"If I give you two dimes and a nickel, will you give me a quarter back?" (AP photo)
East Rutherford, N.J. – Here’s a fun little nugget that was posted on the New York Post’s web site yesterday: As of Friday night, the Giants-Falcons playoff game was not sold out.
If said game were being staged at the Georgia Dome, we Atlantans would be hearing yet again how lousy a sports town we are. But this is New York, where millions live and where sports are, we’re constantly reminded, a point of strutting metropolitan pride.
Let the record reflect that an attempt to find available tickets this morning via Ticketmaster was unavailing, so we can assume that the game finally has sold out. Still, the thought of a Giants’ home postseason game with available seats not 30 hours before kickoff would surely come as a revelation to those New Yorkers who love to poke fun at us dumb ol’ Southerners for our indifference/inattention.
But I digress. The Falcons arrive with a point to prove, and the belief here is that they’ll prove it. The belief here is that they’ll win because they are, top to bottom, the better team. The tabloids have been full of Matt Ryan stuff this week, the thrust being that he still hasn’t proven anything in the postseason. (He hasn’t, but I’d suggest two games in his first three NFL seasons isn’t quite a true sample.)
I remember another day in Ryan’s pro career, a Sunday here in November 2009 when he overrode a second-half deficit to force overtime. The Giants won the toss and scored in the bonus canto, but that remains, at least to this dumb Southern observer, one of the shining performances of a very good career.
If you can do it here once, you should be able to do it again. And if you can make it here, the song has it, you can make it anywhere. I think Matty Ice will author his playoff breakthrough today, but maybe you disagree.
Which is why we have these little live chats — for you to interact with a dumb Southern writer like yours truly. I invite your comments. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

Mark, in all seriousness, the level of coverage in the NY papers makes the AJC’s look embarrasing. I’m getting more insight on matchups, back stories, etc. from the Post or Daily News (haven’t even checked the Times) than from the AJC. Your paper has taken big strides in investigative journalism and local interest stories here in Atlanta, but the sports coverage leaves a lot to be desired. When you and Schultz chime in, it is interesting. There are just way too many holes in the coverage…especially the couple of days before an NFL playoff game. Just my 2 cents.

We are a great sports town when our teams are exciting and winning 1991 Braves and 1998 Falcons were a blast and the town went wild. We aren’t a great sports city when the product is poor.

Was thinking about going to the game, but dropping $900+ for a pair of mediocre tix, plus $20 in tolls from Brooklyn, $50 for parking, plus 90 minutes of my life spent getting out of that horrible parking lot made the decision to watch at home very easy. The new Mets stadium is great, new Yankee stadium pretty nice, JetLife is HORRIBLE.

Bravesfan79, NO, if you want to see a “crappy sports town”, check out Nashville TN. Only have an NFL team, but neither a MLB team, nor NBA team. (Hockey doesn’t count in the South). The football fans in Nashville are lead around by the nose by the team owner, Bud Adams, and his “little boy assistant”, Mayor Dean. They expect mediocrity each and every year, and this is what BA gives them. Just enough to fill the seats. He goes out and gives “the biggest RB bust in the NFL” millions of dollars and he sits back and does nothing this year. Albert Haynesworth is his mentor. Then he raises the ticket prices to cover improvements on HIS STADIUM, AND THE NITWIT FANS GO ALONG WITH IT. That to me is the epitome of a bad sports town. BTW, the answer to MB’s question is “YES”, from an objective reader who doesn’t have a dog in the fight.

There are reasons as well that Atlanta attendance is sometimes down:
Traffic is terrible.
MARTA is pathetic (no station at Turner Field)
Stadiums are in bad areas
75% of the people who go to games, live in the North Atlanta Burbs. Pain to get to a game.
TV. Much easier to watch at home and eat and drink for free.
Constant failure, minus the 1995 Braves.

There is nothing anywhere like the AJC blogs – as much as I can’t stomach Choke, JSS, and other mom’s basement dwellers who frequent it, what other city generates 70 pages of (frustrated, whiny, UGA style) blog posts for one college game?
If the Braves played anywhere near where the ticket buyers lived, they’d sell out plenty of games and 35,000 would be a regularity. Turner Field could not be in a worse location. The Dome, not much better.

