Live from the Braves: There’s a wild card to be clinched

This is how it ended last season. It should go better this time. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

This is how it ended last season. It should go better this time. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Three hundred sixty-three days after they last took the field with a chance to make the playoffs, the Braves are here again. The night of Sept. 28, 2011, went badly: They lost 4-3 to Philadelphia in 13 innings while the Cardinals were winning 8-0 in Houston, and the Braves went nowhere but home.

There’s reason to believe tonight will yield a better return. Kris Medlen is pitching, and the Braves haven’t lost a game he has started since May 23, 2010. The opponent is Miami, which quit on the season long ago and is apparently trying to decide who to fire when. But this is baseball, and as the famous philosopher/pitcher Joaquin Andujar once noted: “There is one word in America that says it all, and that word is ‘you never know.’ ”

The magic number for clinching a wild card is down to 1, so even if the Braves lose the deed would be done should both the Brewers and Dodgers lose. (The former is playing in Cincinnati, the latter in San Diego.) But the Braves would like to be able to have their champagne party — that’s correct; even the wild card is occasion to break out the bubbly — without having to wait around until 1 a.m.

Whatever happens, I’d appreciate your company as the night unfolds. And I’d also ask a favor: In between innings, click over and watch my little video chat with Noah Coslov of CineSport. It concerns the Braves, oddly enough, and we do like it when y’all watch our videos.

As ever, I thank you in advance.

Hadacol, a popular tonic (12% alcohol), used to be one of the Atlanta Crackers’ sponsors on radio. Ebba St. Claire, father of Marlins pitching coach Randy, and a big power hitting catcher, once got into a terrible slump. He rubbed some Hadacol on his bat and broke out.

So Ozzie G and the Marlins owner are at each other’s throats huh? Well, here’s hoping there’s a manager in ATL who will be available to go back there, if he wants him. The Braves are fighting for a wildcard rather than the division crown due to an inept manager. Just 6 more games not lost due to bad managerial decisions would present a different scenario. The Braves are actually where they are now in spite of FG not because of him.

Dum-Bass I think Fredi has done a great job this year after what happened last year. He has not been afraid to mix-up the line-up. He has benched players. He has not overworked the bullpen. However I am sure you could do a MUCH better job!

MB is falling into that same trap as DOB. The Braves are not the wildcard rep in the playoffs until they WIN the one game play-in on Friday the 5th of Oct. Until then there is not much to celebrate. If they lose that game they are in the same boat as all the other teams who don’t make it after 162 games. As CJ said, “IT’S STUPID”! 2 WC contenders=1 WC REP (for the playoffs)

STEVE, FGs ineptitude has shown through mostly on his pitching changes. He has been apt to stay with a veteran pitcher like Hudson way too long. I can think of at least two examples when Hudson had big leads he surrendered. Most managers who have “baseball smarts” would not do that.

Steve

September 25th, 2012
7:55 pm

I was just thinking about that Josh. Greedy MLB will wait until they know who is playing who and then will put the major market teams on prime-time and the others probably at 4:00 if I had to guess. Hoping it’s a night game.

Prado is unreplaceable. With Hudson’s lifetime record when he has a big lead, I’d tend to cut him a little slack, myself. Hindsight isn’t just 20-20, it’s perfect. I’m trying to think about what I’d do in the manager’s place, with Hudson on the mound in the 7th and a four run lead. If he weren’t worn out, I’d let him pitch.

Dum-Bass

Also, STEVE and CRACKER, FG did not start “mixing up his lineup” until way past the all star break, which was too late. Many were calling for him to put Prado at 2B and Reed Johnson in left way before he started doing it. That right there, plus a couple of other “tweaks” could have easily made a 5-6 game difference. You said nobody had cited any examples, there’s two I have presented already. Say “Uncle”.

Most “normal” managers would much prefer to be winning a division than looking forward to playing just one game to see if they can somehow be the wildcard rep. Anything can happen in one game. Ask any of them and see what answer you get. FG has done better, I will grant you that, recently, but he is far from being what would be considered one of the “better” managers in baseball. He comes up way short in many areas.

Mark, after what happened last year, I will be happy to see the Braves get one of the wild cards,. I hope I;m not being too pessimistic, but.. I can’t really feel the electricity unless they get past the “play in game”.

As I’m sure many others have expressed, I’m not in favor of that at all. Even though we will have home field advantage for the game, its still.. uneasy.

