Jarvis Jones imparts a big bruise on the Big Blue. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Jarvis Jones, Georgia Bulldog. Second-best player in the land?
The inescapable Mel Kiper of ESPN Insider rates Jones the No. 2 player on his Big Board for the 2013 NFL draft, which is only 50 weeks away. He slots Jones behind Matt Barkley, the Southern Cal quarterback, and ahead of Barkevious Mingo, the LSU defensive end. Here’s Mel on Jones (all links requires registration):
Explosive, relentless edge rusher, profiles well as a 3-4 OLB. Great first step, violent hands, extremely good burst off the snap, tackles well, closes fast. Could improve against run, but coaches there also tell me people don’t realize how well he can cover.
More UGA-related Mel: He rates Bacarri Rambo second among senior safeties; Jonathan Jenkins second among senior defensive tackles; Aaron Murray fifth among junior quarterbacks (behind both Tyler Bray of Tennessee and AJ McCarron of Alabama); Kwame Geathers fifth among junior defensive tackles; Alec Ogletree second among junior linebackers and Jones first among junior outside linebackers.
(Factoid: Barkley and Jones were briefly Southern Cal teammates, Jones having signed with the Trojans out of Carver-Columbus before transferring to Georgia. For the record, Barkley was the No. 5 prospect in Rivals’ Class of 2009; Jones was No. 72.)
You’ll note that five of those six Bulldogs play defense. You might also note that Kiper names six LSU defenders among his top five juniors at each position.
You might also note that one Georgia Tech player is included among Mel’s listings of top seniors or juniors: Omoregie Uzzi, ranked fifth among senior guards. You might also note that the player listed No. 4 on his Big Board — quarterback Logan Thomas of Virginia Tech — is set to oppose the Yellow Jackets in their opener on Labor Day night. So why am I starting to like the Jackets’ chances in that game?
No need to answer all at once.

Auburn was ranked until we mashed them. Florida is the biggest game of the year. We beat them. The SEC title is huge. Murray threw 2 more TDs that were dropped. I would like to see how things would go with us up 24-0 and smart enough to punt the ball 35 yds out of bounds. We might be defending SEC champs. The INT late vs Michigan St was tipped at the line by a finger. Murray didn’t throw it to the DB. Half of our country is now stupid. Obama polls 46%.

Now 2013, rebuild the D..might have some hiccups, this is where we see how great of a coach TG is. Also, Murray might make some dumb decissions, but still you know what you have in him. I think Murray’s ranking is accurate up to today. As a Dawg, I’m frustrated with Murray. I think most of you fellow Dawg fans feel the same. You see a world of talent in this guy, he has that “potential” to be a great one yet he has not had that critical “upset” victory over a top rated team.(or any top 20 team)
If Murray get’s it going and can beat SC, FL Missou and if UGA makes it to the SEC CG and beats the SEC West winner, this lable will dissappear and Murray will go very high in the draft next year. There are a lot of “ifs” in there. This is his JR year, it’s make or break time for Murray.
I hope he proves all of us doubters wrong!

VegasMike, on Jarvis Jones,
Ok BSU has a quick passing attack and they had a ton of 5th year seniors last season…how many sacks did they give up to anyone?
LSU got 12 freaking yards in the 1st half of the SECCG and NO 1st downs in the 1st half of the SECCG!!! How many attempts to get a sack did he get? In the second half…they practically abandoned the passing game and relied on the running game…did you even watch that?
MichSU was dominated in the first half as well…but the 2nd half was not good for the UGA defense.
SC freaking scored most of their points via the UGA offense and special teams
Jarvis Jones is a special player and a great, unselfish teammate…he will kick behind on Sundays. Sacks are special, but it goes beyond that.

My Dawgs might win 10-12 games this season, but if we’re not competing with LSU’s and Alabama’s for National Titles, does it really matter?
The bottom line is that Alabama, Florida, Auburn, LSU and even Tennessee have a higher standard of excellence than UGA does in regards to their respective athletic programs. If we don’t know how to make something great, we simply won’t. If we don’t know that greatness is possible, we won’t bother attempting it. Our fan-base, alumni and current athletic department literally does not know any better than good, because if we did we would demand more. What we need is someone with a fresh perspective, who has been a part of greatness. Greg McGarity knows what greatness looks like having been a part of it at Florida. The question with him though is can he be a guy who can make tough decisions(i.e. letting go of popular coaches like Mark Richt and Andy Landers) in order to usher in a new era of greatness? Or is he just some pencil pusher who was a part of the Florida machine? Time will tell. But one thing is clear, the old guard that hired and supported Richt( Dooley, Evans, Adams) will all be gone when Adams retires next year. If Richt’s teams plummet below 8-4 again, he will be gone.Mark my words.

What games, pray tell would be considered upsets? UGA should be ranked in top ten before season starts, and should be favored in every regular season contest in 2012. Now, the Dawgs may or may not be favored at South Carolina, but we will see. Anyone who thinks Mizzou has a chance against UGA are the same idiots that will vote for Obama a second time. Folks, Georgia will be back to being what it is supposed to be in 2012, and while the team may or may not win every game on it’s schedule, there is no legitimate reason for a loss with this schedule. McGarity knows this, and Richt even knows this. Richt is not an idiot, he knows two things, 1.- That he was given a gift in this 2012 schedule, and 2.-That the UGA Football Team that he has on hand should not lose to any team on that said schedule. He does know however that it is his job to make sure his team does not lose to any of these inferior teams this year, and that if he does allow that to happen, that his hot seat status immediately returns. I believe that Richt fully understands his team’s task at hand, and he and Grantham know full well what it will take to get through the early going with the loss of the suspended players. I also think that he knows that he has a better OL than he has had in a while, and also some maturing at the tailback position, both in running the ball and blocking for Murray, will get his offense back to where he wants it. I agree with the post I read on an AJC blog recently, there are a lot of people posting on these blogs, mostly as Bama fans that know full well what UGA will be this season, and are scared to death of it.

What !!! No Star Lotulelei? He’s the best player in the draft and I only wish that the Falcons could somehow move up for his services.

Aaron Murray fans… Please don’t confuse great statistics with being a top NFL prospect…
Luck and Murray may have had “similar” stats, but scouts don’t look purely at stats… If that was the case, Kellen Moore and past numbers machines like Colt Brennan would’ve been a top level selection and he wasn’t…
Size, speed, arm strength, athletic ability are much bigger fators than yards and touchdown to interception ratio… Luck and Griffin and Tannehill are supreme athletes who can also play quarterback… Even Brandon Weedon showed much better than average athletic ability… All four have the physical attributes AND they had the stats and intangibles…
