Ok, that makes sense MB, maybe they dont need a center that bad. But i do know they need some guys that can put it in the basket!

Great analysis, mark.

It’s funny. In my mind I no longer included Marvin in that Core Four. Considering he hasn;t been able to to even maintain a starting role, I had included TEAGUE as one of the core going forward.

MB, what would you say is the greatest area of need with this Hawks team going forward?

I’m guessing starting wing (SF or SG) to start next to JJ and provide defense/scoring?

The Hawks need to trade Josh Smith. He’s already made it clear that he doesn’t want to stay here. If you know you’re going to lose him after the 2013 season, it seems foolish to not try to trade him now–especially given that his value should be sky high after his fine season and he’s the most valuable trade chip the team has. No point in letting him walk as a free agent.

The Hawks need for the ownership to open their checkbooks & close their mouths and let Danny do the job for which they hired him.

Agreed. The talk of keeping Sund around in any capacity is foolish, IMHO. They should let Danny Ferry have total control, for better or worse, and see what happens.

Hawks gave Ferry 6 years, because he is tearing this roster down and rebuilding

Kate, Rick-

I get the sense that Rick Sund wants to get away from here as quickly as possible. He refused to re-up as GM earlier this year and has to have the known the talks with Ferry have been ongoing for some time now.

I doubt Danny Ferry really wants Sund around either. But simply dismissing him and telling the world he has no desire or need to consult with his predecessor could come across poorly.

Mark,

Case can be made for Josh Smith growing over Horford, but Ferry was quoted as saying he’s looking to build the organization and team with players who are willing to play hard, smart, pass the ball, etc., and it seems to me that Horford fits this description (basically of the San Antonio model) better than Smoove. Does Ferry have the ability to turn Josh into that kind of player from the executive sweet?

I do agree with you on Josh’s potential though and believe he could be the focal point of this team IF he can get his act together (completely) mentally. I’m just not sure Ferry will be able to do that.

Good report.

MB, I telecommuted today, also.

Josh needs to stop bitching and moaning when he doesn’t get a call and get his butt back up the floor.

It means they are drafting a non flashy player at 23. Look at Taylor from Vandy.

I agree that the fans have diluted themselves thinking that a C like Fab Melo or Festus Ezeli at 23 is going to come in and start or be anything more than a backup at best. On the other hand, you could make a real move to move up and get a Drummond who could move players like Al and Josh up one position. Finally, I think anyone that continues to state the same sad song that Joe is untradeable is also diluted. Joe is not a bad contract for everyone you just have to find a team with a couple of bad contracts themselves.

Move up to getn Kendall Marshall then trade Josh and Marvin and maybe jeff aswell to the lakers for Gasol and finally give us a true front line. Please for the life of me stop running out this same team that will not get anywhere.

Joe is your only player on the team that can get his own shot. Big Al cant go left and Josh refuses to play in the post so Joe is your only guy you can count on to get you a bucket you cant trade him. Josh has been in the L dang hear 10 years stop saying potential he is what he is and will not get better and will still make dumb mistakes that 8thgraders make the lakers would take him and Marvin and maybe anotehr player for a guy like Gasol so why has a deal like that not been made or discussed????????????????????

K-Dogg,

Joe cannot get his own shot when he has a legitimate defender on him and when he does create his own shot its usually low percentage. Not only that it deflates the team and momentum when Joe dribbles the air out of the ball. Thus, I would rather have a player like JJ Reddick (a younger Ray Allen) who can move without the ball and come off screens to hit open jump shots. That is, after all, the offense that Larry Drew runs.

Pau Gasol is not worth Marvin and another player (much less Josh and Teague.. really?!?) on our team that is under contract right now, nor would I waste a pick on him, although I will admit that he would work great as a shooting big in our offense. Plus, pretty sure the contract would not work – thank you Joe Johnson.

It is undeniable that Josh Smith became a different player in the second half of the season last year and in the playoffs despite being hurt. Yes, he still made a lot of the same Smoove bone-headed decisions, but he improved his game and over all maturity and leadership. His stats will show that and I guess we’re at a stalemate there because I’m too lazy to go look them up and lay them out for you so you’d have to go look for yourself.

Kendall Marshall is a liability in the NBA as everything, but a passer. Teague is much better for this team than Marshall and that’s coming from an avid Carolina fan. Teague is a better defender, better finisher at the rim, a much improved passer, and just finished his first full season as a starter. He’s going to be a great point guard if the Hawks can fix the clutter around him.

