Julio Jones was supposed to make a difference. He made none Sunday. (AP photo)
East Rutherford, N.J. – In April they traded five draft picks to grab one wide receiver because they felt they needed to be more “explosive” to reach the Super Bowl. On Sunday the Atlanta Falcons saw that grand design blow up in their corporate face.
Their sleek offense ran into the NFL’s 27th-ranked defense and managed nary a point. Think about that. In a league where nobody can stop anybody, the Falcons’ offense was outscored by its own defense.
A year ago it was possible to write off the Green Bay loss as a case of the No. 1 seed being undone by a hot quarterback. These Falcons lost to a 9-7 opponent that didn’t do much itself until it was clear the visiting team could do nothing.
Said Mike Smith, 0-3 as a playoff coach: “I don’t know that there’s anything you can take from this game and say, ‘Gosh, they did this well.’ ”
How does that happen? How does a team with Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Tony Gonzalez, Roddy White and the almost-as-good-as-advertised rookie Julio Jones play a postseason game to so little effect? In his first two playoff losses, it was possible to cite Ryan’s turnovers as the determinant. He made no turnovers this day … and his team lost by 22 points.
It was hard to tell what sort of game Ryan had. The Falcons’ offense wobbled so violently that the quarterback, who the in NFL is supposed to be a difference-maker, made no difference. The Falcons’ longest gain from scrimmage was 21 yards. They managed 247 yards. They failed twice on fourth-and-inches — should have gone for it the first time, shouldn’t have the second — and breached the New York 20 only in the game’s final two minutes.
We ask again: In a league that hinges on quarterback play, how was Ryan marginalized? Smith tried to say that his line couldn’t protect long enough for Ryan to throw any deeper, but he was sacked only twice — once on the Falcons’ final snap. In a game that demanded bold measures, the meek Falcons undid themselves.
Perhaps you see it otherwise. Perhaps you believe this game is proof that Smith is an affable dunce and Ryan an untalented plod who will never win a big game. I don’t believe either is true, but it’s hard to mount a passionate rebuttal after this one. The Falcons were so unassuming — they couldn’t even bring themselves to call timeout near the end of the first half — they made you wonder why they bothered to come.
“We did not play consistent football,” said Smith, speaking of the season, but he had it backward. The 2011 Falcons were very consistent: They beat teams of lesser talent but wilted against those of comparable resources. They were, in a sum, a bully. And when the playoffs commence there are no 90-pound weaklings.
Said Arthur Blank, the owner who hasn’t celebrated a playoff victory since January 2005: “I don’t think we took a step back [this season]. Obviously 0-3 in the playoffs [under this regime] is not where anybody wants to be.”
Then this: “It was disappointing not scoring any points … They made a couple of explosive plays.”
Those were the plays the Julio-boosted Falcons were supposed to make this time. None were forthcoming. Nobody made any plays. Nobody, at least on offense, did anything. When that happens yet again on the big stage, we must ask if the failure goes beyond the guys wearing the helmets.
Asked if he was confident in his franchise’s leadership, Blank said: “I think we have the right people in position because they’ll challenge themselves and ask the right questions. We’ve got to do a thorough diagnostic on why we didn’t perform to our capability. The beauty of Thomas [Dimitroff, the general manager] and Smitty is that they’ll ask the right questions. Where that takes us, I can’t tell you.”
Said Dimitroff: “Anytime you’re unable to get first downs when it’s less than a yard, you’re disappointed.”
Contrary to popular belief, not every team loses because of its offensive coordinator. (Or defensive coordinator, depending on the setting.) It is clear, however, that Mike Mularkey isn’t the man to maximize this personnel in the video arcade of neo-football. There’s a chance he’ll be hired away as someone else’s head coach. If he isn’t, it’s time for the Falcons to try somebody new.
For three years under Smith/Dimitroff the Falcons made clear and consistent progress: From the stunning playoff appearance of 2008 to the strong finish of 2009 to the 13-3 of 2010. There was no ground gained this season. There was only a glaring case of diminishing returns.
Even the man who works hard never to say anything spicy conceded the point. Asked if the Falcons had taken a step backward, Matt Ryan said: “We certainly didn’t take a step forward.”

