Live from the Dome: A stress-free Falcons’ victory at last?

Matty Ice, shown in an un-holly-jolly mood. (AP photo)

Matty Ice, shown in an un-holly-jolly mood. (AP photo)

The Falcons have played 13 games. Two have been blowouts: The opening loss at Chicago and the dismissal of winless Indianapolis. In the Falcons’ six home games, all have been in doubt in the fourth quarter, and one beyond that. (Fourth-and-1 at the 30 in overtime. I’m guessing you remember.)

I mention this because we might be about to see an actual Dome wipeout. The Jacksonville Jaguars arrive having already shed coach Jack Del Rio but still lugging the 32nd-best offense in a 32-team league. I also mention this because the Falcons’ head coach has been in the news for having chest pains. An actual runaway by the home side would be the nicest holiday gift Mike Smith could imagine.

I should also mention that the Falcons need only to beat two bad teams here — Jacksonville and then Tampa Bay on New Year’s Day — to reach 10 wins. Ten wins will almost surely book playoff passage and claim the NFC’s No. 5 seed in the process, and you’d rather be No. 5 and have to play the Giants or the Cowboys or the Eagles than be No. 6 and face a Round 1 game in the Superdome.

I could mention other things, but I really don’t feel a pressing need. This one shouldn’t be close, except that the Falcons are pretty good at making games close. Let’s see if they break character tonight.

And with that, the floor’s yours. I eagerly await your comments, questions and submissions for favorite seasonal song. And if anyone suggests Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” that person gets banned in perpetuity. So be warned.

They might have the 32nd ranked offense, but their defense has been pretty good this year, and with the many faces of this Falcon’s offense, I won’t make any assumptions that this could be a “Dome wipeout.”

This is definitely not going to be stress-free – they have an excellent secondary and are likely to not be much affected by the short week. On the contrary, our run defense will definitely be gassed – sore and tired. It will come down to the Falcons being successful on first down with 5+ yard run plays. Hoping they realize now that when Ryan rolls out, he’s much better off than hanging out in a collapsing pocket.

20-13 Falcons.

Yes…we want to see the ball go downfield. FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT, let’s say Ryan can only throw the ball 20 yards in the air. There are many, many ways to turn a 20 yard throw into a deep pass. At least with fast receivers who can turn mid range passes into TD’s. Then you have the same effect on defenses as if the ball went 60 yards in the air.

“Joe Montana: Not the greatest deep thrower. Total bust as a pro quarterback.”

It’s not about how far you can throw it, but how fast you can throw it. Pointing out the lack of velocity on Ryan’s throws is a valid criticism. It isn’t such a crippling limitation that the Falcons can’t scheme around it, but it has at times limited what the Falcons can do offensively, particularly against good secondaries who can quickly close those windows 15-20 yards down the field. I am also pretty confident that it contributes to the indoor-outdoor disparity in Ryan’s stats.

All ya’ll talk about long suffering. I was born and raised around Atlanta. I went to some of the Braves, Falcons and Hawks 1st games here. I was born a GT fan and their decline started in 1967. The 78 WC game was played on Dec 24 – it never got below 39 and the high was 46.

Also, the Falcons were not bad at all in the postseason that year – they led Dallas at halftime of the conference game, 20-13 – but lost 27-20. Dallas went on to win the SB.

We had Dallas dead to rights in ‘78. Couldn’t finish.

1973 was when we lost to Buffalo and St. Louis to miss the playoffs — we were 8-3 and finished 9-5. That’s the year we beat Minnesota on MNF — probably the most epic game in Falcons history NO ONE talks about anymore.

That was 2 weeks after Mazzetti beat the Rams with 5 FGs — only the Falcons could win 7 in a row in a 14-game season and MISS the playoffs.

” Gabbert wasn’t even supposed to play this year, he was third string but the first two are hurt and out for the year.”

This isn’t entirely true. They cut Garrard before the season because they thought they could get by with Luke McCown, and when he predictably sucked they turned to Gabbert. I’m pretty sure Jack Del Rio planned to play Gabbert at some point this season regardless.

I didn’t see why he was rated so highly before the draft, and it looks like in what might end up a pretty deep QB draft, the Jags got a dud. Newton and Dalton are keepers, and Ponder and Locker will probably be at least decent NFL QBs.

@Najeh….I disagree that Gabbert won’t be good or even better…..he came from spread offense at Missouri and he had a fantastic college career but he has a big transition to go through, as you can see from tonight. I heard on one of the sports shows that he was not going to play this year unless absolutely necessary, which it obviously became necessary. I think in a couple of years he is going to be good.

The transition from spread to pro-style offense is huge. Even Cam Newton is struggling at times and so do most QB’s who come from spread offenses….look at the eagles back up who came from a spread offense at Texas….he’s still struggling to make it.

The Saints aren’t playing tonight.

You know what is sad? Fans leaving the stadium during the 3rd quarter. Man, that place is empty. Win or lose, Falcons “fans” got to get out of there early to beat the traffic back to the ‘burbs.

Really ridiculous these trolls that come on here to cut on the Falcons. I’d love to know their motivation. Maybe they’re Saints fans, maybe they’re Eagles fans. But it’s really lame to troll on a Falcons board. Do Falcons fans troll on other teams’ boards? I don’t think so. I’m a big Falcons fan, love the Falcons, and want them to win, but that doesn’t mean I’d go on other teams’ boards and make inane posts to cut on other teams. The Saints are a good team that won the Super Bowl a few year ago, and they earned it. But it amazes me that a small part of their fan base has so little to keep them busy that they need to cut other teams via their blogs.

I once saw a story in USA Today money section about a trailer–80 ft X 12 ft old style rounded roof in a trailer park on a bluff overlooking the Pacific in Malibu that was for sale. Economy was going great then. Asking price $1.4 M with lot rent of $2700/month. Same park one sold for $1.8 M. Story also mentioned 800 sq ft house in San Diego that sold for $800,000. California!!

kerryb: Around here, fat old guys dancing and making fools of themselves is the very definition of class. Did you see the Thanksgiving parade? Google the “610 stompers macy’s parade.” Or look on YouTube for video from the Buddy D parade. Bobby Hebert drunk out of his mind in a dress and wig dancing on a Mardi Gras float is something you won’t soon forget.

Even though Benson is kind of a dick for the way he treated New Orleans after the levees broke.
