Is Richt still under heavy pressure? ESPN’s Haney says yes

"I was on the Hot Seat once, Mark. I survived." (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

"You know, I was on the Hot Seat once myself, Mark." (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Mark Richt won the SEC East last season for the first time since 2005, did he not? Reversed a downward trend, did he not? Removed himself from the Hot Seat, did he not?

Yes and yes to the first two questions. To the third, Travis Haney of ESPN says, “Not so fast.”

Haney places Richt atop his list of coaches under most pressure to win. Others included: Mack Brown of Texas, Brian Kelly of Notre Dame, Bo Pelini of Nebraska and Bob Stoops of Oklahoma. (To be totally accurate, Haney doesn’t dub this his official Hot Seat list; it is, rather, “the precursor to the hot-seat list.”)

From Mr. Haney:

Richt is safe today, but with the expectations again high, that could quickly change. Such is life in the SEC, where the distance from the title game to the hot seat is seemingly never all that far. And the disciplinary issues only complicate that, because fans generally don’t want their school making headlines for the wrong reasons — much less repeatedly — and because it depletes the talent pool.

If Georgia sinks back toward .500 with this roster, despite its personnel setbacks, Richt could again find himself in an uncomfortable position. Or looking for a job.

Not saying it’s going to happen, but … it’s not unprecedented for a coach who took his team to the SEC championship game one season to be gone the next. Terry Bowden resigned at Auburn midway through the 1998 season after winning the SEC West in 1997, and Philip Fulmer was pushed aside by Tennessee in 2008 after his team played for the conference title in 2007. But Fulmer had been under duress for years, and Bowden fell out with the toxic booster Bobby Lowder.

Richt, on the other hand, remains well liked by those in power and the majority of his constituents. Does Bulldog Nation wish he’d hurry up and win a national title? Do Georgia fans agonize over every single loss? Absolutely. But the biggest issue folks had with Richt was that, since 2007, Georgia football had been on the clear descent.

From the disappointing 10-3 of 2008 to the uh-oh 8-5 in 2009 to the regrettable 6-7 of 2010 — that trend had to be reversed. It was. And the bounce-back season of 2011 followed by what should be another strong year would indicate that the Bulldogs are well and truly on the upward trail.

A year ago, Richt was coming off a losing season, his first at Georgia, and then his team started 0-2. Had the season unraveled further, he’d have been fired. It didn’t and he wasn’t. He’s got a contract extension in his pocket, and his team is sure to be ranked in the preseason top 10. Is he on the Hot Seat as we speak? Not even close. But here’s the trouble with an on-the-Hot-Seat characterization: Once the label has been affixed, it’s tough to tear off.

I think Georgia is going to be very good this season, so good it could render all questions about its coach moot. But Haney makes a salient point: “The Bulldogs have dodged the [SEC} Western Division powers in 2011 and 2012. If you're not going to [contend for a national championship] when you’re avoiding them, when are you going to do it?”

Mr. Bradley speaks the truth. Expectations for this team are sky high, and Richt knows it. I do believe that Coach Richt will impress this year, though. It takes luck, and ESPN to make it to the BCS Championship, but a team can win the SEC on it’s own. Richt needs to take care of the things he has control over.

Duh, Mcgarity fired the golf and gymnastics coaches for lack of performance. Richt righted the bad mistake at DC with Grantham and since things have been trending upward. He has been more engaged and quicker on the trigger to fix problems in the last couple of years.

Expectations at every SEC school (and most everywhere else) are high. He’s been given every opportunity to have success and he’s done a decent job but even with suspensions, he’s got to show results to stay. He’s been at the school for what a decade? It’s kind of time to win or move on really.

People need to lay off Richt. He’s done a good job. I could care less about all the supposed trouble the kids get into. It gets reported more at UGA than elsewhere unless you’re one of the ignorant dolts that think only UGA gets “thugs” and that there aren’t kids who like to party, drive bad or pack heat at other schools.

In at least two seasons in Richt’s tenure, the Dawgs were considered by many the best team in the land at bowl time and would have qualified for the 4 team playoff that is coming. The NC will come as long as we remain patient. It takes just as much luck as it does skill to win one of these things. The Dawgs have had the skill in specific years, but just haven’t had the luck.

If Georgia loses to South Carolina you will hear an earthquake. The point still is that Georgia is under producing with the talent at hand and have real problems with the conduct and character they are recruiting both players and coaches. Grantham is an overrated loose cannon, and the offense is predictable and one dimensional all pass and no run. Somewhere in this world Florida and Tenn. get out of their wheelchairs and start looking like something that belongs in the SEC. Georgia literally has had one of the weakest schedules in the country and the national press is not in their social circle and has 20/20 sight on this.

“Coach Paul Johnson is the new sheriff in Athens.” – Well, that explains why the football team is targeted by the Athens PD.

Seriously, tech people really just need to crawl back in their holes. You are irrelevant. Your team runs a offense from the 20’s, you snuck up on UGA once with it, won’t happen again. Gets proven again year after year. 2 years ago you conned America into thinking you were good, got in the top 10, had people talking about potential NC. UGA had one of it’s worst seasons in history. 3. We finished with 10 straight wins and won the East! We’re back!

