Live from the Outback: UGA should win this bloomin’ bowl

Tampa – The nice thing about covering the Outback Bowl is the sponsor. It’s the only bowl that serves steak and a bloomin’ onion as a pregame meal. I mention this so you’ll know not to expect much in the way of back-and-forth from this correspondent over the next half-hour.
As for the game … well, here’s what you need to know about Michigan State. The Spartans are 7-14 in bowls. They haven’t won won since Dec. 31, 2001. They’re 0-4 under Mark Dantonio. Even Nick Saban was 0-3 in bowls as MSU’s coach.
The Spartans are 0-3 in bowls against teams from Georgia. (Lost to the Bulldogs in Vince Dooley’s final game and in the Capital One in 2008, lost to Georgia Tech in the old Hall of Fame Bowl in Birmingham in 1985. Georgia fans will remember that as the game in which John Dewberry, who transferred from UGA and became Tech’s quarterback, did not partake — he’d been suspended for missing curfew in Birmingham, which isn’t easy to do.)
It’s possible Michigan State could win today, but recent history shows it’s not smart to bet against the SEC in a bowl against the Big Ten. (Example: The Spartans lost to Alabama 49-7 in the Capital One last January. Though Michigan State did beat Florida in the Citrus on the first day of this century.)
Enough. Georgia should win. I make it 27-17, but I’m often wrong. Sometimes even bloomin’ wrong, which reminds me …

I never could have imagined not knowing if The Dawgs had a decent team or not until a post season bowl game. We beat nobody and anybody who was anybody beat us.
MSU is not a great team but they are good.
This game will tell us all we finally need to know about our Dawgs / Richt & Bobo.
If we have a good team then we win. If we are just a team that beats bad teams and loses to good teams then we lose.
I’ll be glad to finally know which it is.

If UGA wins this game, plays 12 next year and the SEC CG and wins that, then if we go to a major, major bowl, the medaiw ould be proclaiming that UGA is the hottest football team in America, having won 10+13 or 23 – 1 “over the last two years or 24 games”, and “now playing for the NC”.

I just hope Coach Richt has the team ready to play hard from the opening kickoff. Sometimes he has a tendency to lose focus and concentrate on side issues…then it takes us a quarter (and sometimes more) to get serious and start playing hard. Thank GOODNESS we’re not wearing any new uniforms.

Hey Columbus,
IC is never going to be “the man” until he can stay on the field for more than 2 plays without getting hurt. Dude is more fragile than my wife’s Swarovski crystal collection. His numbers weren’t bad for a freshmen this year I suppose but I haven’t been impressed with him at all. If you take away the numbers all I see is an attitude problem and being way too injury prone.

1. UGA playin like LSU, winning with Special teams and defense, but throwing too much, and running game is ineffective, won’t work against top tier SEC teams, but orks against Big Ten foes.

this is the problem with Richt’s little Florida Dandy Murray. He throws a stupid interception, making a mistake again under a little pressure. This then gives the other team the momentum. Now the entire game’s feel has changed. This can all be traced to poor judgement by Murray. We have lost Mettengerger and may soon lose Mason because Preacha Man and Booboo always play their favorites. Mettenberger will avenge his transfer with a vengeance next year al LSU.

Mark, don’t try co figure Bobo out because there is no logic to it. This game is a perfect example of why i don’t like coach Bobo as a good offensive coordinator. Everyone points to how his offense puts up numbers… just like the first half.
But when the game is on the line (in the 2nd half), so far every offensive play call is east-west, short passes to the outside! This has allowed MSU defense to become aggressive and cause 2 critical turnovers and get back into this game.
UGA’s offense in the first half was north-south and the vertical passing game… Mich St couldn’t stop us and we were in total control.
Now, because of the play calling A. Murray makes a couple bad throws, turnovers and Mich State has got all the momentum.
To be clear: if something is working and your offense is control the line of scrimmage and moving the ball down the field… you do not abandon the current play-calling and start running different plays! That is the worst thing you can do as an offensive coordinator… thanks Bobo!

Look, i know Murray made two bad throws for interceptions…
but, Bobo’s play calling in the 2nd half has completely changed the game.
Mich St was on their heels because we were playing aggressive and in the run game and vertical in the passing game.
They are looking to make a play and Bobo falls right into their plan with the plan calling. Yes the throws were bad… but as a play caller, you must dictate to the defense when you are leading and in total control.

Timeouts are used to stop surging momentum. Do the UGA coaches know that the mo has switched and they need to make some adjustments to stop it. Thank god for the defense. CMR needs to get it in his head that Bobo has to go. I don’t care who he is married to. This about the team not about hurting someones feelings. The offense continues to make horrible misstakes. Outside of a few big plays UGA’s offense today has been below average…that’s on the execution by Murray and the predictable play calling by Bobo.

Bobo is incompetent. Murray chokes-cannot perform under pressure. Let’s put in Huston Mason. He is at least as good as Murray and he is much better under pressur in spite of having less experience. It’s really hard to judge Murray I think. He does throw a lot of picks but he usually is right on target when he has time. The poor kid hasn’t had much blocking or protection the whole time he’s been at UGA. Be interesting for sure to see what he could do with a decent O-line.

Murray has made some dumb throws, but the offensive line gets an F- grade for the day. Protection has been subpar and with the exception of Ken Malcome the running game has been in reverse all day.

Uh-oh. I think UGA just had another player tackled for a loss. For every first down the Dawgs gain, they give back the yardage on the next set of downs. Absolutely NO offensive momentum for the O in this game. Horrible execution, questionable play-calling…I feel like the Dawgs are still suffering the bowl hangover they so clearly had last year.
