It’s official: UGA’s Mark Richt is the World’s Greatest Boss

Deep pockets and a big heart: Some combination, eh? (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Deep pockets and a big heart: Some combination, eh? (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Were I Georgia, I wouldn’t just “self-report” this “secondary violation.” I’d shout it from the mountaintops. I’d make it the first sentence in Mark Richt’s official bio, which would now read:

“Mark Richt, in his 11th season of coaching the Bulldogs, stamped himself the World’s Greatest Boss by paying staffers OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET!”

Excuse the capital letters, but sometimes major emphasis is required. This is one such moment. Some football coaches pay recruits. Georgia’s football coach dips into his personal finances to reward the guys who’ve worked for him. He committed a violation, all right. He showed the rest of us what it means to put (literal) money where your mouth is.

In so doing, Richt just made Georgia — unwittingly, but even unwitting actions have consequences — the program of choice should the Bulldogs ever have another opening for an assistant coach or a office go-fer. Richt felt so bad about firing Jon Fabris, a member of the defensive staff jettisoned in December 2009, that he gave Fabris $6,000 when he couldn’t find another job. Who does such a thing in this economy? Who does such a thing in any economy?

Some coaches have the reputation of being difficult to serve under. Richt just stamped himself as the coach you want to work for. We all knew he was a good guy, but this borders on sainthood. (”St. Mark of Athens, driver of Ford trucks and benefactor to unsung associates.”)

OK, it was technically a violation — a violation in the way that jaywalking to push somebody clear of a runaway bus is a legal misdemeanor. I think everyone can agree to let this one slide without penalty. Me, I’d consider giving Richt a raise for philanthropy, but that would kind of defeat the purpose, would it not?

Everybody was criticizing Cam’s Newton’s father for trying to get paid approx. $ 250,000 but what would keep a head coach from paying one of his staff $25,000 extra to make sure a family member was influenced to come to his school.
The staff member can say what he wan’t’s but if his family member chose his school as a 5 star recruit it would be hard to prove the extra $ 25,000 was because he deserved a raise according to the head coach but the AD didn’t feel that way , and not trying to influence the recruit to come to your school.

Mark, I do not want to diminish Coach Richt’s actions in any way, but every entrepreneur or person who owns their own business does this kind of thing every day. I’ve owned 11 different businesses and I have often paid others when I could not even make my own payroll. All bonuses always came out of my own pocket. And I am no saint. Such practice is how a good leader motivates others to work their tale off for “the company.” If you get a raise or a bonus, from even a corporation, that money is coming out of the pocket(s) of the owner(s). Still a note-worthy move by Richt.

It’s my understanding that the NCAA rule violation was that assistant coaches cannot receive “supplemental pay” outside the university. My thoughts on making it legal if the university is not going to increase the salaries per Richt’s request is that Richt have it put in his contract that each year he can apportion a certain amount (either dollar or %) of his pay to be shifted to assistant coaches. This way it is technically being paid by the university but, in essence, still coming out of Richt’s pocket if that’s what he wants to do.

First of all, $6k to this guy is like the rest of us giving a homeless guy a dollar.

Second, I find it interesting how certain “feel good” stories have come out of Athens at just the right time this year. the uga beat writer going with Richt on his mission trip..awww, and now…aaw…he helped out poor coach Fabris……aww…how can we make demands about winning on this guy…he is such a great human being….blah blah blah.

ok, so coach fabris…a man who was making SIX FIGURES A YEAR and obviously couldn’t manage his money well enough to have an emergency fund in case he got fired…uh…thats like a real estate agent not banking any money.. thinking they were going to keep selling houses every day for the rest of their lives…and now…rut ro raggy.

so he loaned a guy some money who was down and out. COACHES DO THAT ALL THE TIME.

I find the timing of this story (in the middle of contract negotiations) to be very fishy…..trying to put some political pressure on….uh huh.

Nowhere did I indicate that CMR would do something like pay a coach extra money to get a family member to come to Georgia. I have complete respect for CMR and feel he has as good of morals’ ethic’s and integrity as a coach can have. Kudos to Richt for doing this, he in theory saved us GA taxpayers a few dollars. The only down side I can see to this is UGA saying to Richt we must be paying you too much if you are just giving it away but that is for his agent to deal with.

This should be a major violation not a secondary one. But if it was CMR wouldn’t think about doing it. My whole take on this is CMR need’s to let the AD handle all the money issues to the staff. Nobody who criticizes Richt criticizes the man’s character. Everyone of his critics recognizes that he is a man of high moral integrity. However, one has every right to criticize his coaching ability, decisions and record. Coaching results per se are separate and divorced from character and should be treated as such. Therefore anyone who criticizes Richt based solely on some aspect of his coaching is well within his/her right and those individuals who refer to such people as “haters” need to start acting like adults and accept the cricitism for what it is. Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion.