For the fourth consecutive year, the Bulldogs will be breaking in a new running back. This has been a series of unfortunate circumstances at running back.

Malcolme will be the starter. Second down guy, gonna slip in this freshman Keith Marshall – the change of pace guy. Then you got this Todd Gurley, I gotta imagine Bobo will have a small package of plays for him with limited practice time. Then you have Richard Samuel, who is the best pass blocker and will be the 3rd own back.

So it adds up to 30-35 touches per game for the Dawgs’ stable of running backs.

Mark,

Love the optimism, but a quick check through Richt’s past SEC East titles, shows all 4 times, Richt LOST MORE GAMES the NEXT SEASON.

So, it is in RICHT’S NATURE to TAKE A YEAR LONG VACATION after he wins the SEC East.

I think it’s very simple. Richt hasn’t beat a team that finished top 25 AP since 2009.

He has to get a win against a team like that or he’s gone.

I’m not sure the fan base will continue to be content with him going 0-5, and 0-4 like he has the last 2 seasons against teams that finished with 9 or more wins.

Sure, Richt can beat the Buffulo’s, but I don’t think he’ll ever win another game against a top 10 team at Georgia.

Only 1 in on the schedule, that’s South Carolina, and Richt’s 0-2 of late there, and this one’s in Columbia.

Add to that, Richt’s stuggles against Florida, considering Richt has never beat Florida back to back seasons, he’ll lose that game too.

And lose the Bowl game for the 3rd straight year.

Richt’s pretty good against teams that win 6 games or less.

But against winning teams, since 2009, Richt’s 4-10.

Against teams that finish top 25 in AP, Richt’s 0-9.

Should Richt lose to South Carolina AND Florida, he will be fired.

McGarity won’t retain a coach who can’t win a real game in 3 years.

Vince has everything Georgia would need to win in this atmosphere. Dooley was not a disinterested spectator who has his kids running wild on the streets of Athens. Dooley didn’t like loosing and his mood showed it. Hell I would bring him back at 80 at least you would get some juice out of this bunch or he would die trying. To him it was not the money or fooling the public on what he was putting on the field it was being real. We got some of that at Tech, Johnson came from the Dooley tree and you can say a lot about what Johnson is or isn’t but he is involved, unlike Richt.

Mark Richt started his coaching career in 1985 as a volunteer quarterbacks coach for the Florida State Seminoles (FSU), serving under Bobby Bowden. Richt left the Seminoles to join East Carolina University as their offensive coordinator in 1989. After one year at East Carolina, Richt returned to Florida State to serve as the Seminoles’ quarterbacks coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1994 upon the departure of Brad Scott. Under Richt’s direction, Florida State had some of college football’s most explosive offenses; in his seven years as offensive coordinator, the Seminoles ranked in the nation’s top five scoring offenses on five occasions, were top twelve in total offense five times, and top twelve in passing offense five times. The 2000 Seminoles offense finished the regular season ranked first nationally in total offense (549.0 yards per game), first in passing offense (384.0 ypg), and third in scoring offense (42.4 points per game).

While an assistant coach at Florida State, Richt coached two Heisman Trophy winners, quarterbacks Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke, and was part of two national championships (1993 and 1999).

Most all coaches of major schools, and pro’s for that matter, are under enormous pressure to win, or be gone. It is the nature of the beast. I don’t think most people even have a clue how hard it is to run a clean program, win, plus keep 85 players happy, academically eligible, and out of trouble, plus please the AD, school board, and alumni. Try coaching a little league all star team where you have 12 players and can only play 9 at a time and you will get an idea. Even though that doesn’t even compare with coaching a major college program, you will get an idea. I guarantee you will have parents, maybe even some of them friends, who will be extremely upset with you.

Will fans be snowed by running up the score against teams like Buffulo, and winning 9 or 10 games because you only play 1 top 25 team?

Richt can’t fix the problems that keep happening:
no special teams coach (Last in SEC in field goal %, punt return, kick return)
turnover margin against ranked teams
rushing game better than 7th in the SEC
conditoning, losing the 4th quarter
2nd half adjustments

defensive points allowed against ranked teams

Coach Spurrier though UGA played real good last time, and deserved to win. Just had some unlucky plays here and there, and had a little bit of a hard time, AGAIN, stopping Marcus Lattimore. I’m sure, the 3rd time will be the charm for Coach Richt. Surely he won’t lose 3 straight to the lowly South Carolina? No, so keep him, he’s better than Saban anyday.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying. Last year was good enough to buy Richt more time, but that’s about it. Ten wins sounds nice, but who did we really beat? I haven’t bought this “Richt is no longer on the hot seat” trope that people have been selling. It’s not like we won the national championship.

I’ve always been a Richt supporter. Love the guy to death as a person. But I’m tired of the direction of the football program. Hanging on to Willie too long, refusing to upgrade the offensive coordinator position, the endless arrests, the inability to win big games, the losses to non-conference opponents…it’s just getting old. We saw some things turn back in the right direction last year, but we need to see more of it this year. If the progress stalls in 2012, I’ll be ready for a new era in Georgia football.