New York is a different sports town market.A lot more people an even more ethnic. long history of sports teams and venues.Hockey nor soccer will never be a big sports draw in Atlanta if the events are down town.If out in the burbs much better chance.Football and baseball are the keys but the prices are out of most family’s budget. With the closer towns that support the New York sports market is why they don’t have trouble selling tickets.Go Falcons lets win one and come home eat our barbecue sandwich and drink our sweet tea and piss on new york.

TODAY NOODLE ARM CONTINUES HIS LEGACY AS A NOODLE ARM LOSER WHO WILL NEVER WIN A PLAYOFF GAME
YES, THEY GOT HERE. YES, TURNER IS A MAN AND THEY CAN CONTROL THE TEMPO OF THE GAME BY POUNDING THE RUNNING GAME
BUT EVENTUALLY RYAN WILL HAVE TO STEP UP, AND HE WONT. THIS IS WHERE HE PROVES HIS MEDIOCRITY.
MANNING IS A PROVEN, BATTLE TESTED QB WHO DOESNT HAVE AMAZING ATHLETICISM BUT STILL MANAGES TO MAKE BIG PLAYS UNDER PRESSURE IN HUGE GAMES.
RYAN NEVER HAS AND NEVER WILL. AS LONG AS WE CONTINUE TO DEPEND ON HIM, WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE WRITTEN OFF AND WILL BE PERENNIAL UNDERACHIEVERS. HE WILL GET SCARED AND CHOKE. CHECKDOWNS TO HANDOFFS AND SHORT PASSES DONT WIN PLAYOFF GAMES, AND HE WILL CONTINUE TO DO THAT TODAY AS HE RUNS THIS TEAM INTO THE GROUND YET AGAIN.

The latter. Roddy White having a big day would be nice as well.
My concern is Ryan being flattened by the pass rush, dropped passes and JJ running the wrong route at a crucial point. And of course Turner and the obligatory 2 yard loss runs which will likely be in abundance today.

Don’t give me the defense excuse, because Ryan has 6 + turnovers in the playoffs.
Art Blank has made it clear about his expectations for quarterback post season success.
If Art is not happy, its really a moot point how we make excuses.

Well guys, this is a game the Falcons should win. Ryan’s in his fourth year, the year of maturity. We have the field stretching threat with Jones, who has come on strong the second half of the season. We have playoff experience with this squad – Green Bay, and even Arizona.
I say it comes down to our defense, and can they hold on third downs, at least enough to give our run game time to establish itself, setting up the play action. If we start out having to throw all day, we often struggle.
Sure wish this was the day our offense steps up and clicks on all cylinders, throwing crossing patterns to Jones, out patterns to White allowing Turner to bust one for 40 yards once or twice.
Come on Falcons’ defense – when it is third down you may want to cover the receivers.
Good luck Falcons.

He couldn’t stop there. He called them the “JagWads” and what a sorry town Jacksonville was and what a lousey team the Jags were. He ate those words and the Jags fans had a field day with him after the Jags went to Denver and beat the Broncos. Here’s hoping history repeats. Paige never had the guts to give the Jags their credit. I’m sure Parker is cut from the same cloth.

I can’t get excited about MM and BVD coaching the O and D. This team has yet to prove it can beat a good team. While I think they can beat the giants, I just think the same bad play calling, dunta giving up big plays, the d line not getting any pressure and a boring lame calling offensive plan will doom us again. Would love to see some offense like the saints. But our coaching and qb can’t deliver.

The guy who wrote that article about us being the worst sports city is a real piece of work. He probably just got dumped by a girlfriend or boyfriend that lives here.
I dont think Matt Ryan is the best qb for this team, and I think the Falcons will wallow in mediocrity and failure as long as he is at the helm, but I think this is a great sports city.
Of course our attendence numbers arent as great as other markets. The overwhelming percent of atlanta residents live out in the suburbs and we have no major metro transportation system. We also have a ton of residents from other cities who moved here to pursue careers or raise families and remained committed to their hometown teams. Does that make us a lousy sports city? Of course not. It just makes the fans that are committed and passionate all the more important and respectable. Its not easy to be a real fan in this town, and to those of you who suffer through the heartbreak of so many dismal seasons, my hat is off to you.
Now, lets get ready to watch Ryan blow this game so we can start looking forward to Braves season.

Peyton Manning lost his first two playoff starts and six out of nine, then won a Super Bowl in his ninth season.

