Could Georgia hook just one more big fish for the Munster? (AJC file)
Georgia plays top-ranked LSU on Saturday. Were the radio man Larry Munson, who died Nov. 20 at age 89, around to call the game, it might sound a bit like this:
Munson: “Get the picture: We’re wearing red jerseys and silver britches, going left to right on your radio dial. And we have NO CHANCE. They’ve got 12 guys who make Big Jonathan Jenkins look like Tom Thumb. And such SPEED. Even Vandy didn’t have speed like this …
“We kick off to them. Their guy runs right through 10 of our guys — look at that speed! — and gets all the way out to their 25. We have NO CHANCE. But Jarvis Jones breaks through and knocks the quarterback down! They have to punt! Whaddaya know about that? …
“Crowell in the ‘I’ and we give it to him and he goes five, TEN, FIFTEEN yards! He ran right through those monsters! Looked like that professor in ‘Jurassic Park’! And now Murray fakes it and throws it and … we catch it! Over their heads! MALCOLM MITCHELL! Touchdown! It’s a TOUCHDOWN! It’s a miracle! A miracle on … whaddaya call this street thingy outside the Dome? Northside? It’s a Miracle on NORTHSIDE DRIVE! Old Saint Nick just dropped through this roof and smacked LSU with a gunnysack full of coal, and Les Miles is standing there with a nose as red as Rudolph’s!
“I gotta calm down before I destroy some Dome property. Loran, whaddaya got?”
Loran Smith: “Larrah, the lovely Julie Moran sent me a note telling me she’d be watching from Hollywood and rooting for her Dogs … ”
Munson (interrupting): “We kick it off and their man has it. He runs through 15 of our guys and he’s gonna score and there goes our lead. He ran that kickoff back TWO HUNDRED YARDS.Have you seen SUCH SPEED? We have NO CHANCE.”
(We move to further action, as they used to do on Notre Dame replays.)
Munson: “Second quarter, tie game, and LSU’s acting like she wants to score. And we can’t stop anybody. We are so puny and so slow! How’d we ever get in this game, anyway? But now Jarvis Jones knocks down their quarterback again — four sacks for him, Hondo Williamson tells me — and they have to kick a field goal. And we’re down 10-7 and we’ve got NO CHANCE.”
(We skip ahead to the fourth quarter.)
Munson: Getting very, very late now, and we need a miracle. We need Lindsay and Herschel and Appleby all baked in one big APPLE PIE! They’re up three and they’re about to put us away and … JARVIS JONES knocks down the quarterback AGAIN! Six sacks for him! And they have to punt to us! Whaddaya think, Scott? Do we have a chance?
Scott Howard: “We might, Larry.”
Munson (snorting): “You young guys ALWAYS think there’s a chance. We don’t have enough TIME. But looky here! We give it to little Thomas and he knocks people backwards, and now Murray throws a screen to the tight end and … Orson Charles! ORSON CHARLES!!! RUN, ORSON!!! … And it’s a touchdown! IT’S A TOUCHDOWN!!! … We throw a two-inch bomb and he takes it TWO THOUSAND YARDS! We just took a 2X4 and smacked Mike The Tiger right in his striped backside!!!
“But there’s TOO MUCH TIME. We can’t stop them again. We’ve got no SIZE, no SPEED. We shopped at the dime store and they went to Rich’s. And our guys are SO TIRED …
“BUT it’s fourth down! FOURTH DOWN with 61 seconds left! I might be asking too much, but: Guys, just ONE MORE TIME! HUNKER DOWN! HUNKER DOWN!!! And they snap it and … MY GOD! JARVIS JONES! JARVIS JONES!!! He got him AGAIN! It’s OUR BALL! All four legs just fell off my chair! And we’re in the victory formation and we’re under 10 seconds and …
“Sugar is falling out of the sky! NO! It’s little Chick-fil-A cows! On parachutes! They’re COWS DIPPED IN SUGAR! LOOK AT THOSE SUGAR-DIPPED COWS FALLING OUT OF THE SKY!!! …
“We had NO CHANCE! But we had Old Lady Luck! And Old Lady Luck just slapped Les Miles in the face with that APPLE PIE! And that pie had a ANVIL in it! We broke their NOSE! We broke their HEART! I broke my CHAIR! I spilled my COKE!
“We’re going to the SUGAR BOWL! Beignets and crawfish etouffee for New Year’s! We’re gonna paint Tchoupitoulas Street red and black! Who’ll we play there, Scott?
“Houston, huh? Have you SEEN Houston’s quarterback? And all that SPEED? We’ll have NO CHANCE.”

