This was one big play -- a fourth-quarter touchdown -- yielded by Rod Sweeting. (AP photo)
1. The Georgia Tech defense did its job — for 59 minutes and 16 seconds. Until Virginia Tech’s final drive, this had the makings of a night of deliverance for the besieged Al Groh. Instead the defensive coordinator will be asked how a unit that had made the Hokies work hard to achieve not very much allowed receiver Corey Fuller to run free twice in the final 44 seconds, the second time on fourth-and-4 from the Georgia Tech 47.
2. The Georgia Tech running game still isn’t what it was. Granted, Virginia Tech can play some D of its own. But the long gain was again missing. The most expansive gain by any of the three B-backs was for eight yards. (Remember when Jonathan Dwyer would take it 60?) The longest gain by an A-back was 13 yards. The longest gain by any Jacket, be it rushing or passing, was quarterback Tevin Washington’s 22-yard scramble in the third quarter. That’s not good enough.
3. The Georgia Tech kicking game was not at all terrible. Virginia Tech, which once prided itself on its special teams, saw its punter fumble a snap and its placekicker miss from 38 yards. The Jackets, by way of contrast, punted well enough — Sean Poole averaged 40 yards on seven kicks — and made every field goal. And even Paul Johnson felt relieved, albeit only momentarily, when David Scully kicked the ball out of the end zone after the Jackets had taken the lead with 44 seconds remaining. It was only two years ago that Georgia Tech lost here on a kickoff-return touchdown inside the final three minutes.

UGA class of ‘93 here. When it aint against UGA …. I root 4 Tech. That being said, Paul Johnson’s boys came close last night…. bummer. I think all the Techies who criticize him need to remember one thing…. this Offense is capable of scoring on any team, anywhere, at any time. UGA was lucky to have an extra bye week to prepare for them last year. It’s like facing a knuckle baller every year at the end of the season- you never know what to expect. Good luck jackets! Kicking game ok but how about a squib kick on the final kickoff to make VT field it and run time off the clock…..defense pretty good but some really poor tackling at critical moments…….. And I dont think VT’s QB was that good…….well see……….agree the option offense looked tired…….no real explosiveness or power bursts……and, as happens when the option stumbles, GT turned to the pass and their WR’s, while big, seemed lost and slightly immobile…….the RB’s were the best pass catching threat……..time to move bj bostic and ?zenon to flanker/wr and have a real passing game……..and spend the entire week on fundamentals, blocking and tackling and find a horse to run up the middle….have a nice day……and remember, give the damn ball to orwin

A note to all of you Yellow Jackets out there:
I am now president of the Athens chapter of the Paul Johnson Fan Club.
You would not believe how the club is growing. We had to move the meetings from the IHOP to the Western Sizzlin because of the crowds.
We love Paul Johson in Athens. Don’t you guys ever fire him.
Ignor the fact that he cannot recruit at the 1A level. I mean face it, ever since Chan Gaileys players left, the only decent guys you have had are the ones that transferred in because they wanted to be closer to home – or were run off by their origional schools.
Yep, Paul Johnson will soon have Tech as the strongest 1AA team in America. You might even venture to schedule Georgia Southern without the fear of being beat.
We sort of look at Paul Johnson as the coaching equivalent of Reggie Ball at Tech. And you know how much we revere Reggie.
Reggie!!! Reggie!! Reggie!!
So you guys take good care of Paul Johnson because we want him in Atlanta for a loooong time.
Sincerely, your fellow Paul Johnson fans in Athens.

The mistake in the final 0:44 was not taking any timeouts of our own. The GT defense was clearly gassed and VT was running a hurry-up. When the clock was already stopped by VT after going out of bounds, GT should have used a TO and let the defense get organized. Every time. They were clearly on their heels despite some good stops. I saw it as a coaching error.

GT will never win a big game w/Tevin Washington at QB! Synjyn Days, maybe Vad Lee, somebody who plays like they want to win and who actually leads on every play. Tevin’s like a robot out there, like a “utility player” on a baseball team – somewhat mediocre, can get the job done but is not going to be the big difference maker. We need a leader and a winner running the team.
With Orin Smith out of the game, we have no play-makers. What happened to Zach Laskey? Playing well, then disappears???? He might have actually blocked somebody!!!
Defense looked better, looked really good at times. Rod Sweeting needs to quit hotdogging it and he has to learn to turn around and look for the ball on deep passes.
Time to go w/Synjyn or possibly Vad Lee, time to do it now. (Mark, didn’t you write an article stating this same thing about a month or two ago? Wish PJ was listening.) Sticking with Tevin kind of reminds me of Chan sticking with Reggie ……… and going down with the ship ……….

To the Tech folks:
Why is this offense not running the true “triple option”?
The QB runs down the line of scrimmage, reads the tackle, keeps or pitches. Also can run reverses out of that.
Am I missing something or is that something GT does not run that we are used to seeing from an option team?