There are no IRS problems. You can give anyone $13,000 per year. Or if married, you and your spouse can give up to $26,000 if paid from an account controlled by both spouses via a split gift. Above $13,000, the giver reports the gift on IRS Form 709. I’m sure all was properly handled.

So UGA made him one of the highest paid coaches in college football and you think he didn’t ask for it? He is as money hungry as anyone else. Maybe in this contract extension negotiation he will take a pay cut so that his assistants can get paid more. Good chance of that happening.

There are three types of posters on these sports blogs. The first are people who actually have something to say and a point to make regarding the article. The second are people who are speaking directly to the writer in either agreement or disagreement with the article. The third are the ones who make comments to get a reaction from other bloggers. It may be a logical or illogical comment but the sole intent is to get a reaction from others (preferably an angry response or rant) that feeds their desire for intention. It takes wisdom to know the difference (not that I have it by any means) but sometimes it is best to ignore the trolls and haters.

For all the screamers of Damon Evans admin, before blaming him or anyone esle at UGA, remember Sonny Perdue, he put out a state directive to all department of government that NO
bonuses or raises would be allowed. Therefore, since 2008, state agencies haven’t been able to give out even cost of living adjustments much less raises or bonuses. So yes what Richt did is indeed admirable, the reason these good folks couldn’t their bonuses is because of a former governor.

I think that of CMR’s personal finances were looked into fully, you would find many other donations that would make this paying of coaches look very small in comparison. Richt is a genuine believer in Jesus Christ and as such, he probably gives a lot to his church, mission endeavors and to various other charities. Interesting this article comes out now. From what I was told, he has always taken any bonuses he made and paid his assistants with it. He obviously loves the people he works with and cares for their families. He is an excellent developer and leader of young men, as well as adult men. He is also and excellent football coach. The cycles of talent turnover in college football will undoubtedly leave a team lacking enough in certain areas to have a couple of bad seasons if a coach stays around long enough. It is too bad that Mark had to endure the past two seasons while he rebooted the staff and the program. It wasn’t a quick fix. In a way it was fortunate that we had the down year in ‘09 because we were able to bring in Todd Grantham. Just think, if Stafford/Moreno stay for ‘09, we most likely win all but one game which would probably have saved Willy Martinez’s job. I don’t mean to put CWM down because I think he is a better coach than the masses give him credit for being, given the right DL talent, but CTG is an elite DC and the results of his coaching in his second year are very apparent. I think UGA has the best coaching staff right now that they have ever had. The future is bright. Can’t wait for next season.

Bama has hired a couple over the years but always fired them when they weren’t the cheats Bama has come to expect from their coaches. But I understand that the people of Alabama have NOTHING else but college football and will do ANYTHING to be successful no matter how many rules they have to break to do so, ethics and moral don’t even figure in to the equation. Pumpkin,

There will not be any additional punishment from the NCAA since it was considered closed on Nov. 30th, 2012. I doubt the university would take any punitive measures either since, you can’t get this type of positive publicity when you break a secondary rule, that is not even fully specific about coaches giving their own money. It was made to prevent using athletic funds or to prevent boosters from giving coaching staff any extra money, not to prevent specifically a coach giving his own personal funds to a staff member.
As for the IRS. Somebody said he could be in trouble for not reporting it. According to what I have read and understand, he could give up to 12,000 dollars to an individual and not be in violation of anything, since it was a gift, from his own personal funds. The assistants don’t have to report it as income either.

GT Bob,

You are one piece of work for sure. The reason a reporter was invited to come down and see what the organization does that CMR helps out, is to get more publicity for the organization and increase donations. He has the advantage of being able to do that in his position as a highly recognizable person from a major university. You are the anti-thesis of what it means to go and graduate from tech. as it is obviously very clear, that you have no reasoning ability and as you have stated, just come onto a blog to stir of trouble. I am sure if you really took classes at tech. you might have noticed you had to use some reasoning and forethought, before opening your mouth.
I feel sorry for you, because you will never succeed in life, as you haven’t even shown signs of being mature. Please, please, tell me you have not bred and brought children into this world. It would be ashamed to think you were raising kids to act like you do.

I think he is a great coach and even better human being but there is a reason why the NCAA will not allow the head coach to supplement a staff member’s salary .If this rule was not in place a lot of , not so ethical head coaches would use the loop hole for their team’s gain in the wrong way. Where we all know CMR’s reason would have the best intention’s that would not be the case with some.
Head coaches should be able to supplement a staff member but the Head coach should have to make a request to the NCAA and tell them why he is giving the bonus or the extra salary or a severance. If the NCAA would have the last say I think they would be a lot more receptive to changing the rules. I may not like it but until college football get’s a different governing body someone has to make the rules and enforce them.

For the record. This cheapness on behalf of the athletic department occured under Evans. Gentry Estes, of 247sports, wrote a great post of how little the department spent on the football team under Evans compared to almost every other SEC team. UGA is a very close second to Texas as the most profitable program in the country, yet we spend much less on our football program. McGarity will change this and I honestly believe this could be the difference in the success of the team. I am proud to have Richt as our coach. Go Dawgs!

