Our weekly Heat Check finds that a warm front has settled over the area. With certain exceptions.
FALCONS: There are three unbeaten NFL teams. This is one. I’d argue that this has been the most impressive one, but sometimes I get carried away. Heat Index: How many times does a team fly across country on a short week and win a game by 24 points on a day it was slotted as a three-point underdog?
MATT RYAN: Leads the NFL in passing efficiency. Just presided over victories in which the opposing quarterbacks were Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers. Heat Index: Yeah, it’s early. But he’s looking a bit like an MVP candidate, is he not?
GEORGIA: Beat Vanderbilt by 45 points and looked great doing it. And it’s not always easy to beat Vandy — ask South Carolina — or look good in the process. Heat Index: The comprehensive nature of Saturday’s victory recalled the Georgia teams of 2002-2004, when great talent was buttressed by attention to detail.
BRAVES: Magic number to clinch a wild card is two. Have crept within 4 1/2 games of Washington, which is the closest they’ve been to first place in the NL East since August. Heat Index: No collapse — epic or otherwise — this time, folks.
MIKE MINOR: Remember when he looked like the worst starting pitcher in baseball? He’s 3-0 in September with an ERA of 1.09. Heat Index: He might just start Game 2 of the Division Series, assuming the Braves get there.
TOMMY HANSON: He’s 0-4 since returning from the disabled list. His ERA in September is 4.57; in August it was 5.74. Heat Index: Not sure he’ll make the postseason roster.
GEORGIA TECH: It’s difficult to score 36 unanswered points in a game and not win it. But the Jackets just did. Heat Index: It’s likewise difficult to yield 609 yards to a Miami team that managed only 262 in a 39-point loss at Kansas State. Leave it to Al Groh, though.
GEORGIA STATE: Lost to Richmond by three touchdowns before the smallest announced crowd in Panther history. Heat Index: If GSU doesn’t win at William & Mary on Saturday — the Tribe is also 0-4 – Bill Curry’s final season could end without a victory.
DREAM: Finished third in the WNBA East after their usual slow start. Will open the playoffs at Indiana on Friday. Heat Index: It hasn’t been a smooth ride — after the month-long Olympic break, the Dream fired their coach and suspended their best player — but they have a track record of showing up in the postseason.

Dawgs are hot. But so is South Carolina. They escaped an away game at Vandy in the 4th quarter in the first game of the season, we were in a nailbiter at Mizzou in the second week until we took over the 4th quarter . South Carolina utterly dominated Mizzou at home a month into the season, while we utterly dominated Vandy at home. I think we’re looking pretty comparable, and we play them in their house. I’d say they should be about 3 point favorites.

Yes Dawgs looked good. I wouldn’t read too much into the SC/UGA v Missouri games and the scores. We were without 1/2 our defense plus Missouri didn’t show too much their first game of the season. So that didn’e give us a whole lot to look at on tape. SC had the benefit of our game to watch what Missouri would be doing. Regardless SC looked pretty good Saturday. Dawgs did too even though it was Vandy. Next week will be a better barometer but if all our D is back I think we are in good shape right now.

Just a thought, but my opinion of Mizzou is that UGA welcomed them to the SEC, then Franklin got hurt, then had to come back against another strong D, maybe a little timid? I do not know , but i still think the Dawgs shut down Lattimore, (slow him down anyway), and make Shaw win it. I don’t think he has it in him. Dawgs roll!

Fellow Dawgs – why on earth are we talking about SC! Focus should just be on the UT game. The only part of this Saturday I worry about is that our Dawgs have not played back to back strong games in a long time. I have visions of several years ago when LSU came into Athens and we spanked them good and then UT, a very weak UT team, came in and beat us by 4 and ruined our season.
I’ll worry about SC next week. It’s all about UT this week!

Paul Johnson makes the decisions, so the loses to Miami and VT fall right at his feet. He has had five years to get things on a firm foundation at GT and the best he can do is put poorly coached teams on the field. Whether its poor special teams play, consistently awful defensive play or an offense that plays not to loose, Johnson is ultimately responsible. His book of work says he can’t beat the good teams, which means its time for a change, unless GT just wants to be average.

