Pigskin pickin’: Tech wins its division; UGA takes the SEC title

The Honey Badger had his way when last they met. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

The Honey Badger had his way last season. But that was then. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Georgia will go 11-1 and win the SEC East. Then it will beat LSU for the SEC championship. And then … well, what destination traditionally awaits the SEC champion? (Hint: It ain’t beautiful downtown Shreveport.)

With that, we commence our annual long-range look at college football, which is guaranteed to please absolutely no one. If I pick your team to do less well than you think it should, you’ll be miffed;  if I pick your team to do better, you’ll gripe about the Bradley Jinx. Which didn’t, I should note, seem to trouble Georgia overmuch last season: The Bulldogs, as predicted, did take the East. And this year, for better or worse, I foresee better.

Georgia Tech will upset Virginia Tech on Labor Day night and will win the ACC Coastal Division. I can’t really believe I’m making this call. (Perhaps you share the feeling.) But before you succumb to an outbreak of whooping scoff, check the Jackets’ schedule.  They’ll play only one road game — that at Clemson — between Sept. 4 and Nov. 2, and their final three ACC games are against Maryland (2-10 last season), North Carolina (new coach plus a bowl ban) and Duke (still Duke).

One game doesn’t usually a season make — you’ll recall Georgia losing to Boise State — but history does note that the Tech-Tech winner has become Coastal champ every year there has been a Coastal. History also notes that Virginia Tech doesn’t always start quickly. History also notes that Paul Johnson is pretty good as an underdog. I’m thinking he coaches the heck out of that game and his team goes 9-3 (losses to Miami, Clemson and Georgia) and wins the division on a tiebreaker. I’m also thinking nobody else will agree — except maybe Paul Johnson.

Tech's Tevin Washington against the Hokies last year. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Georgia Tech's Tevin Washington against the Hokies last year. That didn't end so well, either. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

LSU will lose a regular-season game but win the SEC West. Maybe the loss will come at Auburn, or at Florida, or even at Texas A&M. Just for the heck of it, let’s go with the new-to-the SEC Aggies. I do not, however, believe LSU will lose against Alabama on Nov. 3 or Arkansas on Nov. 24. The men of Miles will rise up for those Titanic tilts. (I also don’t think Bama will be quite as good as advertised, and I can’t see John L. Smith lifting Arkansas to great heights.)

Once again, South Carolina will beat Georgia but lose the SEC East. Because the Gamecocks will lose at LSU on Oct. 13 and at Florida the next week. (The Gators will start to get well this season. They’ll go 9-3.) Another 10-win season will leave South Carolina frozen out of the SEC title game — mostly because of the imbalance in SEC scheduling. Steve Spurrier is right: Somebody does need to do something about that.

Speaking of significant openers … Tennessee cannot lose to North Carolina State on Aug. 31. Derek Dooley’s Vols could be positioned for a rebound — provided they beat the Wolfpack in Game 1 of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff. And State, which was 8-5 last season even after letting Russell Wilson leave for Wisconsin, won’t be easy. But this is a must game for the Vols, and I’m thinking they’ll take it. Besides, the SEC always beats the ACC, right?

Hold that thought. I like Clemson over Auburn the next night in the same building. Cam Newton: Gone awhile. Gus Malzahn: Gone to Arkansas State. Auburn’s 2010 national championship will soon be rendered one of those how-did-that-happen comets if Gene Chizik doesn’t think of something fast, and I’m not sure G-Chiz is about to make us say, “Gee whiz!” The schedule’s not that bad; I just don’t see Auburn being that good. Eight wins, tops.

Florida State will win the ACC because somebody has to. League loyalists point to the good coaches entering the conference — Mike London of Virginia, Al Golden of Miami, Larry Fedora of North Carolina — as reason to believe. Honesty compels me to confess that I’ve rarely seen the ACC appear less imposing. (So why am I picking Clemson over Auburn? Because I’m stupid, that’s why.)

Southern Cal will go undefeated behind their boy genius coach and will play Georgia for the BCS title in Miami. I’m not going to make a pick on this one yet — I’ve done enough damage for one day, don’t you think? — except to say this: Lane Kiffin absolutely owns Mark Richt. (OK, so they’ve only met once.)

Kidding aside, I really do think Georgia has the makings of a championship team. Great defense. Good quarterback. Lots of running backs. I have the same concerns as you about the offensive line, but no team is without blemish. And the schedule — no Alabama, no Arkansas, no LSU, not even a Boise State — looks mightily inviting. Not to heap pressure on anyone, but you have to wonder: If Richt doesn’t play for the BCS title with this team, will he ever?

There was a ton of imbalance in the SEC when UF and UT were winning championships in the 90s and ’00s, where was Spurrior then? UF and UT are pretty bad right now, so there is imbalance. Know what? In 3-4 years this will change, too, and the west wont be as dominant. This schedule thing is out of hand being propelled by idiots who think last year is the only season the SEC has ever had and this and every season from now on will be just like last year’s.

The problem with UGA this year is we won’t know how good they are. If they lose to South Carolina, but beat everyone else, they wouldn’t deserve to get into Nat. Champ. game–they woudl have lost to the only good team on their sked. Spurrier is right- it is a JOKE that UGA doesn’t have to play Bama, LSU, or Arky. And no out of conference games (Tech sucks and doesn’t count).

You will get bashed unmercifully for these picks. VT lost a ton on offense but returns a lot on defense. GT could win it like you predict. Not far fetched at all. GT goes 10-4 after winning the division and losing to FSU and finally win a bowl game. Tech folks would take that in a heartbeat

My expectations for UGA are very high and I am tired of the excuses pouring out of Athens. This defense is legit, Murray is capable but needs a swift kick in the rear end regarding turnovers. The first 6 on the OL are capable and the depth is extremely young but talented.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ah aha ha. UGA 11 wins and Auburn 8??????? Now that is one of the funniest things I have ever heard. The only thing UGA has going for it is the easiest schedule in sec history. Your analysis: 1. good qb- yes but not great with no great wins in 2 years and in fact in every big game he has choked like no other. 2. lots of rbs- none of them are proven and without a half decent ol it wont matter. As for AU I would like a game by game breakdown to see how in the hell you get 8 max. As for the clemson game with Sammy Watkins out they most likely dont stand a chance to win although it should be a good game. Lets break down the two schedules. First off you will notice most of auburns hard games are at home. This is always the case in the even years and that is why the tigers are 61-17( with 2 perfect seasons) in the even years sine 2000.

AU:
clemson-w
at ms st-w
ulm-w
lsu-loss
ark-w
ole miss-w
vandy-w
a&m-w
nm st-w
uga-toss up
bama-loss

adds up to a 9-3 or 10-2 season.

UGA
buffalo-w
mizz-toss up
fl atl-w
vandy-w
ut-w
usc-l
ky-w
fl-l
ole miss-w
au-toss up
tech-win

Just like AU 9-3 or 10-2

I disagree about this being Richt’s last chance. 2013 will be a challenge because of the defense going to the NFL but talent remains.

I do agree that 2012 is a great opportunity though to get rid of a lot of complainers.

People still forget that Richt won our 1st SEC title in 20 years in 2002 which was his 2nd year in Athens. Same as the BCS title winning coaches did. Miami and OSU being undefeated kept us out. UGA remains the highest ranked team from 2002 that did not cheat to win.