Team was simply out coached.
What happened at the end of the 1st half, why did the falcons not use their timeouts, then with 4 seconds left use 1 for a hail mary.
1st 4th and 1, I’ll take that but you could have had 3 points
2nd 4th and 1, Falcons punt from NY’s 40, that’s the one they should have gone for.
3rd 4th and 1, just weak, bad formation bad execution.
Next year the Falcons will be awesome, they have everything lined up but OC.

Demonstrably better than Ryan? Check the QB ratings. He’s middle of the pack. There’s your “demonstrably”. Factor in rushing yardage (glaringly missing from the QB ratings) and Ryan falls a few notches further.
He’s demonstrably the third best QB IN OUR DIVISION.

I’ve got all the confidence in the world in Smith and Dimi. It’s Ryan who’s clearly lacking the ability to make the big play. He’s terrible with the deep ball, lacking on the mid routes, which is why so many of the passes he completes are done short. It’s what I expected, but dadgum can’t we get just 1 playoff win some time?!

Mr. Blank, please get a black quarterback to pacify the Vickafants in this city. I know then all of the blame will be shifted to the white linemen and OC like it was when Vick was here, but at least it will be another verse.

First I hate it but I have to agree with the man, Atlanta has the worst fans of any city. Probably because of all the transplants but its true. No need to elaborate, read the blogs, go to the games and then go anywhere else and see the difference.
Second, I know it is always quick to jump on the quarterback first and want to make that change first. However, in building a football team it is usually best that the quarterback be the last piece of the puzzle to be put in place. If you keep spending time switching out the QB you never develop a team. Ask the Lions (who may have got it right this time). The Falcons need to develop strength and depth on the offensive line, build a defense like the Broncos that can even make Tebow win games going 3 for 14 and put pressure on the opposing QB. Get a running back that at least scares someone, some teams have 3 of these, we have none. Then get someone that actually knows how to coach them. Watching our coordinators scripted “mularkey” (pun intended) is extremely painful. After you have all that in place then you can bring in your big arm or mobile or whatever QB because he will be set up for success. Or you might find by that time you already have one on the team like the Patriots did with a late round back-up.

We have focused too much on the skill positions. We need a stronger O-line and D-line. Most NFL RB’s can rack up yards behind a good OL. Let Turner go and focus on building the lines. That’s where games are won and lost.

Reality check: Ryan is okay…not great…not going to be great. Dunta Robinson is a waste of money. Turner isn’t dominant because he isn’t elusive…requires a head of steam to get positive yardage…and he can’t get it. Abraham is too old and injured too much…don’t need a part time player. Sam Baker is exactly what the draft gurus said…an overreach pick. He’s getting schooled when he’s not hurt.
Jury still out: Will give Ray Edwards a free pass for this year…but didn’t really expect him to be dominant…he only had about 8 sacks in his best year. That’s good but not great…and can be inflated if other front 7 are good. Julio…disappears for stretches. Think he’ll be good, but not worth the draft picks given up.
Must Address: Offensive scheme…not working, too predictable and not adapting. Offensive line needs help. Can’t decide if defensive scheme is the problem or that it’s predicated on pressure from front four which we can’t get…but something has to change.
What’s the solution? We gutted our draft picks…and now miss a year of potential high quality draft picks. Have to go to overpriced/underproductive free agency marketplace. Ouch.

