Live from Tech-Tech: Rain (and an upset) could be coming

Blacksburg, Va. — Here’s great news. There’s a flash flood warning in effect here until midnight, with a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms at 7 p.m. (Kickoff is at 8, or whenever ESPN decides it’s good and ready.) We mention this because …
Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech were set to play here on Aug. 27, 2000, which was so long ago that George Godsey was Tech’s quarterback and some guy named Vick was playing for the Hokies. The game never came off. A savage storm that Sunday night forced the game to be canceled, as opposed to postponed. In ESPN lore, the memory lingers because Lee Corso’s rental car was struck by lightning. (Without him inside, let’s stipulate.)
For more on the non-game, here’s esteemed colleagues Ken Sugiura’s recounting of it. But I’m not worried about a repeat of the washout, for these reasons:
1. The forecast — and I’ve been watching — has actually improved throughout the day, and as I type it’s only partly cloudy. (It was, I should note, a weird drive up from Greensboro. It poured in Winston-Salem and was so foggy at 2 p.m. in the Virginia mountains that it seemed like night. Then it got sunny.)
2. My rental car is so small — it’s a compact roughly the size of the water closet on an airplane — that I’m pretty sure any lightning would miss it.
As previously discussed, this seems the biggest game in what stands as a massive season for Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson. As previously mentioned, I like the Jackets to win. I have found absolutely no one else in the media who seconds that emotion, but I’m accustomed to that.
If it should rain hard and/or long, it could well hurt (Ga.) Tech and its pitch-it-around option game more, but those sorts of forecasts are problematic. (Va.) Tech figures to be the better passing team, so inclement weather could curtail the Hokies, too. And if the ball gets so slick nobody can hang on, there’s no real handicapping that.
I’ve liked (Ga.) Tech’s chances all summer because I think this looms as a bigger platform for the Jackets than for the Hokies. VPI, as we old folks used to call this school, is expected to win by a touchdown. VPI is ranked; GT is not. VPI has beaten GT four of the past five years. Give the hunger edge to the visitors.
But really, who knows? Georgia Tech could win, or it could lose, or the game could be rained out. Hey, it happened once.
And whatever happens tonight, I’d appreciate it if you’d hang around for all the fun and frolic. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

Mark, was there for Chan’s 51-7 massacre (I was actually in Athens for his other one too – I deserve something for that). Was also there for Cooper Taylor’s bogus helmet-to-helmet call that cost us that one. Just seems we’ve been snake-bit more times than not against these guys. Strong conference or not, let’s face it – there’s only 4 teams that could represent this conference proudly at the end of the year and two of them play tonight (FSU / CLEM being the other two). Until somebody else steps up on a consistent basis (Miami) this will continue to be one of the BIG games each year in the ACC.

Tech, and how about your other pick where you have Georgia winning the SEC championship, and playing in the national championship??? It’s going to be a blitzkrieg…run blitz’s, pass blitz’s. Turnovers could be the difference. Get loose balls (yours and VA Tech’s); don’t try to intercept their passes but knock them down and lock up your tackles; focus when passes are thrown to you – good breaks on routes and catch with your hands.

The same guy that is picking Tech to win tonight also picked Georgia to win the SEC championship and play for the national championship. Did you see Georgia yesterday? I thought he did, but he looks to be much bigger than Stinchcomb,who was a lineman at UGA. Maybe old Tommy has gotten the “middle age spread”, but he is not quite old enough for that. Did Chan win that game in 06′ or Megatron? (j/k) I make an error every now and then before we go too much further………. Some trolls here will hope to see GT “LOSE” the game while their lone tooth remains “LOOSE” in their mouths. (Dawg Bite and other well-wishers, thanks for the support and congrats on the promising new RB) The rags I’ve read from Roanoke/Salem all like to mention how Bud Foster held the Jackets to negative yds rushing in the 4th qtr last year but ignore the fact that we had that game just about won until Jeremiah’s late hit on Thomas. Bud Foster is nationally respected as one of the ‘gurus’ as a defensive coordinator. I’m hoping and thinking we need to win tonight to squash two myths: (1) Bud Foster is the best DC in the conference and (2) Good to Great programs always win when having more than a week to prepare for CPJ’s offense. Bring it home Jackets. Called in sick tomorrow so either way, this is going to be fun.

