Bobby Petrino: On leave, in trouble and maybe out of a job

Bobby Petrino has been placed on administrative leave. Ordinarily this is a prelude to getting fired, but Bobby Petrino coaches football in the SEC. And we’re about to see if Arkansas places a higher premium on winning football games — which Petrino has — than on cornball stuff like family values.
Speaking of which: Bobby Petrino first said he’d spent Sunday with his family at a lake before hopping on his motorcycle. If he had, he wouldn’t be on administrative leave.
Turns out Petrino hadn’t been riding alone. Turns out, via the police report, that Petrino had been accompanied by a 25-year-old woman whom he’d just hired as the football team’s “student-athlete development coordinator.” (Memo to would-be cover-uppers: Police reports are pesky things.) Turns out Petrino lied in his first public statements, same as he’d lied to Arthur Blank when he told the Falcons’ owner, “You’ve got yourself a coach” — 27 hours before surfacing in Fayetteville, Ark.
Petrino has since acknowledged an “inappropriate relationship.” Though he, oddly, described it as “previous.” Does that mean it has ended? That true romance took a hike the instant he lost control of the bike? Ah, the vagaries of the human heart.
Of greater concern to athletic director Jeff Long is surely this: Did the coach hire the 25-year-old Jessica Dorrell — a press release was issued just last week — only because of her expertise in “student-athlete development”? (She’d previously been an Arkansas volleyball player and a fundraiser for the Razorback Foundation.) In announcing her appointment, Petrino is quoted as saying: “[Dorrell] is familiar with what the University of Arkansas can offer.”
(In other news, Dorrell reportedly is engaged to the director of operations for the Arkansas swimming and diving team. The wedding date is set for June 9.)
Long moved to put Petrino on leave Thursday night, only hours after the police report was made public and the coach finally came clean to his boss. But there is, in athletic departments housing a major football program, a sort of reverse pecking order: The AD is technically in charge, but the football coach is the bigger deal.
Of all people, Long shouldn’t have been blindsided by such duplicity. He handled the search that resulted in Petrino standing in Fayetteville calling the Hogs on a Tuesday night after coaching the Falcons on a Monday. Rumors of Petrino’s departure had been swirling before the game, prompting Blank to confront Petrino, who offered his handshake assurance he’d be staying. This prompted Blank to tell newsmen he looked forward to the Falcons moving boldly forward under “CEO Bobby Petrino.”
The next day: See ya later, CEO.
The same Petrino infamously interviewed for an Auburn job that wasn’t open in November 2003. He denied any contact with Auburn officials until reporters from the Courier-Journal offered documentation of a private plane registered to the Montgomery bank controlled by the toxic Tigers booster Bobby Lowder landing in Sellersburg, Ind., which sits across the Ohio River from Louisville, where Petrino was then coaching. The backlash was such that Auburn’s president and AD wound up resigning.
But Petrino? He kept coaching the Cardinals, leading them to an 11-1 season in 2004 and an Orange Bowl victory in 2006. He’d signed a 10-year contract to remain at Louisville despite many more flirtations with other schools/teams. Then, in January 2007, he left to coach the Falcons. That lasted 13 games, 10 of them losses. (The Falcons were without Michael Vick.) Then he split for the Ozarks.
In sum: Petrino has long been a selfish jerk, but people keep hiring him because he wins. When it comes to coaches, administrators tend to develop cognitive dissonance: “He’s a jerk, but he’s a winning jerk.”
Long has pledged to conduct a review, but let’s note again: This AD hired Petrino, baggage and all, and has seen him win 21 games over the past two seasons. We’re about to see if Petrino, his belatedly admitted indiscretion aside, can deploy his won-lost record as the ultimate defense. We’re about to see if a bad guy gets to keep his job just because he’s a good coach.