Mark,

ESPN’s not the only one that’s given up hope for Mark Richt. Phil Steele, who has been on the mark on the SEC East for many years, says it’s Florida in 2012, and not UGA. I guess that’s because UGA hasn’t won consecutive games vs. UF in over 20 years. And Steele can’t see the way Spurrier has figured out how to beat Georgia (blitz Aaron Murray to get interceptions and fumbles, win special teams, count on 3 turnovers, save Lattimore for the 4th quarter due to UGA’s inferior conditioning, etc.)

Well, well, well. Yes, UGA has problems with bad eggs … but so do other schools. FSU just had a player arrested for a small amount of dope in his car, a suspended license etc.

Arkansas has had several arrests, and the list goes on and on.

All of the players at UGA and other schools were recruited by other SEC and D-1 schools, so it’s not like they would have been angels if their signatures were with other schools. On the surface, at least, it appears there is something unbalanced in UGA’s policies compared with other schools. Whether that can be worked out, I tend to doubt it.

As for this season, I expect the Dawgs to have an excellent year. The schedule certainly lines up that way. I’m just hoping the players can focus on the games on the field and not the off field games.

I’m with you Mark. I think UGA would have to sink towards .500 again to get Richt in jeopardy.

This whole “dodged the West powers” is all bull. People manipulate this schedule argument all the time depending on what point they want to make.

UGA didnt dodge anyone. They won the East, and ran into LSU in the SEC Championship. If you think they arent as good as Arkansas, Bama, and LSU, then the best they can do is win the East which is exactly what they did. Besides, I dont recall anyone knocking Bama last year because they didnt play South Carolina or UGA when comparing schedules with OSU.

From a statistical standpoint, the Georgia Tech defense did not show an improvement last season. This is Al Groh’s third season, will we finally see the switch to the 3-4 pay off for Georgia Tech?

Its going to be tough to improve a lot on defense having lost, unexpectedly, the most productive player in ILB Julian Burnett to a career ending injury. Replacing Burnett and how much the defensive line, especially the NT position, improve will be the biggest keys. The linebackers have more depth having recruited to the 3-4 for two seasons now, even with the Burnett loss. The unit needs some players to step up as difference makers; OLB Jeremiah Attaochu is a player to watch here as is RS Fr. Jabari Hunt-Days.

The secondary is the strongest unit on the defense with three solid cornerbacks and two productive safeties. This unit was better than the stats showed last year, but the lack of pressure from the front seven made pass defense tougher than it should have been.

One overlooked item this offseason was the hiring of a new strength and conditioning coach. I have thought for the last three seasons under the old regime Tech looked physically overmatched on defense, especially up front. It may take until next season to see changes with the hire coming just last month.

The improvement on defense really comes down to finding playmakers in the front seven to slow the run and get a consistent pass rush.

If Georgia Tech improves this year, it will likely be on the strength of their defense which has shown little to no improvement under Al Groh since Tech switch to the 3-4. Last year Georgia Tech was fifth in the ACC in total defense at 359 yards per game (in 2009 before the switch they allowed 360). Tech was eighth last year in points allowed at 26.1 (in 2009 they allowed 24.8). If Georgia Tech wants to take the next step forward they must do it on defense and I just don’t see the horses in the front seven to think they will improve this year. I don’t think they will be worse, but I don’t see a big jump happening for Tech on defense. Tech will compete in the ACC this year, just like they do every year under PJ. They have an excellent chance of finishing second in the Coastal division behind Virginia Tech. In order to take the next step they need to recruit better players on defense and they need to do a better job developing them once they get on campus.

First let me say I really like Mark Richt and hope he is our coach for a long time. That being said, I absolutely agree with the ESPN article and that Richt is still under a lot of pressure this year. But what coach at any top Tier SEC team isn’t? This isn’t all that different though from any other major program. Bottom line there are some SEC coaches (Saban, Spurrier and Miles come to mind) that have built up enough good will with their fan bases that they could withstand a very disappointing season.

Richt moved the program in a positive direction last season… but it is going to take more than 1 good season for the majority of fans to forget the dissapointments of 2008 – 2010. I think the only way he builds up some job security is winning the SEC again and/or beating a top 10 team. Short of that…. I don’t think he can afford another dissapointing year. With the schedule we have and the talent coming back anything short of 10 wins and I think McGarity is really going to hear it. Not saying that is right, but just what I think….

3) We lost the top 2 running back producers for the 2nd straight season
4) We return a total of 2 td’s combined with the 5 backs
5) We have a true Freshman kicker with 0 starts

Therefor, we will win 11 games or more!!!

Some of you have commnented that above .500 is some sort of threshold. Given our schedule this year…Unless our roster gets decimated by freak injuries… I can’t see Richt surviving anything worse than 8-4… and I think 9-3 or 8-4 would really put him squarely on the hot seat again. Not saying he has to win 10 games every year, I just think looking at it objectively.. understanding the expectations with the talent we have and the positive direction we moved in last year, this would not be the year to go 7 – 5 or worse.

Richt should be on the hot seat….OK coach, but greatly underachieving with the players recruited. Sure last year (and probably this one) will look pretty good as far as record is concerned due to very easy sched, but if/when they play someone of significance, they will get wiped off the field.