I sure hope you don’t take any flack for this column. This is almost exactly what I think he would say. I love the image of taking that 2×4 and smacking the Tiger on his backside. I swear there were times when I could hear his voice as I was reading.

Will Georgia pull another black out stunt??? LSU is gonna hit Dawgs in the mouth and beat em up. Crowell will take himself out of the game by 2nd Qtr. Dawg fans will leave early as usual when getting beat badly – say 3rd Qtr. It’s well known in the SEC that Georgia has the most obnoxious fans when their team starts to play well. Saturday night they get a dose of reality.

Mark, my wife is a 26-year old lifelong Clemson fan and two-time Clemson grad. We’ve been married for four years and during that time she’s been getting an education in all things UGA. She only heard Munson call a few games before he retired, but since his death, she’s heard all of his greatest calls many times. She works with some UGA grads, so it’s not just me. I think if she read this without knowing you wrote it, she’d easily believe it was Munson’s words.

How is the view from Columbia?
December 1st, 2011
2:21 pm
Hey BuckBlue and Mike the Tiger – UGA has the talent to compete with anyone – they were a young team in the beginning and improved as the year went on. LSU has only played two offenses worth a darn this year – Oregon and WVU – both teams got a ton of yards and points on LSU, but lost because of turnovers. UGA’s offense is more diversified that any offense LSU has faced this year. Game will be tight if UGA doesn’t turn the ball over – LSU scores half their points on turnovers because the run the Red Grange offense. And by the way, how’s the view from Columbia? The reason why we are playing (and the pretenders from Carolina are not) is AUBURN – we gave Auburn their worst beating in 14 years, and the COCKS got beat to death at home (that Auburn team that can’t run the ball had over 200 yards rushing on your vaunted defense). And I don’t want to hear the Lattimore excuse – he played in the Auburn game and was shut down (36 yards rushing, 2 fumbles). Everyone knows UGA pushed USC all over the field but gave the game away by allowing 3 touchdowns due to turnovers and special teams – UGA has grown up since then. Can’t wait to see you in Columbia next year – no Alshon Jeffrey, no QB that can throw the ball worth a darn, and no far A$$ #6 to make plays. Enjoy the Outback Bowl!

In tribute to Mr. Munson, I share this review of my Thanksgiving visit with family…
Now get the picture. It’s been a long day already. It’s been raining all day, the state patrol has had the highway covered tight and the drive to Grandma’s house must’ve taken 5,000 hours you guys. We get there just in time to see Uncle Joe carving the last bit of turkey from the empty carcass. I don’t see how we even get a scrap of meat at this point. I look down and I see two slices of white meat and a leg left on the plate. The clock is not our friend and old lady luck looks like she’s finally left us for good. My wife goes in the door first making the rounds with hugs to all. I slip in behind her and make a quick move for the table. I make the table and grab a plate, now two plates! I’ve got a fork too! Goodgodalmighty, that turkey is right there! It’s right there! Uncle Joe is distracted by the mashed potatoes but he is headed back to the turkey. Is this even possible?
I extend my fork and reach for the turkey, I’m leaning past the cranberry sauce… over the rolls …now just beyond the gravy boat. Uncle Joe is closing in but he’s not gonna make it! Reach man, reach! …… TURKEY BREAST! TURKEY BREAST!TURKEY BREAST! My god! I just reached in there and snatched that turkey right out from under Uncle Joe’s nose! I just stole it from him. Think about all the people who drove from all over to get to Grandma’s. Man, there will be some naps taken today!

and had a flashback to the “day” of AM radios, Saturday afternoons when the voices of Al Ciraldo (GT) and Larry Munson (UGA) would both be blaring in one room or the other, around the house.

