Georgia Tech coulda/shoulda won this, but somehow it lost

After much ado, this is how the long night ended. (AP photo)

After much ado, this is how the long night ended: With the other Tech celebrating. (AP photo)

Blacksburg, Va. – Yes, crowning a division champion on Labor Day is more than a bit presumptuous, there being three months of football remaining. But we say it again: The winner of Tech-Tech has taken the ACC Coastal title every year there has been a Coastal Division, and as of this moment you’d have to say …

The Tech based on North Avenue is not the team to catch.

Georgia Tech came very close to a famous upset but fizzled in the final 44 seconds of regulation, watching Virginia Tech drive 51 yards to the tying field goal as regulation expired. Then, in the first overtime, quarterback Tevin Washington tried to make something happen and wound up helping his team lose. Washington forced a pass under duress, and the interception doomed the Jackets.

“I was trying to throw the ball away,” Washington said. Instead his weak throw was taken by the Hokies’ Kyle Fuller, meaning the home side only had to kick a field goal to win. Which it did.

After two lesser seasons, Georgia Tech needed a winning start, the kind of start that could well feed into an appearance in the ACC championship game come December. The Jackets almost had it, but then it was gone. And now they head home knowing that, for them to win the Coastal, Virginia Tech must lose not once but twice.

“We had a great opportunity to win the game, no question,” said Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech’s coach.

Even before the frantic ending, it had been a strange evening. I flash flood watch was issued early, but the game went off without a drop of precipitation. This was great news for everyone who recalled Aug. 27, 2000, when the two Techs sought to open the college season in Lane Stadium but were undone by lightning, a slash of which destroyed the rental car of the famous ESPN prognosticator Lee Corso.

Then there were the uniforms. The Jackets unveiled their new mostly-white look. The only gold to be found was on the helmet decal and the sleeves, and the most memorable feature of the headgear was its honeycomb effect. (What, no antennae?) Not to be outdressed, the Hokies broke out their quadruple-scoop ice cream cone ensemble — black socks, white pants, orange jerseys, purple helmets.

Speaking of duds: For 30 minutes, both offenses qualified. These two Coastal powers, neither of which is based anywhere near a coast, staged an opening half that might have had the neutrals watching on the Worldwide Leader hoping for lightning to liven things up … or, failing that, flipping the channel. Virginia Tech managed 137 first-half yards, Georgia Tech 107.

The third quarter was different for one Tech. The Jackets’ seasoned offensive line began to push the Hokies backward, and the visitors outgained Virginia Tech 85 yards to minus-7 in the quarter. The final period began with David Scully making a 34-yard field goal to put Georgia Tech ahead, and it stayed there after Virginia Tech blew a shortish field goal of its own. (Hey, aren’t Frank Beamer’s guys supposed to aces on special teams?)

The Jackets couldn’t move after Virginia Tech’s miss, and the halting affair entered the final 10 minutes. The massive Hokie quarterback Logan Thomas hadn’t done much, but he found Marcus Davis for 35 yards on a slant. Then Demitri Knowles, a third-string wideout, ran past cornerback Rod Sweeting to snatch Thomas’ pass in the end zone.

Now the visitors were in arrears on the road, and the orange-draped crowd was at full roar. Worse still, the best Jacket ballcarrier — A-back Orwin Smith — was gone with a shoulder injury. But that’s life in the big time: If you’re going to win a game of consequence, you can’t do it with a faint heart.

Quarterback Tevin Washington, who nearly engineered a famous victory here in 2010 while spelling the injured Joshua Nesbitt, broke a long run to give the Jackets field position. Then he muscled for a first down at the Virginia Tech 41. Then Paul Johnson, who earlier had gone for it (and failed) on fourth down at his 49, appeared to order a punt from the Hokies’ 37 with 3:03 remaining.

Then, remembering that he’s Paul Johnson, he called time and rethought. Whatever play Johnson called broke down, but Washington dodged away from pressure and found B.J. Bostic in front of three defenders for the vital first down. Then, inside the final minute, Washington stood in against a rush and found A-back Deon Hill on a crossing route, Hill diving in for the take-the-lead touchdown with 44 seconds remaining.

Then Georgia Tech’s defense, stout most of the night, wobbled. Virginia Tech drove to the tying field goal as regulation expired. Thomas found Corey Fuller twice, the second time on fourth-and-4 with 13 seconds remaining.

The last game of the long weekend would go longer. And it would end poorly for the team in white. Credit the effort, yes, but not the outcome.