Nothing wrong with pressure, pressure can be a good thing as far as I’m concerned. The expectations at UGA are high( although not as high as they sometimes should be). I think what has hurt Richt is that he had so much success early on, that he became complacent. And as a fan-base, we got complacent as well. We made a LOT of allowances for Richt, despite his limitations, because he’s such a great guy.

There has been times when Richt’s teams have shown signs of greatness, and then there are other times where his teams will completely lay an egg. The SEC title game last year was a perfect example. We completely outplayed LSU in the 1st half, held them to without a freakin first down! We could have very easily been up 21-0 in that game. Yet we completely shot ourselves in the foot and fell apart in the second half. Now LSU was the better team, but shoot don’t just play hard for a half and then quit! I mean c’mon, you’re playing the 1# team in the country for the SEC Title! Give a crap!!!

See that is what has been so frusterating with Richt; he has proven that he can put a team on the field that can compete with the elites in the country when he wants to. But when things go bad, like they do in games, he just seems ill equipped to a. make changes or b. to chew guys butts out when they need to be chewed. I really have a hard time understanding what motivates Richt. One week, he and his coaching staff will put together a great game plan, and then the next week it’s just horrible. I really don’t get it.

When is the last time an ACC team beat an SEC team? For that matter, when is the last time an ACC team beat anybody of significance? Remind me, how did your 2011 Champion Clempson Tigers fare against W Va in the Orange Bowl??

As for the last time Georgia beat a Top 10 team, hmmmm, let’s see, oh yeah, wasn’t it that butt kicking we put on the then 7 ranked GT Yellow Jackets down at Historic Grant Field, Bobby Dodd Stadium? I seem to recall we administed a whipping to the “cheating by playing illegal players trying to beat the Dawgs” Fish Fry Johnson bunch. What has the Head Coach done with the talent on the field in recent years? Has the players under your direction been good stewards of the program? Are the players under your direction in good academic standing? Are the players under your direction graduating?

McG: Coach, what’s the problem.

CMR: Dang it Greg, I can’t beat a ranked team anymore.

McG: Coach, how can I help?

CMR: Well, I wish there was some way you could fix things were we don’t have to play those guys.

McG: You mean, you want a schedule void of any top 25 teams, except those we can’t get out of..

CMR: That’s right, ten I feel like I can excel.

McG: Consider it done, I’ll try and make sure you only face 1 top 25 team, and it won’t be from the dreaded SEC West, and it will be a team who plays 2 out of the top 3 SEC West teams, will that work.

CMR: Yes Greg, you’re an answer to my prayer, halleluyah.

Using your logic, why can’t Tech compete with UNC or Duke in basketball?

I don’t really understand the question. Duke and UNC are two of the top 3 programs in all of college basketball and GT beats them much more then they beat UGA in football. They beat UNC 3 times in one season recently.

Agreed. Coaches are evaluated on a number of things. Naturally, winning is very important, but in addition what you mentioned, the ability to recruit well and get the most out of your players. Even more important, don’t have any sexual predators on your coaching staff. Also not advisable to lock up a player in a broom closet, especially if his dad is Crag James.

I wouldn’t label Richt as on the hot seat going into the season but it will depend on how the season goes as to whether or not he puts himself on the hot seat. The downside risk of an easier SEC schedule and easy non-conference games is that you are not just expected to win but win convincingly.

I believe UGA and SoCal are the only two major teams to be favored in all scheduled games for 2012. Therefore, UGA is expected to be undefeated when they play for the SECCG at the dome. If the coaches and/or players have this on their mind instead of taking one game at a time then an upset or two could occur. In which case Richt will need to buy aloe by the caseload if he wants to sit down.

On the flipside of the risk, if I were a UGA fan I would much rather be favored going into each game than be the underdog by a couple of TDs. On paper, the dawgs have the talent to run the regular season table and take the Athens-to-Atlanta shuttle in December to play for the not-so-mythical SECC…..unless, of course, you’re Steve Spurrier and believe that non-division games shouldn’t count!

My question to UGA fans is if the dawgs go undefeated in regular season but lose in the SECCG and then lose their bowl game would you consider Richt to be on the hot seat?

The point is Bob, I’m not sure why you always have so much time to look at our program and so little to spend on your own. Richt took care of the main problem and got a new DC. The rest was OL problems, Cox at Qb and extenuating circumstances that were unusual but unfolded Murrays freshman year. He promptly got a new dc and cut down on turnovers and penalties.

Richt is THE man who has NOW put UGA in position to contend for the SEC title the next 5 years and he is not going anywhere, just like, I cant believe Im say this, Bradley said! Because they will be winning and going to the SEC championship several times.

One issue I have with Haney and his thinking is that the time is now tfor Richt to win the NC because UGA does not play the west powers. That makes sense but its not fair to Richt. The team this year on paper is not ready to do that. They could win the SEC possibly and play for it but winning it will take a lot of leadership and great QB, RB, OL and receiver play. A lot of growth has to be done over the year. When the team is ready to win the NC would MOST likely happen next year IF Murray stayed for his senior year IMO. But since he most likely wont, that will hurt the chances unless Mason or Lemay cannot turn the ball over. So it does bode better for this year than next year.

