Joe Johnson? Gone. Marvin? Gone. Danny Ferry? A keeper

Me, I'm thinking it's about time for Danny Ferry to show us something. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

A week later, the Atlanta Hawks have been transformed. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

It took Danny Ferry a week to turn a franchise going nowhere into one with room again to grow. It took him a week to reach an agreement to send Joe Johnson to the Nets for a bunch of guys whose principal value rests in the expiration dates on their contracts. It took this general manager a week to ship Marvin Williams, enduring symbol of opportunity squandered, to Utah.

To follow the Hawks is to expect the worst, which means the initial response to this watershed Johnson deal was to figure it would be overturned on some technicality. Maybe we shouldn’t be fatalistic. At the rate Ferry is moving, he might be able to convince the NBA to replay the final seconds of Game 6 against Boston from 1988, and make it so that Dominique Wilkins (and not Cliff Levingston) takes the last shot this time.

A week ago we wondered if/when Ferry would dare to tamper with the Core Four. On Day 1 of Week 2, we got our answer. Ferry gored the Core without having to deal either Josh Smith or Al Horford, and by offloading Johnson he turned this capped-out club into one with a hangar’s worth of financial headroom.

Shedding Johnson’s contract was the only way the Hawks could get better. He makes $20 million per season, which is roughly one-third of what the NBA allows to fund an entire roster. It’s one thing if your $20-million-man is Kobe Bryant, but Johnson, over the two years since he re-upped, has sunk to being third-best among Hawks.

There are two wonders at play: That the plodding Hawks would find a GM bold enough to do what needed doing, and that he’d find such a willing partner. But the Nets are moving to a new arena in Brooklyn and they’re coming off a 22-win season and they’re looking to compete with the Knicks and Linsanity in their big-city marketplace, so they need someone of substance to pair with Deron Williams.

They’re also the property of a Russian named Mikhail Prokhorov, who is rated by Forbes the 57th-richest man in the world. Thus did super-sleuth Ferry identify the only NBA owner who could look on Johnson’s contract and not hurl.

Let’s not kid ourselves. There’s every chance the Hawks will be worse, basketball-wise, next season. On talent, a slightly diminished Johnson is still better than anyone the Nets are slated to send here. (Poor Marvin, however, won’t be missed. He might have been the league’s least essential starter.) That’s how the NBA works: To get better, you must get lucky in the draft or spend big in free agency, and the Hawks were positioned to do neither.

It wasn’t all his fault, but Johnson had become the flashpoint for Hawk failings. He wasn’t quite as good as they needed him to be, and his contract kept them from hiring better players to put around him. (Let’s not fault him for signing what was proffered. You would’ve, too.) But Johnson didn’t endear himself to fans, and it’s never a marketing plus when your biggest name is a sourball.

Neither was it Williams’ fault that Billy Knight chose him over Deron Williams and Chris Paul in 2005. But Marvin played so long here — seven full seasons — to so little effect that it became impossible to watch him without thinking of  the point guard not taken. And that, sad to say, was just like the Hawks: They’d whiff in the lottery, and they’d hand Johnson a new $120 million deal at the time they planned to de-emphasize his Iso-Joes.

The Hawks had come to occupy a terrible place: The team as constituted had gone as far as it could, and without cap room there was little hope for tomorrow. Now there is. The Hawks will have money to spend next summer, when Dwight Howard and the aforementioned Chris Paul figure to be free agents. The team with no future just traded for one.

And the new man in charge? Well, he’s in charge. In four years as Hawks GM, the best move Rick Sund made was to trade for the sixth man Jamal Crawford. In seven days, his successor has halved the Core Four and moved the immovable contract. Which would seem to make Danny Ferry an irresistible force.

One of the best days in a long time for this franchise. I finally have hope for the future, instead of just looking forward to an early playoff exit.

Maybe resign Kirk, find someone serviceable in free agency to play the 3, and look forward to next year and try to pair Josh, Al and Dwight

Hawks should extend Josh Smith and wait until free agency next season and push for Dwight. They have a decent PG, so instead of trying to get and overpaying for CP3, extend Teague and try to get a good wing player like Monta Ellis. AND Horford would be back in his original position.

PG – Jeff Teague
SG – Monta Ellis
SF – Josh Smith
PF – Al Horford
C – Dwight Howard

That’s a nice starting 5 right there.

Ferry is at least trying to do something to make a change in this pathetic core of a team. I support the continued exploding of a failing roster….and to rebuilding it the right way…in the lottery again and this time with some luck and better decisions.

I trust DF more than any Hawks GM I’ve ever seen in my life (over 40 years)…and this is after only one week.

Keep up with the dynamite; trade the overrated Al Horford before it’s too late. Trade them all so we can rebuild the right way.