For further reading, if not edification: Here are three observations (made by yours truly) regarding the excruciating game, and if you missed our well-visited live chat during the game itself … well, here you go.

A lack of blocking, a lack of talent, a lack of coaching. The only bright spot all night was the effort of the undermanned d-line & perhaps the almost equally mediocre look of the Hokies.

Great game by CPJ and CAG but GT let it get away from them. 4 seconds and 45 yards to go, you should win but . . . first OT inside the 25, now this is CPJ game but . . . that one hurt. Teven Washington looked great and was almost the hero but… oh well the key is going to be if the Jackets and Washington can rebound or does this loss set a tone. I would still like to see Days and Vad a lil bit more.

Are you guys sure you didn’t hire Paula Johnson as your head football coach.

Paula is Paul’s ugly identical twin sister and doesn’t know squat about football.

Tech played well, on the road, and VT made a couple of their own breaks. This was a game that could easily have gone the other way…Tech is fine. One less call for VT (on the scoring drive – what was that for?) and we’d have had it. Coulda/shoulda is right but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a great year.

Washington’s throw was just stupid. What else can you call it? He did the only thing you cannot do in that situation….turn the ball over. Just dumb. That was a freshman mistake. And Sweeting… he needs to get his head in the game and save the showboating. Every time it seemed VT needed a big play, that’s where they went, to young Rod. If Tevin is the best they have, it’s gonna be a long year.

Tevin didn’t lose the game, he didn’t win it either. Larger blaim goes to two of the ‘veteran’ DB’s who both missed tackles to allow VT to get in position for the tying FG in regulation.

The media has been saying this is the best VT defenes in the Beamer era, GT held the ball for 35 minutes so they didn’t play bad. Tevin showed a ton of guts to get the go ahead score with 44 seconds on two PASS plays. Hell CPJ even ran the pistol!!

Missing Holton and his tackling was tough. Hope Orwin is OK. Tevin took some massive hits and played well for all but one play…..

Better get their minds right quick, as the remaining games in September will tell the remainder of this season in the ACC, but it looks like the Coastal is a stretch goal now.

This one hurt. Defense played outstanding all game long. A couple of missed tackles really hurt, as well as a questionable personal foul, but all in all, the defense played their hearts out. There is no excuse for that throw in overtime. Tevin made a lot of poor reads throughout the game. Tech will never get over the hump with a game manager like Tevin Washington at quarterback. With a loss in a key game like this, it is time to get some snaps for Days and/or Lee and get the best athletes on the field for Tech.

The throw in OT was bad, but he was also 5-6 for 34 yards and a TD on the final drive, plus 4 rushes for 31 additional yards (on a 72 yard drive). If we keep them out of FG range after a touchback with 44 seconds left, Tevin is a hero.

Anyone saying that either Groh or PJ need to go probably had too much to drink. Defense held VT to under 100 yards rushing. ONE long play TD against Sweeting, Young, Drummond and Holton out. I’d say the defense exceeded expectations. The offense? 35 minutes of possession and showcased the Pistol. Hope CPJ sticks with it and uses it more. Will help with recruiting.

How many of Tevins runs would have been LONG gainers with Justin Thomas at QB?

Paul Johnson is the best coach on the flats since Bobby Dodd. Every intelligent person that has watched this team for the past 4 years knows that his offense is elite. The problem is that Washington is incapable of making the proper reads. Paul Johnson abandoned his bread and butter in the 2nd half bc he was aware of this fact and it almost led to a victory. It’s time for the Vad Lee era to begin. Props to both defenses for a well played ball game tonight. Jackets looked great on D with the exception of 2 plays. Washington will cause a lot of headaches, but there are plenty of wins to be had on this schedule. Georgia fans: No one cares to hear your opinion. I am not a big fan of Tevin Washington. He is, the best I can say, sufficient in most areas. He is a mediocre runner for an option QB as he has almost no ability to make a man miss to break a big run. He did manage to escape a few tackles tonight, but several chances to bust a long run vaporized quickly due to lack of agility and speed.

He passes okay, and I am guessing he is better at it than the other QBs on the depth chart, but his lack of big-play running are killing the GT offense against any reasonably good team. I would love to see another QB get in more and see what they can bring. I suspect that a few big plays from the QB would occur with a better runner.

I am not sure why, but the entire time PJ has been at GT, we have had plodding option QBs. As I recall watching GSU and Navy, his best (most consistently good) offenses were found when a FAST QB was starting, not a plodder with no agility. I would just like to see a big run occur occasionally from someone other than an A-back. The B-back big runs seemed to have left with Dwyer, though I think Preston Lyons and now Zack Laskey were the best at getting solid yardage nearly every run (the other starters the past few years have too many ’stopped for no gain’ runs).