My personal feeling is that next year, they should either do away with the play in game.. or.. make it like they did in 1951, and make the two wild cards play a three game series to decide who goes to the NLDS.

After what happened last year, I will be happy if the Braves get it. They have had a good season, but the play in game really is something I dont approve of.

The key at-bat in this inning was Simmons’. Instead of trying to punch the ball to right or right-center and move McCann to 3rd, he flies to left. Standing at home, a batter has 90 degrees of fair territory in front of him. Far too many want to pull the ball, reducing the target area to 30 degrees or so. Prado gets this. Even Freeman hits the ball to left. Uggla is so hard-headed that you’d think he’s trying to hit everything into about 15 degrees worth of the field.

I just really had the feeling the whole time (even after the 2-run Marlins homer took the lead) that the Braves were going to win this one. Medlen so often just dominated the opposition single-handedly and gave the team every chance to win. This was so much poetic justice for Medlen that this time his lineup picked him up!

What an awesome way to go into postseason — first walkoff homer by Freeman and it could not have been larger! Chipper certainly set the table and never saw old balky knees move faster for him to get the double.

Now, with the team enjoying their post-game champagne shower in the locker room, let’s not lose sight of the fact that the Nats are losing against the Phillies and if that holds up, the Braves are just four games down in the loss column with 8 games left to play for both teams! So, should the Braves shock the world and take the NL East they can enjoy a second such shower.

BTW: typing this as Chipper got cold soaked during his interview! That scene was utterly priceless to witness!

It’s only fitting that Chipper got that 9th inning rally started. The epic choke of September 2011 has been officially put to rest.

By his team picking him up, Kris Medlen did not earn the win, but he certainly kept his team in it so they could earn the win. With that result, Medlen now ties Whitey Ford and Carl Hubbel at 22 consecutive team victories when starting the game, and that is for the all-time mark in baseball history!

I don’t know about you but this year is starting to feel a little special. I really like our chances against St. Louis if thats who we face in the WC game. They have really been scuffling and we owe them some payback. Then we get the first two games at home in the divisional round, I think that might give us an advantage if we go up 2-0 and have Med pitching to clinch in Washington. Then its on to 7 game rounds and anything can happen. I believe Braves!!!!

Four games to make up over eight to play is certainly a tall order, but it is certainly possible and a worthy goal. The good news is that the rotation is already set up for Medlen to either start game one of the NLDS or the Wild Card game and so the rotation just needs to keep on trucking! Now, it would be sweet if Hanson could pitch a gem his next time up and keep the ball rolling.

Paul Maholm gets the start tomorrow night and the Braves are going to be full of momentum.

I say, let’s do unto others as was done unto us last year!

Wow! What a great season. Chipper, Freeman, Medlen, Kimbrel. Whatever happens in the playoffs, this is officially my 3rd favorite Braves season, behind ‘91 (I attended game 3 of the NL series against the Pirates and it was so electric) and ‘96 (attended WS game 6 in Atlanta- Glavine, Justice, crazy downtown streets post-game and a loooooong drive home). Despite all the post-season disappointment over the years, it’s pretty good to be a Braves fan…

Such a perfect way to clinch. Freddi made the last out last year, and this year he hit the bomb that put us in the playoffs! Last year we lost 4-3 in the last game, this year we win our playoff-clincher by the same score. I like these signs!

Braves are going to have to do their own dirty work this week as the Astros aren’t going to help with the magic number over the Cards! The Cards scored again in the top of the eighth to make it 3-0, and they have runners on the corners and looking to add more!

The good news is that the Braves are taking care of their own business and at this point, with the magic number at three with eight games to play, it’s looking real good for the Braves to at least have the home field advantage in the Wild Card game if not pull off the immortal and catch the Nats for the division.

Can’t win the World Series unless your in the Playoffs!!
If we can only win 1 game against the Cards, this Team can beat Washington.
Let’s go Braves!!

[...] The setting seemed ripe for clinching. Kris Medlen was starting, and the Braves hadn’t lost a Medlen start since May 23, 2010. The opponent was Miami, which gave up on the season a while back and is now sitting around deciding whom to fire. Give the Marlins credit, though. On this night they looked like a real team. [...]

“AJC Breaking News: Braves beat Marlins, clinch playoff spot”

true statement but also deceptive at the same time. MLB needs to come up with a name for these games since it’s not the “playoffs” per se but rather a “playoff for the playoffs”. Sooo maybe …..
“Braves clinch a spot in Sudden Death”???? “Sudden Death Playoff”? Eh needs some work