Mark — Serious question, no snark intended. Why do you laud Paul Johnson’s coaching intellect, given that he has his offense has no original contributions or innovations. That is to say, he is running an offense that is largely unchanged from which Darrel Royal was running (w/ Emory Bellard as the OC) back in the late 60s. Seriously, it >90% the same exact 5-6 plays that dominated the CFB landscape in the late 60s and early 70s. It is perfectly fine to run in today’s CFB, as it is niche and gives teams something very different to prepare against and defend. However, his lack of interest and passion for recruiting, defense and special teams makes runs very counter to the cerebral coach meme.

I know you and Coach Johnson absolutely hate this BUT is appears to be true – unless the Yellow Jackets are playing a practice game llike next week against PC, teams with more than one week to prepare seem to have the Yellow Jackets’ number. It would be interesting to see what the Yellow Jackets’ record is against BCS opponents who have more than one week to prepare. I know they have lost every bowl game in the Johnson era.
The “perfect storm” is brewing for the UGA game this year – they get to practice against the Yellow Jackets’ offense when they play Georgia Southern prior to the Yellow Jackets’ visit to Athens. This might really be ugly this year .

Agreed on the Wake Forest game.
The score would have been higher if they had just taken turns trying to kick field goals from their own 30 yard lines… Come to think of it, that would actually have been more entertaining, as well.
That game was the reason I was OK with Chan getting fired eventually. I thought he was a good guy and a good coach but maybe not the right fit for GT. I also thought back to that game when it was announced that PJ was coming with the Triple Option. I remember thinking that we would never again have to watch this team trade field goals with a team like Wake Forest. I believe that gem of foresight has held since.

I was in New York on vacation for our big win against VT in Blacksburg, was a total domination. I was also fortunate that there are GT fans all over the country (and internationally, but that’s another story); we were on vacation staying with one of my wife’s college friends and her then fiance. The wife and her friend went shopping, leaving me and the fiance at a sports bar in downtown NYC; about 5 minutes into the first quarter, he disappeared and I didn’t see him again until about an hour after the game. Luckily, there was an entire table of GT fans there and I spent my time watching and celebrating with them. I found out afterwards (after the fiance stayed absent for large parts of the weekend) that he was in the grips of a cocaine addiction which eventually cost him his cushy Wall Street gig, so I was dumped while he took the opportunity to score.
Anyway, just a GT – VT anecdote that comes to mind every time these two play. And I agree that the GT WF championship game was an atrocity to watch, was so ready for Chan to go after watching that I couldn’t stand it.
Jackets will feast on some turkey tonight. GO JACKETS!!!!

I see where this game is televised nationally. Most people outside the southeast and the ACC have never even heard of Georgia Tech so at least they will get some exposure. As far as the game goes, Virginia Tech beats Georgia Tech easily, probably by about three touchdowns.

Good luck Tech. I am huge uga fan but i love seeing georgia boys excell in sports. I think alot of paul johnson he may be @ss but he is a heck of a coach. I cant wait to see how Zack Laskey does tonight i have known him since he was 13 and he is a great young man. I started working with him when he was 13 all the way till he graduated. Why he only had scholarships from the academies and tech i will never know. Go look at his senior yr at stars mill and you will see that he was one of the top backs in georgia that yr and every coach that has ever coached will tell you he is a monster in the wt. room very unassuming young man. He has legit 4.4 speed and like i said is strong as all hell. I hope he has a great game and when he was recruited i told yall everyone will know who he is by time he leaves tech. I expect him to leave tech as one of the fan’s favorite bc that how he is. A team leader and someone who will give you everything he has. Trust me this kid has a huge chip on his shoulder and he is also a great linebacker which is his original position got moved to rb due to his blazing speed.