I would love to see Justin Thomas, Vad Lee or anyone at QB that actually can make a big play with his feet. I would trade off an extra incompletion or two a game for the threat of a big play. Washington does not bring this to the table, except against FCS teams maybe.

CPA can coach but it is obvious he can’t recruit. It was painful to watch the lack of talent on the field. If the score was based on talent, Va. Tech would have won hands down. CPA’s coaching kept them in the game. But the bottom line is I don’t think he will last. You can put some of the recruiting on

This will be the beginning of the end for Mr. Washington. He plays with a lot of heart and tries, but he just isn’t doing a good job of running the offense when the going gets tough. Yes he did engineer a touchdown drive when we really needed it, but that was in our “run around until someone gets open” offense, not our base offense. He made the wrong reads constantly or just makes up his mind and then rushes to make the pitch or keeper with no gaming the defense. In short, he plays more like a sophomore than a senior and we cannot have that at this point. Even if he is ahead of Days and Lee, I’d rather go with them and build for the future while still winning more than we lose now. He has topped out and that peak is more like a Georgia hill than the Alps.

Sweeting was toasted the whole tying drive. Opponents are gonna watch that film and see that he is the weak link in our defense. If Tevin is the best we have under this system, then maybe it is time for a change at HC. Look at the record. 1 win against VT, 1 win against Miami(who stink), 1 win against Ugaggs, 0 bowl wins. Gailey(who stunk as a HC btw) proved we could get the talent here, now we have to have someone who can coach it. My first thoughts for next years HC are for Ga’s DC or the head coach from Vandy. I mean, you KNOW this team is 7-5 at seasons end with losses to Clemson, Miami, BYU, and the Athens pig-farmers, followed by another mediocre bowl loss to put us at 7-6.

I typically wonder about Johnson’s stubborn play calling and philosophy of the game but I am not at practice or on the sidelines or in the huddle and it is hard to argue with his overall success everywhere he has been. But, that was a game between to mediocre teams with marginal speed and athleticism. Both teams could end up blitzed by teams like Clemson and FSU. that being said what I don’t understand is Tech’s lack of depth. Johnson is using his players by now, not Gailey’s. How can he have only 17 players on defense? how can he have such lack of studs at running back(goodhigh is hardly adequate for instance). Most major college teams are 2 deep, sometimes 3. See the Dawgs for example. what has he and his staff been doing in recruiting?

Playing this game early will make us better the rest of the season. The only thing we need now is a wide receiver’s coach……never seen a team before where the wideouts just jog straight down the field…how about a post, slant, curl, sideline. flag……anything that looks like a pattern coach?! I am tired of throw it up and pray…it makes our quarterbacks look worse than they are. Oh yes one more thing…why can’t we recruit a quarterback for this system? CPJ and Surrier are equal failures in this category. It is painful to watch our offense with out a quality athelete at quarterback. Al G has now completed his project. Will the defense now be better than the offense forever?

Once again I’d like to read an article about Va. Tech that doesn’t mention Frank Beamer’s special teams mastery. For most of the 90s, VT had good special teams. During this century, it hasn’t. Va. Tech is a bit better than Bowling Green and Buffalo. I think Tech played a great game and should have won the game……but Va. Tech is not as good as advertised….nor…..it appears….. is their QB. GT does not have the same athletes in the backfield that they had a few years ago. They look slow now. The QB made a horrible, horrible decision to throw that ball. What was he thinking? But it was a fun game to watch….expecially at the end. Tech D looked good until the end….or Va. Tech’s offense was horrible until the end. Not sure which at this time.

CPJ - great coach - just ask him!

Paul Johnson and Georgia Tech = mediocrity.

Facts:

2-6 in their last 8 games

14-13 since the start of the 2010 season.

15-15 since a 10-1 start to the 2009 season. Then Caleb King and Ealey ran all over you and Iowa flattened you.

0-4 in bowl games. 1-4 vs. Virginia Tech. 1-3 vs. Georgia and 1-4 is absolutely coming.

Johnson did a great job his 1st 2 seasons with Gailey recruits. Since then, his own players show he can’t recruit and / or coach them up.

When you do finally fire him, think of the disaster it will be for the next coach to have to adapt this lack of talent that was recruited to run a high school offense. Years of crap to come!