The coolest thing about GTBob’s hatred for everything UGA and Coach Richt is that it wouldn’t matter one bit to Mark Richt, the Christian man. What would matter to him is that GTBob is a lost soul, and in spite of GTBob’s vitriol, Mark Richt would pray fervently for GTBob’s salvation and would give him money if he needed it. How do I know this? Because Mark Richt’s heart is full of the love of Christ, and Coach Richt wants everyone to know Jesus as their Savior.

Coach Mark Richt…a man for all seasons…just not football season.

You are the best Coach Richt. We are blessed to have him not only as our football coach, but a part of the University of Georgia family. Truly an amazing man who is kind and willing to share his blessings with others. A true inspiration to us all.

This reporting is a great story for this Christmas season in the great state of Georgia.

Dont get gushy bradley. This is more of an indictment of the UGA administration and a coping strategy by Coach Richt than anything else. yes, he is clearly shown to be a fair and decent boss, something we all pray for. However, The school administration HR department should have prevented this from happening because it blows up salary levels and also causes these individuals tax withholding issues. I guarantee you none of these folks claimed that income. Wonder if the IRS is reading this?

I smell income tax evasion all over this one. More than 10 coaches paid “under the table?” Richt asks the university to pay them more. When denied, he decides “to pay them himself.” Plus, the NCAA calls it “supplemental pay.” If this isn’t a nifty way to avoid paying Uncle Sam, I don’t knwo what is. I don’t think the IRS will view these transactiosn as “gifts.” Dig deeper AJC.

I wish I could say that this makes up for all the times he gave raises to poor performing coaches out of UGA’s coffers. It does not.

It is a nice story–but as much praise as he shoudl receive for handing out what is really a drop in the bucket to him…he should receive equal if not greater criticism for increasing assistant coach’s pay every year after increasingly disappointng results.

I do find it ironic that in a world where THE Ohio State gets a slap on the wrist for pervasive cheating and Auburn has become so good at cheating that they are now above punishment; that the NCAA actually takes the time to look into such a positive gesture. Wow!

The real question is, were taxes ever paid on this money? More than likely the only reason Richt gave this money to these assistants is because he was reimbursing them for funds that they gave to recruits. Richt puts on a good front but is nothing more than a cheater. Even with the cheating, uga still can a title under Richt. Sad.

This goes back to maknig a conscious decision to violate NCAA rules. He obviously knows the rules. He chose to violate them. It is cut and dry. What would all you sychophants say if he had given money to a recruit’s family because they were poor? The same probably, i.e. “What a great guy! He knew it was a violation but the family was hungry. He has his priorities in order. What a man of character, etc.” In my book honesty is more impt. than charity. A man of true character would be able to be charitable without resorting to dishonesty. Note-If for some crazy reason Richt was not aware that such gifts, given in the manner he gave them, were improper, than my comments are retracted.

This is a cut and dry issue. Of course Richt new it was a violation to give his ex-coaches gifts in this manner. What would all you sychophants say if Richt had given money to the family of a recruit because they were poor? Probably, “What a saint he is. He knew it was wrong but he has his priorities in order. He knew it was a violation but he thought them having food was more impt. than
any NCAA violation. He should be a dawg for life. What a great man of character, etc.” I suppose
charity trumps dishonesty and character only matters when weighing the outcomes of decisions made? Character is absolute. A person has it or doesn’t and a person with true character doesn’t let the ends justify the means. In fact, the ends should never even come into play. The only thing that matters character-wise is if something is right or wrong. There is something very similar here to the televangelists who started off doing the right thing but took a wrong turn when they believed that they
should no longer have to answer to the flock if they wanted to do something they believed in, regardless of the legality of it or whether they had the approval of it from those who had to approve it. Note-If Richt somehow did not know that the gifts, given in the manner he gave them, were an NCAA violation, I retract these comments. I guess we will never know?

I would not even imagined before now that a college coach, taking his personal income, and deciding to suppliment the incomes of his coaching staff, would even be on the NCAA’s radar scope much less be considered a violation of NCAA bylaws!

What insanity! What crassness!

What amazes me is how a group of men who meet for days and weeks to discuss these rules, would not realize how sullied enforcement of such a rule would make them appear!

The entire basis for the NCAA bylaws is to preserve the amateur status of the athletes. The coaches and trainers are paid professionals. Overall, if the University of Georgia and the paid coaches and staff wish to file civil suit, I am very confident the judge would smack the NCAA hard. It is incomprehensible how any company would presume to tell someone they cannot suppliment their incomes by other means. So long as the action itself does not break any laws, it should be beyond the influence of any private company.

I realize the student-athletes are immediately wondering why they cannot get a summer job without the NCAA bearing its noses down on them. But, the sole sanction against the student-athlete is removal of a scholarship and eligibility. But, for these coaches and staff, who are professionals without any college eligibility, it seems well beyond the NCAA’s intent to regulate such actions.

Wow!
