t had a defensive coordinator since paul johnson took control at tech. we run an offense that is only capable of beating vastly inferior opponents. all of our opponents beat us when they stack the line of scrimmage and we don’t throw enough to have any confidence or success at it. we can win 5 to 7 games per year with this type offense and a good defense— 3 to 4 games with this offense and poor defense. when we play teams that as good or better than us we have little chance of success as run the ball 3 times and punt doesn’t bode well. sigh. will have to listen to the woof, woof, woofs again.

ok, first groh then cpj.
i held my breath long enough, it is done.
i had my apprehensions when chan was fired essentially thinking the tech men behind it had delusions of grandeur. their grandeur was that of 1952. i sat on the sidelines with my grandfather at the 46 yd line 6 rows up from 56 to 65 just off the old cinder track. was taught football by the tech track great buddy fowlkes before he became a politician so i go back a ways. tech has always been good at 6-4 to 7-3 with a sporadic year greater than that during that time. they seemed to forget that is tech and should be the expectations and graceful enough to praise it when it happens. they didnt and this is what they have gotten.
so be it. they denounced former ad who was right on. that wasnt complacency but a reasonable bar if the program is run honestly which it wasnt. they forgot chan had to coach em up to get past that penalty with fewer pieces than his lying predecessor or hand the reins off to the guy that followed who reaped the rewards of his hard work at recruiting skill players.

@ George.Defense is the main culprit,of course……BUT,.the offense couldn’t sustain a drive to finish off Miami. Washington isn’t awful…but he wants to do too much by himself. On the 4th down in the OT, you had 2 OL’s expecting a pitch to the B-back.Washington had a TD if he pitched like the play was supposed to be executed. You don’t have 3 men running away from the line on such a crucial play if the QB didn’t make a choice to be a hero instead of executing the called play.
He didn’t rally the team in the 2nd half against a team that LOST to McNeese St.. Nice kid, no doubt. Has proven time after time last 3 years( save Clemson game) that he doesn’t have what it takes to lead in this offense. Please…that Duke win was a game that shouldn’t have gone down to the wire.Tech has to go with Lee…..and Days.He isn’t Reggie Ball…but he isn’t a kid that should be the starting QB. Vad is the QB of the future.
Tevin deserves better than these OT losses.
The coaches have demoralized first the defense and now the offense too.
Groh is the opposite of Tenuta.
Sometimes we wondered if he blitzed too much.
With Groh, he clearly does not blitz enough.
But if I am wrong and it is the player’s fault, who bears the responsibility for recruiting them?

I have never understood coaches who come in (Al Groh to Tech) and implements a system that does not match the players. We have tried to play a 3-4 with a squad full of 4-3 players. You just don’t get enough of the 3-4 type players to Tech and Groh has been too stubborn to adjust. He should never have been hired in the first place, but now PJ has kept him a season too long. We could switch to a 4-3 tomorrow and play better than this.

The team was totally inept and lifeless today. That is a coaching problem, both on defense and offense. It’s not looking good on the flats. GT could realistically run the table from here and out and have no wins. Even Duke and UNC have chances against Tech. Let along what Clemson and UGA are going to do with us in their home stadiums. Here is the inside scoop: D-Rad is in trouble. Bud Peterson already dislikes him because he got us on probation. He was lucky to keep his job after the NCAA ruling came down. Removing D-Rad sends a clear signal to CPJ: When your $12mm buyout is reduced to $4mm (two years from now), you are gone.
Al Groh will be lucky to survive the season, but the problem is that there is no viable alternative to coordinate. CPJ will have his wings seriously clipped next year… the plan is already in motion. Trust me.

I really don’t know what to say. This is the worst game I have seen Tech play since 1964. This is truly a embarrassing moment. You can say fire Big Al, you can fire CPJ, but really is this going to help. Look at our team, the players themselves are playing like a bunch of high schoolers….. I think you could have the best coaches in the world and it would not help this team. Washington for example is playing his worst he has ever played. The defense looks like they have just quit playing. I think they are revolting against Big Al, I would too. But Tech needs to get their heads back on or it is going to be the worst season we have had in many years. The players should have as much love and respect for the school as the fans, all 20,000 of us, but they don’t. I stopped buying season tickets in 2010. Here’s the deal. I’m a long standing Tech fan — graduate and season ticket holder for 30 plus years. And will always support the Jackets. But…… a lot of folks aren’t like me me. Tech — as in Radakovich and others have got to realize if they don’t make changes — starting with getting rid of Groh — they will start losing their fan base and big time alumni support. That in college football these days is serious business. When the players do not want to play for the coaching staff — and ours don’t — you cannot win. I’m sure Tech had better athletes than MTSU but they were out coached and MTSU had more desire and deserved to win. Those qualities can beat talent in college football. Radakovich needs to quit worrying about how nice he might look in a suit and tie and take care of business. Al Groh has got to go!