The owner denies it, the GM denies it, the head coach denies it, but there is one who won’t shrink from the truth.
There is one man with a voice in Atlanta who is not afraid to point out that the emperor has no clothes. His comrade in arms, in keeping with the good graces required to get into the gladiator locker room would not dare to opinionate. Yes, D-Led must bend to the political reality of his position. Not Mark Bradley. He has the brass. He has the cojones. He has the sense to quite simply state the obvious in writing:

The Birds better get a new Offensive co-ordinator and invest in some defensive players before trotting out on the field again. Start taking money away from White and Jones for every dropped pass, and realize you cant run up the middle 100 times a game which is basically the only running play they have. Time for some changes Coach Smith

The problem with the Falcons is that they dont want to look themselves in the mirror and ADMIT WHAT THE PROBLEMS ARE. I see only one problem that needs to be corrected in terms of the team itself. Then there is a phychological problem in that THE TEAM BELIEVES THAT ARE A BAD TEAM–WHEN IN REALITY THEY CAN BECOME AN ELITE TEAM BY DEVELOPING THE HABITS THAT THE ELITE TEAMS DO, THROUGH REPS (REPITIONS). Its simple to me. The Falcons lack the EXPLOSIVENESS that the Saints, Packers and Eagles have. The Falcons have the playmakers to execute the same explosiveness that these teams have. All they need is an offensive coordinator that can utilize their talents—coupled with another year of maturity by Matt Ryan where he is confident to execute the game plan which will lend itself to more explosiveness. Then when the new offensive coordinator comes in–he will install plays that will mesh with the talent and skill sets of the players and the match should work to the falcons benefit. Example, yesterday when the falcons had a fourth and inches–they elected to use an EMPTY BACKFIELD so the giants knew that Ryan would try a qb sneak and they were waiting with a BRICK WALL to stop him. Instead maybe run a sweep with snelling or just straight out hand the ball off to turner and the chains would have continued moving. Its simple stuff like this that the falcons keep getting wrong–but the new offensive coordinator would get right because they are knowledgable about football and they all want the same thing; for the Falcons to become an elite team. THE FALCONS NEED A NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND A NEW MINDSET. THE FALCONS NEED TO SHED THE OLD MENTAL BLOCK OF BEING INADEQUATELY PREPARED TO COMPETE WITH OTHER TEAMS. THAT IS A LIE AND DOESNT APPLY TO THE WAY THIS TEAM IS BUILT. The Falcons will be elite after the changes are made during the offseason. If the current coach (smith) doesnt understand what the Falcons need to do–then fire him too and bring in new head coach and new offensive coordinator and the Falcons shold be ready for ELITE STATUS.

The Failcons are starting to embarrass the other teams in the NFC South! Way to represent! Maybe Carolina should have gone instead. Pretty sure Cam could have hung at least 10 on the 9-7 Giants. Even Tampa Bay would have dropped a TD on those soft Giants corners.
What was the game plan for that debacle? To punt the Giants into submission? I’d REALLY like to hear Mike Smith elaborate on that aspect. What the heck were the Failcons trying to do offensively? Ground pound the Giants? FAIL. To Julio ‘em until they gave up? Again…FAIL.
Very disappointed in you guys. You peaked last year before the playoffs. Now you’re going backwards. And mortgaged your future to do it! Ouch! The Julio deal was Dumb. That’s right…with a capital D! One of the best receiving corps in the league is built on one first rd pick, two third rd picks, a seventh rd pick, and an undrafted free agent. And those guys just set all kinds of NFL records.
Bottom line is that your problem is scouting. Your talent evaluation process is flawed. Seriously flawed.
Matt Ryan? Fail. Time to move on. Roddy White? He’s a “ME” guy with the dropsies. Move on. Julio? You overpaid and that’ll hurt for a while. Turner? Serviceable at best but he needs help. Gonzales? Past his prime and just collecting game checks until the Hall of Fame calls. Let him wait for that call on his couch. Your O-line is weak and doesn’t give Ryan enough time. Lastly, you have no offensive philosophy. None. It looks like a game of scrabble. You just drag plays out of the hat and try to make em work with no setup.
Defensively…ABRAHAM? Really? He’s done. Edwards? Same same. And your DBs couldn’t cover their azzes with a blanket.
You guys need to evaluate your evaluators. And it all starts with the GM. Evaluate EVERYBODY from GM to waterboy. If they produced up to expectations they stay. If not…cut ‘em loose and find somebody who’s hungry.