Maybe Al or Josh for evans and the number five pick. Hawks Draft Drummond, who is a center. Who could be our next Dwight.the kings get either or to pair with Cousins. Plus they have enough draft picks know they need veterans. Evans would get a change of scenery.

Johnson bounces the ball for 20 seconds and then passes the ball to Josh for a 30 footer….he is allergic to the lane….he doesnt have leadership skills….thats not a knock, he has a great game for a team like dallas or the lakers who already have go to guys….trade him or amnesty the guy already…he kills the chemistry of the team…try to resign josh, if he is willing or trade him for draft picks and start rebuilding around horford and teague…and resign ivan, mcgrady, and green for the bench

K-dogg, that is the dumbest thing I have read here. Maybe you should read Boxxiethebulls comments because that is closer to the truth. I guess you are ok with a max contract guy averaging 19 points a game but for me that is just flat out robbery. Get rid of Joe.

Mark Bradley,

Take a moment from cheeleading for Danny Ferry. I am a soldier who was stationed in San Antonio and Danny Ferry was not a necessary component down there. His prescence will not redefine the fate of Atlanta in a positive way. Please mention this link to him about picking up a free agent that can take our team up a notch to championship level. The team as constructed only needs a on-court leader who can keep team in line when things get tight. Bring us Andre Miller!!

Miller is the guy who can lead the team, mentor Teague and allow Larry Drew to actually get a play run instead of going Iso-Joe or being relegated to watching Josh Smith throw up a long two-pointer. Andre Miller is the Hawks’ breakthrough player. Just in case you didn’t get the page, I resubmitted.

this article below reflects my suggestions that it is not the talent but the lack of structure being the downfall of the Hawks. And that, my fellow friends, is a solvable problem.

Trade Josh for a 1st rd. pick this year or a 1st rd. next year.
Use the salary space for a rent a player and see if you can move up in draft with the two 1stb rounders.
Only a suggestion.

the only reason the Hawks will trade Josh if the organization is stupid. you don’t trade a stud like Josh, for whom? a draft pick? all draft picks are based on protential. We are know Josh is a stud. so that is out of the question. Marvin should be done as Hawks. The hawks need a big. forget about Fab Melo he will not be there when the hawks pick. We can only hope Sullinger falls to us, if he does get em right away. Trade Hinrich, gone are Stackhouse,Radmanovic, Dampier,Collins. we need a strong bench, so keep Ivan, Green, Zaza, Tracy. am on the fence with Pargo.

Surprised to see that one mock has Fab Melo available for the Hawks. Hope that happens. Melo at C, Horford at PF and Josh and SF would be pretty strong.

Another year of the “Core Four” will only increase fan apathy. How many years does someone have to play in the league before fans and sports writers quit talking about his potential?

I was a big time joe fan and i still like joe but the best thing the hawks can do is trade joe get a solid two and veteran point to me josh is the one player to hold on to i like horford to but its not a choice on who to take between him and josh. Josh

There is a possibility for a Joe Johnson trade that could be overlooked. Billionaire Paul Allen’s Portland Trailblazers would be a team that could afford Johnson’s salary and the team could make use of his skills. By most mock drafts the Trailblazers are poised to draft the best point guard and the best center within the first ten selections of the draft. Now that Brandon Roy is looking into returning to the NBA but cannot return to Portland until 2014, the Trailblazers may be interested in getting something for Roy by trading his rights. I know it is a stretch but a Johnson trade to Portland will give them a veteran shooting guard to match with their rookie point guard, rookie center, and star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge. Atlanta in return would require a sign and trade Nicolas Batum, Jamal Crawford and Roy. And if they want to complete their starting lineup the Hawks could throw in Marvin Williams for their second round picks. This sound like wishful thinking but both teams satisfy their needs. Portland would immediately have one of the best starting lineups in the Western Conference and the Hawks will be able to get rid of the salary albatross that will keep them from adding significant talent for the next three years.

Y do yall want to trade a twenty six year old who getting g better and is your teams best player for a 34 year old who is getting worse??? It defys logic to me. This game is about speed now, look at the teams in the finals. Look how old the Lakers looked against okc and you want to bring the dinosaur here with slow al & aging jj smh. While La a trade us those two years 40mill then nab DH for Bynum and have the best defensive front court in da league…