The toughest game for Georgia may be Missouri. They return 15 starters and Georgia will be missing some guys. 2 DL guys on the Spring depth chart for Mizzou had 1 start apiece last year, but Madison returns at DE (out for the spring.) 3 LB spots return starters (Ebner back after 2011 injury). 2011 MLB starter Wilson moved to Sam. Bothe CBs return and safety has 2 guys with starts from 2011. 3 OL starters return (one, Fisher missed 2011). RB starter Josy *may* be back from injury; if not, 4-game starter Lawrence is back (Senior, over 500 yds and 5TDs.) Mr. Everything Moe returns at H-back. Had over 1,000 yards receiving with Gabbert in 2010, 649 yds on 54 catches from Franklin last year. Lucas, the X-guy had 23 catches, 649 yds, 4TD and the Z-guy had 20/364/3 TD. Franklin’s numbers at QB last year are 2,865 yards, 21 TD, 139.9% passer rating *plus* 981 yards rushing, 4.8 ypa with 15 TDs.

Also, those X and Z receivers are 6-5 215 and 6-4 195 respectively. The new kid, 5-star Green-Beckham is 6-6 220. I imagine they will teach him a few plays for the opener.

Food for thought-it wasn’t too long ago that playing Auburn from the west was much more dangerous than playing Arkansas. Heck there have been times in the not too distant pass that Alabama didn’t bring the fear and trembling it does now. The truth is the schedule is the schedule. Some years a team catches a break some years it doesn’t. Let me say it another way. Our natural opponent from the west is Auburn, Carolina’s is Arkansas. Don’t know the numbers exactly but I’m guessing that Auburn’s record since Arkansas joined the conference is better than Arkansas. The chickens need to quit whinning and just play the games.

The schedule is fine and I am disappointed that Mark would say it isn’t. The rivalries make the conference great. Throw them out and you will lose in the long run. The schedule is set too far in advance to ever have anything be “fair”.

Bradley’s embarrasing history of pandering to UGA notwithstanding, I don’t see how UGA cannot win the East based on the easy schedule alone. In addition they have one of the best defenses in the country and that’s critical. But winning the SEC is another matter. An inexperienced OL and a QB who gets panicky in big games is a serious liability against defenses like LSU or Bama. But who knows? Marlon Brown, Wooten, Bennett,JS Wesley, add Jay Rome and Lynch at TE. Having no WR like this would be a problem many programs would like to have.157 catches in 2011 , perhaps you were looking at the !AA Tech WR corp, that have how many catches?

GT will be significantly better on offense & defense in 2012.

GT will beat Miami. After suspensions and leaves,
Miami now has 31 Freshman & 30 Sophomores on its 85 man roster.
All that youth & inexperience. 2012 could be a very rough year da U.

UVA lost a huge number of seniors from 2011 team, especially at O-Line & D-Line.
UVA wont be as good as last year.
GT will beat UVA also.

GT will beat VT.
VT loses almost their entire starting defense squad from last year, but
do return several starters on offense.

GT will beat UGA. GT has very good chance of going 8-0 in ACC
and 12-0 overall in 2012.

NCST will pound Tennessee. NCST will be loaded.
NCST lost 5 key players to season-ending injuries before the season even started,
then lost 5 more starters by the 4th game of the year.
All 10 key starters will return. Key game vs FSU in Raleigh Oct 6th.
NCST will probably be the ACC-Atlantic champ.

Clemson loses most of its defense from 2011. Rebuilding year for Clemson.

Thanks for the optimism Mark. I, too, am predicting 14-0 and a MNC. Unless they lose a game and then I’m predicting 13-1. But if they lose another I’ll adjust that to 12-2. But then again, they could lose three games, in which case I’d say 10-3. But that’s as low as I go.

However, I may suspend those predictions until everybody reports to camp and have some practices under their belts and I see who will be playing and who is hurt.

We have 2 solid young QB’s but their success or failure will rely heavily on some unproven WR’s and RB’s. If anybody wanted some funny reading then here is Mark Bradley’s 2008 UGA prediction:

The Bulldogs will go 11-1 — the loss will be at Auburn, not at Arizona State or at LSU — and will win the SEC East. Then they’ll beat the Tigers in the Dome for the conference title. Then they’ll beat USC in Miami for the national championship. Then Michael Adams will say, “You know what? This BCS deal really isn’t so bad.”

He picked the same teams to make the championship, and it was in the same city. It’s pretty funny to read. Something tells me he won’t come anywhere close to being right once again.

Arkansas has the coaching issue. Alabama has the reload issue. LSU on the other hand has an unproven QB that can hardly be worse than the guy they trotted out last year. Maybe it will be a down year in the SEC. Maybe Hugh Freeze will shock the world.

Mike

May 31st, 2012
5:43 pm

Well, if UGA’s offense can eliminate the killer mistakes, they could go undefeated in the regular season. This is definitely the best shot they have had in years. If they dont eliminate the mistakes, they will lose a game or two.

Tech might win it, might not. We will see. The ACC certainly doesnt look that strong.

As for the “unbalanced” schedules, that is all relative. UGA went through that in 2008, 2009, and 2010 when they played Saban’s Sugar Bowl Tide squad, LSU twice, Ryan Mallet and Arkansas twice, and Auburn every year (including the National Champ squad). I dont recall Richt whining about it. Spurrier is just making excuses. I wonder if he will say the same in a year or two when he’s playing the Miss schools instead of LSU or Bama? Or if Arkansas falls off in the wake of Petrino’s mess?

5 years from now, the divisions could look totally different, so there is no predicting who will get the better schedule. South Carolina gets Arkansas every year while UGA plays Auburn. Most years, I would rather play Arkansas. UF plays LSU every year. UT plays Bama every year. They would say the same.

I have never argued that we have a good program because we don’t and never will. CPJ has overachieved to this point though and at least has us competitive. I don’t really see the point in firing him and getting a coach who will win 6-7 games a year instead of 8-9.

A small unsupportive fanbase…..cant sell tix..cant recruit one of the most talent rich states in the nation and you are located in the heart of the 7th largest media market in the U.S. That tells the story in a nutshell…below standard in stadium and facilities…all sorts of tix gimmicks to attract fans but folks are not interested in the product. 8 wins is nice in any other conf but not in the ACC….that is a conference that if somebody stepped up would dominate it for yrs. The thing about the SEC is, if your good enough, you will overcome the schedule. In 2010, Auburn played UGA and South Carolina from the East, and beat them. When UGA won the Division in 2003, they played LSU and Auburn from the West. Bama’s 2008 team under Saban played #1 UGA in Athens. Examples all over the place.

South Carolina has had easy West schedules too, but weren’t good enough to take advantage. Now they are, but they are in a tough part of the rotation. If they stay good, it will rotate back to an easy draw in a year or two. It’s the same way with everyone, so no school really has an advantage. Like i said, most would pick playing Arkansas every year instead of Auburn, LSU or Bama. He didnt get the short end of that stick.

Mark, Id say the UGA and Tech predictions are solid. Va Tech is beatable. Im not sure Tech will do it, but if they can, they will likely win the division. UGA will win the East, although I dont think they will lose to South Carolina. They wouldnt have last year except for killer mistakes. Also South Carolina lost their top notch DC, Ellis Johnson, plus some excellent players to the draft. I’m not sure what their defense will look like this year.

Florida getting better is a stretch though. I’m not sure where this improvement is supposed to come from. 3rd offensive coordinator in 3 years. Their playmakers all graduated (Demps, Rainey, and Brantley) without which they dont go bowling last year. They are pretty much starting from scratch.

This is probably the most detailed prediction that I have read thus far. I hope the Dawgs can manage to keep their heads. They have to get past Mizzou without a backfield. They have to get past UT and UF, which are dark horse teams and which means UGA will have to beat UF two years in a row for the first time since the 80s. (If I got that wrong, you still get the idea). Point is: everyone thinks this is a cakewalk schedule. It may not be the hardest, but it is full of potential pitfalls and spoilers. To say the least, the Dawgs have ample opportunity to beat themselves.

