Vad Lee on Saturday's 79-yard non-scoring excursion. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
1. Vad Lee might just be the top-end talent Georgia Tech otherwise lacks. Granted, it was one game against Presbyterian, but still: In the the third quarter alone, the redshirt freshman Lee authored the sixth-longest pass completion in Tech annals (82 yards to Jeff Greene) and the longest non-scoring run (79 yards) in school history. Lee isn’t apt to become the starting quarterback anytime soon — he’s still too raw — but he at least gives Paul Johnson a change-of-pace option.
2. For one night, the big plays were back. Tech’s longest gain from scrimmage at Virginia Tech was 22 yards. It had eight plays of 39 yards or longer Saturday night, four in the blowout third quarter. Again, this was against Presbyterian. But not since the record-setting Kansas game (66 points, 768 yards) of last September had the Jackets’ offense displayed such a separation gear (59 points, 712 yards). Johnson’s spread option is a different animal when the yards come in chunks.
3. The Jackets responded to the Virginia Tech loss in a mostly positive way. True, they fumbled four times (losing three), but you can’t have it all. Everything else was impressive enough to send this team into a key fortnight — home games against Coastal division brethren Virginia and Miami, both of whom beat Tech last season — feeling better about themselves. If the Jackets are to hang close enough to have a chance to catch Virginia Tech, they have to win these next two.

It looks like CPJ is finally realizing that to win at this level he needs some more outside-the-box “wrinkles” on his offense. He’s starting to try some crazy stuff. Like forward passes and the QB standing a few steps back from the line.

As a UGA fan, I have no idea why Gt would not just go with Lee from here out. There is nothing to lose. There are no other big-time skill players on the roster. Lee can be a difference maker. He may be raw, but he gives you the chance to be explosive on offense, which Washington does not.
I hope that Johnson continues to ride Washington, especially when they play Gt, but Lee will make other DC’s stay up late at night with worry.

My guess is that Vad will get several reps against Virginia as well, and prove that he can be successful against the supposed more “talented” players. Once he does that, he’ll get more and more snaps and will be starter before the end of the season, with the Jackets running more and more plays out of the pistol formation.

Leroy…no doubt, CPJ has come to this realization because of the thoughts of all the armchair coaches posting on blogs! I ,however, am going to go with the possibility that CPJ has made changes based on the talent at his disposal.
Vad Lee gave us a glimpse of Tech’s future…so bright that I might have to wear shades! TW has the most knowledge of this offense and is our best option at the moment…looking forward to seeing our team match up with Virginia and Miami later this month!!! GO TECH!!!

Back to the subject at hand, one Vad Lee. I took the time and went back to view a reply of the game this morning, paying particular attention to his play. His mechanics and footwork are well above average, his arm strength is plus and he has an awareness on the field that is obvious. On the long run it was a called QB draw but the snap was not good, he was not fazed, went up got the ball and made the play. No matter the quality of the opposition (or lack thereof) what you see in him will translate. He’s going to make mistakes as all young QBs do but he’s going to make plays that others could not make. I feel CPJ is bringing him along the right way and as the season goes along I expect to see more and more of Vad. In my opinion he’s going to bring a level of play not seen on the Flats since Lil Joe. I eagerly await the Vad Lee era!

If CPJ cares about winning and winning championships, then you play the better, more talented players (cough, cough, something Richt has to be forced to do). Forget about how “raw” a player is, this move will give them confidence in the long run as they receive baptism by fire. Start Vad Lee now. He has been on campus for two off-seasons, two springs, two fall camps, and one regular season. If RG3 and Cam Newton can transition from spread offenses in 4 months to NFL-like spread offenses, then so can Vad Lee learn CPJ’s simple offense. Some players play better in games than at practice. Ask Tebow.

I trust CPJ to make the right decision on how to bring Vad Lee along and when and when not to play him. In defense of Tevin Washington, I believe he is not given the credit he deserves. Since he took over when No. 9 went down, GT has done very well considering their overall talent level and the opponents they played. A couple of big plays against PC should not anoint Vad Lee as the saviour for the GT offense.