I think it’s fairly simple. We don’t have the talent to win while playing like “girlie men”. If they don’t have their heads in the game they will have their a** handed to them like they did today. It seems PJ thinks he can win with mediocre talent because his offense doesn’t need superstars. He might win more than he should with lesser talent because of the scheme, but he will never win big. Superior talent wins. You will NEVER win big without a great defense! Ask coach Saban. PJ doesn’t seem to care much about the defense. Until he changes that, we can expect the same lack luster results.

This was an awful game on both sides of the ball. The offense did almost nothing in the second half. One TD against MTSU is inexcusable. This is a team Tech has scored 40+ pts against two years running. The defense is definitely awful right now, but the offense wasnt very good either.

@Stein – thats against UT with Bray, Hunter and Patterson. They wiped out NC St. week one. UGA did look sloppy with turnovers early when they could have shut the door, but lets be real. If Tech played that “sloppy” today, they would have flipped the score on MTSU and won by 3 TDs.

agree with Burdell about the need for a great defense. I’ve been following Tech long enough to remember when Bud Carson was our head coach. We may have gone 4-6 or worse but nobody embarrassed us like today. We were always in the game. We are clueless on defense and that is in the final analysis what wins football games.

Tackling is — dropping to the ground, flying through the air, or playing bumper cars.
Running up the middle is — a brick wall
Option sweep is — always covered by at least 5 defenders
Passing is — rarely used, leaving opponent defenses to think only about the run
Coaching is — unbearably predictable and cringingly arrogant
Receivers are — non-existent
The team appears — disconnected and possibly mutinous
The fans are — totally ticked and are, once again, in Hewitt-mode
Fortunately, football is — JUST A GAME..

The players have quit on the coaches, that’s evident. Not saying they don’t need to be quit on after the way this team has been prepared. The questions now are how soon does Groh get shown the door and how quickly does Johnson follow him? Will enough vacant seats get the message across to DRad or will his buyout be to sizeable to send CPJ packing? Tech football is in a world of hurt. It will be really interesting to see if DRad has the answers or whether he is another over paid CEO.

It’s ok to lose when you just don’t have the athletes that can measure up to your opponents. It’s a different story altogether when you lose because you don’t have heart, or you quit, or you don’t play smart. Look at UGA. Of course they have better athletes, but even when they lose, they never quit.

This takes me back to 2002 when, watching from UGA’s student section in my white and gold, witnessed Ricardo Wimbush and the entire tech defense give up against Georgia and lose that game 51-7. People say “Don’t blame the offense, it’s the defense” and I say that is part of the story. It’s the lackluster play by our senior quarterback who can’t seem to get a yard when it matters only 1 out of 10 times and then puts our defense back on the field. And CPJ is too stubborn to do anything about it, after all, he’s a genius and will call plays to the quarterbacks strengths and away from his weakness… right. CPJ has a few plays called “dead duck pass for interception” that seem to work every time. And another thing, we’re like most teams who can afford to redshirt our 4 star talent, I mean it’s best to sit our defensive freshman talent and let them learn ALL the facets of the game (like losing) before they take the field… we don’t need them, particularly this Kallon kid who can only rush the quarterback and Gamble who is likewise a stud. They can use their redshirt year and learn to lose like the rest of the team right now. CPJ and Groh are such geniuses ….

This “ship be sinking” the day Giff Smith, former recruiting coordinator left to coach with Chan Gailey in Buffalo (ironically, another ship that will sink). PJ and Groh do not possess the personalities to recruit. I don’t think Gailey was particulary grand at it either, but he had Smith. It should be no surprise that we lose to MTSU when we compete with them in recruiting—instead of Clemson or UGA. I bought seasons tix because of the Johnson hiring. But, I think the last two weeks proved this experiment has failed. Ultimately, Johnson needs to coach for an underdog, a midmajor Div. 1 team, maybe one of MTSU’s rivals.

I don’t see PJ gone this year, but I would imagine that it would be soon. I think a total analysis is that while we don’t expect to be in the top 10 every year, there is a expectation of being competitive, and that includes being able to beat UGA two or three times a decade. We need solid football fundamentals, that can play the speed and pro sets. Young coaches that will be here and have energy levels. DRad is all about money, he is not about winning. Which we do need money but his skill sets don’t meet the real needs of GT. We also need to avoid the Curry/Rodgers/Lewis eras.

Groh is not the problem. CPJ and his ridiculous offense is the problem.
People forget, a defense has to practice against an offense that simulates its opponents. Defending PJ’s offense all week is not getting them ready for the next opponent. Plus they are overmatched because the real blue chips do not want to come here and practice against those cut blocks all week. Neither do the blue chip offensive guys that might have NFL aspirations. If he could get Gailey’s players here, yes he might start winning again.