Tech fans yall keep an eye on Zack Laskey tonight i have worked with him since he was 13 and he is a hard worker and one of those kids who gives you everything he has. The young man has legit 4.4 speed and his senior yr. he was easily one of the top backs in the state. i have no clue as to why his only offers came from service academies and tech or why he was rated a 2star. Neither the offensive nor defensive lines look particularly good so far, and if the offense can’t stay on the field longer, then our defense will be exhausted before halftime. It’s still early, but so far it’s pretty depressing.

i want for the tech and uga series to be like the old fsu and florida series (mid 90’s) where everyone is watching it bc both teams are ranked so high. With all the talents in state there is no reason for that not to happen. Look at what the georgia high school teams did out of state this past weekend we killed every team we played from florida, alabama and s.c. I think one team lost and that score was very close and it was not one of elite teams like the one it was playing from the other state but the score was still close. I think Georgia high school football is as good as it gets. Texas might have bigger stadiums and wt rooms but our teams can hang with them. Cali and Florida might have speed but so do our kids and i think our high school coaches are better especially from watching grayson play miami central and Camden play that florida team both teams were better coached and we had way more speed. Camden won like 57-10 or something and Grayson was like 35-3 to a team that was suppose to be the best in the Country. Miami Central was not a very well coached team just an extremely talented team when it met a team of equal talent the better coaching prevailed. I am not a grayson fan just saying what i saw. Griffin Bears are my team more kids in the pros than any high school program in the state.

Paul Johnson offfense is a fundamentally sound offense…..if you have the talent up front to run it.
I will say it now early in the first quarter of the first game of the season. If GT does not win a ton of games this season he will be gone. The fans will not come to games to a cloud of dust option plays and a defense that does not stop the run or the pass and sometimes both.
After earning my degree from Alabama, I got an engineering degree from Tech, and as I sit here today I am proud of one of my teams and having doubts about the other one, you can guess which one I have my doubts about.

Wow those are some ugly GT uniforms. I am no insect expert but pretty sure bees build hives with honeycomb chambers and yellow jackets live in big paper nests in the ground. So are they going to be the GT Bees from now on? What happened to those great gold helmets from the late 50s and 60s I used to see when I ushered many games with the Boy Scouts. Lou Holtz was a heck of coach in his time, he is a wonderful motivational speaker today, but his opinions and biases always trump the realities of the game today. I really respect him but we all have to take what he says with a grain of salt as he seems to have an agenda to his ramblings. Take USC( Carolina) he will never pick against them, talk them up and do not even bring up the Fighting Irish he will have them playing the BCSCG with a 4 loss season.

No neither team has a great Defense. Both offenses are that bad. CPJ their is a reason TWO teams in FBS run this offense. It gets you to 7-5, maybe 8-4 and a bowl trip to El Paso or Shreveport…Tevin is a joke, if you cannot throw at all, the safeties/LB/Cheerleaders/Parking attendants are going to stack the line. I predict Paul Johnson will be successful….after he is fired and gets another job with Texas State Valley CC or if he is real lucky, a job in the CFL

Whoever this cornerback is by the name of Sweeney this guy SUCKS big time and he is going to get toasted every Sat. He cant tackle or cover. Also is it me or do the GTech running backs block like girls? They have missed so many blocks the entire game. When Dyer was at Tech he would clean a line backers clock with a block, these running backs block like they are afraid of contact.

The backs just look slow to me, maybe I am overreacting! For this offense to be effective you have to have a quick qb, quick running backs, a qb who is a better than average thrower, a sound o line and 1 big recieving threat down the field. Tech has none of that!

LMAO at the clock management. Run 20 seconds, then use a timeout. So now VT gets the ball back and only has to make 1 first down to lock up the win. And even if they don’t GT gets the ball back with less than a minute and a half left.

No pressure on the QB that last drive at all. Groh finally looked like a halfway decent DC and then he proved he has no business coaching division 1 football. When CPJ said that he was coming back this year, I didn’t renew my tickets. I can’t stomach more of CPJ and his awful play calling and Groh now having a clue how to blitz. Looke like 7-5 and another bowl loss since Tech teams tend to give up after losses like this.

Maybe. I would put GT right up there with South Carolina or Georgia, definitely ahead of the rest of the East. I would put them behind Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas. But the other guys? The VT kicker was convicted of a crime in the off season, sentenced to 12 months in jail with all but 10 days suspended and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service. At any other school in America that would earn said player at least a one game suspension. Not at VT though. Beamer, you are a hypocrite.