Come on guys, back off the ledge. As noted by others previously, we lost in OT on the road to the #16 team in the country. Let’s see how we do over the next few weeks. If we are 2-3 at the end of September, then we can talk about a lost season.
I will keep hoping someone will rest the QB position from TW. Not fair to put it all on him, but the TO just seems “slower” when he runs it. We have to have someone capable of making the defenders pay for cheating up on the dive and pitch, and a big part of that is decision making in real-time.

Though parts of the D showed much improvement, the D-backfield was again ineffective, albeit playing w/ handicap due to suspensions & injury. Sweeting got burned on a totally defensible TD pass (after hot-dog strutting around earlier), & lumbering not-sharp Logan Thomas was allowed several critical late-game completions to stage the come-from-behind “upset”.
Yes, the Jackets gave the victory away again. We are good at this.

Wasn’t this year’s objective to “finish strong” & “seal the deal”, learning from previous seasons?
And what about coaching? OT strategy, Puh-leeze!! TW did the only thing you absolutely DON’T DO in an OT scenario. And RB/WR blocking?

PJ’s potential fatal flaw ( its only the first game) is his absolute commitment to the option without a truly viable passing game to keep the defense honest or bail the team out if they fall behind…..superior, fast, aggressive defenses can shut down the option, unless tech’s O line is superior(it wasn’t) or you have tremendous talent at QB or RB……..but PJ thinks the “system” ( the option) will succeed regardless of talent differential…….maybe it can if executed perfectly, but GT had woeful blocking on the outside and the interior……tech was in the game at the end yesterday only because of great defensive play and/or a poor VT offense……you pick……..I like the option…..I like the breakaway runs and it can be an equalizer with great teams….but I think in today’s college football you need a little balance……like a passing game

Everyone knows that Tech’s wide receivers better damn-well block on the corners, if the A-backs are to get running room. I saw a lot of poor blocking from new receivers, not to mention poor separation and route running. If Sims blocks the linebacker for Days’ run, he probably scores. We are missing that BIG B-back who can take on the linebacker and win.

It is only one game and I am sure Coach Johnson will work to get better. One thing I did notice is the lack of a explosive back like you usually have. VT was 7.5 point favorites last night. GT lost by 3 in overtime. A little perspective is in order. VT has a really good defense and GT did not move the ball like they can. They had a poor first game. They will get better. As far as teams now having this offense “figured out”. That is crazy. Ga. Southern has been using this offense for over for close to 30 years (minus the VanGorder debacle). Teams like Furman and App. St. (very good teams in IAA) have not figured out how to stop it. Before you say that is against lesser talented, IAA opponents, remember that they also have lesser talented, 1AA players too. By the way, I’m more of a Georgia fan than a Tech fan. But I really respect CPJ. He is a great coach.

Not sure why there’s all this “sky is falling” comments. How many games have we’ve played thus far? Ah yes, ONE! That one game was on the road in Blacksburg against Virginia Tech. VT is definitely one of the top programs in the ACC. Actually, its the only one that’s been consistently good. We went there and lost in OT. Of course a loss is a loss but it wasn’t a blow out loss. Our team overall did well. Just couldn’t finish them off at the end and let them get back.

SillyMutts…..they thought they needed to hire a guy who could beat teams with scheme because they realized they were never going to win on pure talent…..I think that’s pretty much accepted. As a whole GT is never going to beat teams based on “stars” from recruiting services so they decided to go the route of the academies. It’s a great system at the academies I just wonder if long term it will work in a major conference….not because of the scheme but because of two other factors:
1. The level of talent on the opposition is much better
2. Every nucklehead playing high school football thinks he can make it to the NFL…obviously that’s not the case but that doesn’t change the fact they believe it…..other teams will tell recruits this isn’t a system that will develop you for the NFL. Probably not the case but it will be used as a selling point against GT.

1) There’s no doubt that VT has one of the top ten defenses this year in college FB.
2) GT offense did not play particularly well, that was obvious. GT should never have played a top 20 team without a warm game or two.
3) It was bad scheduling except for that ESPN has the purse strings.
4) GT defense is and will get much better as the season goes along.
5) It wouldn’t have made any difference who was coaching GT last night. GT just didn’t have enough experienced personnel, defensively or offensively to beat VT this early in the season.
6) I’m no coach or self proclaimed expert but it did appear TW,QB, was making bad reads when he kept giving the ball to the B back. CPJ wasn’t making a bad read, it was TW.
7) I do fault CPJ for giving VL or SD a shot at providing some “spark” to the offense. It appeared to me that TW was a step slow all night. Or more probably the VT defense was a step quicker.
9) Poor tackling during the last 44 seconds cost GT the game.
10) GT WILL SHOW IMPROVEMENT GAME TO GAME!!!