Ferry has done all he’s needed to do. He got rid of our two worst contracts. Now it’s up to J Smoove to convince Dwight to sign here in the offseason. I have a feeling the fans would come out to watch these guys. Joe Johnson killed this team’s chemistry. That’s the reason Smoove wanted out. The Hawks wanted to run n gun and be an up-tempo team but lazy Joe wouldn’t allow it.

With a potential lineup of Teague, some SG, Smoove, Horford and Howard I don’t see how you couldn’t get excited. Just that backcourt alone is championship caliber.

The people on this blog don’t seem to understand cap room means nothing if you can’t sign free agents remember the summer of Lebron Knicks had tons of cap room and could only get Stoudamire Bulls could only get Boozer to go with Derrick Rose. Forget about dwight Howard he has said he hates the hawks but we can hope and pray that we get lucky in the lottery but if we do that pick will probably leave like most stars do ie Chris Paul Deron Williams Lebron James

Bradley, did you ever think the Hawks ownership brought in Ferry to essentially run this franchise like the bobcats, under the new collective bargaining agreement, teams will make money. This is a salary dump to make money over the next 6 years and sell the team and move it in the process. You all my friends are being suckered. The numbers do not add up, fans dont show up with a winner, they are not going to show up on maybe. Dwight Howard couldnt win in Orlando, Chris Paul is not leaving Blake Griffin, if anything he will try and convince Dwight to go to LA.
This team will be in franchise purgatory for at least 5 years, in that time, Josh, who plays on athleticism will have declined, Al would be beaten up from playing Center. Additionally, NO ONE WANTS TO COME TO THE HAWKS.

What a great day to be a Hawks fan. Ferry has done more in one day to move this franchise forward than Sund did in four years. I wasn’t sure if either Joe or Marvin COULD be moved – to get rid of both of them in a few hours doesn’t even seem possible.

All this salary-shedding could be for naught if the Hawks whiff next summer in the free agent market, but we’ll worry about that later. Today is a day to be celebrated, because the Hawks, for the first time in a VERY long time, have hope as a franchise.

I imagine Marvin Williams is as glad to leave Atlanta as Bradley and others are to see him go. When Joe Johnson arrived, Williams opportunitites decreased as the Hawks increasingly favored perimeter shots. Factor in Josh Smith and the Hawks inability to field a strong point guard and it is no wonder that Willams’ minutes and stats diminished. In retrospect, it would be nice to have taken Chris Paul instead of Williams, but at the time Williams did not seem such a bad selection. I believe playing for the Hawks has been a significant factor in his lack of success. Let’s see how he does in Utah. I’m willing to bet he will more successful there than here.

IF and it’s is a big if, but if they can work a deal for Howard that would be very appealing to Chris Paul who would then have a big three of Paul, Howard, and Smith. Might not be Lebron and company but it’s close. Even if it doesn’t work out quite so well I suspect the Hawks a year from now will be much better than they were a month ago. Thank You Danny Ferry!

People calm down! Yes the Hawks are making good moves right now by shredding salary, but understand that this team will lose more games next year and probably will compete for the 8 playoff spot. As realistic fans we have to accept that because it is a part of the rebuilding process. Next years draft will have some really good players, but the Hawks dont have to spend the money on any free agents this year or next year. they can wait until they get the better FA market. I like what this team will look like 3 to 4 years from now. We are looking at major rebuilding projects for at least 3 years. I can accept that.

Marvin was a disappointment , but cannot be blamed for our inability to progress. If our goal is to win a championship then these moves allowed a possibility for that in the future. Fantastic move by Ferry. We’d seen what this team could do–good, but not going anywhere. And there was nowhere to turn with that JJ contract. To pull of a trade of JJ, as opposed to building flexibility with trading Josh or Horford– wow. Big time wow. Now the Hawks can get some other pieces if they want. This could end up being two-for-one– two players close to JJ’s caliber (ultimately), or one-for-one– a real superstar player for JJ. Nothing against JJ; not his fault that he was overpaid; who would say “no?”; but this gives the Hawks a huge opportunity to get better, and they STILL have their two best players over the last 2 years on the roster.

Can you tell I’m impressed?

That said, he got rid of the two players he needed to offload, and it’s great news that it only took him a couple of weeks to see what Sund never could, i.e. that this team’s ceiling would never be higher than the second round of the playoffs.

If Ferry pulls off the unthinkable and gets Chris Paul and Dwight Howard in here next year to go with Horford, Josh, Jeff, and Jenkins, then I may actually go to a Hawks game for once in my life. That’s a ridiculously good team that would compete for a championship. I can’t believe ASG actually did something right.

Bruce:

Here’s why the fuss: He’s been an executive for probably the most consistently-great team of the past 13 or so years, so he completely understands the blueprint for success. His moves thus far have demonstrated that he gets it in a way that the previous GMs never did.

