KEITH LAW OF ESPN ON THE TRADE
“Atlanta gets marginally better for this year with the additions of Maholm and Johnson, but the Cubs land the best prospect they’re likely to obtain in this year’s trade market in exchange for two players they didn’t need.” — End quote.
July 31st, 20126:35 pm
Should have been Delgado + Vizcaino to san diego for chase headley and luke gregerson. or teheran for both
July 31st, 20126:38 pm
Folks, a Major League GM just made a trade for a one arm pitcher a a journey man.
Might as well been an IOU and a rotary phone. To top it off, he is still employed!
What Keith Law meant to write.
July 31st, 20126:40 pm
I don’t think Keith’s assessment should come as much of a surprise to anyone. In my opinion, if the Braves project Vizcaino to be a relief arm, even an elite arm, then they probably did just fine. If they still project him to stand up to starting then they paid too much for a marginal talent like Maholm. Frank Wren and his guys have a much better handle on that than do I so any more praise or criticism isn’t really appropriate. Or at least I think they have a handle on things. They have been known in recent time to test my faith.
July 31st, 20126:44 pm
I’m not going to lie: I thought — and still think — Vizcaino can be something special. But sometimes you’ve got to give up somebody with the potential to be really good to get what you need at the moment.
July 31st, 20126:59 pm
Vizcaino needed to develop a solid third pitch to become a formidable starter imo. Great pen arm for sure
July 31st, 20128:21 pm
I think Maholm can help us–Reed too. I hate giving up Vizcaino, but overall, not a bad trade. I’m really glad FW moved away from Dempster. Taking that jerk after the BS he pulled wouldn’t have gone over well with most Braves fans. Actually I think we may, in the long run, end up with the better pitcher.
July 31st, 20128:42 pm
I think Dempster is a fine enough pitcher but if Texas is expecting his good fortunes to continue in that ballpark, in the DH league, when he was already a little over his head in this league, I’m afraid they are in for some disappointment.

I’m pretty fed up with the growing number of videos that pass for a news story. how about some written word….please…
July 31st, 20129:46 pm
Alright folks! This is the third video I’ve seen of Mark Bradley o n here recently, and I think it’s time to take a collection cup to buy the poor boy a maid! in this video, toys are piled in the background, the kitchen counter is cluttered and a drawer is open. I know whenever I’m on a video conference from my home office, I ensure my surroundings are buttoned up. I guess that level of protocol doesn’t hold for Atlanta’s so-called media elite.

LH starter (premium)
3.74 ERA which puts him our #3 best starter
Hot hand the last 7 starts
Signed through next year – not a rental
RH bat hat has batted over .400 in a PH role (current over .300 avg)
All of this while keeing our 2 top prospects.

A bit off topic but what about playing the beginning sounds of, “It’s Closing Time” when Kimbrel enters the game? Anyone like that?
August 1st, 20126:26 am
Buzztech86, I think that may have crossed the line.
August 1st, 20126:37 am
this trade can be evaluated only in retrospect
August 1st, 20127:04 am
padre….so true, it takes awhile to evaluate a trade. The Pirates are just now recovering frm the ‘76 trade of Willie Randolph to the Yankees.
August 1st, 20127:30 am
Mark, you need to smile more when you are on camera.
August 1st, 20127:37 am
Contrary to most of the experts, I think the Braves are now stronger than the Nationals and can overtake them. The Nationals still are better in starting pitching, even though you are starting to see some chinks in the armour of Strausburg. However, the Braves starting pitching is improved and imo is good enough. The Braves are better top to bottom in hitting and the bullpen, and we are now at least equal on the bench. The Braves are now strong enough to win the east.
August 1st, 20129:11 am
I like the trade..hate to lose Viz but we filled two needs and didn’t have to bring in the Dumpster. As far as the “closing time’ song ..NO WAY..that song is a sad bar song and its way too mellow to pump anyone up..I say a snippet from Lil Flip’s “Game Over” would be much better..But I can dig the GNR as well.
August 1st, 20129:54 am
Losing Viz will only matter if the Braves do not resign Kimbrel and O’F when their FA times arrive. And how things during out with Venters in the future. Must say….I was not disappointed when I heard the news that Hanson was going of the DL and Medlen was staying in the rotation. The boy can flat out pitch….pounds the zone rapidly with pitch after pitch….quick to the plate…great movement and location…..changes speeds well (great off speed pitches in that 4th and 5th inning as a change of pace)…..and is a bulldog on the mound. I move Hanson into the long spot for the rest of the year when he returns. And I was pulling for JJ in the ninth…good to see him has a good inning there….and I would love to see him return to his form from early last year….although that is probably never going to happen.
August 1st, 20129:58 am
I saw the same thing and my reaction was……nice to know Bradley has kids and is a family man. The house looks like there is a lot of love in it……always a good thing.

Around the Horn…..(Concerning Law’s comments)
The Cubs would not need Babe Ruth at this time….for this year. The Braves got two good players that fit a great need for the stretch run….for this season. Johnson can play well off the bench…and has proven that….and Maholm is consistent on the mound….something the Braves have not had in the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation…..Hudson, Sheets, Minor, Medlen (for Hanson), Maholm…..looks like a consistent deal now. And Johnson is a major improvement over Diaz…don’t you think. By the way…..will the Braves keep Diaz on the DL until September 1….or will they DFA him after his DL stint? I bet….DFA. He is a good teammate…..but not a very good ML bench player any more.
By the way….when referring to ESPN in relationship to baseball…..do not call them just ESPN….all references should be….ESPN….the kiss arsse network of the New York Yankees.
August 1st, 201210:08 am
I like the deal. We get a nonhousehold name picture with pretty good stats and doing well now. We get a pinchitter that is doing great for a bench that is almost a automatic out everytime. Overall I believe that the Braves are a better team now. GO BRAVES.
August 1st, 201210:09 am
obviously I meant pitcher not picture
August 1st, 201210:10 am
I agree about Marks home studio. It is a complete mess. Mark, I would be embarrassed.
August 1st, 201210:20 am
I agree, TampaGator, Medlen was our best starter when he got his chance in ‘10. I think he was 5-0 when he blew out his elbow.
I was watching that night, and about cried when Medlin threw his last pitch, then started shaking his hand and flexing his fingers, and Cox, McCan, and even the ump rushed out to the mound to see about him. It was sickening.
But he seems to be the same pitcher now, maybe with a little velocity. He is bulldoggish too a lot like Huddy. The 2nd (?) batter hit the dinger off him last night, and he acted like it never happened. Just got back to work . . .