Morally and socially Petrino’s actions are inappropriate, but I don’t see why or how this affects his capacity to coach a football team. He is definitely a tool bag and I am not condoning his actions, however he did not get a DUI and was in no violation of any law when the accident took place. In all likelihood he is more worried about being on “administrative leave” with his wife than the AD. I would be shocked if Petrino isn’t the piggies HC for the 2012 season.

Coach Dubose was caught having an affair but coming off an SEC championship and pres-season top 3 ranking, the AD at the time Bockrath gave him a pass. Moral questions aside, Petrino’s behavior put the university at risk for lawsuits. Why did his girlfriend get her new job in the football program last week? Was it because she was having an “inappropriate” relationship with her soon-to-be-boss? What about the other applicants to that job? Do they have a claim against the university? Also, Petrino now has a record of lying to the university. If they keep him and some other incident happens in the future in which Petrino lies again, the university will not be able to claim ignorance of his penchance for lying. If I were a lawyer for the university, I will advise the university to terminate him because he is an obvious liability.

Yep. He put the school at legal risk if he is having an affair with this girl. Mike Dubose got fired for essentially the same thing at Bama. If its not just the legal risk its the whole inappriateness of conduct- Mike Price at Bama and Damon Evans at UGA will tell also tell you what inappropriate behavior will do for ya. I don’t think being caught fooling around would get Petrino fired by itself given 21 wins in the last 2 seasons. But hiring a girl half his age that he’s sleeping with to a job that reports to him, lying to his boss that he was riding alone when he had the accident and the University putting out that lie in a press release on its letterhead, those things complicate matters. But my guess is they still keep him and do something to save face like cut his pay. Under other circumstances they could suspend him for a few games but Arkansas is supposed to be pretty loaded this year, they have Alabama and LSU at home and the Alabama game is early so they’re not going to risk screwing up the season by suspending him.
Has Petrino reached out to #1 Arkansas fan Bill Clinton for advice on how to navigate through this bimbo eruption, as they were known around the ‘92 Clinton campaign?
It’s not like the Arkansas AD didn’t know what he was hiring given the behind the scenes visit from Auburn officials when he was at Louisville and the way he quit on Arthur Blank during the season. He’s getting what he deserves.

Damon Evans was a pretty good athletic director, but he sure got canned. A successful football coach is lot more DIRECTLY visible (and receives a lot more direct credit) for a winning team, so you never know.
Petrino needs to quit trying to spin it, though, and just come clean. Claiming it’s a “previous inappropriate relationship” when the woman was all scrunched up behind him on the motorcycle doesn’t sound too “previous” to me…sounds a lot more like a “current” inappropriate relationship.

Some on here seem to be upset over the fact that SHE was engaged to one of the asst. coaches. This one is easy to figure out. She probably had his permission. You know, one of those “sharing” things and “a promotion might be in order if I play my cards right”. Happens all the time. KARMA now would have the asst. coach and Mrs. Petrino start a relationship and get married. Then in a couple years the asst. coach becomes the head coach at Arkansas, and they eventually have a son who will be a star QB at AR. Is that not the way these things usually work out? Fulmer Cup often comes up on these blogs no matter what the topic. The earlier reference to it was obviously made by someone jealous of UGA. Here are some facts.
As of April 2, 2012, UGA is not in the top ten. TCU has an overwhelming lead, and will likely keep it, though they won’t be able to match the amazing score Auburn achieved in 2011. Presently the SEC is repped by South Carolina tied for third and Arkansas and UF tied for 7th.
SEC winners of the award are 2008 Alabama (28 points), 2010 UGA (21 points), and 2011 Auburn (80 points. UF has not won a Fulmer Cup though they are second place in all time points, trailing only Auburn.

Fulmer Cup Reality, TCU will be at the top of the list for a while but you have to give Gary Patterson credit there. He got word of drug use involving his players and had the ENTIRE TEAM tested. That took guts because he knew he would get some rude surprises along the way. To his credit, he took the measures he deemed necessary to deal with it. The numbers themselves look bad but the long-term result will (hopefully) make it worth it relative to the future of the program.