I know today’s journalist wants to be known as objective but you know every now and then we need our hometown folks to be a little more of “homer.” Jesse and Furman were beloved and considered great sports writers and they weren’t above finding good in the hometown college teams. After all its not he NFL writer style that leaves a legacy. I hope that 20 years after you are gone people still remember your name and associate it with some warm, endearing story about “our guys.”

Its only justice that the Dawgs shock the world. “We were out of it and gone….I gave up…so did you.” If the game is close early watch those Tiger collars start tightening….maybe Larry can give a tug from above.

Just curious – do folks know that Larry was really seeing ACUTAL SUGAR (CUBES) ‘falling from the sky’ at that fateful Auburn game? I was there when it happened: Folks started throwing the sugar cubes – my guess from the upper deck when we took the lead. I was shocked and amazed that someone was smart enought to think to bring bucket loads of sugar cubes! So – I always assumed that Larry saw what was happening and just described it – but from reading the tributes – I think that fact that there was ‘real sugar falling’ has gotten lost – so now you know the rest of the story! I just remembered getting pelted and loving it (you could say it ‘was’ truly very very sweet momement in time!!!). I have a feeling folks threw the sugar cubes at the Auburn fans too – since they retaliated years later (or the next year) with the water cannons on us… Perhalps fans going to the Dome and to Munson’s memorial should sneak in sugar cubes – they’re easy to buy in a box on the sugar isle in the grocery store and again let the sugar fall from the sky…. AND Dawg fans – remember you can’t spell SUGAR without UGA!

Good piece, Mark. As one who grew up like KCCynic, listening to Larry and Al on an AM radio while sitting under a shade tree in a porch swing, I could hear Larry loud and clear. Those strong bonds to Dawg football last until now and will remain forever. I’m a Georgia Southern fan, but I guess you could say I’m an illegal alein in the Bulldog Nation as well. I’m also an honor graduate of the fabled Munson School of Worry. Until Larry’s retirement, no college season could begin until I heard Larry say, “Get the picture” for the first game. Even if I was in the Boro or wherever the Eagles were opening, that phrase was a must hear. I’ll never forget how he and Chuck Dowdlw announced a GS game against Northern Iowa on our first championship run. He got excited in that one even. One last call that rarely gets mentioned came from 1976 when Lindsay Scott returned the second half kickoff for a TD and UGA beat LSU 24-17. We just beat LSU in Bqaton Rouge on Saturday night!” 35 years later, I hope to hear Scott Howard say something similar.

I too got a little lump in my throat reading it, having grown up listening to Munson. My dad would turn down the tv volume and turn on Munson. There will never be another. Thanks for this. Cheers. The funny thing is that if you ever listened to Munson, all the talk about other teams speed is so true. Regardless of who it was, they always had “one of those track guys” that could blaze down the field and our defense had no chance against him. He built a monster that, if you didn’t see a television image accompaning his radio call, had you scared out of your mind?
Could we lose to Northwestern State? Larry says they’ve got two guys that are faster than any two we have on either offense of defense.
It made every Georgia victory seem like a win for the underdog. A miracle from the heavens. I will probably miss that the most about him.
Thanks Mark.

The thing about this is, I suspect, you – Mark – had to think about what to say and how to say it…with Larry it just spewed forth. I’ll always believe that the man was a ‘throwback’. He did football like an announcer from the 30s. I never realized it until one day I was watching some old movie from about that time that included the radio broadcast of some game…it was as if Larry was doing the game.
Either way, this one was fun…and memorable.

Don’t forgetMark that when Georgia or the other team got down inside the other team’s five yard line they were “knocking on the door”
And when a Georgia field goal kicker kicked for a long one (over 48 yards) it was “watch it…watch it… watch it…it’s good and Georgia gets three on the board.”
And when a Georgia defensive player tacked hard, he “really racked ‘em.”
And the line was “when did she walk in the door?” when something great happened. Who she was Larry never said on the air but it was Lady Luck.