Still not clear to me the ruling on Orwin Smith k.o. return. They were saying it all depended on where the ball was. If the ball was still in the end zone, which they determined, I thought that was a touch back. If it crossed the line, I thought it would be spotted where the ball was down. Was it ruled that he crossed the line and came back in the end zone? Still not sure what the ruling was.

Is the SEC excluding Alabama really living up to its hype? Just look at the remaining schedule for UGA:
UT (3-1) Very unproven, and lost its only real test of the season.
#6 USCe (4-0) Has played nobody. Mizzou is a sham.
UK (1-3) Lost to W KY. SEC, baby!
#11 UF (4-0) The most interesting team left on UGAg’s schedule.
Ole Miss (3-1) Beat 3 patsies and got demolished by Texas. SEC baby! (pt. 2)
Auburn (1-3) A pitiful team. An overtime win against UL separates them from 0-4. SEC, baby! (pt.3)
GA Sou (2-1) Lost to the Citadel.
GA Tech (2-2) Demolished two bad teams and lost to two good teams in OT.
USCe or UF might slip up on them, but UGAg’s conference schedule for the 2nd year in a
row is a set-up for a division champ but in all honesty will UGA really be tested by the mythical beasts of the SEC until its championship game?

Gamecocks are overrated! QB is still an issue for them as Shaw does not scare anybody with his ability to throw downfield. Lattimore is not 100% yet. Defense is not the same without Ingram commanding double teams and Gilmore in the secondary. Dawgs are better!
The national media is drinking Crimson Tide kool-aid. They are nowhere near the defensive team this year as last year. Unless they drastically improve, their secondary is their weakest link- not so, last year. If Dennard Robinson could throw accurately, Michigan could have made some plays against them in the passing game. With that, Dawgs are better. My only concern about UGA is will we show up every week? More than enough talent to clearly be the best team in the country, but will we capitalize on it like Auburn did?
CPJ, throw the darn ball more! While opposing D-Coordinators may not be as smart as you, they certainly are smart enough to devise defenses to stop dives and sweeps.

I would agree this UGA team looks a lot like the 2002-2004 variety. However, this is a much tougher SEC. UGA didnt go undefeated in either of those years, being upset by UF in 2002 and UT in 2004. They lost twice to eventual SEC and national champ LSU in 2003, and lost to eventual SEC champ Auburn in 2004.
I think Richt has the program back to those years, but is that good enough? It was only good for one SEC title back then. Now they have a top 10 South Carolina, a top 15 Gator team, and likely a #1 Alabama team waiting in the SEC championship. That doesnt even count upsets. They could be as good as 2002-2004 and still not even play for the SEC title.

As for Georgia Tech, their current situation should surprise no one with a functioning set of eye balls and a brain. I think part of their problem is that the supposedly “great run” they had in 2008-2009 really wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Tech fans had all these pie in the sky notions about their football program fueled by a soft local media (cough….Bradley….cough) that were really never that realistic. I was never that impressed. I think they’re unsual offense caught a lot of people off guard during those two years and benefitted from a usually pathetic ACC and a defensively down UGA in 2008. Teams have adjusted. They had a couple of great players on offense that carried them that are of course gone now (I’m a big fan of Nesbitt). The writing on the wall should have been the 2009 UGA game when we pushed their defense around like a blocking sled. That is not big boy football. You can rush for 800 yards per game and you will not win many big boy football games with a defense like that. Now Paul Johnson’s poor recruiting is really rearing its ugly head. Georgia Tech will be struggling to win 7 or 8 games per year from hear on out. True story.
Thanks.

Put down the crack pipe. When you look at Alabama and Georgia this year…Where in the world is Alabama better than Georgia at?? I’ll give Alabama the edge on the offensive line. That’s it! Georgia has the better quarterback, wide receivers, running backs, defensive line, linebackers with ogletree, secondary…This is 2012. This is not 2008 when willie martinez was the D coordinator. This is not 2011 when we were just learning how to get back to where we use to be. Everything is different this season. You can just see it with the leadership of Aaron Murray and Jarvis Jones. This is the best team Richt has had. Period. This team has an attitude about it that I have never seen under coach Richt. Enjoy this special season dawg fans! GO DAWGS!