I could care less about Petrino’s personal issues. The guy can coach. He’s proven that. If I was a Razorbacks football fan, Bobby’s indiscretions wouldn’t trouble me in the least.
But he’s demonstrated a pesky tendency to lie to his boss. With Arthur Blank, it came at the point where his next career move was already set. The only thing he had to lose was Blank’s (and his players’) respect.
Arkansas was aware of who they were hiring and figured the risk was worth the reward. I can’t believe AD Long is too shocked about this.
However, if Bobby lied to him, then he might have earned a dismissal.
Tough break for Arkansas (and the SEC) if that’s how it plays out.
He’ll be coaching someplace else soon. He’s a darned good coach.

Tech Fan, I think most of us have strong feelings because of the way he left our local pro team. There never has been a heated rivalry between UGA and Arkansas. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled he left the Falcons, we are in much better shape with Mike Smith, but a copy of a resignation letter left at players’ lockers? No way Dorrell would be making $55,000 a year if Petrino isn’t involved. At 25 years old it is hard to believe that none of the other applicants with PHD’s and Master degrees with many years experience would have not been chosen over Dorrell. This is a disgrace and is a very negative thing for the SEC. I can’t believe that the SEC doesn’t pressure Arkansas into firing Dorrell and especially Petrino.
I will agree that Petrino is a great head coach but he has no integrity and now we find out , no morals, so he would do anything to win. He is a liar and low life and needs to go. I think the University has no choice except to fire Petrino, and they should, because he was slleping with a subordinate and he lied to his AD about it. I am sure that the reason that she got the position, a week ago, was because of this indescretion with the boss. Man, only 59 days until her wedding too, maybe she was just trying to get some bucks for the honeymoon?

The school showed they are scumbags, too, when they hired him in the first place, so don’t be surprised if they don’t fire him. They care more about winning than anything, because they are scumbags.

Winning trumps infidelity. It’s Akansas for goodness sakes. They elected and reelected a Governor who was widely known to have been carrying on with women who weren’t his wife. Yet, Bill Clinton continued to win re-election, hence fidelity is meaningless to Arkansans. Does anyone honestly believe they will fire the football coach who has brought winning back to Hog country, who has won the games he has and has Ark finishing in the Top 5? Yeah, right!! Think again. The young woman will receive a very nice “parting financial” gift right after she signs a “keep your mouth shut” agreement as she leaves town for a new job in another state compliments of wealthy boosters. Between the Wal-Mart, Tyson Chicken and Jerry Jones group she will have a job, out of sight.

Arkansas HAS to fire him. HAS to. I’m not going to argue that morality doesn’t matter like a lot of the dipsticks here, but what he has effectively done is turn Arkansas into a complete laughingstock. The one cardinal sin in college football is you can’t turn your program into a punchline. Some guys do it by losing and not being able to coach their way out of a paper bag (Ray Goff), others do it by molesting small boys in the shower (apparently the entire state of Pennsylvania), still others do it by cheating their butts off (Pete Carroll, Jim Tressel). Damon Evans and Bobby Petrino do it by having endless opposing fans throw red panties at them or wear neck braces to every away game.
Mark my words….Arkansas will be a laughingstock. Every opposing male fan will show up at a game with a neck brace, with his girlfriend in a blonde wig and a bird beak fake nose. This will cost Arkansas big $$$$ even if they win, because wearing Arkansas gear around will leave you open to mockery. How many Penn State sweat shirts are you seeing lately?

Evil (loser) Empire…If ATL were such a loser city, then we wouldn’t care that Petrino abandoned us in the middle of a season….and Arkansas is a better state? For what? Pigs? Yep. Otherwise…no.
The Braves aren’t what they once were, but they did win the division 14 years in a row. The Hawks are certainly a DECENT team.
Bottom line is the FALCONS are much better off without Petrino, we’ve had three WINNING seasons in a row (never had two before) and Arkansas is looking for a way out of this mess that their coach got them into (sounds familiar…has he done that before?