The OT interception is a moot point. VT would have scored a TD. Where we lost the game was the final 44 seconds of regulation. How does a team play great defense the entire game then let them go that distance in 44 seconds. We (GT) just seem to be the born losers of college football. Don’t you get the sense, things never fall for us? We are good, better than average, but will never ascend to the top. Sometimes I wish we were mediocre or below average every year (like a ‘Duke’) – then we wouldn’t get so down after games like this – because they would be expected.

Mark, I agree. I will say that Va Tech had WRs open on other drives, but they either dropped the ball or a penalty negated the catch. Va Tech’s offense really didnt look any sharper than Tech.
Good point about the Tech offense though. The big play has been missing ever since Gailey’s recruits left. It’s odd to think about it, but this offense needs to hit the big runs. It is reliant on the big play, without which Johnson would never have beaten UGA in 2008 or many of the teams he beat the first couple of years.

@GT Bob—-at least Chan gets an opportunity. Paul Johnson can’t even sniff an opportunity in the NFL.
That doesn’t mean anything. The NFL isn’t a natural progression for all college coaches and Chan is only getting a chance because he has been an NFL coach the majority of his career. It doesn’t make him a better college coach then CPJ.

Sad reality
Buffalo has a QB and RB better than Tech’s. The running back might be the 2nd or 3rd best RB UGA will face all year behind Lattimore and possibly Zac Stacy. Buffalo has an OL averaging 320 pounds which is a better OL than Tech’s.

dawgfan,
To believe that UGA was anything but pathetic against a Buffalo team that went 5-19 over the last 2 yrs to put 350 yds on that top defense everyone is bragging about. Hell, even the fans there started to boo and left before the 4th qtr started. I can’t wait to watch Mizz run up and down the field on UGA. Hopefully they’ll win and shut your faces up. They should have dropped in the polls…and don’t talk about an SEC schedule because it doesn’t exist for UGA this season. The only tough teams they play is USC & FLA. Those teams are even the tops teams in the SEC. Did you watch the games this weekend. By the way UGA is always overrated in preseason polls. Every year it’s been proven.

Yes, I am a UGA alumnus. So what. GT is a state of Georgia school, so I viewed last night’s pathetic exhibition of low level, small ball. GT did not win vs Va Tech for the second year in a row. Neither team last night had even a decent Offense. Neither one did. Both are lousy teams with NO TALENT and KY and MSU and Vandy and about every other SEC school would stomp both.
GT could have won that game, however. Va Tech is a lackluster offense with a big tight end playing QB, with no passing skills. Yet, in the clutch, Va Tech won by throwing the ball and GT’s NFL style D, designed by AL Groh, crumbled. He has been a disaster for CPJ.
Coach Paul Johnson is now on the 2012 Coaching Hot Seat. GT has lost three or four games in a row now!!!

Johnson better take a hard look at giving Days more playing time – Washington is not the answer at TO QB.
Too slow to make the read, too slow to react, too slow, period. Average arm at best.
Johnson has hitched his wagon to Washington, and GT will suffer for it all year.

@ Reality Stinks….try Wikopedia…In Jones’ sophomore season, Tech powered through their schedule and won the ACC. The four game unbeaten streak in 1989 extended all the way through 1990 and into the 1991 Citrus Bowl. The key victory in the streak was a huge 41-38 come from behind upset victory over then No.1 ranked Virginia in Charlottesville before a nationwide TV audience. Tech demolished Nebraska 45–21 in the 1991 Citrus Bowl, finishing the season 11–0–1, and earning a share of the 1990 National Title with the Colorado Buffaloes.[24][25]

3. Special Teams – much improved and looked very good. I can not understand why we STILL can not find a kicker that can kick every kick off through the end zone (we had one) when I see high school kids do it every Friday night from the 40 yd line (just 5 yds closer)
2. Running game will get better. You can not schedule this offense against a good defense the first game of the year (did you see the ND / Navy game?). This offense needs a weak (FCS) defense the first game and build up from there. The triple option timing, assignments, etc. are way more complicated than passing schemes and you need some games to develop.
1. Defense – front seven played very well, at least Thomas did not run over us like he did last year. The secondary must learn to trust their teammates and to do JUST THEIR JOB. They were caught peeking on both touchdowns. DO YOUR JOB and let the front seven worry about the run! If Groh can fix this (getting Young and Holton back will help), I am very optimistic about our defense.

Why did tech fans think the jackets was going to win the game i said a year ago TW is not going to beat a good football team he is not talented enough to get the job done. How many 3rd and 5s did they have and he can only pick up 4 yards how many times did he miss read option plays. The said thing about it the head coach cant see it, I can already see next year team cpj is going say we have good team but qbs are young so why dont you get them exspoure now they cant be worse than TW!

Reggie was at least D1 material. TW, although he has a heart as big as any, is D2 at best. He would have a problem starting at Georgia Southern. Our coaches have failed in recruiting. TW is the best they could recruit to play QB. Pathetic. This kid would not play QB anywhere at the D1 level except at GT. Completely unacceptable …. IMHO.