Whether you have memories of listening to Larry Munson call the games from back to 1966 like I have or were just blessed to hear him the last 10 years or so, you can probably understand why sports writer Mark Bradley’s rendition of how Larry might call the upcoming game could be so touching and stir many fond memories. He was a classic pessimist regarding whomever Georgia was going to play but there was NOBODY more excited when Georgia would pull out a win and hundreds of thousands of UGA fans will never forget his unbridled bias toward the Dawgs, his passion and love for the game, his enthusiasm and unrehearsed calls on many critical plays that inspired the Bulldog Nation.
I think Jeff Foxworthy would probably say something along the line of “if reading a made up article about how Munson may have called a game yet to be played gives you good cold chills, then you probably are a serious multigenerational Bulldog fan especially since at least 1966 when Larry graced the microphone to call the UGA.
games.” Foxworthy would be right for me personally as I did get cold chills reading it and am proud of it.
If you are not interested in or have never followed UGA football, all this will probably seem hard to understand.
If however you bleed red and black, then you have to nominate Mark Bradley for a pulitzer as one blogger posted. If you knew and followed Munson’s career, you cannot read Bradley’s “how Munson might have called the upcoming game” without be amazed at the timing in his wording and phrases that Munson made famous, at his recollection of all the games Larry would worry about ahead of and during the games, at the unintended sense of humor Larry displayed, at the raw enthusiasm about great plays etc. It is though you were listening to Larry again. Absolutely amazing work of writing. Mark Bradley knew Larry Munson very, very well, loved the man and misses him as so many of us do.

I would pull off the road just so I could concentrate on
what he was saying and what was about to happen. When more and more of the games started getting televised, like many have said, I would turn down the tv sound and listen to Larry. I laughed out loud a couple of times and could picture myself up at Clarke Hill Lake listening on the radio on a Saturday afternoon. It would be great if it can happen anywhere close to that. The one thing that gives me hope is remembering 1984 Cotton bowl against undefeated # 2 Texas and the dawgs won late, 10 to 9. (# 1 Nebraska lost to Miami that day too!) So yes it is possible and that is why we play the games. Can’t wait to see this one.

Just play our best game young men! How about LSU in Athens when David Greene threw 5 td passes against them or the SEC 2005 when we beat the heavily favored #3LSU for the Championship while being ranked #13. Remember the big score in BR the last time? It was a shame to give up the game on a ridiculous penalty against AJ with the bothched ko and long run by them to take the game in Athens. I beleive these are some of the reasons they play the game! UGA fan in India that will be watching at 230am on Sunday.

I am 62 years old and am from Anderson SC. In the late sixties all Clemsom started at 1 pm and Georgia startd at 2 om. i would go to the Clemson games and coming home We would listen to the Great Munson. I decided to attend my first Georgia game maybe Baylor, not sure, I remembe it being about as hat as you could get it.. Everything went perfect they stll had the train running, it may even stoppned and watched the game. I met one of the nicest guys in the world from Atlanta, he even ask me to have lunch with him. My first Georgia game was wonderful. NO more Clemson Tigers. a whole lot of Larry Munson, Hershal Walker. My favorite player over the years was a walk on line backer No 47 by tne name of Griffeth. Back in those days the stadium was not closed in and you could actuall speak to the guys as they went into the locker room. I was there for most of the home games, he recognied me and alwas spoke. Boy, it was great to be a BULLDOG then and it is great to be a BULLDOG noe. PLEASE can ther be an upset Saturday, This ole Man from SC wants to see one real bad.

The Dawgs are not worried about this game. Hell, they’re juiced and ready! The Dawgs have absolutely nothing to lose and eveything to gain.
LSU Tigers are blowing nervous confidence to overcome their anxiety. They are worried about a loss that could knock them out of the BCS.
If The Dawgs play to their potential and Bobo doesn’t screw things up it’ll be close at first then The Dawgs surge and win by 13!
Well, I can dream can’t I !?