This game elevates us to new heights. We beat VT, but lost the game. We know we were better than them. This game made me realize what a great team we are and that we will not be denied. We have proved we can beat anybody by this 59-3 drubbing of a really good team. VT should be ranked at least #4 in the country with us close behind in front of the mangy mutts. Our Defence is dominate. It is an imovable object while our Offence is The irresistable force that can’t be denied. We are on the cusp of greatness and the fans need to represent our awesomeness. Next week, we can make a statement against a Monster Virginia team. When we destroy them, the world will recognize our greatness and elevate us to our rightful place in the polls. Right around #7. It should be open when the dirty curs get a beatdown by an improved Florida Atlantic. I also think our new uniforms are the bomb.

Not to understand the natural progression of this team is to deny it’s destiny. Does a loss mean the end of a season? No, it marks the beginning of another journey. Man evolved because he wasn’t satisfied, he wanted more. We want more. If you must lose, lose early and learn from your mistakes. I believe this team is not a loser. I believe this team was better than VT! I believe this team can win. You so-called fans have become accustomed to losing and that is what you expect. You must change your own expectations so the team can feed off of your influnce. This team can win it all this year, but not with a bunch of loser so-called fans.

Sav St got $880,000 from those 2 games, per Wes Durham & DRad on pregame show on the radio. Presby got $400,000 form the GT game plus they play Vandy next week. They’ve built a new weight room with $300,000 from GT. Per DRad, the ACC chipped in some money to make the GT/VT Monday night game happen. Before the payday from GT, they expected to build the new weight room in 3-5 years. Schools like this need the money. Much like Frank Howard & Clemson, when they came to Atlanta every year for a long time. Money!!

After watching Tevin for three years, I tend to agree with UGA fan “Joe”. Tevin many make fewer mistakes, but his upside is so much lower. After seeing Vad’s arm, GT wouldn’t need a wide open receiver to complete another soft floating pass. Lee also has the size and speed to run the option.

#3 Bumble-Bee….Fla State got the same thing GT got….they had WVU scheduled in that spot, but when they cancelled because of moving to the Big12, FSU needed a game to fill out their schedule. Like DRad said on the radio, filling an unexpected schedule hole is difficult & they had to scramble, beg & plead to fill an “emergency” open date to get back to 12 games. Presby originally turned GT down. They also got 2 round ball games out of GT.

Ole Jacket. The thing about CPJs offense is that it’s effective because nobody in college has seen it since high school and they don’t prepare for it every week. Give just about ANY fcs school more than a week to prepare for it and it becomes ineffective. . What’s techs record against teams with a bye week the week before they play tech? The proof is in the past. Keep drinking the cool aide, old man. We love Paul Johnson almost as much as we loved Reggie Ball!

@ option smoption, that’s a myth about teams having a week off “figuring out the offense.” Plus in the first two games, on a percentage basis, the number of plays run out of the triple option was less that that run out of the shotgun and the pistol, both “standard” college offensive systems.

smoption okay, whatever you say, you have your thoughts and Tech fans have theirs. But let me ask you a question. When CPJ was running it ag GA Southern how come it was so effective? Instead of worrying about the mangy mutts, we should concentrate on Virginia. One game at a time people. If we waste time on the dogs, it’s just wasted. Wait until we play them. They are meaningless right now. Save your hate for the Cavs, we must beat them to become relevant. One game at a time. Every game from here on out is important. UGA means nothing.

This is not a game you can point to for anything. It’s no coincidence you point to the Kansas as the last time the big plays hit with regularity. Kansas and Presbyterian dont field defenses that have any hope of stopping the option. Until it returns with regularity against the teams Tech needs to beat to avoid 7 win seaons + a minor bowl (ACC foes, UGA, major non-conference opponents), what happens in paycheck games doesnt matter.

Mike S., it wasn’t just the option they couldn’t stop. As was said earlier, the option was only a minor part of the overall offensive game plan last night. Presbyterian couldn’t stop any of it. But that kind of game does one thing for you: it gives second and third string players to see how they can perform in a real game environment. There’s a big difference between that and day-to-day intra-squad scrimmages.

To make this season one to remember, we must play one game at a time. CPJ and the true-fans can’t afford to look ahead. He has to, its his job. That’s what we pay him for, but we get ahead of ourselves. I hope everyone is laser-focused on The University of Virginia. We can win the rest of our games this way. The season is here. Your right, Ga Southern was good with Paul Johnson. The reason why is simple. Erk Russel built a dynasty at Ga Southern that Paul Johnson walked into. They had already won four national championships in fbs before he took over as coach. They were stacked with talent. And just like five star kids having a short list of schools today (usc, alabama, florida, texas, lsu), it was the same then with kids with 1-AA scollys. Their short list was Ga Southern, Appalachian State, Furman, Montana, and Youngstown State. In other words, CPJ had the best talent in the fbs and all he had to do was run the offense that Erk Russel taught him and not screw it up. That is why he was effective at Ga Southern. .