Fourth and inches. How is it that Smith/Ryan can’t come up with another option than to run it up the gut when the whole world knows what they’re going to run. Whatever happened to the bootleg? At this level, if you can’t make six inches on any down, you don’t belong on the field. It’s justifiable to go for it on fourth down when you’ve sustained a long drive, but why blow it up with s stupid qb sneak and all this absurd motion and shifts?

Amazing how similar UGA and the Falcons are.
Coaches are scared to be aggressive. There is absolutely no identity on offense (are we a power running team or a vertical passing team?). Offensive playcallers shrink up like a turtle head when the game gets tough.
The main thing they have in common is that they are MENTALLY WEAK. No toughness whatsoever.

The defense can’t tackle worth a damn. Looks like a high school team out there. Our d-backs won’t hit anybody. And Dominique gets beat again. The Giants give us 2 and then take 7. Wonder if Smith is taking notes. Giants coach: showing emotion, getting pissed off, yelling at players, actively engaged. Falcons coach: deer-in-the- headlights look, passive emotion, looking worried, playing not to lose.

Same old issues. Defense is not good enough or tough enough and the offense has no deep vertical threat. Ryan is an effective QB when your talking about plays at 30 and less but he cannot throw the deep ball despite having two players offer a long ball threat. Ryan has exactly one half to prove whether he’s taking this team anywhere. I fooled myself into thinking he may have passed his panic mode m.o., but that half didn’t look that way at all. The guy just rarely makes something out of nothing. I mean, like almost never. Wrong league if you can’t do that.

Mike Smith is the Wade Phillips of the East. Probably a really good coordinator, but he can’t get out of his way managing a game. That last minute was pathetic. they played it to make sure the Giants didn’t get the ball back, not to try to get some points

These guys have NO MANHOOD. They are a bunch of whimps. Would love to get in there and peel the paint off the walls at the half. Mike Smith will probably have them eating PB&J’s and taking their pulse.
This is an absolute embarrassement, and the problem is that there is not one MAN on that team who will grab people by the facemask and tell them to get their asses in the game. GET IN THE GAME!

Game Over. The most uninspired offense in the playoffs. Tuner tiptoeing into the line, trying to run slow Turner outside. Where is Rodgers on the edge and in space. Why is it Ryan has all day and not a single receiver is open? Ryan breaks containment has a clear view of the field and throws it for a 3 yard gain. Just a joke. Every pass is a down and out or a dump down to the back/TE. I’ve given up on Ryan and this offense. Defense has already done enough to win the game. Offense is horrible.
The best thing that could happen is for the Falcons to lose and Mularky to leave.

I was wondering this too. The Giants safeties and linebackers are very ordinary. Gonzalez should have no problem getting open against them.
I think the Falcons fell into the trap (same one they fell into early in the season) of trying to get the wide receivers too involved in the passing game. Ryan’s strength is hitting the short passes and picking up 5 or 6 yards at a time. Gonzalez should be the centerpiece of this offense, especially in a road game against a defense that gets pressure with the front 4 easily.

“Mike Smith must take chances like Saints did on 4th down.”
The NFL is so in the tank for the saints that any spot goes in favor of the Saints. Fumbles are blown dead, fumbles by the QB are ignored because he jumped over the pile, TD’s are given when the receiver never caught the ball, and blatant holding is ignored.
If Mike Smith could get this treatment like the Saints, the Falcons would have no issues either. Atlanta got screwed on the 4th down spot just like the 3rd down spot. Then the Giants get 2 feet added to each run by Bradshaw near the goalline.

I can hear a pin drop in the Falcons locker room right at this time. How he motivates them will tell in how they respond. Now that the butterflies are out, they will come out with a different momentum. Haven’t heard much from Tony Gonzalez, but I’m looking for him to have a big 3rd quarter and beyond. The good news is that we have a chance to regroup at half time. I don’t know what is wrong with Matt Ryan. He just looks anxious, not confident. He has had time to throw but hasn’t been able to take advantage. While the defense has done great, they had one lapse, that cost us 7 but overall holding the Giants to 7 points is better than we could have hoped for, given how poorly the offense is doing.

Offensively, that was a bad half of football. Being that we get the ball to start the second half, we’ll know early on if we’re gonna hit them in the mouth.
I wouldn’t abandon the run, but that o-line needs to get “dirty”. Honestly, they moved the ball fairly well in the first half, we just didn’t get any points, which makes the half look bad.
