Kiper lists UGA’s Jarvis Jones No. 2 among NFL prospects

Jarvis Jones, Georgia Bulldog. Second-best player in the land?

The inescapable Mel Kiper of ESPN Insider rates Jones the No. 2 player on his Big Board for the 2013 NFL draft, which is only 50 weeks away. He slots Jones behind Matt Barkley, the Southern Cal quarterback, and ahead of Barkevious Mingo, the LSU defensive end. Here’s Mel on Jones (all links requires registration):

Explosive, relentless edge rusher, profiles well as a 3-4 OLB. Great first step, violent hands, extremely good burst off the snap, tackles well, closes fast. Could improve against run, but coaches there also tell me people don’t realize how well he can cover.

More UGA-related Mel: He rates Bacarri Rambo second among senior safeties; Jonathan Jenkins second among senior defensive tackles; Aaron Murray fifth among junior quarterbacks (behind both Tyler Bray of Tennessee and AJ McCarron of Alabama); Kwame Geathers fifth among junior defensive tackles; Alec Ogletree second among junior linebackers and Jones first among junior outside linebackers.

(Factoid: Barkley and Jones were briefly Southern Cal teammates, Jones having signed with the Trojans out of Carver-Columbus before transferring to Georgia. For the record, Barkley was the No. 5 prospect in Rivals’ Class of 2009; Jones was No. 72.)

You’ll note that five of those six Bulldogs play defense. You might also note that Kiper names six LSU defenders among his top five juniors at each position.

You might also note that one Georgia Tech player is  included among Mel’s listings of top seniors or juniors: Omoregie Uzzi, ranked fifth among senior guards. You might also note that the player listed No. 4 on his Big Board — quarterback Logan Thomas of Virginia Tech — is set to oppose the Yellow Jackets in their opener on Labor Day night. So why am I starting to like the Jackets’ chances in that game?

No need to answer all at once.

I will ask again HOW or What happened to get USC to say Jones was TOO hurt with a broken neck and had to leave USC west? The way he is playing something doesn’t sound right. he is too good to have been sent home.

Kiper does get it right sometimes , I do think he has the best Job !! making milliions just by watching film and talking about what he sees in a guy . But I wonder if he talks to them one on one , I would hope he does and get to know the character of the guys he rates. We know as bulldog fans how good these guys are we seen it . And Jarvis is a monster on the field of play I know that OL on the other side is always looking for # 29 . GO DAWGS!!!!

@ I dropped My Fried:

According to ALL reports JJ FAILED his USCw physical and talked with UGA who checked him out (thoroughly ???), signed him and the rest is history.

I love JJ and he has shown us his charactor by becoming a high NFL draft pick while becoming a great leader for UGA….all this after sitting out a year and delaying his eventual NFL career to spend another year with the Dawgs, hopefully at least another championship of some type

What a DAMN WARRIOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ll be happy when Mark and the Dawgs beat a good, ranked football team. They lost ALL 4 of the most important games last year……….And I know i’m doom and gloom, but this years schedule and this D will lull some Dawg fans into thinking we’ve arrived. Wait till 2013 is over with 10 new defensive starters and a real, much improved schedule, then bark………..or not.

If we can survive the electricity and offense @ Missouri (and minus Rambo and Ogletree) and get a W – There is no team on our schedule that can match up well against our D. We might give up under 150 points this season.

Kellen Moore WINNER undrafted at 6′ Won big games, great leader and passing ability

Aaron Murray LOSER 5′11″ Never beat a winning team, poor leader, weak arm, inaccurate

Auburn was ranked until we mashed them. Florida is the biggest game of the year. We beat them. The SEC title is huge. Murray threw 2 more TDs that were dropped. I would like to see how things would go with us up 24-0 and smart enough to punt the ball 35 yds out of bounds. We might be defending SEC champs. The INT late vs Michigan St was tipped at the line by a finger. Murray didn’t throw it to the DB. Half of our country is now stupid. Obama polls 46%.

NFL wants pass rushers…Who is better than Jones at getting to the QB? It’s not stating that he is the 2nd best player at any position, but what the NFL is looking for next draft. Pass rusher, none better, top 5 pick is a lock!! GO DAWGS!!
Now 2013, rebuild the D..might have some hiccups, this is where we see how great of a coach TG is. Also, Murray might make some dumb decissions, but still you know what you have in him. We might see a reverse in things in Athens, a great O with all the tallent at RB and recievers.. and mediocre D…..GATA DAWGS!!!

I think Murray’s ranking is accurate up to today. As a Dawg, I’m frustrated with Murray. I think most of you fellow Dawg fans feel the same. You see a world of talent in this guy, he has that “potential” to be a great one yet he has not had that critical “upset” victory over a top rated team.(or any top 20 team)
If Murray get’s it going and can beat SC, FL Missou and if UGA makes it to the SEC CG and beats the SEC West winner, this lable will dissappear and Murray will go very high in the draft next year. There are a lot of “ifs” in there. This is his JR year, it’s make or break time for Murray.
I hope he proves all of us doubters wrong!

Georgia could have 10 defensive players drafted net year

Jarvis
Ogeltree
Jenkins

S Williams
Rambo
A Jones
C Washington

And possibly Sanders Commings, Gilliard, Robinson and Branden Smith

Should be a stout D.

uga and richt have some really great talent but you still have to factor in that ala and lsu had more thus the natl championships..aub had 2 really great players at the right time cam and fairley, uga now has the talent with expereince ,which they havent had in about 5 or 6 years ,all at once anyways. uga might have top 5 talent but ala and lsu has top 1-5 most years. but the tide is tunring now in the Dawgs favor.

i am perfectly happy with murray,,he is gettng better each year and when he has the running game and o-line working at the same time he wont have to try and do too much.. he is now a red shirt jr so look for him to put it all together this year and next year. he is by far the best qb right now uga has . he does have some really good back ups too and they too will be just as good as murray or even better by the time they are red shirt jrs. just a great job of recruiting for coach richt and the rest of the coaches. the future looks very bright for the dawgs and we have coach richt to thank for it. being stable and consistant and how he treats players only helps the bulldogs in future recruiting rankings.

i would have murray ahead of tyler and maybe a head of aj because of murrays ability to run/scramble…after the year is over kiper will too. this year uag will have a running game and passing game which murray has not had both at the same time.

Jarvis Jones got

0 sacks against ranked teams (Boise, SC, LSU, Mich St).

0 tackles for loss against SC/LSU or Mich St

He’s not a big game type of guy, makes his stats beating up on 4 bad teams.

VegasMike, on Jarvis Jones,

Ok BSU has a quick passing attack and they had a ton of 5th year seniors last season…how many sacks did they give up to anyone?

LSU got 12 freaking yards in the 1st half of the SECCG and NO 1st downs in the 1st half of the SECCG!!! How many attempts to get a sack did he get? In the second half…they practically abandoned the passing game and relied on the running game…did you even watch that?

MichSU was dominated in the first half as well…but the 2nd half was not good for the UGA defense.

SC freaking scored most of their points via the UGA offense and special teams

Jarvis Jones is a special player and a great, unselfish teammate…he will kick behind on Sundays. Sacks are special, but it goes beyond that.