The D was great up to the last minute. Don’t go all postal on the D. If Tech plays like that from here on in, we may beat a team or 2 we ’shouldn’t’ and win those we should.
Decision-making is a large part of a QB’s job and Tevan made a whole bunch of good ones and 1 very bad one. But he threw the ball on-target, on time with no wobbling turkeys.
I’d take this of a good sign of a very good year.
On the other hand, it appears that good D on the other side can and does stop the offense. Being married to a certain offensive scheme just doesn’t work forever and that’s a very real problem for PJ. He has the hubris of the ‘never wrong’ and will go down before giving up. If fans can see it, op-coaches can too. The pure vanilla needs a little chocolate syrup, nuts and whipped cream to be truly unstoppable. But PJ will have none of it. The players deserve better and the fans demand it.

He wasn’t trying to throw the ball away. He was hoping his duck pass would somehow land in a gt players hands. He had time to throw it away and even then, you don’t have to. Take the sack and kick the fg. He’s a senior playing like a freshman. I am amazed the coach stuck with him the entire game with how awful he played, aside from the last drive in regulation. That was typical gt football. Bonehead plays lead to a loss.

As a Dawg fan evaluating Tech last night objectively, The entire short comings of Tech goes back to the defense…as always. There are 7 or 8 guys on that D who could play for just about anyone, but it really falls off from there. I’m beginning to think that defense is an after thought with Johnson. Scary part, if Tech had a deep defense, they would be Top 5 or so every year.

Not a Tech fan here, but CPJ is part of the problem. While he didn’t lose the game last night his conceited view of his offense and his teams inability to pass the ball costs him games. When the offense struggles to move the ball, he always blames the players inability to execute instead of looking in the mirror and saying to himself, “What can I do to improve this situation?” He’s a lot like visor boy at Carolina, in his mind he’s a genius and he’s always right so if something doesn’t work it has got to be someone else’s fault.

First – a disclaimer – a dawgs fan that sometimes roots for Tech. I have to say the the offense just does not get the job done. The problem is when teams have weeks to prepare (as VT did as well as bowl opponents), then Tech just cannot move the ball consistently. The passing game is pathetic. Johnson may not be the major issue, but his quirky offense is at the very least a part of the problem. They also cannot recruit like other major programs – come on – its an engineering school that requires everyone to take Calculus. Ridiculous – put in some academic program that the football team can major in and stay in school. (industrial managment does not qualify) OR accept what Tech is – will have very good years every once in a blue moon and win an ACC championship – Btw – VT did not look worth a crap either. And neither did the dawgs. (except Gurley)

Thought GT needed to score 24 to win this one, almost had another win against a top 20 team.

If TW throws to the middle of the field in overtime on the goalline, probably have a W.

Also should have run the clock all the way down at the end, although a 7 minute drive was impressive. Should have double covered their WR track guy at the end. And that 4th down conversion with 13 seconds was pure luck.

Lost a game that after fighting back all night should not have lost. Unless GT can find some coverage guys, will have the same thing every game. Cannot stop the pass. If all Tech has in secondary is #6 Sweeting, we are in a world of trouble. Had a personal foul called on him, didn’t even know where the ball was on the last VT TD, and if the receiver had dropped it, pass interference was called. Washington did a fair job toward the end, but he looked awful tenative on some of his decision making. If your defense can’t hold someone for 44 seconds, knowing they are going to throw the ball, you deserve to lose. My best guess is a 6-6 or maybe 7-5 season. Let me see if I got this right: We lose in overtime in a road game against a ranked team that’s 65-11 at home since 2000 and has one of the top 5 defenses in the nation this year; meanwhile our top running back is out with an injury and two of our starting safeties are out with an injury and a suspension — and most of you guys are ready to throw the team and the coaches under the bus. I hope the people in your life treat your efforts better than you treat this team.

VT had 8 months to prepare for this game, and the top 16 team ONLY own by a fieldgoal in overtime, the rest of the 11 teams on the schedule will have 1 week to get ready for the triple option. Got to like that.

you figure UGA gave up 83 yards rushing to Buffalo’s QB, so TWash should run for 150 against UGA. And once the guys get back form injuries, should have no problem putting up a lot of rushing yards, UGA gave up 83 yards rushing for the Buffalo QB, AND over 100 yards to Buffalo’s rb, they’re AWFUL at run defense, just can’t stop anyone with all those 300-350 lb slugs on the dline, they’re too slow and out of shape.

VT will have a new HC before GT. I am not sure football means as much to the GT admin as it does to others. Coach Beamer looks tired and sounds even worse.

I thought the VT defense did their job but the offense failed to get the points needed for a close win. Forget holding teams to less than 14 points with the type of talent that goes to GT.