I am about as regular to the games as I can be. However, what I do see a lot of is over reliance on some super old folks coming to the game. They aren’t going to be around much longer. GT needs to develop an expanded fan base ASAP. This requires winning, an attractive game day experience (get rid of the rentacops) and culinary fare. Also beef up the cell and wi-fi in the stadium and no more Blue Hose, MTSU, Jacksonville State games. Auburn, Georgia Southern, Georgia State and former SEC foes.. Then remodel rest of stadium as the east side. But winning is everything.

Been a Tech fan ever since I went to my first game in 1960, and have seen alot of bad times on the flats, along with some good but this is a total indictment and embrasment on CPJ. It is his fifth year and “his” program and it boild down to this. He can’t recruit them or coach them or maybe both. I quess the uga fans are right (almost threw up in my mouth) CPJ did great with Gailey’s recruits but has been going down since 2010 and has not beaten a really good team in how long now. Don’t tell me about Clemson last year as Clemson showed what they really were losing what 4 of there last 5, not to down Clemson. No this is on CPJ…he hired the D-coordinator amd all these coaches. Looks like the smug smart azz offensive genius is in over his head to me and has lost this team already just as he lost the 2010 team after alot of Chan’s recruits left. This is not a endorsement of Chan in any way, just pointing out that CPJ except for one season is not really any better and maybe he should go back to division 2 or whatever they call it now where he can win and be a wise azz all he wants. His act here is beginning to really wear thin.

Pretty simple:
1) Your defense during weekly practice doesn’t face a pro-style offense so it isn’t ready to face the competition you meet.
2) Your scout team cannot imitate pro-style offenses GT defenses face on Saturday’s by a long shot..
3) Paul Johnson doesn’t recruit the kind of defensive line,an you find in the top 20 programs (Gailey did).
4) Johnson won big at Ga Southern but often had to put up 50 to win. He didn’t spend much time recruiting the D side then either.
5) Thus, 1 -4, you are struggling.

i dont know why you tech fans are saying you EXPECT and DESERVE a better team. the most embarrasing thing about the game wasnt on the field, it was your half empty stadium. if you want your team to be passionate and fired up you have to give them a great atmosphere and a loyal fanbase. there is a reason that tech plays better on the road.

The UNC chancellor announced yesterday (I read it on ESPN or si.com, can’t remember which) that are going to make big changes to the academic practices and requirements for athletes next year. The details will be given next spring, but they are increasing the minimum GPA for recruits to 2.3, getting rid of the athlete-only classes, and the professors will determine who is in their classes. Also, he said that they currently have 53 special qualifiers, and that they are going to curtail that practice drastically.

Who do all you experts think would be a better coach? Our recruiting classes have more talent than in the last 20 years except maybe 2. (Dwyer, Johnson etc…). Whose coming here with the challenges of GPA, SAT/ACT, Small Degree programs etc…. The offense has scores more than enough points to win win every ball game. Somehow we have to get the “D” to play with the confidence we saw againist VT and Virginia and of course Presb.. Not sure why the guys are playing for CAG??? I know CPJ is ultimately responsible!! I’ve been watching football long enough to know that these boys quit on their coaches. There are reasons we may never hear for this but the fact remains. Great teams have great head coaches. It’s a known fact that PJ is not a pleasant person (not able to be more specific and still get this posted) and as previously stated Groh must go with PJ a year or two behind him. I feel sorry for Vad Lee and Justin Thomas. PJ, get a recruiter in there and start throwing the ball like teams these days do. Duh! Besides the fact that Al Grogh hates GaTech and wants to see it lose every game (an old Virginia thing) and teaches flag football arm tackling to the defensive backs, and beside the fact that MTS has more scholarships to give than GaTech, it was an even game EXCEPT for the 12th “man.” Not the home crowd, but the home grass. The GaTech running backs and receivers had 4 unassisted tackles by blades of grass that reached up and drug them down without even the need of arm tackling. If the boys can work on chewing gum and walking at the same time this week, then they might be able to hold a football and run next week. Just a maybe, mind you. Maybe a big one.

CPJ is 1-4 vs. Virginia Tech, 1-4 vs. Miami with 4 straight losses. 1-3 vs. Georgia with a terrific ass beating coming up in November to drop to 1-4, 0-4 in bowl games.
After an amazing 19-4 start with Gailey’s players, CPJ is 17-17 since and 4-8 in the last 12.