There is a chance this year to win the SEC and then the NC shot will likely happen. The next few years this scenario is likely also thanks to Granthams D being able to stifle other teams. If the OL makes great strides and we have some receivers step up the next couple years, UGA will be in the SEC and national spotlight, regardless of when they are playing the West. The West will have to play UGA and I assure you they will NOT be looking forward to it either.

Its not RIchts fault though if its time to play the west and he has a rookie QB or the team is not quite as good as the west when they play them. Thats not a fair scenario. Sometimes you are strong and sometimes you are not. Scheduling might help you or hurt you when you play the west. Personally I think UGA will be strongest when they are playing the west. Personally I would not mind playing them this year if Murray can refrain from choking

The IMPORTANT thing is, and McGarrity already stated this, is progress and going in the right direction. NOT winning NC’s. ONLY one team a year out of 40-50 or so that have legitimate programs can make it. Half of those have no chance after the first few weeks. NOT good odds and certainly will not decide if Richt is on the hot seat or not.

Playing in the SEC championship several times and winning the SEC and playing for the NC a couple times the next 5 years should make ALL UGA fans very satisfied and ALL should praise Richt and bash him no more.

That’s crazy. Richt is nowhere near the “hot seat”. As a fan of Mark Richt’s I will say this, he needs to get a better feel for the game when the game gets tight or close. The Michigan State overtime fiasco of trying to position for a long field goal on 3rd down, rather even attempting to get a first was a terrible lapse in judgment. Or punting to Mathieu – TWICE! – when our defense had absolutely dominated the game and he’s the only player on the entire LSU roster that can hurt you with his hands on the ball. He ended up returning both of those punts and a complete domination went for naught because of a key strategical mistake. Those things can’t happen anymore. If Richt is going to take the leap to National Championship contender, his judgment has to get better in key moments.

Mark Richt is the best coach in the SEC and UGA is lucky to have him.

Mark Richt has graduated 222 players in 11 years which is pretty much an entire recruiting class each year and won 106 games during that same period of time which makes it one of the highest, if not THE highest winning percentage program in the SEC over that 11 year period.

Mark has not won a NC yet, but we have been in the SECCG 5 times since he came to Athens and won it twice. We never went to the SECCG before he got here.

CMR’s bowl record is 7-4.

He has run a clean winning program, have never embarrassed us, and we have never been placed on probation during his tenure.

I remember his first year as the UGA head coach when he made the statement that he would rather lose a game than cheat. That puts him way ahead of most other football coaches.

Oh and lets never forget that the reason Tech folks hate him is that he is 10-1 against Tech.

If UGA ever fires him then the fans will deserve the dismal and frustrating future that they will get.

To SHOW IMPROVEMENT ……………UGA needs to really dominate on D all the way to the SEC CG ( no worse than 10-1) and have a fighting chance of winning it and being 11-1. If we lose CG fine, then we STILL ATTEND A HIGH QUALITY BOWL and if we WIN THE SEC CG, then we have a shot at other things.

Pulling off some 9-3 thang will not do it. Chic Fil A invite will not do it. Cap One invite may not do it. UGA is hungy ( the $$ alumni are) to win a major bowl and the SEC CG.

One thing we all can agree on is that without us the AJC is in big trouble. We run this show and with humor! You need humor since 99% of the so called sport journalist never played a down of anything in their life but they could spell. Mark must have big friends in the UGA admin otherwise he would already be gone or the UGA folks don’t wish to spend the money to see him gone. Vangorder and Neil Calloway provided the discipline needed for your great years but that is over. You’re much better off with a contact that has no buyout for when you’re paying a guy 3 million a year to win that should be all you need. The amount paid these guys these days is just amazing but to be tied down for a 6-8 million buyout is just crazy. I thought it was crazy when Nick proctected himself from Bama folks getting involved in his business with a clause that stated he can be gone by nightime if he wants and nobody gets stuck with a huge bill. Your AD should have followed the bouncing ball with Richt. Heck raise his pay by 1/2 mill and remove the buyout and extend the deal if that makes it sound better. If he fails then fire him and he gets the rest of his 4 1/2 mill. Really how many millions can a country boy spend. Nick is working between 23-26 million in his piggy bank as of today and he has turned down the pros and two big college problems in the past 6 months because he finally got happy with himself at 61 and there is really no big thing over the hill anymore. Sometime you just needed to get lucky and Alabama did with Nick Saban. With the past record of the BOT I wouldn’t be surprised if Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans don’t take Nick’s spot once he retires if their past hires are an indication of the future.

Ok, so, I am reel smart. I graduated from U-G-A. Now, here’s how simple this thang is ya’ll.

1 We lost 4 of 6 olineman to NFL and are left with guys right @30 starts combined
+1 We lost our top 2 running backs for 2nd straight yr, the 5 guys left have 2 td’s combined
+1 We lost our All American Punter, and new punter has 0 games experience
+1 We lost our All American Kicker, and new kicker has 0 games experience
____
14-0

Get the math? No? Ok, let me break it down for ya’ll, BerniesDawg style.

Losing all that experience doesn’t hurt at all, it actually makes us BETTER because we have more guys playing their TRUE position.

I believe the suspensions will make the team MUCH BETTER. No? Let me explain.

Ok, we don’t really play a ranked team until the South Carolina game.