/As for Kiffin, he definitely owned Martinez, rolling out the QB all day. God that was painful. Couldn’t get the D off the field. Kiffen’s daddy did own Bobo, too, but he couldn’t have done it without the O using Willie like a X_________ (fill in expletive here).

Both Tech and UGA should be better than last year. Especially Tech. So MB pegs the Jackets at 9-3 (after 8-5 last year) and the Dawgs at 11-1 (only place to go after 10-2, unless you think… nah). Makes sense so far.

UGA can run the table in the regular season. Why should SC beat them after losing more talent?

Tech probably won’t lose all four games to Va Tech, Miami, Clemson and UGA. Mark thinks the Jackets beat Va Tech in the opener and that is probably the best call. An argument can be made that this is the year GT will get back to beating the U. CPJ has suffered some embarrassing losses the last three years – Canes may get run outta BDS this year.

VT has 3 starters back on offense. Logan Thomas at QB is a big plus. The other 2 returnees are the FB and C. The OTs were 2nd stringers last season, and they are big, both 6-6, one 304 and the other 328. Wang at OG was also a 2nd team guy. The other OG is Brent Benedict the RS soph who left Georgia last summer over S&C issues. He’s had a lot of time to rehab after his high school injury. They are really going to miss David Wilson’s 1,700 yards rushing at RB, 1st round pick by the NY Giants. His replacement is a RS freshman. They also lost Danny Coale’s 900 yards receiving, 5th round by the Cowboys. Also Boykin’s 61 catches for 761 yds and 5 TDs. The 2 replacement WRs were 30/510 yds/3TDs and 3/45/0; big drop off. They do have a long time to prepare for Al Groh’s defense (7 starters back). The 9 starters returning of D will help immensely, but VT was an up-and-down bunch on offense last year. They topped out at Georgia Tech and at Virginia with 38 in each game, and then they did next to nothing against Clemson and Michigan with 1 TD in each game. The Jackets are fortunate that the game got moved up.

The UGA schedule thing is really getting old. The rotation is responsible not the AD. The Dawgs will play those three in a few years. By then Arkansas will have dropped off again and LSU will have cycled down and Saban will have left Bama. So guess what? Everybody will say that UGA’s schedule is soft… think before you spout a bunch of crap and make a fool of yourselves. The schedule wasn’t favorable a few years back. You can state the out of conference games all you want… everybody plays patsies. Just take the schedule for what it is now… it’ll be different even next year. Playing the NC sounds like a stretch. If GT defeats VT in the opener, then the sky is the limit from that point, because that is the best opponent they will face all season (including UGA).But I firmly believe that GT is still a season away from taking the next big step for the program. Lots of talent on board now, but it’s all VERY young and most of the real impact players who’ve signed on won’t see the field much, if at all, until the 2013 season. GT should have a VERY good defense to compliment their already potent offense at that point, plus they’ll have a couple of QB’s who can throw at least as good as they can run and a bunch of 300+ pounders to block for them. I think most casual observers are going to be shocked by the team CPJ fields in 2013-2016!!! But this year will be largely a repeat of last season.

UGA SHOULD win every regular season game — but they won’t. I don’t see them losing to SC again, but I DO see them dropping a game or two unexpectedly (UF and AU are the most likely candidates, with GT as a very real possibility because I seriously doubt Washington is still the starting QB by that late in the season). IF UGA manages to win the SEC Least again, which they should condidering it is a total creampuff of a division (No better than ANY other division in ANY other conference. The SEC Least has been riding the SEC Wests coattails for quite a while now)
UGA should lose 1 or possibly 2 regular season games, but will get slaughtered again in the SEC championship game — IF they make it that far — and will then go to another B-Grade bowl and lose again if Murray (Das Chokemeister) is still at QB and that idiot Bobo is still OC. UGA has some awesome talent on the roster, but they lack the coaching and the discipline required to win a NC.

Of course, if we’re all going to be delusional, then I want to see UGA and GT BOTH undefeated when they play in November (and ranked #1 and #2), then I want them both to win their conference championships. GT wins regular season game and conference title — goes to NC to face ……..UGA again, who would be SEC champions. Now THAT rematch would make for a wonderful season for BOTH programs!!!!

And you are right: If CMR can’t win a NC this season with the roster he has and the pathetically easy schedule they play, then he never will. But it isn’t going to happen, and I don’t think it ever will as long as CMR is head coach (unless he grows a pair and gets rid of several of his assistants/coordinators). Sad too, because UGA has such a genuinely talented roster with LOTS of probable future NFL’ers — but coaches who can’t seem to put it together in the big games. Sad but true.

Am I the only one that notices that the ONLY fans in college football who brag about what conference they are in is SEC Least fans??? Any normal folks brag about and pull for THEIR teams. But SEC Least teams are so below-par, that they have to brag about their affiliation with the other half of the conference, who actually has a few good teams. Actually 2. Take away Bama and LSU and the SEC suddenly becomes one of the weakest conferences in Div-I. BUT, you’ll never hear Bama fans or LSU fans bragging about how good the SEC is — they brag about how good their TEAM is. Only total losers try to elevate themselves through affiliation with REAL winners, rather than actually going out there and winning something themselves.

With every post by Kerryb, the collective IQ of this blog diminishes. And we generally reference you living with your mother because most dwags don’t even know who their Daddy is!!!!
Actually, we are being nice. We are assuming that you are a child, based upon the maturity of your posts. It is logical to assume that since you are presumably a child, that you live at home with your parent(s). The alternative would be that, if you actually ARE an adult, then you are suffering from a serious rectal-cranial inversion and you are extremely immature and totally lacking in cognitive logic skills. So it’s nicer to just assume you are a child playing on Mommy’s computer, than to acuse you of being an adult who is ignorant and immature enough to come on here and post such mindless drivel. So, which are you? An insolent child? Or a mindless, incredibly immature “adult”? Either way, your knowledge of the realities of Collegiate athletics is severely lacking. Now move along little dwaggie.

Georgia is thin on the O line which will be an issue if some guys don’t step up. That said, I think they win the East but I just think Bama or LSU is better.

I give a slight edge for LSU over Bama for 3 reasons: Mettenberger ( I know he’s unproven but he is already a step up from Jefferson & Lee), Bama lost more on defense than LSU and LSU has Bama at home in prime time on CBS. Before you Tide fans get in a tizzy, I said a SLIGHT edge. Bama very well may be running on all cylinders when they come to Death Valley and beat the Tigers.

The reason UGA struggled in 2009 and 2010 was because of a lack of an effective run game. With the stable of running backs we have now that won’t be a problem. Now Bobo can use the full offense and open it up. My guess is that UGA will be running the ball about 60 percent of the time to start the season. It is easier for a young O-line to run block than pass block. At least until they get more experience.

Spurrier is loaded this year with Lattimore back and a much improved Offensive line. Clowney and Taylor are beast on the defense and the defense will dominate again. I predict Gamecocks and Bama in the SEC title game.

Idiots. Georgia is the preseason champ every year. This is the SEC we win national titles not preseason titles. At least they’re trying to help UGA with these consistently soft schedules, its just unfortunate that Georgia players don’t step up till they’re in the league.

Tim Tucker playing with the truth. If the SEC wants to UGa v AU game it can be done even with a 9 game schedule.

“The presidents of the SEC schools plan to adopt a firm position Friday on how the league wants a college-football playoff to be structured, as well as determine whether the 120-year-old Georgia-Auburn football game will continue on an annual basis.”

I think I addressed that earlier. The only sub par years during the Richt era was 2009 and 2010. Georgia had no establish running game both those years. In 2009 UGA was starting a career backup at Qb and in 2010 was starting a redshirt Freshman. Also in 2009 we got rid of a DC that was not doing the job and in 2010 was learning a new scheme on defense. That is not the problem this year. We have a stable of running backs and receivers and an experienced QB on offense. They are returning 9 starters on defense with at least 5 players who could be All-Americans. They also have NFL talent at about every position on defense. I guarantee you this will not be a sub par year this year.