Of course, tearing something down is much easier than re-building it (of course, trading Joe Johnson so quickly is certainly a feat in and of itself), so we still have to wait to see whether this will all work out in the end. So far, though, he’s done exactly as needed and I can’t see any reason for anyone to complain about that.

Josh Smith for 3

It almost seems like Danny Ferry is an evil genius. Not only did he clear some serious salary cap space, he also effectively crossed off the Nets from Dwight Howard’s list of desired destinations. Furthermore, he re-energized Josh Smith’s attitude towards the direction of the Hawks and obtained an extra 1st round pick for next year. It also doesn’t hurt, in the case of Dwight Howard, that he got Anthony Morrow in the trade, who is apparently very close friends with Dwight.

What a great day for Hawks fans. The future is well worth how weak the Hawks may be over the next year or so.

Mark Bradley, in the interest of full disclosure you might have reminded everybody that you advocated the Hawks signing Joe Johnson to that ridiculous max contract for 6 years. They had to do something to show fans they were serious, I think that was your “reasoning”.

Kudos to Danny Ferry for unloading the cancer Joe Johnson. We can now see if Jeff Teague can play point guard now that the cancer isn’t monopolizing the ball. I think we’ll see more out of Josh Smith and Al Horford if neither is traded now that the cancer isn’t monopolizing the ball. If they flash to the basket, they might see the ball. What a concept! And as a bonus Ferry also unloads one of the worst #2 draft picks in NBA history, Marvin Williams. I haven’t even looked to see exactly what Ferry got for the cancer and Williams, don’t care if it was nothing but salary cap relief. Addition by subtraction.

Blow it up! Joe Johnson is one sad sack who will make $50M more than he should have due to the incompetence of the ASG. He is a piece of garbage and will deservedly receive a chorus of boos every time he comes back to ATL. Marvin Williams is a nice guy and an overpaid bench player. I hope he saved some of that money because his next contract will be cut in half if not more. These guys are just two examples of the rabid incompetence we’ve experienced with ASG, Billy Knight, and Rick Sund. I hope today’s moves demonstrate that ASG is willing to hand the reigns over to Ferry to make intelligent basketball decisions. Something that’s been missing here for almost a decade.

“All this talk of Dwight coming to Atlanta please someone tell me why he would come here when he says he hates the Hawks”

1. He’s great friends with Josh Smith and Anthony Morrow

2. The Hawks are one of the few teams with the resources needed to acquire Dwight

3. The Hawks have a new GM who has clearly shown he’s dedicated to building a winner

4. The Hawks can entice him with the possibility of teaming him with Chris Paul, who the Hawks could also afford to give a max deal to

Notice I didn’t include that Atlanta is hometown. I’ve always thought that was an overrated draw for athletes. However, there are plenty of other compelling reasons for Dwight to consider the Hawks, and many of those reasons did not exist until today.

The Hawks will not rush to trade Josh Smith. He has certainly said he wants to leave Atlanta, but Ferry might be able to sway him

“The flurry of action, after years of restraint from the Hawks, has also made a fast impression on Smith, sources said. Ferry will have to sell him on Atlanta. Atlanta is about as untapped a market as you will ever find in the NBA, or in pro sports period. A championship team in Atlanta with a top 5 superstar would give Howard all the exposure he would ever want. Why go to NY (third banana to Yankees and Timmy Tim Tebow), LA (Kobe!), or Dallas (NBA is just to pass time waiting for Cowboys news)? If Atlanta could be the team to knock off LeBron, Howard could write his own ticket and he would become LEGENDARY in Atlanta.

Keep Smith and Horford, actually play them at SF and PF. Let Jenkins get a no-pressure season under him, Keep Morrow as a six man long range threat, and get Chris Paul. Remember how crazy Philips was in the Boston 2008 series? Imagine that 10x greater with that lineup. It will be a madhouse the likes of which we have not seen since Vick in 2004. I love how much room to manuver the hawks have now but while many are hopeful of a Paul/Howard combo it’s unlikely Paul really wants to be in NY. As for Howard, he got a crude wake up call today I say hawks will attemp to ship horford and some picks and one or two of those new Brooklyn contracts for Howard if it falls through hawks will gladly wait till next summer. If Howard happens now then I see a Teague resigning as well as Smith and even Morrow. That gives the hawks three happy Atlanta natives(check me on morrow I know he went to GT not sure if he’s a Georgian) then use whatever cap space left to sign a SG Ellis would be cool but im sure there will be nice secondary options if Monta is too expensive. That would create a great starting five Teague,Ellis or other fa SG,SF or PF (maybe a three team trade for Howard and we grab scola),Smith,Howard that’s a contender

Yes, Danny Ferry has made it clear he is the undisputed Executive of the Year before the season even begins. Just don’t stop NOW…….