Truly this is the best article you have ever written…ive been reading your work since i was in high school 20 years ago….great tribute to Larry Munson. I have to think that circumstances regarding his passing and his legacy will be a motivating factor in this game. Here’s my version, Mark:
‘we threw it over there six inches and he ran it a mile!… Their guy was over there, they brought the blitz, and the corner was there… he just threw it over there to the big tight end… their corner came up, #7 I believe it was, he was there. I don’t know how we did it. BIG Orson Charles…. He plowed right through the guy, and he ran for a mile…he scored and he saved us. I can’t believe it. I don’t know how we did it… We had NO Chance….24-20…. DAwGs on TOP.’ I can’t believe it. We were gone, we were backed up, and the clock was sticking its tongue out….old lady luck was beginning to stick her tongue out and there was NO Time…but then Murray just threw it over there six inches and OUR GUY broke a tackle, and he ran it a mile and he SCORED….BIG Orson Charles just stomped on their faces and scored…. He ran over Matthieu, the LSU corner, It was #7 on #7 and Charles just got the best of him and he ran FOREVER and he scored and he saved us….24-20 DAWGS ON TOP! I can’t believe it! I don’t know how we did it… He just ran over him and he saved us! Can you imagine the amount of property that’s gonna be destroyed tonight? 24-20 and I can’t believe it.

Hopefully, he will inspire many to want to enter the broadcast field and journalism and excel. We will forever be indbted to Larry for the joy and excitement he brought to Georgia and SEC football.

Liked the idea, but the content stinks. In alll the years I never once heard Larry use an old quote for a second time. It was all original and none of yours was. The veiled “four wheel drive riding up Mike
the tiger’s rear end” as a sorry take off on the hobnailed boot call. Come on, man.. Chick filet falling
out of the sky? Really? Run Orson, run. Really? And all that other crap you came up with is in my opion a sophmorice waste of my time. Truth be told, while I can appreciate your love for Larry’s
ability, and god knows I shed a few tears at his passing and simply cannot listen to dawgs games on the radio anymore, there’s no way of telling what he would have said or how he would have called it
but one thing for sure is it wouldn’t have sounded in the least like this waste of space. Why can’t you stretch your imagination and come up with some new lines. BORING garbage.

I missed the column yesterday – was working (hard for a government official to even say) and since I am now in Texas, only get the electronic version of the ajc. I read it this morning and both laughed and cried reading it. I was reading it aloud, and the lady in the cubicle next to me was asking what I was doing. I told her just remembering a great man. Thanks Mark, for the memories, and for the prediction. I will be watching the game with you and the Great One on my mind. And seriously, you ought to look into doing the biography of Larry. Thanks once afain for brightening my Friday!

I keep reading the following false line: “Georgia hasn’t played a ranked opponent all year.” I researched this… FACT: Georgia played 5 preseason Top 25 teams and beat 3 of them. You can look it up. Granted we lost to two of the highest ranked teams, however in the case of SC we dominated that game. You take away the three turnovers and we easily defeat the Gamecocks. That’s all water under the bridge. Georgia is a good football team, period.

Beautiful work Mark. I could hear Larry all the way through. He sure had a gift of drama and team-bases perspective.

Doesn’t get much better than this, unless the Dawgs pull off such an upset! Great read, and ’spot-on’ for capturing Munson’s on-air personality, so-richly.

For two days I passed this column by because I thought I had read enough Larry Munson tributes. I’m glad I finally took the time to read it. Nice job, Mark.
There is no running back at Georgia EVER who has brought us as much BAD PRESS as Isaiah Crowell has already in just his first 10 games.