You’re a mo-ron. When was the last time UGA won a big game? They can’t do it. Murray is great until the competition gets stiff. They will fold up like a cheap tent by the end of the year. Richt must have some evidence of Mike Slive doing something bad. How else can you avoid Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas two straight years? UGA doesn’t have the mental edge to run the table (evidence- an arrest every weekend this spring). Will they have enough players to field a team for the Missouri game? Here’s a bold prediction. Alabama beats LSU in Baton Rouge. They finish the year 1-2 again and meet in Miami for the title. Nick then wins the rematch as well. What isn’t to like about the tide this year? Great QB, horses at RB, whole OL back…Deion belue at corner will be a star. The DL is loaded (8 guys that all can play). The linebackers will be great as always. UGA will lose at Missouri and at South Carolina. Then the heat will be back on Mark.

Metzenberger ready to beat BAMA, MARKIE MARK?

Look In The Mirror

June 1st, 2012
2:02 am

We who really follow college football all know that Mark Bradley is a good guy who is trying to please the fans of the state Universities. However, if one really looked at the games in the upcoming 2012 season would note that The OL of the UGA Bulldogs is probably in the bottom 4 of the league, while the qb who is really good will have a very hard time staying healthy getting hit 20 to 25 times a game. The Defense is good up front but we all saw that TG can game plan very well, but he does not do a very good job of adjusting during the late stages of the game. UGA will have better depth and better running backs, but the OL issues will be force the running backs to go back to 2011 form and only hope to have a gap here or there to make a run.

Final note, Tennessee is going to be a great deal better this year, Vandy will be a great deal better, Florida is going to be pretty good and their athletes are better than UGA across the board. WM will do what ever he can to force a big running game inside the tackles this year, use his tight ends and allow his second year qbs to make plays. USC is going to be pretty good and playing in Columbia SC is going to be a tough game to win. Add it to the trip to Columbia Mo, we can see UGA losing 3 games without much fanfare and stretching.

GT still has no defense and without a defense we will see teams score on Tech with rather ease.

We’ve got the ole deer in headlights with good football teams. He and Bobo also “nut up” and shut down what’s working for some reason. Take the SECCG vs LSU last year. We were moving the ball on LSU in the first half with some success…..And they come out in the second half with a walk on RB and the 10 th worst rated OL in the conference and think they are going to run the ball on the best defense in the country. WTF? I guess we thought we were going to sneak up on them ….LOL

I honestly believe UGA loses to Missouri at the beginning of the season. How good was UGA’s defense last season when they played good teams. UGA played 4 teams in 2011 that were CONSISTENTLY good. (Boise, SC, LSU, MSU), and went 0-4.
The Dawgs played 2 teams that were INCONSISTENTLY good (AU & GT), and went 2-0
The rest of UGA’s schedule was down right atrocious. UT & UF had, I think, their worst seasons in 50+ years! UGA went 8-0 in these games.

10 Ws, and a D that looked great in the 8-0 games, good in the 2-0 games, and which gave up 33+ in 0-4 games.

It’ll be a whole lotta the same in 2012, but a little better for UGA since there’s no Boise. UGA’s schedule is, without me doing the research, probably the weakest the Dawgs have had in the modern era.

I’ll be SHOCKED, and that’s all caps, if the Dawgs don’t come out with double-digit Ws in 2012.

Geez…with respects, friend, do you even FOLLOW college football & the SEC? UGA? Seriously? They are the perennial fat sister…they’re likeable but never the leading lady. UGA will not survive the SECE, much less endure against the West champion. If UGA had every 5* weapon at their disposal, they’ve still got mediocrity in abundance in Richt/Bobo and many of their team would be under some form of suspension, due to Richt’s lack of discipline. I’m not hatin…it just is what it is! There’s only one game of ultimate signifigance and that’s BAMA/LSwho. Whichever one wins that will take the NC. And BTW, the SECCG will be a warm-up for whichever team wins BAMA/LSwho. If you’re bettin against Saban & BAMA…you’ve got more bravado than brains. Best coach, best coaching staff and best collection of players over the past 5 years….so…what does common sense tell you? It’s not what we lose annually to the NFL that’s the key…it’s what we have waiting in the wings…but you won’t/can’t believe…so just wait & watch…

I dunno. In the East, Florida will bounce back in the second year of Muschamp’s cleanup efforts. And I still don’t see us having the depth in the trenches to go 4 quarters with Bama or LSU.

I don’t think it’s our year just yet. If we beat our rivals and win the East it will be a successful year.

It’s only Year 3 of Jimbo and now FSU has quality depth and a 5th year Senior QB not seen since 2000. It’s taken 2 high quality recruiting classes to finally get the quality and depth that were depleted by Bowden and to prevent the impact of massive inhuries we had last season on the OL, RB and to EJ. It is NOT the same story as the late Bowden years and the truly knowledgable football people understand this. In fact night and day difference.

The defense should be the best in the country, especially on the DL, according to all the analysts. FSU is 19-7 over the past 2 seasons with 3 straight wins over the SEC and returns 17 starters. watch out for K Benjamin at WR.

The only scary game is VT on the road for a Thursday night. I hope and pray GT wins thieir divison (which they won’t) to see what the defense can do with that offense.

If FSU can avoid the devestating injuries of last season, watch out.

If the dawgs win the east, I will root for them over LSU or Bama. Can’t stand either coach. I think they are both scum. They will do anything and push the rules to the limit to win a NC. I think UGA will loose to Mizzou, USC, and either UF, AUB, or GT. Have to say GT because I have hope. GT should win every game other than VT, Clem, and UGA. If they can get 2 out of three, its going to be a good year.

Mark – This may all unravel in Columbia … Missouri, not South Carolina. With all the DB’s back in Athens eating cookies, that Missouri game could be a disaster for the Dawgs, who have not shown much spunk in games west of the Mississippi River lately (Colorado and OK State). I’m pretty sure we were actually better than those teams we lost to out there, but we truly looked totally out of sync. Grantham may make for a different outcome – at least I hope so – but without all his DBs against a potent passing attack it will not be easy.

I reluctantly fine myself agreeing with jwo3, except for the lack of discipline comment. Our problem is that our own rules for discipline are killing us. We all know college football players are smoking pot regularly – yes, even those in hallowed places like Tuscaloosa. The difference: we suspend ‘em while the other teams play ‘em.

Arkansas will be okay, John L. Smith notwithstanding. He’s a temporary babysitter and can’t possibly mess up too much, given the relatively good coaching staff who’ll actually be handling most of the day-to-day business.

And South Carolina will probably win 8 or 9 games this year, but definitely not 10.
For one, they’ll receive their yearly beating from the Hogs, just like they always do (regardless of how ‘good’ they’re supposed to be this year–and it doesn’t matter whether we play them in Columbia or Fayetteville. We pretty much own the Ol’ Ball Coach–and he can’t stand it, either :-)

I’d also like to know the last time that Bama was “not as good as advertised”.
I’ll wait for your insightful answer……….I’m pretty sure it was way back during the Mike Shula era sometime……………………..

Lane Kiffen don’t really own Mark Richt. I would say that Lane Kiffen owned Willie Martinez, and that lone game against Kiffen and UT in ‘09 was one of the reasons for Willie getting canned. I bet if they played that game again with Grantham calling the shots on D, it would be a totally different story.

Mark: I love how the biggest asset to UGa for the last two seasons has been….easy schedule. You make the assumption that Georgia has moved into the SEC elite with your usual lack of in depth anlysis of the rest of the conference. But good job getting your traditional string of poorly researched Georgia puff pieces out there. Ultimately even if I agree that Georgia has top talent (i am not so sure anymore), great talent doesn’t make up for mediocre team leadership…Georgia will be below Auburn, alabama, Arkansas…and SC.