This Tech team quit in the fourth quarter. That’s right. Q-U-I-T! And they sure as blazes flat out quit on that last MTSU drive. I watched the game up close and personal and I closely watched the play of the middle of Tech’s defense for much of the second half. Absolutely embarassing. Tech’s #90 went half-speed much of the time and took himself out of the play time and time again as he came off the ball in slow motion and carried himself out of the running lane in a clearly half-hearted effort as if he was in a half-speed practice. Time and time again! And he was not alone is his pathetic effort. Not by a longshot!
Most of his teammates were not much better. These so-called major college players were out-muscled and run over by a bunch lower rung FBS players. Huge, gaping holes were quickly opened and # 2 was made to look like the reincarnation of Herschel. But give the kid credit—and to all of the Blue Raiders for that matter—because they played extremely hard, while Tech’s players went through the motions and were an embarassment to themselves and certainly to their supporters. Did you hear the boos?
There was absolutely no excuse for what occurred on Grant Field—sorry, at Bobby Dodd Stadium. To get upset by a less talented, albeit inspired team is one thing. But to get crushed and humiliated is quite another!
I have chastised Dawg fans for ranting about Richt in recent years—and as I write this I feel as if I am being eerily similar to their members of their Lunatic Fringe. But yet, with the exception of Central Florida— one of the stronger lower D1 programs— they have not been humiliated like Tech was by MTSU.
My first Tech game was as a 13-year old in 1962 when Tech upset #1 ranked Alabama/Bear Bryant/Joe Namath 7-6 on Grant Field. That was 50-years ago. The Lord willing I will still be a Tech fan another 20-30 years, long, long, long after Paul Johnson and Al Groh are gone and are only single lines of agate type in the Tech media guide. But I will hopefully never see an embarassing, humiliating debacle like I witnessed Saturday afternoon. Give an uninspired effort like I saw against MTSU against Clemson and it will make this loss look like a nail-biter. And as for the Dawgs, Lord have mercy!
And as for Radakovich’s postgame comments. What a total dumb-ass thing to say. I would have settled for a “no comment” to that garbage. That is his insight into this travesty? You gotta be kidding.
In closing, to Paul Johnson et al, all of you owe Georgia Tech the Institute and all Yellow Jacket fans a public apology for your pathetic effort.
BTW, just watched the clip of CPJ’s press conference. Have never seen the man so humbled and so, well, for the lack of a better word, “un-smug.” No, smart-a comments or sarcasm. Very quiet. Yep, very humbled. Maybe he has finally realized —in what he seemed to say was his “worst defeat” in his coaching career—that it maybe takes more than “smarts” and a “unique” offense
to really coach up a team.

And, I’m sorry to see the state of affairs in the GT program. A once fine program which brought credit to the state, GT probably couldn’t beat either Ga. Southern or Navy now. I don’t know why.
As a Georgia fan, I think it the obligation of GT to at least field a team which won’t cause UGA to sink in the rankings when we beat you by 75 points in November.

Mark,
Everyone in the English speaking world knew that Paul Johnson would blame the defense. That is what Head Coaches do when they are too stubborn to see his players have quit on him and his system is not working, and his players are no longer buying into the program he is selling.
I do think his job is in major trouble and the support for Coach Johnson is now at the level of athletic boosters wanting him out.

JP you are stupid!!!! This offense doesn’t work at this level! It may have the first season but teams are getting it. They’re prepared for it. If they’re not prepared for it, it’s because for some stupid reason they can’t figure out it’s one dimensional. It’s option! It’s assignment football! MTSU of all teams figured it out and DESTROYED Tech….once teams get off assignment football Tech starts gaining massive yardage. PJ’s “I’ve got it all in my head” bull crap has to go!! I’m not sure you understand football. MTSU scored 49 pts against GT’s DEFENSE not its “high school offense”
400+ yards and 28 pts is enough offense to win many games. But accompanied by a D that gives up 500+ yards and 49 pts it makes it tough to win.

Defense wins championships so let’s start with Groh’s scheme. Tech cannot recruit the right players to run a 3-4. To run a 3-4 you need 4-6 280 to 320 pound down lineman. Grantham can recruit that athlete @ UGA — not even possible @ GT. Also the purpose of those down lineman are to be double teamed and keep the lineman off the linebackers — if the three down lineman fail to hold the o line, it is all over. MTSU’s lineman were all over the linebackers. Additionally, it looked like the lineman play the C gap alot — if the nose guard is contained by the center and the guard, the tackle simple turns the down lineman in the c gap outward, the full back hits the hole and takes the line backer and the running back is in the secondary. MTSU ran that all day. Finally, the slants that both Miami and MTSU threw consistantly occurred because the line backers had the fill the gaps in the d line thus taking them out of that zone that the route is run. Guys, it all starts with that line of scrimmage and our athletes can not run the 3-4. We must have 4 down lineman since we can’t get the athlete to play three dwon lineman. Sorry Al – you either adjust or you gotta go!!

This is easy: triple option…really? Who wants to come here and not play a pro style offense? Recruiting takes a serious hit for years, credit Paul Johnson. No more Chan Gailey players here anymore.
3-4 defense? …really? Haven’t got the athletes not the size to run it. Need a big plug in the middle, ain’t there. Al Groh? Never had a winning team…see NY Jets.
Finally, zero team heart…the coach has to instill fight, but can’t strap on the helmet…a sickening display of gutless performance.
Like Clint Eastwood said, “If he’s not getting the job done, it’s time for him to go!”