Go all in and give up Horford, Teague, and the 1st round pick we just got….maybe another expiring contract if you have to, but go get DWIGHT!!

Al Horford is the player that must go….and I LOVE AL HORFORD!!! But in this game of NBA Poker this off season Danny Ferry is killing the field. Anyone that plays Poker knows that the Man with the BIG STACK is the unheralded Bully of the table. With Orlando out of the picture and Dwight publicly disgruntled, NO WAY Orlando passes on a starting PG (Teague) AND an All-Star (Horford). Add to that the fact that Josh Smith Starting PF and Anthony Morrow potential mainstay SG either starting or backing up John Jenkins.

Any Hoo…No Way Dwight leaves his 2 best buds AND his hometown in the winds…..same goes for Smoove. Make the trade, Danny, then sit Josh and Dwight down and tell em….this is YA’LL CITY and when I’m done Wheelin and Dealin YA’LL will have the opportunity to bring a Ring to your Hometown!! Dwight wants to go to tbe traded to the Nets. Do nto know how that will work with the trade going down. Hope it doesnt stop the trade….

Maybe with Ferry running things, Dwight and Josh can get together and talk about playing together in ATL. Its a new era and with both being local and the Hawks having money and flexibility, well, stranger things have happened.

Regardless, no matter what happens, everything is going to be OK with Ferry pulling strings, good draft picks coming in via trade (if its held onto) and after sucking this year, instead of being stuck in limbo…..

A new and VERY good coach could also be in the works with the extra cash saved in 2012…..

The deal is NOT final yet. Lets believe it will be!

Dwight has said he will not re-sign with anyone but the Nets. That could stop this trade because if Williams resigns with the nets, they will not sign Dwight too unless they trade Williams or Joe for Dwight. It wouldSUCK if the Nets are using the Hawks to get the Magic to move Dwight now. That would suck. I do not know if its too late for the Nets to back out and if they did what the consequences would be. But if I am the Nets, I would be saying hold on and lets see what we can work out with the Magic…..wouldnt you? I mean Dwight wants to go to the Nets. If the magic do nto trade him to the nets when he has said he will NOT resign to ANY other team the magic trade him to, that means the Magic will not likely get jack for Dwight since the otherteams KNOW that they cant resign him. The other teams would want a sign and trade most likely. Dwight is screwing with the Magic and the Nets and the Hawks at this point and with this deal, I would think. How can the nets not say hold on, we have a new development….Do not you think the Nets and Magic are talking right now? How can they afford Joe, Williams and Dwight? They cant. Maybe the trade agreement is binding, I dont know since nothing is official or can be signed until the 11th. Time will tell.

Oh yeah, Braves lost ANOTHER Monday game….

I don’t get it. You can not build around a coward punk like Josh Smith. You can not let that fool run the team telling you who he wants here in his buddy Dwight. We gave Joe away. That was not a trade that was a giveaway we got nothing of value back for Joe. We are not getting Howard people. Brooks, Lopez, Wallace, and how many ever 1st round picks it takes are going to the Magic for Howard and some bad contracts from the Magic.

Our end game is not going to be pretty for a while and this is not a city that will sit through a total rebuild. Josh has to go, but Ferry can not keep giving away assets.

Oh but we DID get something back for Joe…a 1st round draft pick AND 20 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR TO SPEND ON WHOEVER WE PLEASE! Hawks might sign a Chris Paul. Thats like trading Joe for a Chris Paul basically. We got 20 miilion dollars a year PLUS players for Joe and a 1st round draft pick! 60 million total dollars for Joe Johnson. Pretty sweet trade if you ask me. Come summer 2013 or sooner, Hawks will be like the New York Yankees! Add Marvins salary and thats almost 30 million extra to go with Ivan and Al and Zaza and Teague and maybe even Josh. Maybe. Josh better get his heart in the Hawks team or he will miss out too. He is going to want big money and I would rather give it to someone who wanted to be here and who would play smart instead of doing his own thing. The city will sit through an entire rebuild. A ONE year entire rebuild at MOST. Win and they will come. Who knows what Ferry plans to do and how soon. The right players might be available now if they can come terms. All I know is that Ferry is making the moves he had to make to be able to do ANYTHING! The rebuild WILL be over come 2013. Dont trade Joe and there will NOT be any rebuild and we will be sitting around waiting on Joes contract to expire 3 years from now for the most part and signing role players for nothing and signign NOTHING we NEED. No SIGNIFICANT additions.

For all you naysayers, Dwight Howard might want to come to Atlanta if the franchise were run completely differently. I am sure Josh Smith is reconsidering his desire to leave too. Atlanta is the 7th biggest market and had the 4th or 5th highest TV ratings for the NBA finals. Chris Paul wanted to be drafted by the Hawks originally. Atlanta will support an NBA franchise that shows it’s serious about winning by getting the stars needed to do so.