Mark… So you think it is fair to claim UGA as the team to beat, and that if Coach Mark Richt can’t win this year, maybe he can’t? Is that what you truly believe? If that is the case, I have to question you as a journalist in the sports world and tell me where the Bulldogs show on paper, an O-Line that equates to that of one of an SEC championship, possibly MNC team?

Oh, you mean an OL with three new starters is supposed to be a superb aspect of a championship caliber team? Care to cite a team that has won the SEC with three new starters, starters that are going to be: Freshman, Redshirt Freshmen or Sophomores?

Is it possible? Oh, yeah, it could happen. Should it? Not with such a glaring gap at such an important position as the OL group. I mean, poor OL play equals no running lanes, no time for passing and pretty much results in something similar to what UGA did last year, and they had much more, MUCH MORE experience.

I can only hope Coach Friend and Co. get the most out of these young guns vying for playing time on the OL and that they survive the Missouri game and gel as a unit as the season progresses and makes you look like a genius. There is more depth this year, and better depth at RB which might very well work out for the Dawgs, but I am a realist and am not going in with it is an “all or nothing” season, and that a MNC/SEC Championship is the only acceptable end result, or Coach Richt will never win one.

Yeah, a little defensive, I’ll admit, but just get tired of willy-nilly prognostication when such a glaring gap on OL does not seem to scream MNC team, or SEC C team. Can it happen? Yes, but “Should it?”, is my question to you.

It is a nice thing to do by Mark Bradley in picking UGA and GT to win big this fall.

However the one area that Mr. Bradley did not delve into was ;ATTITUDE. That is what makes the difference in winning the big games and losing easy games or making them too close.

We all know that UGA has great or good players, but the attitude and dedication along with the “ME” attitudes by many on the UGA roster reflect the reason why UGA has not won a title in 32 years and why Mark Richt is proven to be a great recruiter but a poor Head Coach who knows how to manage his staff, hire his staff and keep control of his players and program.

UGA vs. GT lets face it UGA has a good program and a pretty stout team. Lots of depth and top knotch recruits. GT is limited as far as depth goes and trails off the end of every season. Our chances sadly are SLIM.

Its about time UGA’s number is called for the SEC team who gets a shot a the title. Just don’t blow the streak let alone lose to a California team. They are always delusional. Even if they somehow manage to win the East (which is highly unlikely), they are not even close to the level of LSU and Bama. Last season, they were not even on the level with S. Carolina, and they are not up there yet. Not even sure they are up to the level of Mizzou, meaning I am not sure they can go to Columbia, without all those suspended D players, and win. 9-3 will be a really good record Mizzou, S. Carolina, Florida, Vandy, Auburn). 5 possible losses, but realistically probably 3 or 4.

GT does have a better chance to win the Coastal and the ACC than UGA has of winning the East and SEC Championship. They beat Va. Tech on Sept3, and they have the edge, and that is very do-able. Meanwhile, I am not sure that UGA can beat EITHER team from Columbia. Their game on Sept 8 is a trap game if there has ever been one. Defending SEC East champ going on the road to play a very good Missouri team that will be sky high and needs desperately to prove they belong in the SEC. TG’s depleted D will be tested early and often, and if Mizzou can pressure AM, he will help them out with a pic or fumble, or just some awful passes, which is his history. He does not handle pressure well, and like the D, his impressive stats were improved by playing the creampuff schedule(Coastal Carolina, New Mexico St, Kentucky). Yes, I can see Tech in Charlotte, but UGA in Atlanta…. well, I would not be making any hotel reservations.

The Truth is in the Coaching

June 1st, 2012
6:26 pm

Here lies the problem, people like Bham Dawg/ GT Bob are so focused on what is happening at Alabama and what Nick Saban are doing they cannot stay clear minded on how poor of a job their coaches are doing.

You see the issue is not the recruits, the facilites, or even academic requirements, it is the complete lack of coaching, game planning and understanding that even during the course of a game that adjustments are made and good coaches TEACH their players to adjust their game plans and their play. At the good schools you do not see them making dumb penalites( Unsportsmanlike Conduct, Personal Fouls, Jumping offside, late hits) or trash talking while down by a couple of touchdowns after making a decent play. At UGA that is the norm and their off the field antics and behavior demonstrate their mental state of mind which is fully a direct focus of coaching and TEACHING.

UGA cannot beat good teams, Is that in their heads? Or is it just their coaches? It really does not matter, in the end the poor behavior and selfish attitudes of too many UGA players also cost them games that really matter. UGA coaches are the failures and good coaches know how to beat poorly managed teams like UGA and CMR allow to go onto the field.

Sadly, UGA is likely to have depth issues again on the OL; and that’s where a team makes it’s bones. You can’t dominate an opponent if you can’t block and control the ball. With UGA’s joke of an easy schedule anything short of an east title would be bad news for Richt. Seriously with the talent he has on hand and the favorable schedule it would take either a glut of injuries, arrests, or some seriously poor coaching for them to achieve less.

Irregardless they’ll once again get spanked by either LSU or Alabama with the west winner bringing home a 7th straight national title.

Why not the Dawgs? I think both west coaches are better on gamedays and both west rosters are top to bottom more talented.

I wouldn’t expect any less homerism from mr. Bradley however.

Well, opinions are like…you know…

So here’s mine:

Bradley’s got to sell papers. That’s why he writes. So if he writes “Tech will probably lose to Virginia Tech, but they may not, and if they do, they will win the division,” or “Georgia may well win the SEC East because it has the easiest schedule on that side of the fence,” he’s not gonna have as many of us posting on here. But if he says, “Tech will win the Coastal and Georgia will win the SEC,” that gets peoples’ attention. And hence we are all expressing our relatively contentious viewpoints.

To win a championship of any sort, lots of variables come into play. Talent is one. Coaching and scheduling are two others. Injuries, matchups and just plain old luck are part of the equation, too. The moving parts are all inherently unpredictable–which is why all of this fascinates us so.

Tech’s glaring weaknesses last year were simple talent deficits on defense (they just were not very good there) and the lack of a reliable vertical passing game on offense after the first few games of the season. Georgia had weaknesses in special teams (the most glaring weakness of all; without special teams breakdowns, the Dawgs would have beaten both South Carolina and MSU and would have posted a 12-2 record in 2011) and in turnovers–particularly from Aaron Murray in big games, when he was pressing too hard to make something happen. The lack of depth at running back also contributed; the team essentially became one-dimensional late in the season after the Auburn game, when Crowell and Samuel were injured and everyone else was simply ineffective. Murray is at his best when he has a good running game. He doesn’t feel he has to do it all himself then.

Tech’s schedule is actually quite favorable–it avoids FSU, gets Miami at home, and the non-conference slate is manageable (PC, MTSU, BYU are all very beatable). The added advantage of playing in the dishwater ACC and getting Va Tech early are also critical.

Tech’s problems from last season will persist to some degree–the talent deficit on defense still exists, and the development of a reliable vertical passing game will be largely dependent upon who can replace Stephen Hill as a deep threat and whether there will be consistent delivery of the football in the play action. That being said, here’s how I see 2012 for Tech:

Sure wins: PC, MTSU, BC, Duke
Probable wins: Maryland, UNC, BYU
Tossups: UVA, Miami
Probable losses: Clemson, Va Tech
Sure losses: U.Ga.

I really don’t see Tech winning in Athens–the defense should be at full strength by then, and that alone should guarantee a Georgia win. Tech would have to outscore the Dawgs to win this game, as their defense will not be able to stop the Georgia offense (they could not last season, and this offense will have more talent at every position except the offensive line–and that unit will be considerably less green by the 12th game of the season). It is hard to outscore someone when you cannot score.