What are the sportswriters looking at when they keep moving SEC schools up in the polls. Alabama and LSU – ok they are warranted. USC and Georgia? Alabama beat Michigan and a very confused Arkansas and LSU beat Washington and a bad redition of Auburn. USC and UGA both beat Missouri and Vanderbilt!!!!! (WOW) Beside those huge wins they have beaten Sunbelt schools that are getting paid millions for a win. None of these teams have a winning record. Is this what it takes to be at the top in polls? It is way too early to be ranking anyone. Have Georgia play Alabama or LSU and see what happens.

Some people was asking us what happened to Tommy Hanson’s velocity and we was thinking maybe he hurt it in the accident on the way to spring training. He still has some velocity remaining so it didn’t just fly out of the car but the velocity he has left is reduced and that makes us think it may have been bruised or banged around a little when the car left the roadway and plunged down that embankment. In any case, the wreck also appears to have flattened out Tommy’s fastball and that has made him an ordinary pitcher instead of a phenom. We was also distracted a little by the way he pushes the ball at the batter instead of just raring back and heaving it and we was wondering if he will still pitch like that with his new team?

It really is embarrassing to be a Tech fan these days. All our excuses about this program are really wearing thin. I remember CPJ’s comments when he was hired saying there was no reason championships couldn’t be won at GT. Well, he won one with Gailey’s players and the program has gone down since. In his 5th year this program should be showing marked improvement if improvement is to come but it’s the same old thing; poor recruiting, coaching, apathetic fan base, etc.
We will be extremely lucky to go 7 – 5 this year. Really pathetic to read comments like “and then there’s Tech.”

Smyrna Gold……Looking at the Tech program from a distance, Johnson will sign 2 or 3 plums a year and the rest Western Carolina type material. You get 3 years under your belt of that type recruiting like he has and it catch’s up to you. I do feel he coach’s them up, but at the end of day, you load the roster up with mostly 2 star and no star, and it’s going to show up against BCS talent type teams. Gotta love the uga fan base. Get a big when over Vanderbilt, after having to come back to beat Mizzou, and all the sudden they are a ready to challenge Bama. Look, I like uga and think they have a strong team this year. But the East is much harder than expected, so beating both SC and Fla. is going to be tough. If the dawgs are lucky enough to pull that off, they are going to have to face a Semi-Pro team in SEC Championship. The Dawgs don’t stand a chance against Bama. But neither does anyone else in the country. So don’t feel bad. rtr.

It’s hard to have a more perfect sports weekend than we just had. Georgia dominates a Vandy team that had played everyone close and also had a HUGE chip on their shoulder from last season. Falcons are as far from flat after a big win and a short week and a cross country trip as is possible. Did I mention the freak heat wave that the Falcons had to face as well? The Braves take the series from philly and look ready for a long playoff run.
On the petty but almost as enjoyable side of the perfect weekend. the north avenue trade school not only loses they do so in embarassing fashion against a team of freshman and with the self proclaimed “genius” making a hilariously stupid decision in OT. The taint’s lose again and looked clueless. They are the team to play if you are winless. Even dog killer vick and rapistberger combine for losses. So satisfying.

Georgia Tech plays legitimate student-athletes who will go on to successful careers in industrial management and engineering.
Georgia plays illiterate bozos who would not have met the academic requirements to enter any college or university. The few who actually graduate will have worthless degrees and skills for which there is no demand. Most will be pathetic losers who are a burden on society. Fortunately the CEOs of Walmart and Waffle House are Tech alumni who will give some of them jobs, but even a graveyard shift fry cook has to have some skills and the ability to stay sober.
Yes, Tech fans would love to defeat Georgia more often, but not at the win-at-all-cost price that Georgia pays.

Tech is done for the season and until Groh and Johnson are gone. For $2.6 million a year you get a home loss by 21 points in Middle Tenn.