Danny Ferry retained $80 Million in salary with these moves. Why do I have the suspicion that we may see an Atlanta Celtics reunion soon?

See, I think that the Hawks can compete for Howard now. I also believe that Howard will see and believe in Danny Ferry to build a championship team. Plus, Josh Smith is still here, who has been trade bait for about 4 years now.

Also, Dwight’s from Atlanta (I remember him playing out in Norcross at that Christian Academy. Plus, he can go back to his home church.) Atlanta is an upside.

So to take inventory, the Hawks looks like they’re committed to making a change, they play in Dwight’s hometown, they got the money and his old AAU buddy is on the phone.

The Hawks have had four teams in 48 years on par with this one. The best was the one we inherited from St. Louis, the Doc and Dominique teams were a close second, last season’s team and perhaps the Mutombo, Smith teams just behind. The nail in the coffin for the St Louis team was the failed Pete Maravich experiment, netting Dean Meminger, we brought in Reggie to put the D &D team over the top. He did have a nice perm, i must say. The Mutumbo team was dissolved for the Pau Gasol draft and trade, which we squandered for another over-rated homeboy. Hawks History tells us that when we dismantle a good team for something better, it’s a long process back to the level we weren’t satisfied with to begin with. At least there are some good blue prints on the rack for how not to go about it. Hopefully Mr. Ferry took a look at those first.

Love the deal for Marvin. But why does Babcock pt 2. think he will lure Howard or Chris Paul without the core JJ, Josh or Horford. Draft picks these days are all projects ( exhibit A Marvin Williams.) How many NBA teams have 2 all start players & you feel you should dump them for the the unknown?
The NBA model is you draft & keep your stars. The only franchise player to leave their team was Lebron. to go to South Beach over Cleveland Last ime I checked this was not South Beach. Tell me what about this deal makes me want to go through the 12-13 season. We tried this before & it took 8 years to get back to the playoffs. Thanks for bringing the Bobcats to Atlanta.
Welcome to the Thrash Compactor will be our new slogan for the next 5 years. Then the team will be sold & moved to Seattle because the owners will complain about poor attendance.
Thanks Ferry for nothing!

Great job thus far! But it all will be for naught if DF brings Dwight Howard to Atlanta. Howard is a cancer! Plus the type of money it would take to get him would put the Hawks back in the same “huge contract-poor attitude” situation it had with Johnson. Howard may be a great talent but he’s also a royal pain in the ass to coach. The Hawks don’t need another problem.

Ferry is a basketball man, it is in his blood. He was an amazing college player. Not bad in the pros, but skill was not as good as his brains.

His contacts in this game must be some of the best. Not only was his father a player and executive in the NBA, he comes form Duke, the biggest feeder to the NBA. The administration at Duke is the same as when he was there and I am sure Coach K will refer any talent he sees to him wth a scouting report along with a dozen other Duke alum coaching in the college ranks.

Think about it… if they hadn’t picked up Joe Johnson, Belkin wouldn’t have gone lawsuit crazy, and we’d still have the Thrashers. The so-called “atlanta spirit” group are a bunch of jerks. I hope the Hawks leave town too, and I hope Philips Arena falls down with their grandmothers standing in the middle of it.

COACH. What about a legitimate NBA coach to bring focus to all these average players for now, but potentially great players next year. And why do we have to wait until 2013 to go after Howard, or another great center? As I understand, we NOW have room to deal. Don’t want to get too optimistic, but hopefully Danny has more moves in mind before the dust settles. I’ve waited since Pete Maravich was here and hoped since then.

I understand you guys wanted to break this team up at all costs, but I have been a fan through the rough times and I don’t have tons of faith that the right moves will be made from here. Do you really think Chris Paul is going to leave LA and Blake Griffin? I don’t. Dwight Howard will not sign here and is getting ready to be traded to the Nets. We have helped create another monster in Brooklyn now. These superstars that everyone thinks we will be able to sign do not grow on trees and I strongly doubt we will be able to lure one here. Ferry gets an A for effort but I don’t see how we are going to be able to take the huge jumps forward like everyone is acting like.

Kudos to the owners-they give Ferry a 6 year contract & within a week watch him/allow him to deal their their franchise player for scraps & trade away Marvin. Dont think selling the owners on the idea of trading Marvin would have been difficult-but Johnson…Larry Drew has got to be out of there soon too btw.

Honestly, who will we be able to sign in the coming years. Bradley, your optimism is wasted if you are banking on Chris Paul leaving LA or Howard. Who else is there to make us any better than we have been the past 5 years? People calm down on the lotto team idea. Blowing the team completly up is a Terrible idea, if it was that easy, the Clippers wouldnt of been terrible for 20+ straight years. With Smith/ Horford, plus the shooting of Morrow/ Jenkins and driving ability of Teague, the Hawks will again be a top 5 team in the East next year!
Who will be better? Not Indiana after loosing Hibbert. Not Orlando after loosing Howard.