“Fun on the Flats?” Really? I’ve been a fan of Paul Johnson since his days at Georgia Southern. Perfect fit for the Naval Academy, but I wondered if his system was gonna work at a legit D I school. After 2009, I think everyone had the answer: SURE! What hasn’t happened, apparently, is the continuous influx of legit D I talent. I don’t know if its the system CPJ runs that turns kids off, or if its the ACC’s tarnished rep, or if kids look at Tech’s still somewhat limited curricular options (not being critical – hard to argue with Tech’s mission), or what, but Tech simply hasn’t been able to get the kids Chan Gailey used to get. As a UGA alum, of course I’m enjoying Tech’s troubles, but as a life long Tech fan (not so much after I enrolled at UGA, but still a fan) it bothers me. Worst defense I’ve seen in a long time at GT. The scheme doesn’t fit the personel and the personel would fit on your average FCS team. Worst of all, there is no heart and no intensity. I have, for the most part, defended CPJ from detractors. After yesterday, there is no defense (no pun intended). I don’t think Tech can afford to fire CPJ. Therefore, he will have to make some major changes and Groh will have to go. Yesterday was inexcusable. Yes Mark, this had the look and feel of the Bill Lewis days.
My advice to CPJ. ….. you’d better get focused on recruiting FBS players and playing defense. All of your focus has been on proving the naysayers wrong about your offense. Lose the pompous attitude, get your a$$ in gear, and remember where you came from. If not, you’ll be back there soon.

Yesterday was just a poor effort by the players.
The real problem is obvious….quality of the athletes….not coaching. GT cannot compete with the lesser academic institutions like UGA, Alabama, UF, etc…for quality recruits. This really has nothing to do with the Triple Option. Until the NCAA modifies its requirements or GT changes its curriculum, GT will continue to lose to the better athletic teams.

We have truly witnessed one of the mysteries of modern college football. It would be up there with App. State, Michigan only that was a contest this was a 12 year old boy knocking out the Heavyweight Champion of the World in the first minute of the fight.
Maybe Al is just too old; he looked almost senile sitting up in that box. I notice the Tennessee defensive co last night on the sideline of the Georgia game, cussing in pure madness, charging players and coaches when they put 9 men on the field and had to call a time out. Tennessee has a horrible defense too, but they are improving, they have ambition, I think old Al is just looking for a place to lie down. Even that, I can’t imagine any man alive that could coach a division one team to tackle that poorly, some coaching from high school or just being better athletics would have to fall into this mix somewhere. To be that bad must have taken a Herculean effort. And these are better athletics the theory last week that we are not recruiting is out the window. This was Al Groh being schooled at some advanced age by an inferior team that had an extra week. A week off not to watch Paul Johnson’s offense or special teams but to lick their chops at the banana republic defense that surrendered after the first play. Curry can retire in peace his unforgiveable loss to Furman has not been whipped from memory by this odor.

GT, You do have a point. Most successful college DC’s are more than a little spirited. I don’t doubt that Groh’s knows his stuff. But if you can’t get the players motivated it won’t get done. As a Tech fan, I hate to use this analogy, but compare Groh’s demeanor to Todd Grantham’s. Think about Erk Russell or Mickey Andrews in their prime. I hate to be age biased, but it’s hard to motivate kids between swigs of Metamucil. If you ain’t got the energy, go swing a golf club or wet a hook and talk about your career with your old coaching buddies. There’s nothing wrong with that.

A dead man could coach this defense better. I mean it had to take some input to be this bad. If eleven men had gone out on that field without a coach, these eleven that were despite all descriptions still better recruits than Middle Tenn. gets, would have had better results. We have witnessed a freak show, a world wide mystery. No matter how bad Tech ever gets we will be able to say we were there September 2012 when we witnessed the epic depression of the program. Bill Curry may be the only Tech man happy to see this, he now is a forgotten man, even he couldn’t have topped this one.

Why would anybody anywhere who gives a flip about Georgia Tech football not admit that the program is in serious trouble? If CPJ is such a great coach (as many would have us believe) then how did a fifth year coach with all the players being ones he recruited loose like he did yesterday? If the players aren’t responding to him or his coaches (as seems to be the consensus of those that saw the game) then DRad needs to get off his haunch and figure out why? Certainly CPJ or CAG can’t and won’t figure it out or it wouldn’t have happened in the first place. And another thing… hopefully the next head coach will at least understand a little something about Tech tradition and quit messing with the uniforms. What’s with that anyway?

You can’t recruit with an offense that hurts your pro prospects, and D-1 players ALL think they are going pro. What chance does the D have when all they see in practice is wishbone quarterbacks and receivers? Linemen that cut block instead of pass block? It doesn’t matter who coaches the D, it is Johnsons system that is killing it all. CPJ is loyal first to his option system and second to Tech.