That allows us to:
1- Rest our starters for the first several games (many are suspended)
2- Give other guys a lot of reps and gain invaluable experience, also preventing injuries to starters
3- Creating more depth when the South Carolina & Florida games and the tough part of the schedule actually does roll around, we will be fresher, and deeper, and can rotate guys in to play hard for 4 quarters.

Ya’ll agree with BerniesDawg?

Since when has a coach who’s gone 10-2 in the previous regular season been declared “on the hotseat?’

Since when has a coach with recent record of 3-0 or 4-0 against Auburn and a 2-1 record against Alabama (winners of the last 3 national championships) been declared “on the hotseat?”

Since when has a coach who JUST SIGNED a new long-term contract been delcared “on the hotseat?”

THE STUFF THE AJC STAFF CONSTANTLY STIRS UP LEAVES THEM WITHOUT CREDIBILITY!

Mark Richt is one of the GREAT coaches in all of college football. He has a proven record of a proven record of success in the toughest league (SEC) in college football and many forecasters think his chances of winning the SEC East are as good as any for 2012.

Georgia beat Auburn by 6 tds last year, and Vandy was in the game only because Walsh missed 3 field goals, South Carolina has never beaten Georgia 3 times in a row. Now if you said Vandy,Auburn are much better than tech then that makes sense. LOL at any Tech fan wanting to trash a program that has dominated them for 55 years. Murray’s #11 is an apt choice.

Murray has averaged 11 interceptions per season so far.

Murray will be 0-11 against teams that finish top 25 after this season.

Murray is 5′ 11”, and he weights 211.

Murray has never won 11 games in a season at UGA.

Murray has never beat an 11 win team.

Richt is a good coach, represents UGA well, is fair with his players. Not soft, not a bully. I hope he coaches at UGA for a very long long time.

I used to care more about wins/losses than now; I grew up.

Realized college football isn’t life or death. Realized it’s a game and the players who play the game in the arena are far more important than the scoreboard. Realized the most important thing is for people to come out at the end of the day healthy.

Love football. However lose someone you love to cancer, attend a funeral instead of a game and you’ll realize a game is just a game and it’s a blessing to enjoy.

Perspective is important.

For those who aren’t crazy about our offense, I’m curious. Wasn’t Dooley at Georgia about a decade when he switched to the Veer? I don’t know for sure if it’s our playbook or our playcaller, but I really would like a different offense … or at least some new and innovative plays and/or playcalling this year. Yes I know a good case can be made for keeping what we already have but I guess I’d just like to see some different things. I want Richt to succeed but man oh man is he slow to make changes. At least Dooley was willing to try new things. I know the so called experts are picking us to do well and I’m always optimistic. But I really don’t know what to expect this season. The Carolina game in Columbia has the potential to be a classic since it is later in the season and I know alot of us alums want want to beat them in the worst way. I’d say that game and the Florida and Auburn games are must wins for Richt if he is to keep another Bulldawg Nation uprising from starting again this season.

Patrick Garbin wrote about how we’ve only had an offensive line this inexperienced, 11 times in the past. 9 out of 11 times, we won less games the next season as a result.

9 out of 11= 82% chance we go from 10 wins, DOWN to 9 or LESS.

Our oline is so inexperience they rank in the bottom 12 in the NCAA.

So, yes Mr Bradley, unfortunately, the tea leaves say 8 or 9 wins.

Look for losses to Floida, South Carolina, and possibly Auburn, Tech or Tennessee.

Plus, of course, Richt’s 0-2 in his last 2 Bowl games, so add another loss there.

I’d say, 8-5.

With the diminished schedule we are playing this year, we UGA alumni should have great expectations for Mark Richt, his coaching staff and players. There is not lack of experience in any of the three areas I have mentioned. Anything less than a total two loss season(including a bowl game) should be view as a failure for all three, particularly, Coach Richt. I sent my son(age 16) to the Mark Richt football camp in June and was very disappointed with the lack of professionalism of the camp, particularly, by OL Coach, Friend. The coaches did not even introduce themselves to the attendees, for starters, and it went downhill from there. No wonder we are having trouble attracting top CHARACTER type athletes to UGA. When will this change? Won’t be seeing any Stinchcomb family types in the near future. Theus, may be the exception.

Ted Striker, I understand what you’re saying and you are right. There are tons more important things than winning football games. And I especially understand what you’re saying about cancer. I despise that disease in the worst way. Wins aren’t the most important thing in life. However the pursuit of excellence is no small thing and one of the ways excellence is measured in football is wins and losses. I think Richt attempts to build character in his players but he sometimes puts the team in jeopardy by recruiting players with more athletic skill than interest in being molded. I can’t really blame him for that because everybody deserves a chance. Unfortunately some players just don’t understand this and in the end let themselves, Coach Richt and the team down. Even though Richt has been burned more than he’s been rewarded with these type of players, it’s still an indication of excellence. Graduation rate is an indication of excellence. Our drug policy, as harsh as it is, is an indication of excellence. I believe Richt runs a clean program and that is a sign of excellence. Each of these pillars are indicators of excellence and for me they are all important. I want to win with integrity because if we are successful only on the field, the winning will not be as sweet. We can go undefeated on the field and not do our part in these other areas and still be unsuccessful. Likewise, we can do things well in these other areas and not play up to our ability on the field. Football is only a game but like everything else in life, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. Acceptance of anything less I believe is simply contentment with mediocrity. I want to win badly but not at any cost. I want to win because my school is worthy of excellence. I have seen it before and I hope to see everytime they play a game. There’s no shame in wanting to win and wanting to do it the right way. The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. I like Richt and want him to be successful. But he’s got win and win consistently.