It has gotten to the point now, that even his most ardent supporter Mark Richt, has resorted to gagging the tailback and refusing to comment about it at all with anyone for any reason.
This leaves it to Greg McGarity, Mark Richt’s boss and former tennis player here at UGA to tell everyone that Isaiah Crowell will play.
I don’t believe that there is anyone who is concerned whether he plays or not Greg McGarity. The question we all have is what DISTRACTION to the game, to the team, and to our fans, will be wrought upon us all in THIS GAME by Isaiah Crowell ?
Will he be shown POUTING on the sidelines while the nation is largely totally disinterested in this game, unless of course, LSU gets beat by 50 points by us. (Holding your breath?) Most likely the other way.
Will he jump up JAWING at LSU players and be hit with a 15-yard penalty after he has a running attempt for yards ?
He jaws at even our worst cupcake opponents, and they have been many such this season. 10 wins not 1 of which is a team ranked in any poll today and none of the 10-wins will be ranked when the season is over either.
He has all the drug issues.
He has been given preferential treatment by Mark Richt who has KICKED-OFF PLAYERS from this 2011 roster alone to make room for Isaiah Crowell.
He has been criticized in public by his own high school football coach, Carver Columbus Dell McGee, for his DISTRACTIONS.
Against this cruddy # 43 Strength of Schedule the entire 2011 season, according to the Official NCAA SoS, he realistically cannot even make 1000 yards now in this 14-game season for us.
There are Five (5) running backs at LSU who all 5 have run for MORE TOUCHDOWNS than Isaiah Crowell this season already.
He has been SUSPENDED multiple times.
I would have suspended for MORE.
He ran to the Athens Banner-Herald and complained to them about being tackled and how he never expected to be tackled in The SEC.
I believe if Mark Richt is relying upon Isaiah Crowell, that LSU most assuredly have all those wimp statements to the Athens Banner-Herald posted all over their defensive players’ lockers.
He is fragile.
He raises his hands and takes himself out of the games.
He sits alone on the sidelines like there is not a player who respects him.
He runs his mouth on and off the field.
You HAVE to wonder about his grades.
He finds 229 other players on this 2011 recruiting class ALONE who have MORE SPEED than his.
He doesn’t particularly take a hit very well.
This is whom Mark Richt is basing his entire offensive game plan this afternoon.
If Mark Richt is viewed as having NOT BEAT any team who is ranked today YET AGAIN THIS SEASON and in fact finds himself NOT VIEWED AS SUCCESSFUL here at UGA by the alumni and former Bulldog football players and coaches, and national media, it will boil down to this 1 player for Mark Richt upon whose entire career he rests his case being judged as beating the top teams or not beating the top teams on Isaiah Crowell.
Obviously, Aaron Murray is not going to beat any team who ends up ranked in the top 25 for Mark Richt. He never has and will be 0-8 at that this afternoon.
So, what have got going into The SEC Championship Game ?
Good defense, no special teams with walk-ons and no coach, and a sorry running game headed up by this pip-squeak coached by a Bozo and defended as he was recruited by Mark Richt asking all the team to line up in the recruiting process on Sanford Stadium without a tailback.
Mark Richt, NO WONDER he has run into all these issues.
7 running backs, and now we pin our hopes and your career being judged as able to beat teams who end up ranked in the top 10, on Isaiah Crowell.
I wouldn’t give you a PLUG NICKEL on that bet.

What a line. Yes, Larry will be calling the game today for all the UGA fans who have gone before us. In the perfect world above in the heavens, we will win. I just hope the real world agrees.

No one gives us a chance we are too small, too slow, don’t have enough depth etc. Folks we won 10 we played and beat 6 teams that LSU played and beat and yes they scored more points in most of them…we need an edge, a sign, a talisman of some sort to give us a boost to overcome these tough odds cause folks LSU is for real. No smoke and mirrors no gimmick offense as stout a defense that doesn’t play on Sundays…what we need now that Larry, God rest his soul can’t worry us up a win…we need Will Mushchamp to guarantee a LSU victory.. this should be a heck of a game win or lose this UGA team has shown guts and the will to win I’m just damn proud of them and their coaches..and it is GREAT to be a Georgia Bulldog !!

Time for Mark Wretch and cronies to go! That was an abysmal embarrassment. The Dawg defenders played their hearts out. The punt return team players should be left behind in Atlanta. They are all flat out awful! Whoever considers Aaron Murray an SEC quality QB is delusional. His giveaways against major foes in critical games have become legendary. What a pathetic effort after the pick which resulted in an LSU TD! Wretch is a loser. The Dawgs will be losers as long as Wretch and Mike Dodo are at the helm! Put the defensive guy in charge. At least he cares if the team wins or loses. Send everyone else packing! Dawg fans deserve far better than this season after season. The Dawgs will always defeat technical institutes under Wretch but choke against decent opponents. Is anyone as sick of this as I am? To heck with this bull!