Ryan is the 4th best QB in the NFC South (waaaay behind Drew and not even close to Freeman or Newton) and obviously not a leader. When your team sees you “scramble” to get a first down and trip over your own feet, you think they have faith in you to make plays? The O-line was manhandled most of the day, and Pierre Paul, Tuck, Osi and Kiwanuka were LAUGHING on the sidelines. How embarrassing is that?
And I’d rather Ryan come out at the presser and at least “act” like he’s pi–ed off. Where’s the fire? I guess it eases the blow knowing you STOLE $11 million this season.
The coaching was just PATHETIC and again, the “deer in the headlights” look is getting old.
If Blank makes a cold, business decision, this franchise could wind up in LA. Then the RIDICULOUS “Rise Up” theme could mercifully be scrapped.

If the Falcons represented a Home Depot store, how would Mr. Blank react or how should he react?? Explosive growth in year one followed by no growth in same store sales in years two and three would presumably result in a management change in that store to get it back on track, correct?? So why should the Falcons be any different???
It is either the payers and/or the coaches that is contrubuting to this debacle. So, it would seem that a change in management, i.e., coaches, should occur. And not only the OC and DC but HC as well. After all, that would happen with an underperforming Home Depot unit, correct, Mr. Blank??

Before anyone jumps on me for being here I just want to say I am not out to bash anyone here, honestly. I have always been of the belief for SO MANY years when my team was doing horribly to always pull for the teams in my division. I used to live viariously through triumphs from the other teams. In ‘99 I was glued to the TV rooting for the Falcons in the Super Bowl. I watched the Tampa Bay Bucs win theirs and pulled for Carolina in theirs.
So basically I just wanted to stop by here and offer my condolences. I thought, like many of you, that after last year, the Falcons would be unstoppable this season.
Like most of you too, I believe the answer lies in the coaching staff and the need to replace the play caller (not sure of his name). I know enough about football to get by is all, and even I knew the plays would be run, run, pass. Get some better coaches and I think the NFC South will become like the SEC as each of our teams get stronger.

I think Ryan is a smart game manager, but he really comes across as gutless when he will feels any pocket pressure. He slides short of the first down, he scrambles out of the pocket when there is not real pressure, only imagined… Then, he throws the ball away if someone is not wide open… THAT SUCKS!!! I would rather see someone take a chance and make a mistake than play scared!!!

I agree with your sentiments Regina (at 9:33 a.m.). My faith in Atlanta teams has slowly been eroding over the years and the last five months has about completely evaporated it. In the last six or seven years, I have witnessed three teams win three road playoff games and the Super Bowl (Steelers, Giants, and Packers). Last year, I saw a 7-9 team (Seahawks) win an exciting playoff game against the defending Super Bowl champ. This year, I witnessed an 8-8 team led by Tebow beat the mighty Steelers. Yet, the last three Falcon playoff teams (with records of 11-5, 13-3 and 10-6) cannot even sniff victory in even one playoff game. Ugh!!
I am tired of seeing other teams get their improbable victories or go on historic runs in the playoffs. I am tired of seeing other lesser-talented teams come up with the big plays in big situations. Meanwhile, the Falcons fail in almost every crucial fourth and one situation. I see no real fight in the Falcons come playoff time. It is the same with the Braves lackluster and choke performance in crunch time. I do not know where the blame lies. If these organizations (the Braves and Falcons) do not make more sweeping changes, I will forever be lost as a caring fan. You cannot do the same thing and expect different results. Managers and coaches need to be fired. Players need to be held accountable for their jobs. I will leave it to the smarter and more knowledgeable fans and experts to advocate the proper changes. I just want to get some justifiable hope back as a fan.

They just mediocre enough to get to the playoffs (sometimes) and yet embarass themselves once they get there.