No word though on what his grades were upon completion of the course. I’ve come to accept that CMR is a decent man and a competent coach, but he’s not going to take us to the top of the mountain, or even near the summit consistently. Our top players will move to the NFL. We’ll continue to recruit our share of talent. But CMR has not shown that he is able to create an elite program. So, settle down and be a fan. Pull for the Dawgs, have a good time on Saturdays, and don’t push to fire CMR unless you can guarantee that his replacement will do a whole lot better. And that’s a whole lot unlikely.

I am a huge UGA supporter and also a realist. Richt will NEVER lead us to a national championship. There is not enough depth on this year’s team to get us through the season folks. He is a fine man. He can not manage a roster. How many years of patchwork lines with no experience ?do we have to endure? We have roughly 70 scholarship players BEFORE the injuries and additional suspensions hit. It just won’t work. If we want to be more than a team hoping to win the division, it is going to have to be with a different coach.

CMR is a fine person whose personal life is much to be admired, if you believe in Christian principles. That being said, is he a good football coach? I am not qualified to answer that question, but with the supposedly great talent that he has had, has he under achieved? Maybe, just maybe, the expectations of the UGA fans is a cause of the problem as UGA, in my opinion has never been looked at as an elite program. Without those three great years with HW, has UGA really been considered one of the top programs, year after year? I am a UGA grad from way back, and while I love the Dogs, I have always been realistic in the fact that I do not expect UGA to be in the championship hunt every years. I want us to be competitive and hope to maybe win the SEC every so often, but year after year, not on my radar with the quality of teams in our conference.

Last season was more of a stay of execution than losing a label. We still have to prove we can beat good teams and consistently contend with the best SEC teams. I suspect a similar result to last year. They will win about 9-10 regular season games and get clobbered in the SECCG if they make it there. With the untested offensive line, loss of IC and a new kicker, I just can’t see UGA being any better than last year. The defense should be really good, but if they continue to give up the short field due to turnovers then they will continue to lose the big games.

He said:(paraphrasing) That Coach Richt was in the same cloth as Vince Dooley and that UGA fans were happy with winning 8 or more games a year and competing for a conference title every few years. He went on and on about how Coach Dooley was never a great coach, but kept UGA in close games, recruited good players and managed to win when he needed to win just as Coach Richt is doing now.

How is Mark Richt going to have a strong year and be on an upward trail when he hasn’t beat a team who has made it to the AP Poll Top 10 after Auburn # 9 way back in 2006, when this season, he faces 1 team only who made any top 25 poll and 11 opponents who average 4.8 wins ?

And, doesn’t that also ignore the off-field issues of BAD PRESS ?

Flat Tire we ain’t gonna beat any team making the top 10 again this season – there isn’t even one remotely on the entire schedule.

RHall55 we ain’t gonna have a poor results season against the top teams sometime in the next 4 years because of his pitiful roster management – it will be 2013, and you can Mark my Words.

How Mark Richt thought he could go into 2012 with only 14 signed scholarship recruits counting toward this 2012 recruiting class 1 of whom is already gone when he told us all 14 were in here at UGA is beyond understanding, facing a 14-game season.

[...] Should Mark Richt be on the hot seat in 2012? It would be unprecedented for a coach who took his team to the SEC Championship game last year to be gone the next no matter how bad the record is. There is just too much talent for Richt not to win games this year. This year could be very different, as Georgia has likely the best defense in the SEC and maybe the country. I look for Georgia to be the East member representing in Atlanta come December. There’s a long way to get to that point, but the players are in uniform to get it done. [AJC] [...]

A few comments about UGA:

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. Red panties.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

We’re losing to South Carolina, Missouri, and even Auburn this year bank on it.

I’d even add trap games are Florida(as usual) and Vandy with Tennessee a big ? mark to me.

I’d hire TCU’s coach or even upgrade Todd G. to the position Richt is too damn nice.

We keep saying Bama and LSU are doing it illegally, but until those headlines start appearing we won’t know.

Until thing Mark Richt has gone completely soft in the SEC you can’t be soft not until you win the Big Prize cause being Nice don’t cut in the SEC and guess what Mark Richt looks like too much of a nice guy.

Can’t get another team I like UGA and not only that I can’t get out of this town if I wanted to.

Look at what Jimbo Fisher is doing down at FSU he’s giving Greg Reid a chance before he goes after any sort of punishment at all.

What did we do to Crowell just drop kick him to the side of the road.

Still as we currently stand Athens, GA Bulldogs going nowhere until Mark Richt and Mike Bobo are out of the picture.