That being said, if you start with the assumption that Tech wins all of the “sure wins” and “probable wins,” that’s seven victories right there. Throw in a split of the tossups and that’s eight wins. That will have the Jackets at 8-2.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Clemson returns a lot of offensive firepower, and that game is in Death Valley–but their defense will still have difficulties this season. Throw in the fact that they lost 4/5 starters on the offensive line and it’s not a stretch to see Tech winning this game again this season. The Tech-Clemson game last year was the second-best-coached game of CPJ’s Georgia Tech career (the best being his lone win over Georgia three years ago). And Virginia Tech is indeed a notoriously slow-starting team, wven losing to ECU and James Madison early on in recent years. They have more talent than the Jackets, particularly on defense, and the game is in Blacksburg, but if the Yellow Jackets can pull a rabbit out of the hat in the season opener, it could be a special season on the Flats. I’d still favor the Hokies in this contest, but not by much–and CPJ will have all summer to get ready for them. So, in summary, I think the most likely record for Tech is 8-4, but 9-3 is very doable–and if they win the two big road games (a stretch, but possible), an 11-1 record and an ACC title would not be out of the question.

Georgia has, admittedly, the easiest nonconference schedule in recent memory. If you throw in the easiest SEC schedule in the conference and a boatload of returning starters on an elite defense, as well as the return of all of the playmakers on offense (and the addition of top-drawer depth at running back) and you can see why most folks are predicting a banner year in Athens.

The keys are going to be to address the special teams issues (and they were legion last season) and to develop an offensive line. Both are recognized as priorities by CMR. The OL development is more about chemistry and quality depth, as there is certainly no lack of talent there. The defense should be quite special–the Dawgs actually return more total tackles than any other team in college football, and the depth there has been shored up in the off-season.

Game by game:

Sure wins (5): Buffalo, FAU, UK. Ole Miss, Georgia Southern
Probable wins (5): Missouri, Vandy, UT, Auburn, Ga Tech
Tossups(2): Florida, South Carolina

As I’ve said earlier, I think the matchups in the Georgia-Georgia Tech game favor the Dawgs in a big way–but the rivalry aspect gives the Jackets a hair’s-breadth of a chance. Auburn matches up very poorly with Georgia (see 45-7 last season), and while the addition of Brian van Gorder will eventually their terrible defense, it won’t be enough this season–particularly with the mediocre QB play that will continue to be an issue on the Plains. Vandy will have the Bulldogs’ undivided attention after last season’s near-disaster in Nashville–and the post-game theatrics between James Franklin and Todd Grantham after last year’s win will add a little spice to that mix this year. Tennessee will be mediocre again this season–half-decent but one-dimensional on offense if Bray stays healthy, decent but not spectacular on defense–plus, there are a plethora of off-the-field issues with the Vols, and the game is in Athens. I see the Dawgs winning this game in what could well be Derek Dooley’s last game in his home town as the UT head coach. And the Missouri game, despite all of the hype as the Tigers’ first SEC tilt, looks like a Georgia win going away. Their QB (the other James Franklin in the league) had off-season surgery on his throwing shoulder, their starting tailback will likely miss the season with a knee injury, and their defense–which wasn’t very good last year, particularly in the secondary–lost its three best defensive linemen. If Georgia loses this game it will be because they self-destruct, not because Missouri beats them. Given that the Dawgs will have all summer to prepare (the only prior game will be the glorified scrimmage against Buffalo), I simply don’t see that happening.

And so we reach the Big Two.

The Florida Gators were simply awful offensively last season. Thankfully for them, the Charlie Weis experiment is over. There are loads of talent in Gainesville–but not at QB or at running back, which will still handcuff the offense this season. Defensively, they will be solid, but not at the level of LSU, Bama, South Carolina…or Georgia. I don’t see the Gators putting up many points against this Georgia defense, so on paper, this should be a Georgia win. I rate it as a tossup only because of the Florida monkey on Georgia’s back. The Gators will be 8-4 or 9-3 next season–but I don’t think one of those wins will be against the Dawgs.

South Carolina will probably be favored against Georgia in Columbia. Talent-wise, last year’s Gamecock team was better (particularly on defense), and the losses of WR Alshon Jeffery and DC Ellis Johnson cannot be underestimated.Still, the Gamecocks will probably be undefeated when they face a Georgia team that will be determined to avenge the loss in Athens last season–a game that the Dawgs simply gave away. In addition, barring injury, the Dawgs should be back at full strength for this game–and Spurrier will not have all summer to prepare for them like he has in past seasons. In my estimation, the Dawgs should win this game–but it will be a war. Interestingly, even if Georgia loses, the Gamecocks have to play at Florida, at LSU and at home against Arkansas. The odds of them winning all three of those games are slim–which is why Bradley has Georgia pegged to play in the SECCG even if though he has their lone loss to South Carolina. I would place the likelihood of Georgia playing in the SECCG as the East rep at someplace around 70%, with the Gamecocks having a 20% likelihood, Florida at 5% (they also play LSU) and all others collectively at 5%.

In the SECCG, I think the Dawgs will play an unbeaten LSU team–again. And I think they will be ready this time. The butterflies will be gone, and the Bayou Bengals lost several key players on defense from last season. The Dawgs shut the Tigers down for a half last season, but couldn’t get over the hump. I suspect that will not be the case this year by game 13.

That’s my take. Completely unbiased, as always.

Normally I laugh at your homer choice of Georgia all the time. However this year I am inclined to agree with you not that my opinion matters. A couple points however, I think the Dawgs will stumble at least once but not to Carolina, it will be to someone they should not loose to. As for my Gators 9-3 giving them way to much love, defense will be good that being said the QB position still up in the air neither one makes you stop and go WOW. Another season, same hype. How many years do we have to endure the “this is the year” about the Dawgs chances. To say that the Dawgs win the SEC says that the Dawgs play in the national championship game which has not happened in uh 32 years! Remember all the Top 5 recruiting classes that have flopped. Richt is still in Athens but in their court is Gators and Vols don’t have great coaches either. However, the Gamecocks do have a great coach. Dawgs lose in Missouri to set the stage for their season which will once again disappoint. Outback Bowl awaits!

I think both predictions are realistic and pretty likely.

Tech will be much improved and winning the ACC shouldn’t be too tough provided we get past VPISU.

Georgie’s team will also be improved and should be more than good enough to get through its relatively weak SEC schedule unscathed. Beating LSU/Alabama in the Dome will be difficult for sure, but I think they can do it.

Arby

Georgia will have a tough time going 11-1. I think more like 8-4. They will have problems with Missouri, SC, Florida and Auburn. Auburn will have a better Defensive Coordinator. Remember Vangorder and his buddy Martinez ? Florida will be better. Not having commings at Corner will hurt Georgia against Missouri, not mention inexperienced O-line. SC will probably straightup whip Georgia. I want to believe Georgia comes out and bets missouri, it would be a world ot comfidence.

captguitarman

I think you just said that Georgia will win the SEC East because it has an easier SEC schedule than South Carolina. And then having won because they did not play the best teams in the SEC, plus they play several other Little Sisters of the Poor teams, they will then go on to play for the SEC championship and beat the western champ, LSU. And then the implication is that since they are SEC champ, the inevitable will occur and they will play for the national championship, and win? Some how that does not all add up, but you were candid enough to concede that possibility, and as noted, you were accurate about the SEC east last year. It is possible to play a couple of strong teams and then get to a championship bowl game (that was how it was in the Big Ten for many years. But, these days, it is not as likely, and as every one knows, any game against an SEC opponent in its home stadium can be a trial by fire. Let’s just hope that if your predictions come to pass, that the Puppies don’t some how get into the national championship game . . . and lose to a non-SEC opponent. Can you say, “stigma?”