ATL got suckered, superiorblogman hit it right on the head. Howard, Williams, Johnson, Wallace and some fill ins like Miami. Orlando will get the best players and draft picks. Ferry was not brought in here to bring a winner, he was brought in to gut the team and possibly sell it later or operate on the cheap and make money. Doesnt matter what you think, JJ is a highly regarded player around the league. ATL is now a scrub team, and will be for a while, the draft has sucked for years, you maybe get one player, wow.

I think we’re going to see L Drew replaced by the midway point of the season-Ferry is making bold moves-who’s on short list? Sloan is an obvious name, but think they will go w/someone younger-who’s the #2 guy at San Antonio? My guess is Ferry will hire a younger coach-someone more in the mode of Scott Brooks/Spoelstra…

ATL Spirit still sucks

Should have traded Joe for the Islanders since that trade and ridiculous contract was one of the reasons the Thrashers left. I mean, really, this was a smart basketball move only if you can actually sign someone next year. Going on the track record of previous seasons, I would say there is next to zero chance of that happening especially with the same ownership group still in place here here. They already did their damage which players have already seen. Ferry would be executive of the year if he could have shipped those idiots out of town with Johnson. Until they go, there is no hope for this franchise and they just went from being in the playoffs to being out for a long time.

BravesFan79

And people can forget about Howard. Whoever he is traded to he will sign a long term contract with. And CP3 isnt leaving Blake Griffin/ or LA. The player Ferry should be going after, is Roy Hibbert. But after the Blazers offered him a max deal, i doubt its worth offering that much $.

More blog speculation about Dwight Howard and CP3 than what we’ve got in house. The odds of attracting one or both of those guys is still very, very slim. Sure, we’ll have the cap space, but all these dreams of grandeur may be wishful thinking…something that none of us need to do after years of suffering. What will the Hawks look like THIS year? Can we still contend? Can we still use some of these new players as trade bait to solidify the team THIS year?

I dont think Ferry was hired to gut the team-they could have had a “fall” guy gut the team. The team will make money from selling out the arena, merchandise, etc.

Josh Smith is the problem with the Hawks, his immaturity has been the problem with the Hawks from Day-1 since he was drafted.

The guys that got moved were traded because of the money/contracts, but Josh causes crappy play on the court and hurts the team more than the 2 guys that got traded.

Looking at this very simply, the Hawks have 2 players under contract beyond next season – Horford (3 more yrs, 12 million per yr) and Teague (1 yr, 3.5 million – qualifying offer…whatever that means). This gives Ferry incredible flexibility to shape this team however he wants.

My estimation is that he doesn’t want Josh unless Josh changes the type of player he is (fewer long range jump shots, no more pretending to be a point forward, less time spent complaining on the court, less time spent complaining off the court, etc). And I’d be willing to bet a good bit of cash that he has absolutely no interest in Dwight Howard and all his baggage.

I think he’s going to try to fill the team with team oriented players. And it may take some time. So be patient.

Really?

Be careful what you wish for… as I’ve said across the last few years, when we last blew up the team, until yesterday, this is what we got. The first year of the blow up we won 13 whole games. The second year we doubled it to 26. I think we added 10 more the next year and then the past 5 or so seasons. If you think 13K fans are few wait until we are in mid March trying to get to double digit wins.

Trade Al Horford. Some of you bloggers are just plain stupid. If he plays the entire series against the Celtics we win . With him, Dwight Howard, and Josh Smith you have a nucleus that can beat the Heat, Lakers or for that matter anyone potentially in the playoffs. But J.Smoove must realize that he’s a beast when he drives to the basket. He’s got to quit shooting the long range jump shot. Who besides me wanted to reach through the TV and bitch slap him for taking that 3 point shot with the game on the line . The Hawks win the series with the Celtics if he drives to the basket. If big D would sign with the Hawks we become a Championship quality type team. GOOOOOOO HAWKS.

I really am shocked Ferry was able to pull this off. Then again, the Nets appear to still be convinced they can get Howard and Williams after trading for JJ, but it looks like they pretty much have to send away the rest of the team except for Gerald Wallace to get it done as well as forfeit their draft for the next several years. That could be a problem with depth, but I guess its worth a shot if they can keep Howard.

Danny Ferry is no genius, he screwed up Cleveland, if he couldnt get players around Lebron, there isnt a Lebron here, so why come, Hawks had money before, no one came, Tree said a full arena and merchandise sales, dude, they didnt sell it out when Niq was here. The demographics show most people that can afford to go to games arent from ATL and dont identify with the team, therefore, low attendance. Has anyone noticed, even if you build through the draft, the players are young and most take years to develop. JJ wasnt the problem, look who they put around dude, the bench was always horrible and dude had to guard 1,2, and 3, plus play 40+ minutes. But anyway, big trouble coming.