Sitting at the game yesterday and watching the debacle, I noticed how vanilla Groh’s defense is. The team stood like wooden Indians before every play and then we rarely blitzed or changed up defensive coverages. Contrast that with our offense with its motion and many options after the play starts. The Falcons defense has less talent than the offense, just like the Jackets. But the defense won the game against the Broncos a couple of weeks ago by disguising what was to come by bouncing in and out and standing up and disguising coverages. Fun for the players and fans. CPJ’s offensive philosophy gets points–just need the ability to switch into a spread option with our talented backs out as receivers when we need to play catch-up or the option is being stuffed. The Jackets need to apply that same mindset to defense.

I don’t see many excuses on here. A few but not many. What you see is venting. Venting and speculation as to what the problem is and how to fix it. I think the overwhelming majority of Tech fans are pretty much in agreement that the Jackets suck bad right now.
I don’t think Tech can budget the firing of Johnson. Financial reality is just that. But I’m not looking at the numbers DRad has at his disposal.
In my years of playing and watching football, I have come to realize one thing. BEWARE of coaches who are married to a system. I’ve seen it do too much damage to a number of programs on all levels. I will say I was a staunch supporter of the CPJ hire. I have had second thoughts long before yesterday. This offense is a beauty to watch when it is clicking. But at what cost ?

We need to put Vlad Lee in for a full game to see if he can spark something on the offense, there is just no spark with Washington, never has never will be. Give the D more rest and it might actually help them, its shown in previous games. I don’t know why people think Tech can be a big recruiting powerhouse, they really have never been. When you look at schools like Georgia, recruits will go there just for football, can you really say that about Tech, or is it more about the education. The team just needs some good momentum to survive the rest of the season

I’m no Al Groh apologist. I think we all know what we get when we hire a recently FIRED coach. But, Groh cant call blitzes when that leaves his undermanned DB’s man to man. Sweeting has been burned 3x minimum every game we have played. He was the victim on the tying drive in the VT game. He was eaten alive on all the deep plays by Miami, and we saw what happened yesterday. I think Groh would be more aggressive if he had a better defensive backfield. But that comes with recruiting, which we dont do. Listen to CPJ speak at his weekly news conference…..its like going to an all nite dentist.

The triple option is outdated. GT and Ga Southern are the only two teams I know of who run it. GT is unable to recruit the top tier skilled positions players; i.e., QB, WR, RB, etc., because the triple option doesn’t help those with aspirations of playing at the next level. Any team with a good defense is going to shut it down. You live with the run and you die with the run. You only have to look at GA Southern in the playoffs last year against North Dakota State. North Dakota State had a great defense and completely shut down GA Southern’s triple option. Its an outdated offense and the only way of get rid of it……is can CPJ.

Dawg fan but kid at Tech. Defense a problem, but think about their ability to prepare for opposing offenses. Tech D practices against triple option type team or scout team. So they don’t see the types of plays other teams use with as much frequency or with starting caliber players. This happens for weeks and months of practices/season. It has to put your defense at a disadvantage compared to schools that practice against one of the more prevalent offensive schemes. I really think this hurts Tech. Not saying that the DC is great, but think any DC will face the same challenge. Think about it. Opposing teams generally fare well when extra time to prepare for triple option because the defenses have time to practice against an atypical offense like triple option. Tech’s D doesn’t really get to practice against a more common offense…just against a triple option that they are unlikely to face regularly in games.

When you lose to a team that lost to McNeese State and you are Ga Tech, that’s when the Tech coach should be on the verge of getting fired, along with the staff he hired. Radikovich still has confidence in CPJ, and he needs to be fired also. The Tech Athletic Assn, can fire Radikovich. That org is composed of profs, coaches of other sports such as basketball and baseball, and the Prez of Tech, and maybe the Dean of Students and the Prez of the Alum Assn.

CPJ kept trying the trip opt off when it was clear MT would shut it down. He passed from there, and MT was already in the backfield around TW by that time. Finally he switched to the pistol, but TW allowed himself to get tackled, I think. He is a good peripheral vision scrambler, and he could have avoided sacks. A wildcat formation would have provided a blocker on both sides of TW to avoid sacks.

It was disgraceful…the lack of effort was abysmal. Still, the key problem is the lack of talent. Groh may be an issue, but no coach is going to look that good without good players, and Tech doesn’t have enough of those. Johnson has been a pretty good coach, but he seems to be losing this team. They seemed to quit yesterday. It’s clear now that Va. Tech and Virginia aren’t very good offensively. Teams have found something in Tech’s defense and are exploing it. And it’s not going to get any better with Clemson on Saturday. I’m afraid that could be very, very ugly.