Don’t know what Washington was doing on that INT. . . maybe the VT safety knocked him a little senseless 2 plays before. . . that would be the only defense because that was a terrible decision.
Thought tech’s defense played well, but damn, VT made some really stupid calls. . what were they doing on that final drive before OT with the two throws in the flats?? But you give up 17 points, you have to think you should win.

I like how everyone is blaming Groh. Tech only scored 17 and held VT to 17 in regulation. Doesn’t sound like a defensive problem to me. CPJ’s offense is what it is…terrible. If you hold the other team to 17, than your defense did the job. Why couldn’t CPJ’s incredible offense score more than 17. Once again, he is the only Div 1 coach who runs the triple option exclusively. What a joke. He needs to go.

Ah. The first of many losses to come. This should have been lopsided, but VT refused to capitalize on field position on almost every occasion. Their QB was very inaccurate until the end of the game. Trip-Op doesn’t work when teams have time to prepare. Haven’t you guys figured this out yet?

The defense kept us from getting blown out! All the speed on this team are on the defensive side of the ball. CPJ and his grind it out offense is totally devoid of playmakers. They are all gone and now he can’t recruit that type of talent on the offensive side of the ball. His stubborn refusal to change will never give us anything better than an average team at best.

Im tired of hearing how bad Tech recruiting is. Its really hard to recruit 5 star athletes when most of them all have one of the following:
1. 1.5 GPA or lower
2. < 600 SAT score (old test)
3. 1 or more felony convictions
4. Nick Saban paying for their high school coach
5. unwillingness to go to class… EVER

The genius’s Offense really only scored 10 in regulation, the fumbled punt snap gave us the ball deep in Va. Tech territory (maybe the 22-yd line?), so in reality GT’s offense only drove the ball down the field twice all game long for 1 TD & 1 FG.
Yet CPJ still spouts that extra time has no effect on his offense.

i don’t know what’s more disappointing: the interception tevin threw, or the fact that our defense couldn’t hold vpi out of field goal range for 44 seconds.
reminds me a lot of the utah bowl game – i felt then like we invented ways to lose that one, and same thing here.
think we can still have a solid year though, liked what i saw tonight overall, just killer mistakes at the end in crunch time.

@ Jammers…don’t use that excuse. Other top academic institutions do it and are able to compete at a higher level and GT has done it before…1990. Since CPJ is the only coach in D1 to run the triple option exclusively…he is either smarter than all other coaches or he is an idiot. Haven’t seen much from the pup fans after they had to work so hard to beat that mighty Buffalo team….I guess Tech losing to a top 20 ranked team in their stadium proved more than y’all could handle. TW blew it with that INT, but he fought a tough VT defense. CPJ lost this game?! He made some gutsy calls in this game when most coaches would have punted the ball. I give props to VT for not giving up when they were down with 44 seconds to go in the game. I would’ve liked to leave there with a W, but I think both teams have reason for optimism….Go Tech!!!

Wasn’t referring to this game, it was in reference to a different post referring to CPJ recruiting. Frankly, what CPJ has done with the recruits is pretty damn good, he is taking what for all intents an purposes 3 star or lower hand me downs and making a bit of lemonade. Tech will never have the athletes other schools do. Only happens in a blue moon that we get a stud. Calvin Johnson for example. Pretty hard to argue that GT doesn’t get looked over in football by any 5 star talent.

I can’t say the loss doesn’t hurt, but overall I’m impressed with our team. We had a drive to kill the clock and score a TD with the game on the line, a big fiurth down conversion on a pass, a TD on a pass, and some nice rushing yards; oh, and the D played like a beast while missing three starters. All of these point to a good season on the Flats. Let’s go PJ and Al. LET’S GO JACKETS!

Unfortunately for Tech fans you are absolutely correct. CPJ hasn’t been able to recruit any play makers for the O. After Gailey’s recruits left he has nothing. Any recruit that has visions of an NFL career have no interest in that offense. The D is still able to get a few players from time to time, because they are playing an NFL type D.

As fans, we should be better than always blaming our academics. Other top academic schools seem to be able to recruit and perform better. We also have a business management program which the majority of our athletes enroll in for a reason. Yes, GT academics are hard, but so are Stanford, Southern Cal, Wisconsin, Ohio St, etc.