Great moves by Ferry! The Hawks maxed out on the core four three years ago. If Sund had any guts he wouldn’t have resigned Johnson two years ago (wasted money). Marvin has been a bust from day one. The next one to move is Josh Smith. His game is too erratic. The Lakers want him….send him out there for Gasol. The Hawks will probably be the 7th or 8th seed this coming year in the playoffs with all these moves. But the will be in prime position to pick off some key free agents next year that could have them competing for a top spot in the east. Great moves!!!

Folks danny ferry sucks. This guy could not make it happen with Lebron and you jokers think he can make it work with josh?

Your coach hasn’t done squat and you think NBA stars want to move to the A. have you folks not watched how you are portrayed on t.v?

The NBA is a league built strictly on talent. No talent no wins. Ask Doc Rivers. Ask Dwayne Wade what it was like playing after the championship team was dismantled.

You traded a six time all star away and did not get any all stars back. The two most talented teams made it to the finals and the four most talented teams made it to the conference finals.

Besides, NBA players just want to hang out in Atlanta not play here. why don’t folks understand this?

Atlanta is the last destination for an NBA legend or any great athlete for that matter. You folks just do not realize it.

NY, LA, Boston, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, D.C. San Fran are way ahead of ATL. OKC was built through the draft. They stunk for three straight years and got lucky three straight years.

The JJ move, albeit celebrated by many, leaves the team with nothing for next season (except hopes for the 2013 season). I didn’t like the JJ contract, but you had to do it at the time to keep the 2nd round playoff team intact. Now, it will be interesting to see how patient we all are when we begin to miss the 20pts / game and double teams that JJ caused which left open shots for others. Without the double teams on JJ or a JJ calibre player, the hawks are not a playoff team – especially with Charlotte and the Nets improving their rosters. Always be careful what you strongly wish for….DHoward would be great back in Atlanta, but with JJ gone and the strong possibility that you will have to include Teague and Horford in the package, that leaves DHoward and Josh….meaning Josh will be 3/4 and forced to the outside (where everyone cringes) as to not clog up the middle for superman.

Overall, the trades are a strategic move by the GM in the first 30 days and a no lose situation for him, but patience will be needed myself and other season tix holders and generic Atl fans. I remember the stretches of no playoff games and was not happy then, but relatively “happier” when we were on national television and a consistent 1st / 2nd round playoff team.

One more thing, the Nets will be competing for the eastern conference ship next season if DWill signs – even without DHoward…not getting legit NBA players (healthy) for an undisputed all star is not good for the fans….good for the GM because he is here long-term (5+ years). It’s years 1-4 that the fans will suffer and be calling for Ferry’s head after year 2….unless LBJ wants to reunite with him.

Talent = top 1-2 PG in the game + top 10 scorer in the game + top 15-20 big man in the game + top 5 shooter in the game (celts)
Hawks don’t even come close and are even farther away now…you can have 8 no names plus 3-4 of the best players in the world and have a championship calibre / contending team….not have 11-12 no names and one all-star…..The “T” word is relative and applicable on a team by team basis!

However, I will reserve my judgement until he can get some quality players and the team starts winning big games. That’s his achilles heel to me because of what happened in Cleveland.

Keep in mind Howard is coming off the back injury and won’t be ready at the start of the season. We need shooters if we are going to compete against the defenses of Chicago, Miami, and Boston. Smith at 3 scares me a little because of this. Morrow and Jenkins need to stay. Even if we don’t get Howard or CP3, we have flexibility to get better with other FA’s. We’re still a 40 win team this year if Al can stay healthy with Teague getting better and Smith at peak of skills.

I agree with most that Dwight or CP don’t want to play in Atlanta. At this point, why would you want Dwight Howard? I have lost all respect for this immature home grown kid. If he does not get his way he wants out. Talented but has issues he needs to overcome. Sorry, Atlanta does not need this problem child.

To all those people saying the Hawks will suck next year, WE KNOW THIS. The things is, we’ll take it knowing we’ll get better the following year. Ferry did well breaking up this oil-slicked track meet of a “Core”.

Hawks are not going into lottery territory. This team is not being torn down. Marvin was a non-presence. Joe was good and someone asked earlier who would replace his 18-4-4. That was a huge problem … for the second highest salary in the league, you HAVE to get much more production than that.

I’m really liking what Ferry has done with the team so far. We needed a change in strategy moving forward.

That being said, I wonder if Ferry would have drafted differently in the first round if he knew that he would be able to move Marvin & ISO Joe?