It’s simple folks, it really is. CPJ was never any good as a coach. He won a little bit with other people’s players and a offense that noone runs, so he was able to sneak up on some teams (UGA included). But now that all of Gailey’s players are gone, and people know what’s coming, well, this is just the start of the ugly losses at Tech.
Hint for the people at Tech, when you go around thinking you’re smarter than everyone else, you’re usually not. CPJ was never, ever, a good coach, and certainly not the savior that was going to own UGA as most Tech fans tried to make him out to be.

It was obvious in the 4th quarter of the Miami game that CPJ had given up on them too with the horrific playcalling. I was rooting for MT because that would be the only way something would get shaken up. We have too many GT fans in denial about the future of this program under CPJ and would let the hemming and hawing go on for a couple more seasons if Tech has won. Yesterday’s loss left no doubt that we are in serious trouble. And now something must be done.

I think the first two unis of this year should have been the only ones for this year. For the BD reunion, they should have worn the all white they wore for the VT game since Miami wore dark, orange jerseys. BD was the AD when I was there and Tech wore white helmets then, but this year Tech wanted to look like a BD team. They did win, but they could have worn white helmets too. That game threw them off, and then the next week they wore the same gold helmets and lost. Tech yesterday should have worn the all white unis again instead of the tan pants. This uni combination would be a matter of either light ones or dark ones, with the dark ones worn against Presbyterian. But the white helmets are just so cool with the hexagon pattern over them. Groh needs to get back on the field instead of sitting on his behind in the press box.

We will get creamed by the Dawgs this year – no doubt about. When you have a coach forcing a defensive scheme on to players who can’t run it, you get beat by MTSU. Most good coaches figure out what they have and adjust the scheme. Gotta play 4 down lineman to keep o line off linebackers. Got to keep the outside linebackers back to check the TE or fill the zone to stop the slant (ie Jarvis Jones), need a big middle linebacker (like Olgetree) either fill the gap on the run or drop and fill the zone. Need to stop hitting and wrap up and tackle. Groh can’t figure our what to do because Tech players can’t run his D. He needs to wet a hook and go! PJ also has a blind spot with Washington. Vad Lee is clearly more talented. Washington never steps forward into the pocket and he gets creamed. Yes Dawg fans, your team is better coached and you have better talent. We usually make in interesting for 3 quarters then lose in the 4th. Unless things change substantially, we will be done in the second quarter if not earlier.

GT 55, why support CPJ if he denies the reality that the 3optoff is passable and runnable from against a good defensive team that clearly shuts it down on every play? Can you imagine what is going to happen against Clemson, Georgia, and maybe even Duke this year? NC too. Tech needs to drop back in a wildcat as proven by yesterday at end of game when TW was getting creamed, needing a blocker the wildcat would provide on both sides of him. They also need a tight end, and screen plays, perhaps shovel passes also, depending on the density of the dirt and their efficiency curves at those particular times of the game that enable them to shovel or not.

There’s a simple truth here: the program is getting weaker. Johnson has not been able to replace athletes that were here when he arrived. Now dependent entirely on his own recruits, Johnson is putting a mediocre team on the field, especially on defense.
I like PJ but Tech needs to let him go at the end of the season. There are plenty of good young coaches that would love the opportunity to coach at GT.

Rotting from the top: D Rad cost a Acc championship and scholarships and has not been held responsible in any way. What other program would tolerate the arrogance and lack of responsibility. He would have been fired then if in the private sector. Good example of the accountability of a bureaucracy. Does not represent Tech. No apology, just arrogance.
Coaching selection speaking for himself: I feel like punching someone or hanging myself after losing – everyone wants to play for a violent suicidal coach. Not a head coach. After last years remarks re: Walmart – CEO is Tech grad, and using the “r” word – only to get whipped. Not a representative of the Tech I am proud of.

Remember the people who said 7-5 wasn`t good enough so Gailey had to go. Now GT will likely be worse than 7-5 and GT can`t afford another expensive buyout. Suddenly, Chan looks better than PJ to some of his former detractors but Tech can`t afford another buyout of a coach`s contract. You must stick with PJ. VT, Clemson, and Georgia come to Bobby Dodd Stadium next season so there will be people in the seats but there will not be many GT fans in those seats. Again, maybe Tech should apply for membership in the Sun Belt Conference and join those folks, along with Georgia State, in that conference!.

His attitude is like, well yeah we lost so I’m the coach & I do what I want. Start with the AD then CPJ, Groth then the rest of the worthless coaches. Get someone with a Take No Hostages Attitude. Even after Tech lost like 2 years in a row, CPJ made the comment, Oh now I know how important this game is to Tech. You Dumbass. CPJ made the comment also that if he wasn’t winning he would move on.. Not going to pile on the Tech fans today, I think they have endured enough this weekend. But I do have some comments I would like to make. First off CPJ’s offensive scheme isn’t attractive to top athletes, as much as I hate to say this most of the top kids attend a school that has the best chance of getting them to the NFL and CPS’s offense just doesn’t do that. I know Tech has had a couple of WR selected early, but the truth is CPJ’s offense waste their tallent in college. It works for a little while, then DC’s learn or remember why no one uses it anymore and it become ineffective. Its even disappearing from HS now. Tech has had some WR drafted very high, but their tallent was basically wasted in college and the combines pushed them to the top.
Thats one reason I think Tech is having a hard time attracting top athletes, this is completely subjective and could be wrong, but CPJ comes off as an arrogant individual and tends to turn people against him, I can respect him for not coddling these HS drama queens but without them you just can’t compete. Groh was a questionable hire at the time and there is even more questions now, I think he has just fallen behind times.