That was a tough loss. I am a UGA fan, but still pull for the hometown team when they aren’t head to head. Tech had some moments of brilliance, actually felt they were the more talented team on the field. What failed them was a lack of execution at key moments, be it defense in closing seconds, or of course bad decisions by a young QB in overtime. Tough way to start season with an ACC loss, even with a favorable schedule, am afraid GT looking at 4-5 losses this year.

This game makes us (GT) 2 – 6 over the last 6 games with competitive football teams. CPJ is in his fifth year as head coach and the program is in a tail spin when after 5 years improvement should be evident. CPJ and his TO has got to go; this program is a joke.

Hate to admit it but Tech’s losses in big games are the difference between 3-star and 5-star recruits. Tech just doesn’t have the game breakers that turn games around and as a result they have to play perfect games to win. That sack at the opportune time, an interception, a circus catch, thoe are great plays for Tech players but expected and common for the 5 stars at Bama, LSU, Clemson, FSU, Miami, Florida, and Georgia. I’m so use to seven and three Dodd and it seems it continues.

Not to knock on other schools, but really you are going to compare the difficulty of Tech to USC, Wisconson, Ohio St?
EVERYONE wants to go to Harvard right? Why don’t they get top tier talent? Why is the Ivy league not even in D1? Because athletes want to go where they don’t have to study. Yes I am frustrated at the constant letdown by tech lately but academics is indeed a factor in football. Those schools that did well in spite of it, come on man, you know how statistics work right? You went to Tech? There is always an outlier from time to time outside of standard deviation. Stanford, doormat for long time before Luck. Ohio St (see Tressel’s transgressions), Wisconson (wins no 1 party school year after year) Don’t even get me started on that. USC (where shall I begin? Who will they pay next?)

For most of the game the VT D knew what play was coming. They had at least a couple of defenders waiting wherever the ball went. Same old play calling by PJ. Even I knew what play was coming next…
Why doesn’t TW pitch the option? Maybe 1 out of 20 he will…The rest he tucks it and gets creamed. I appreciate him wanting to put the game on his shoulders & win…But he hurts the offense by not pitching. That’s where so many of the PJ big plays used to come from with Roddy, Dwyer, etc.
This should have been a W. Inexcusable to let VT back in after taking the lead 17-14.

So, yet another heartbreaking OT loss. This is becoming a worrying trend. Here’s the 5 main reasons for our defeat:
1. Bad blocking by the B-Back: Sims and Laskey completely missed a lot of the blocks we needed for the QB follow/iso play.
2. Horrible WRs: After one game, there still not a single WR on the roster with a career reception. They did not block well, did not get open at all, and were caught sleeping at critical moments (especially that last INT where the receiver could have at least prevented Kyle Fuller from grabbing the ball, if not make a genuine attempt at catching it).
3. Absurd playcalling by Washington: Barring that 4th quarter clutch play to convert the 4th down, Washington made overall poor decisions tonight. He wasn’t helped by the BBs, and since all the DBs were cheating up to the LOS, he should have passed way more, except there was nobody to throw to.
4. Great defensive play by VT: Credit to Bud Foster’s defense for not really giving us too many big plays.
5. Complacency: How the hell was VT allowed to drive 50 yards downfield with 44 seconds left?
Some positives to take away:
1. Great job by our defense for the most part.
2. Nice OL play; held its own against a great DL.
3. No special teams mess-ups.
4. Good games for Bostic, Godhigh, Hunt-Days, Cross, Watts, Young

Please don’t get rid of CPJ, the Bulldogs love him! Why?
1) he does not discriminate between 1 star and 5 star recruits.
2)he does not make outlandish statements, although he may be dullest man in college football.
3)CPJ’s may have the most exciting offense since Woody Hayes

Smoke and mirrors Jammers……that wasn’t about him not being qualified. Tech saw this kid play his senior season and wanted to go a different direction. We blogged about this after it all went down. UGA didn’t want him either after the fact.

Can we ALL agree that academics DOES IN FACT make a huge difference in a recruits mind? Schools like GT and vandy will never get a team full of 4 and 5 star athletes and must use those “smoke and mirrors” to beat teams. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I do agree CPJ cannot beat a decent team that has more than 2 weeks to prepare.