I honestly believe UGA loses to Missouri at the beginning of the season. How good was UGA’s defense last season when they played good teams. It was average and not nearly as dominating as people are making them out to be. They can win the east but there is a big disparity between UGA and Bama/LSU.Alot of this is their mental makeup.
——————————————————————
Obviously you dont have a clue..Even Tech’s offense might score 50 on Missouri’s defense which lost 3 starters from it’s line.Georgia is returning 10 starters from a top 5 defense.

Georgia? I’ve heard about the GA appearance, but against Oklahoma. If USC goes undefeated or has 1 loss and beats Oregon formthe Pac-12 Championship, they’ll be in Miami. USC vs Georgia, USC with the win, 52-19. If it’s USC vs Alabama, USC with the win, 52-9. If it’s USC vs LSU, it’s USC with the win, 52-6.

UGA will lose to Sc for 3rd year in row. Sc is kust a stronger program than UGA right now. Another 150-175 yds for Lattimore (will give him over 500 yds in 3 games- a real Dawg tamer). Cnnor shaw will be a good qb (see ball security stats in 2010, then look at UGA’s Murray on ball security). Sc is best in East, Sourrier is the biggest bulldasg whipper of all times. Man, I am glad Sc has him as coach. Who will SC get for next coach, Knute Rockne? Holtz, Spurrier, both Hall of Fame coaches, keep upgrading. Will Richt finally be let go after 3rd loss in row to SC. Nah, UGA’s staff/administration is just too inbred to get rid of one of their own.

It’s really sad that UGA alumni and fans have only their football team to take pride in. It’s even sadder that this pride depends on the performance of illiterate dummies who don’t even come close to meeting minimum academic requirements. 94% of UGA football players are what UGA calls “special admits,” which is just a euphemism for admitting bozos who can’t even read.

This sorry practice not only cheapens all UGA degrees (which are pretty worthless to begin with), but embarrasses the State of Georgia and its citizens. And Mark Richt is the one behind the atrocities at UGA.

So enjoy your victories, and be kind to your former players when you see them working menial jobs in custodial or sanitation services. Or pushing a shopping cart around, looking for a warm place to sleep at night. That’s your UGA reality.

If the Dawgs manage to get to the SCCCG, and that’s a big “if”, I don’t see how the beat essentially the same team, plus a QB with an arm, that destroyed them in December with no first downs in the first half. Our OL loses only Hebert, but gets Dworaczyk, our best O-lineman, back. All our RBs are back, plus Jeremy Hill, who might be the best of the bunch. But you just go on hoping, Dawg fans.

My loyal Gator prediction…..

Florida’s defense will be every bit as good as Georgia’s…maybe better…and this will be the coming of age year for Driskell….and/or…..Brissett. Gillislee will have a very good year at RB, and will be supported well by Brown, Johnson, and Jones. Incoming freshmen WR phenom, Pittman, will make all the youny WRs corp a lot better, and Florida will be very strong at TE. The experienced OL will be a lot bigger, a lot better, and a lot deeper. Florida will make the fans of both Georgia and South Carolina moan on at least two Saturdays this fall……and Georgia fans will once again DEMAND a coaching change…..which will not happen…..again.

Finally…..LSU will play USC for the National Title……and win.

No, you are off base. No one is saying UGA’s defense will not be pretty good. What everyone is saying is that in 2011 UGA could not run the ball against good teams consistently and had to rely on Murray to make throws with 2 linemen who were high draft picks. This year the OL is going to be like swiss cheese and the running game will not exist( bring in all the 4 and 5 star running backs you want) and in those big games without a running game you will get beat like you did in 17 of the last 19 games against ranked teams.

That is what everyone with football knowledge is aware of.

@I dropped my friend twinkie: Paul Johnson is possibly the most overrated coach in history. Look at his declining record as his players replace Gailey’s. He can’t recruit. Look at his record in games in which the other team has an off week to prepare. His offense is a gimmick, joke. He has this Chuck Norris like following on campus but its ridiculously underserved. The team has no depth and that is why GT has no special teams or defense or any chance to beat teams like VT and clemson on a regular basis. I’m a fan but its hard to cheer on CPJ.

Our big question is OL but I think this is lamented too much. While young most of them have been in the system for two years. They have to practice against what may be the best defense in the country day in and day out. I doubt that any team they face regular season will have a defense even close to what they see in practice. I think Theus is capable of contributing as a freshman ( remember Sturdivant and Ben Jones). By the time we get to SC barring injuries this team will be experienced.
The thing I see causing the most concern is kicking game with two freshman. They both have great ability but the pressure of kicking in college is a world apart from high school.
The Missouri game is way over blown as a potential trap. Their defense is not very good and if the QB remains hurt it wil be a long day for them. Even with him we beat them handily. Auburn game is my biggest fear. We embarrassed them and they won’t forget that.
I see a good chance to run the table.

A UGA FOOTBALL FANS COOKBOOK

BAKED IMPLOSION

Ingredients:
Recruiting (2 5-Stars, 12 4-Stars, and a pinch of 3-Stars)
Steroids (Finely shaved testosterone and a sprinkling of HGH)
Cushy Academics (The Fundamentals of Basketball and Correcrions Officer Training Courses)
Fan Base Ignorante (freshly picked fans with no college education typically found in SEC stadiums)
Fan Base Dilusionante (fans with a worthless college degree typically saturated with Bourbon)
Large Metro Newspaper Hype
One Lean Mediocre Offensive Coordinator
One Head Coach (Mild)
A Large Stadium
Depression Figs
A Flat Screen TV (preferably HD to get full flavor)

Instructions:
1) In Early Spring, begin touting your recruits to the Fan Base Ignorante (if they have Internet)
2) In June, begin touting your recruits to Fan Base Dilusionante
3) Season the program with an abundant amount of hype (don’t be bashful)
4) Allow the large metro newspaper hype to marinate through the entire summer.
5) Before baking, sprinkle some coach talk from the mild head coach on the other ingredients.
6) Set aside some of the ingredients as they cannot be used (due to incarceration, DUI, etc.)
7) Place all the ingredients in the large stadium and bake slowly for first two months at 90 degrees
8) When ingredients burn due to something we like to call The Spurrier effect, add Depression Fig
9) Reduce temperature to the low 70s for the next month.
10) Watch out for the Vandy-wine. If it boils, add more Depression Fig.
11) Reduce temperature to 40s for the last month.
12) Allow dish to cool on its way to Shreveport.
13) Terminate head coach

Richt has proven nothing, while Les and Nick have over and over again.”

I believe the telling tale with the Georgia program is how many under Richt have gone on to become head coaches. I believe noone has. Truthfully the only coach they have that is desirable as an assistant coach is Grantham. Saban and Miles have had these former assistants become head coaches: Fisher, Dooley, Pelini, Peveto, Porter & McElwain. We all know that Smart could have already been a head coach somewhere.

Georgia Tech has the nation’s highest average SAT score for football players, and also the highest average high school GPA.

UGA had one of the lowest SAT averages, as well as a very low GPA average. As a result, three-fourths of UGA players are “special admits,” when means that they can not meet the minimum educational and intelligence requirements for admission to UGA, even as extremely low as that is.

Yes, it would be great if Tech was competitive with UGA, but Tech fans are proud of our heritage of having intelligent, responsible athletes who go on to rewarding careers and contribute to society.

Contrast this with the very unintelligent morons that UGA recruits. The 50 arrests over the last four years is proof enough, not to mention winning the Fulmer Cup. Most of these losers are tossed out after their eligibility is over, and many end up on the street looking for handouts

UGA is clearly just a football assembly line dedicated to winning at all costs, and most UGA fans are okay with this, with no concern about the embarrassment this brings to the State of Georgia.