I HONESTLY CAN’T RECALL A TECH FOOTBALL GAME SINCE THE EARLY 90′S WHEN I SAW A TECH TEAM QUIT IN THE 4TH QUARTER. EVEN WHEN GA WAS BLASTING US AT THE END OF CHAN’S REIGN,THEY PLAYED HARD.
That being said, if this team has any character, they will at least play hard at Clemson…..still don’t get why Groh is still the DC.Hasn’t improved the quality or the morale of the defense since he’s been here.Perhaps we thought too much of this team after VT.
BTW, Va Tech has already lost twice OOC.Perhaps we are not that good right now…..period. We were so swept up with that tough loss to VT that we have probably just now realized that we aren’t that good. Neither are the Hokies this year.

Casual observer here. I live in Indiana, but I like the Jackets and Paul Johnson. I can understand the gnashing of teeth after this loss. I think Al Groh’s seat is a lot hotter than Johnson’s, if only because firing Johnson would set GT back even further. PJ has recruited option players; hard to plug into any other offensive scheme. Tech’s troubles began when John Tenuta left for Notre Dame. Bring in a good, solid defensive coach, and rededicate the team to the basics and the ship can be righted. The question is: Stick with Groh or make a move during the season?

Georgia Tech, one of the oldest and sometimes greatest names in college football should be able to hire and keep a superior coach. One has to wonder what the problem is with accomplishing that. There seems to be a disconnect between the players and coaches and it is growing game by game. In other words the players don’t have faith in the system or the men running it. If DRad isn’t ready to part ways with this group, then the stadium will become practically empty each Saturday as fans vote with their feet and their wallets. It will be even more disgraceful after the debacle the Clemson beat down promises to be. What a mess and it keeps getting worse the longer this situation is allowed to continue.

I said it earlier in the year–Johnson’s advantage the first few years was the scheme. There is a reason no major FBS teams are running the option. But now the scheme has been figured out. And if you don’t have something to back it up (defense), you’re not going to win anymore. UGA will absolutely destroy GT with their running attack if something isn’t improved.

Middle Tennessee 49, Georgia Tech 28: What’s left to say?
Sounds like a normal situation at Histeric Grant Field.
Why don’t you guys and Virginia and Duke just drop down to the FCS level and play there?

It still stings two days later (pun unavoidable) but now we have to look towards the rest of the season and next year. Groh’s not going anywhere before the end of the season and may step down on his own then. Washington is a real trooper, I think, but has not improved on making reads and late in games (incl. OT) when the pressure seems to get to him. It is time to start giving Lee more reps, besides the 1 or 2 series which he gets now (which at least is better than none at all). CPJ must recruit and sign better players, including a QB who can pass as well as run the option….as challenging as it may be. CPJ will show his worth in the coming weeks: either he effects a turnaround or the team wallows in self-pity and incompetence.

This week especially and the rest of the season in general, CPJ proves if he’s a real head coach or just a solid offensive coordinator with a head coach’s job.

Objectively speaking, most the season’s goals are impossible now and it time to look ahead. Beating UGA and qualifying for a bowl game then winning it are the only goals to really shoot for. agreeing with fullmetaljckt, Johnson must show us if he is a head coach or an OC with an unusual offense. The problem with turning over the Defense to an autonomous DC is that you must make sure you pick the right man….and it’s not looking like Johnson did. CPJ is not going anywhere and with a young team there is still hope for next season….IF he can turn around this season. Give LEE and other underclassmen more time.

Well, Johnson truly stinks as a coach. Need to fire Groh this week. $2.6 million is too much to pay to a guy who loses to Middle Tenn!

Tech grad here. I am embarrassed to wear my Tech stuff now. ’nuff said!
Groh must Go! And if he PJ insists on keeping him another year, then HE must go!
We (GT) are now the “cellar team” of ACC football! Ridiculous!

GA Tech will never have a really good team until it stops being satisfied with a bunch of nondescript players, a few 1- and 2-star recruits, with a 3-star thrown in once in a while. Some people think that Tech is too hard academically to attract really good football players that are smart enough to get passing grades. It seems that USC, Stanford, and other schools of that ilk manage to do it; GA Tech ought to be able to do it too.

Oh well, there is always next year, except since the recruiting is so bad there is always the next decade.