Billy Knight would have traded for 6 forwards- 4 named Williams. We should re-sign Ivan, Kirk and the rest can go (including the twin towers- Dampier and Collins). We’ve now got 2 point guards, Jenkins, Farmar and Morrow can all shoot, with Smith (if he stays), Horoford and Zsa Zsa up front. Still a 500 team with plenty of $ next year for Chris Paul.. Oh- what will we do now in late game siuations without Joe to dribble down the clock and throw up a prayer!

I can’t help but think the Hawks should have asked more from the Nets. The only real value we’re getting is the mid-first round pick, Morrow, and possibly Farmar. By all means, dump Johnson(’s contract), but this trade is as close as giving him away as Ferry could manage.

Ok, what have Danny accomplish in his history of being a MG ! Danny only accomplishment is drafting Lebon James and he couldn’t keep him in Cleveland.

Really, do you folks think Howard or CP3 will Play for the Hawks, NOPE IT WON’T HAPPEN ! The Hawks is NOT a championship team and never will be on that Level. The Hawks is the Cubs of the NBA………..

I like having so much salary flexibility but we need to start accumulating some draft picks too. We can’t do it all with free agent signings. Maybe we can trade Josh for a few picks.

But at least we haven’t traded away any of our future picks, so we have our full allotment going forward.

Maybe they think they need those since they plan on having a big guy in the middle.

For everyone saying that Ferry failed in Clev in acquiring talent around LBJ, maybe it had nothing to do with Ferry but rather nobody wanting to play in Cleveland. I mean who wouldn’t want to live and play in the metropolis of Cleveland. When LBJ, Wade, and Bosh we’re talking about where to play, why do you think they decided on South Beach and not Cleveland?

I don’t care if the Hawks win 5 games or 50 next season. We needed to do something and this is a magnificent start. Joe Johnson didn’t care about improving the Hawks and bringing them to the next level. Joe got his payday and didn’t really give a crap outside of that. It was evident to any and all. Marvin Williams: what can you say. What a dud. Full of promise, but just never did anything with it. I wish him the best of luck in Utah or for any other team he plays for. Welcome Danny Ferry. This is what we’ve needed for years!

The JJ contract should have never been offered in the 1st place. But, they were already 4th in the East (without Horford) now we trade our best player for a bunch of no names for the purposes of creating cap space NEXT season. All they are going to do is take steps back this season, and then overpay for another free agent or two the season after next and at best the Hawks will return right back to the 4th seed where they were already at last season. I just don’t see the point in getting rid of JJ and not receiving an All Star back in return that can help the team win NOW. The window for winning and short and the Hawks were on the door step. Have fun next season watching guys that nobody even knows run up and down the highlight factory!

Bottom line: Hawks write off 2012-13 season, and unless they can resign Josh Smith (who will not be happy playing for a worse team this year) will have plenty of cap space but no players saince we’ll have two replace two all star caliber players. Johnson and Smith. I’d have much rather gone for everything in 2012 and worry about 2013 then. I hope I have to eat these words, but unless there is already an agreement in place to resign Smith, this is a poor deal that will doom us for the forseeable future. Bring back Billy Knight who managed to parlay four first round draft picks in one season to a decade of mediocity, only to be rescued by Joe Johnson and a maturing Josh Smith.

@ATLBRAVE The “win now” approach obviously hasnt worked for the hawks the past few years. This is the model for the new nba. Deal with it. The hawks have also been “on the doorstep” ever since the took boston to 7 games. Ferry is trying to build a contender. Contenders dont happen over night.

No doubt Joe Johnson did nothing wrong signing the ridiculous contract. His problem is he never did anything off the court to help the franchise. He actively disliked Atlanta fans and never tried to win them over. If you are going to spend money on someone, it has to be someone who helps sell tickets. 40 wins from an excruciatingly boring group of basketball players is not going to make ATL excited.

No-one is against what this move will do for the cap next summer but we should all be against what it will do for the team right now and that effects next summer. Josh Smith needs to be moved to SF and Al to PF. You have to evaluate this players at these positions in order to see where to go next. Zaza is not a starting level C. I don’t want to watch him costing us games by not being able to finish and not being able to protect the rim again this year. Go get a starting C so you can move Josh to SF and Al to PF and evaluate your two best players before moving on with your remake or risk overpaying players that can not even play the position they are needed to play effectively.

Ferry! Ferry! Ferry!

This guy traded Marvin for Devin Harris a point guard desperately needed, he managed to unload Joe Johnson’s bloated unyielding contract, and he’s in talks to get Howard.

He should keep Teague and Horford, and try to trade a disgruntled Josh Smith for a good swingman, (Deng anyone?), or keep Smith and sign a good swingman through free agency, and do everything to convince Howard to come to ATL.

I like the new look Hawks already!