Didn’t think Grantham did wonders for UGA against Buffalo. The GT defense made things very tough for No 16 VT.

UGA has now been exposed, they can’t stop a mobile QB. Look out for Missouri, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and GT. All 4 teams should get 100 yards rushing out fo their QB on that sluggish dline.

As a UGA grad and loyalist I hope he stays as long as JoePa did at State Pen Granted JoePa had a much better record, but as a citizen of the great state of Georgia this arrogant, self-serving coach who belittles his players in plain view of fans and other athletes on a regular basis and embarrasses everyone around has got to go!
The best news for my Tech friends will be when Dan Radakovich bids CPJ farewell!

CPJ – If you are determined to stick with the current scheme of B-Back dives for short yardage and you are not satisfied with what you are getting from that position, why not increase the mass of the running back crashing into the interior of the line? Hunt-Days looks okay for a freshman at MLB, so why not move Drummond BACK to B-back, where he started? According to the roster, Drummond is 23 pounds heavier that Sims, 30 pounds heavier than Perkins and 37 pounds heavier than Lasky. We know Drummond’s mass, so, if his acceleration is on par with the others, maybe he can generate more force going into the middle to move the pile a bit further…

Definitely disappointed in the loss and, especially, letting them tie it up with 44 seconds left and the ball of the VT 25 yard line. TW’s bonehead pass in OT was not the best either.

That being said, have to realize this is the first game of the year and that, on paper, we should not have been in a position to win it. I felt good about the defensive play for the most part and had mixed feelings about the offensive play. The defense should get better as we move through the season and get back those that were missing. It still needs work and it will be interesting to see how some of those sitting in the wings progress.

As for the offense, looked like the the first game of the season for the most part. I was encouraged by the lack of turnovers for the first game and how they started to mix in the pistol and a bit more passing late. That should also improve as the season moves along. There were also relatively few penalties. TW missed alot of reads though and that was discouraging.

All in all and in honest reflection, I am not negative on the performance for a first game effort. On Vegas terms, we beat the spread and I won my bet. I could not have said the same if I had placed money on UGA.

A note to all of you Yellow Jackets out there:

I am now president of the Athens chapter of the Paul Johnson Fan Club.

You would not believe how the club is growing. We had to move the meetings from the IHOP to the Western Sizzlin because of the crowds.

We love Paul Johson in Athens. Don’t you guys ever fire him.

Ignor the fact that he cannot recruit at the 1A level. I mean face it, ever since Chan Gaileys players left, the only decent guys you have had are the ones that transferred in because they wanted to be closer to home – or were run off by their origional schools.

Yep, Paul Johnson will soon have Tech as the strongest 1AA team in America. You might even venture to schedule Georgia Southern without the fear of being beat.

We sort of look at Paul Johnson as the coaching equivalent of Reggie Ball at Tech. And you know how much we revere Reggie.

Reggie!!! Reggie!! Reggie!! Tevin!!! Tevin!!! Tevin!!!

So you guys take good care of Paul Johnson because we want him in Atlanta for a loooong time.

Once again, when it is needed the defense can not get the job done. The offense looked tenative and unsure most of the night. I can see us not winning an ACC game this year, other than maybe Duke.

Charles Perkins: whiffed on a block on a key 3rd down. Which got him benched.

Since they deleted my pervious post….What do you Tech fans think? You can’t use a high school offense in COLLEGE football. No serious athlete is going to come play OPTION football and risk getting their knees blown out. On top of that, your chop blocking Oline is pitiful. No one in their right mind would want to play at Tech. Add the neigborHOOD that your school is in, crappy 1920’s stadium, lack of hot girls and the worst FRATS in college football and you have a big ol’ ZERO as far as recruiting goes.

CPJ said this was the best O-line he’s had since he came to GT. Well the best he’s had got man handled all night by VT D-line. On a positive note, I did see some improvements on defense. The offense was just plain horrible. Tevin threw the ball much better but he missed the reads on the option plays way too many times. There were more missed blocking assignments than I could count. As for Sweeting, I’d run him until he pukes and then run him some more for the way he played!

The REAL problem is that CPJ is not respected by his fellow coaches, players or potential recruits at all, and that hurts big time in recruiting 4/5* players. Evidence #1: at the end of the half, with 4 seconds left on the clock, Beamer’s VT took a knee. ANY reasonable and respectful coach would never call a timeout when your opponent took a knee with 4 sec left, but that is exactly what CPJ did. Classless, and that’s why you cannot win the big game or get the top recruits.