Mark Richt is the creator and perpetrator of this situation. As long as he is paid a huge salary, he will continue to recruit the illiterate brain-dead punks he thinks will win. Unfortunately for UGA fans, he’s not remotely in the same league with the top coaches in the SEC.

So the bottom line is: Georgia Tech – win or lose – does so with honor and integrity, while the lowlife punks, woman beaters, drug users, and drunks in Athens continue to embarrass us all.

Some appropriate words...

A few comments about UGA:

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. Red panties and hashbrowns.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

kingdaddy Troll King of the AJC Blogs…..

Why would you allow your idiotic self to be proven to be such an ignorant fool by trying to turn statistics around to make your UGA doggies to look much better than they really are. Winning is about winning it ALL, not going .500 plus better against inferior teams.

Losing to 17 out of 20 ranked teams does nothing to support your weak cause.

UCF, Colorado, made it even worse under CMR after his 10th year. You really need to look at how your coaching staff ranks in the SEC, not very high. It is about the coaching, if you go out and get a ton of star players yet they stay suspended or flunk they do not do you much good.

As always, the key for GT will be the defense. There are signs of brightness. Especially in the secondary. Attaochu is an NFL type of prospect as an OLB. The rest of the LB corps is a bit of an unknown. Hopefully Nealy/Drummond/Watts can produce an All-ACC type player between the 3. They are all decent players, but at least one of them needs to take the next step up. And of course, there’s Hunt-Days and other younger players who may also shine. The DL is the biggest question mark. Who is going to replace Walls and will that person be better than he was? If Barnes or Green or someone else can step up and be better than Walls, that is a gigantic bonus. And if GT can get another OLB to be an approximation of Attaochu, that will open up plays for the DEs to make plays in the backfield. I feel like the DEs have a decent amount of talent, even though Cross is the only one who has really played consistently enough to even warrant NFL mention to this point. The offense will be fine, as always. Probably not spectacular, especially with Tevin at QB, but they will get their yards in most games. What I want from the offense is no 3 and outs. To me, that should be the goal. And the second goal should be 50% passing. If GT can start hitting their passes at 50%, that would be such a big improvement over the past 4 years. Greene and Waller are big guys in the Demaryius/Hill mold, but they are both sophomores and PJ has never had two that big at that experience level. Jackson is the older guy who never reached his HS potential, but he can play both A-back and WR, and that would be awesome to see him split time at both positions. And then there’s Moore who has some experience, and can add some production if he reaches his potential. There are plenty of RB’s at both A and B back. Obviously, Orwin is the best of the bunch, but the group will hit their numbers as long as the QB does his job. And this is the biggest point of contention on offense. Is it going to be Tevin all year long? He proved himself as a competent game manager last year, but he is not a game changer athletically or passing wise. From what we saw last year, Synjyn is the most athletic runner, but we didn’t see him be a game manager like Tevin. And then there’s Vad who is supposed to be the passer, but we haven’t seen him in a game against D-1 competition. This kind of leads me to believe that the QB position should be a rotational thing this year with Tevin as the lead, and Synjyn and Vad getting turns against different opponents based on how they are playing defense and who has been better in their previous turns. The whole idea of the PJ offense is that if the QB is marginally effective, the offense will be at least average, but if the QB is better than marginal, than the O has some explosive potential. The two areas I want to see improvement the most on are TFL and 3rd and Outs on Def and an improved passing game on O meaning less 3 and outs. Looking at the schedule, I see 5 guaranteed wins, 3 toss up wins(out of 6 games), and then there’s Uga. Now, if GT hits on all cylinders, I can see a 10-2 season(or better). VT, Climpson, and U(sic)ga are the 3 toughest games on the schedule. And those are all away games. What I am saying is that GT should not finish worse than 7-5. But I would think that the team goal should be a Coastal Champ and more. For me, I’ll be honest. I don’t have much faith in Tevin, and I don’t know enough about Synjyn and Vad. And then there’s a defense that has had too many problems creating pressure. I’m going to say 8-4. But secretly, I am really hoping for 10-2.

“So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?”
**********************************************
I give Richt fits at times – especially during football season.

But for the life of me, I can’t figure out little techies making fun of him, when he has a 10-1 (and counting) record vs the Jackets, including a 3-1 record vs the “New Sheriff in Town.” That same “Sheriff” who has yet to win a bowl game, and owes Willie Martinez BIG, for his single, comeback win over his in-state rival. The same “Sheriff” who says when he loses to UGA, that he “has bigger fish to fry.” What, bigger fish like bowl opponents? Hoo-boy!

It seems the better question is, “So why is Ga Tech paying Paul Johnson millions of dollars a year?”

? I don’t get on Mark Richt’s case. Most of us, at GT,, are okay with him. He seems like a decent guy. Vince Dooley, couldn’t stand him! Don’t mistake our distaste for UGA as anything negative toward him. I think most of the nasty remarks about him actually come from UGA fans. Although, they tend to come near the middle of the season after you have lost a few games.

A few comments about UGA:

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. Red panties.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

It’s common knowledge and an unquestioned fact that UGA head football coach Mark Richt has brought shame on the state of Georgia and made an embarrassing laughingstock of the state’s largest university. Even the most avid UGA fans understand this even when they won’t acknowledge it, bless their hearts. :-)

I don’t see us being good enough to beat whoever comes out of the West. Also, if South Carolina is good enough to beat Georgia (and I think Georgia will win), I don’t see them losing to the Gators. We saw how much better LSU was than Georgia last season. Don’t get me wrong, I expect improvement from the Dawgs this season, but not up to an elite level. I’ll say an SEC East title and close game against a really good West division team. The defense should be awesome, but that o-line has a lot to improve on.

North Georgia Dawg

Virginia Tech is no Alabama, but they are just a better team than Georgia Tech unless the Jackets show significant improvement on defense. Georgia should be good, but I’m not buying the hype with that offensive line. LSU’s defensive line will be one of the best in the country and I don’t see us doing much against their front 4. 10 or 11 wins is more likely and a win over the Gamecocks sounds more likely than an SEC title. I hope I’m wrong though.

Nice analysis, Mark! There are four big question marks for me this year. O line; Special Teams; play calling that helps our young line; and discipline issues. If the Dawgs handle those issues, I think we can beat anybody. If any of the them turn out to be big problems, we will have a struggle on our hands. I think we have more talent this year than any year I can remember, particularly on D. Go Dawgs.

Gotta hand it to ya Mark, you’ve stuck your neck out even further than you did last year.
And last year you were right – though our performance afterwards was painful to watch in the SECC and Bowl Game.

But we may experience an even or debacle of pure defeat due to the weakness (by chance) of our schedule. We go to a big bowl game and get killed – hell, that’s worse than not going at all.

My prediction is 9-3 at best and we avoid the embarrasement of being raped by Ohio State or Texas.

Wow!! It seems that Georgia always starts the season as a dark horse to win the Title. UGA has better than good talent but in the big games who’s showed up besides Boykins? Branden Smith, Isia Crowell, Aron Murray, Malcolm Mithchell and crew all seem to choke during crunch time. They haven’t stopped Lattimore in 2 meetings where he’s just dominated them. Clowney can’t be stopped and the mental let downs have dogged UGA since CMR has arrived in Athens. And please let us not forget that Vandy should’ve won that meeting last season. And let’s be brutally honest, if anyone thinks that UGA can play with Alabama or LSU your out of your mind! Those teams are on another level!! Besides… the last big game UGA won was??? SEC Championship against LSU? 1980? “FORGETABOUTIT” GT? Offense keeps you from getting great recruits.