Stephen Hill, 5 for 89 yards and 2 TDs. I guess receivers can’t make the NFL from GT?
________________
Since you want to boot-strap CPJ’s gimmicky system to S. Hill success, then explain WHY CPJ hasn’t made this current crop of WRs into “S.Hill-lite”, they don’t block and they aren’t any threat when they play BCS-level talent.
BTW, S. Hill’s performance should ANGER YOU MORE THAN ANYTHING!
If S.Hill has the talent to go for 5 or so catches and 2 TDs on opening day in the NFL just 3 yrs. out of HS with NO RS, then ask yourself WHY CPJ got so little out of S.Hill when he was matched up against crappy ACC DBs?
I guess CPJ ain’t the genius you guys make him out to be since he got very LITTLE out of Hill in comparison to his elite athleticism & upside.
At the same time CPJ had these 3 guys at WR:
6-3 235lbs Thomas 4.38 forty
6-4 195 lbs. Hill 4.36 forty
6-2 210lbs. K. Cone 4.37 forty
With all that FUTURE NFL TALENT AT WR on one team, CPJ looked out over his team and said to himself, “I’m an offensive genius, I’ll think I’ll avg. 13 passes per game, after all I’m known for getting the MOST out of my talent”.
In comparison, what do you think Patterson at TCU would have gotten out of them, Petrino (even as a scumbag he’s still a “real” offensive genius), Lane Kiffin, Peterson from Boise?
For a guy whose rep is that he maximizes his given talent he sure has wasted some pretty athletic WRs, one (Bey-Bey) out of three isn’t enough if you ask me.
Hill & Cone were completely wasted by CPJ which is one reason WHY WR recruiting has been so crappy since Hill signed 3+ years ago.

If the people in charge don’t care about gold and white and tradition why should I. Wear glitter and sparkles for all it matters so long as we post some “Ws”, especially against teams that matter.

Awesome performance from CPJ and the Jackets (as usual).
Next time conference realignment is being discussed, should we consider jumping to the Big South Conference? I think we’d really dominate.

wrexie, I’ll thank you not to address me in this forum. I have nothing to say to you. Instead of addrssing me or anything I post why don’t you go find a teenage recruit to stalk.

It is the HC’s job to recruit decent QBs that can take advantage of talented WRs, also there was one year when all three were on the Team at the same time, that was Hill’s T-Fr. year, and after Bey-Bey left CPJ still had Hill & Cone, 2 outstanding physical specimens at WR on the same team and still didn’t throw the ball enough.
It is great to brag on how well those guys are doing in the NFL, but at the same time you would be remiss if you didn’t ask WHY our “Genius HC” didn’t get more out of them (Hill & Cone specifically) when they played for GT.
If you’re gonna brag on their NFL exploits you also have to ask why 2 of those guys didn’t do more at GT.

GT offense won’t be awesome against big teams until QB can make timing pitch on the corner.Huge plays come when A-backs get open in space. Then the B-back can break open, and the passing game will work.

A win over a tune up opponent is not worthy of comment. I will be impressed when they beat someone decent — when they show some real character when the game is on the line. Unlike the VT game when they had it in the bag and then just laid down and let the other guy have it. I blame the coach. Here is the principle, very simply: It is great to have a killer running game, but when the other guy shuts down the run, you have to have an alternate plan prepared. You can’t just say “well, let’s just keep on doing what we do.” The alternate plan (in my humble view) would be to have an effective passer on the team and to use him.

Seems like we Techies could develop a “Quick Read” QB simulator, whereby our QBs would be trained to make quick reads and decisions fot the TO. So our QBs would go to the film room and see a set up similar to Madden-13. There would be a quick flash of a defensive set or a defensive set put into game time speed and then the QB would be quizzed on what set he saw and what the correct TO decision should be. Our QBs need to be unconsciously proficient with their TO decisions. Malcolm Gladwell suggests that is takes 14,000 repetitions to get them there.
Build the “Quick Read” simulator boys…