From a true Uga fan.. CMR should have a job at Uga.. CMR should not be the head coach at Uga. QB coach is a good job for CMR..Uga needs a Head Coach… CMR is a good man with great morrals. The dawgs have no OL.. The dawgs have suspended players. The dawgs have no kicking game that has proven itself. It is going to be a rebuild year for Uga.. CMR never puts a total team together…

Maybe the question here should be “how much is it worth to pay Coach Richt for each victory?” Even if the Dogs win ten games again this year, that’s $300,000 per victory. If they only win eight, that’s $375,000 per win. Even if they win twelve, Richt will collect $250,000 per victory. That’s a lot of cash for each win, but I realize that it’s all about the money. I’m glad that he knows what the hell he’s doing.

>>From the disappointing 10-3 of 2008 to the uh-oh 8-5 in 2009 to the regrettable 6-7 of 2010 — that trend had to be reversed. It was.<<

No, it wasn't. UGA still didn't have a quality win, going 0-4 on the season against ranked opponents. (0-9 for the past 2 years, 2-14 since the 2007 season.) Getting humiliated by a patty-cake BSU squad, punked by SC at home, blown out by LSU, and choking away yet another bowl game IS NOT a sign that the program is turning around. It's a sign that the SEC East is suffering from an almost unprecedented level of weakness.

If UGA has a bad year it will be hard for Richt to survive it. If not this season, when ? We lose most of our defense. If he can’t compete with the best with this defense and a top QB he probably never will.

I hope he has the top 5 season he should with a ridiculously easy schedule and top talent. If he doesn’t though I think we should find somebody who can use the great resources at UGA to to compete with the best year in year out.

MARK RICHT CANNOT BEAT THE TOP TEAMS

July 13th, 2012
5:36 am

“Aaron Murray has never beat an 11 win team.”
______________________________________
Huh ? He hasn’t beat a team who won 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, or even 9. In the season just ended there were 27 teams who had 10-Win Season, and we had the most losses with 4; and, there were 36 teams who had 9-Win Season beating none of those. He gets the heebie-jeebies, and happy feet, against every top team while watching the other QB out-perform him 11 times in 27 games to-date, several of whom were horrible teams, too.

68 Down to 68 signed scholarship recruits on-campus today with Fall Practice a month and change away. This reflects the 2 of the signed scholarship recruits from 2012 class when Mark Richt told us all were qualified : both John Atkins and Leonard Floyd have flunked-out before they even got here. Status of Dream Team ? Lost 7 of them, flunked-out or felonies : 7 gone Dream Team. Self-Imposed NCAA Probation of 16 LOST SCHOLARSHIP RECRUITS 2012. (Would be 17 if not for Jarvis Jones transfer-in, after we whiffed signing him out of Columbus High School.)

Jarvis Jones is the most celebrated Georgia Bulldogs’ Linebacker in the proud # 11 all-time win program 120-year history. He’s gone after 2012 with the rest of the Defense. We have no one on SEC Coaches 1st team offense; not 1. Our special teams all graduated and we stand pat with no special teams’ coach. We play cupcake-city schedule, especially at home 2012, and for the entire season face only 1 team who made any top 25 poll, game 6. Be prepared now for homer-crowd to post daily how great we’re doing for 5 games, then play our 1-game season against what should be about the # 19 South Carolina team we’ve lost to twice in a row, and then finish out our schedule of 11 games against opponents who average 4.8 wins.

That is when the season starts. Alabama or LSU, then another lack-luster opponent for Mark Richt in his bowl games 7-4 when he has yet to play anything other than a lack-luster opponent in all 11 bowl games. I still say 13-1. Start # 6; play no one. Beat no one. 7 seasons ago we last beat a team who made the AP Poll Top 10 and lost to 2-win Vandie that season whose 2 wins were over 0-12 Duke and 1-11 Temple.

We SUCK.

From SB Nation…”The old saying is that college football teams take on the personality of their coaches, and nowhere is that more true than at Alabama. Saban’s brutally professional, clinically detail-oriented, obsessively driven approach has created a program where sloppiness and shoddy preparation–from offseason workouts to gameday routines to play execution–isn’t so much “not tolerated” as nonexistent. It’s not a particularly personable philosophy, which is one reason Saban has arguably become the SEC’s most hated villain. But as the 2011 season grinds into motion, it’s also what’s made him the nation’s single most successful active college football coach.”

What they say about CMR…
“Mark Richt Finally Stops Losing Control Of Something”
“Mark Richt, football coach who gets blamed for his lack of grippage on this, that and the other thing, has finally encircled something with his dominion and maintained ascendancy over a situation. Even though it’s just one situation, it’s still one thing we cannot possibly blame Mark Richt for, unless if this linebacker ends up getting arrested for resisting a resisting arrest arrest, which sounds plausible in Athens, and Mark Richt has lost control of plausibility.”

LSU with Miles plays loosie goosie…Peterson at Boise, play with confidence…take a look at the other successful programs and they have a “brand”…UGA’s Mark Richt is know for his charataible and missionary work(s), oh yea and he’s know for being in contention for the Fulmer Cup year after year…
He should be on a short lease…

I’ve seen posts on here blaming, Bobo, Murray, and special teams for UGA’s woes vs good teams.

That is total bs. There’s a common denominator:

Bobo is running Mark Richt’s offense
Murray is Mark Richt’s choice of QB
Whoever it is that coaches STs is who Mark Richt put in charge

The “buck” stops with Mark Richt.
