UGA’s turnaround year began with a nudge from AD McGarity

Greg McGarity: Sounding the right tone at the right time. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

A different athletic director might have done too much, or too little. Greg McGarity got it right. He met with Mark Richt at the beginning of the first workweek of 2011 and, rather than make demands, McGarity asked a question.

“It was not adversarial or confrontational,” said McGarity of the meeting. “It was heart-to-heart. I asked him, ‘What do you need to get the job done?’ ”

When McGarity gets around to writing his book on management, that deft twist surely will be Chapter 1 — how to make a salient point without pounding the table. By asking Richt what he required, McGarity assured his coach that he and his input were indeed valued, but sent the message that more was expected.

Sure enough, more has arrived. Richt has presided over 10 consecutive victories and an SEC East championship, and this Saturday his Bulldogs will play for their first SEC title since 2005. Credit the coaches and the players, and credit the AD as well. McGarity supported Richt publicly at a time when administrative waffling could have undermined the program, but in-house he delivered a push so gentle as to seem the merest nudge.

A Bulldog born and bred, McGarity apprenticed in Georgia’s athletic department under Dan Magill and Vince Dooley, but it was in his time away that he grasped the ways and means of a cutting-edge athletic department. “It really hit home at Florida,” said McGarity, who worked as Jeremy Foley’s Gator aide-de-camp for nearly two decades. “Jeremy’s attitude toward all his teams is that being mediocre is unacceptable.”

When McGarity was appointed Georgia’s AD in August 2010, some wondered how this famously nice guy would handle Richt, who’s himself a nice guy but whose record had begun to slip. On cue, Georgia went 6-7 in McGarity’s first season back in Athens,  the final indignity being delivered on New Year’s Eve in a dreary Liberty Bowl loss to Central Florida.

Said McGarity: “That was not a very good day. That was not a very good night. I don’t think anybody around the program slept very well. But we used it as a positive. We said we weren’t ever going to go back to that. That wasn’t Georgia football.”

The Liberty Bowl was on a Saturday. By the time McGarity and Richt met, rumors were flying that the AD had seen enough and was prepared to fire his coach. Said McGarity: “That was not even on the radar. It would not have been fair. I’d just started the Monday of the first game of the season. It wouldn’t have been fair to him or the institution or the players.”

Over those four months on the job, McGarity said, he chose “to sit back and look and listen and learn. There would be a right time for a discussion with Mark, but it’s hard to do that during the season because you’re always focusing on the next game.”

When Georgia’s first losing season under Richt was done, McGarity shared his thoughts but let Richt talk, too. “Being accessible is so important, and it goes both ways,” McGarity said. “Me to him and him to me.”

McGarity’s key observation: Richt needed to free himself of all administrative work that could be delegated. “Mark has talked about ’studying the game,’ ” McGarity said. “I call it ‘coaching ball.’ I wanted him to get back to what made him successful, to being a creative offensive mind. And you see him back in the meeting rooms [where game plans are concocted].”

As part of his “studies,” Richt visited Falcons coach Mike Smith in Flowery Branch, and Smith suggested a book — “The Energy Bus,” by Jon Gordon. “On the bus” became Richt’s rallying cry for 2011, and two of those soon ushered off were Washaun Ealey and Caleb King, Georgia’s leading holdover rushers. Perhaps not coincidentally, a summer passed without a player arrest.

For all that, the season began with Georgia losing to Boise State and South Carolina. Here again McGarity served his coach well, offering support and counseling patience. But did he really foresee such a complete reversal after 0-2?

“I thought it was probably 50-50. It wasn’t to the point that people were jumping off the ship. Inside the building it was, ‘We can only control this week.’ ”

The AD’s verdict on this season: “What has happened since the first two games has been very satisfying. It’s what we all hoped would happen.”

Does “very satisfying” mean Greg McGarity is satisfied? Not quite. “I hope to have a Dream Team every year,” he said. “That’s what the best teams do. We’ve got to back that up with another great recruiting year.”

Another nudge, deftly delivered.

Things are going well in Athens. Even if we lose to LSU (which would be far from surprising) and lose a bowl game (which I do not think will happen unless sugar falls from the sky), UGA is on the right track for next year. Add one good RB and a couple of top-tier OL and we should be stout next year.

Honestly, with all the nonsense and disturbing things going on in college athletics right now, we should be ecstatic to have both a coach like Richt and an intelligent, common sense guy like McGarity leading things. This truly feels like the early days of Richt’s tenure. Hopefully, much more to come!

So if Georgia beats LSU, seems like only one team is fit to be crowned SEC champ and it’s not the one from Athens. You gotta look to the head to head SEC results, which means South Carolina is your champ, right? They will be the only SEC team with a win over the Doggies, if the AJC cheerleaders can will the local boys to a win over the mean kids from Baton Rouge. If the Doggies beat LSU and Richt is handed the SEC trophy, it will be the biggest travesty since poor Washy Ealey was forced to take a pay cut.

McGarity is quite a change from Evans, who was Adams’ puppet. McGarity won’t dance for Adams, andt at this point, Adams will not badger him. Remember, Adams would have not part of McGarity earlier. I’m proud of Coach Richt and his entire staff, proud of the players, especially the seniors for being able to stay on the “bus” and have an impressive season. I don’t care what anyone says about strength of schedule, 10 straight wins including is impressive and even more gratifying with wins over UT, UF, AU and GT in one season.
It’s good to be a GA Bulldog!

If the Dogs can establish a running game and the OL can control the line of scrimmage and pass block, special teams play well and the team plays relative penalty and mistake free ball, then I like their chances against LSU. These guys are extremely focused and know what’s at stake.

UGA may have had a fairly weak schedule and we may be totally exposed against LSU (which has happened to every team they faced other than Bama), but you cannot deny that but for 3 Murray TOs and falling asleep at the switch against a fake punt, we dominated USC and we were in the game against BSU until Ogletree got hurt and was replaced by a true-damn-freshman.

We may not be as good as 10 wins in a row, but we are a young team in the second year of a new defense and we are much, much better than the team that played Boise in the dome. I’m not predicting a win against LSU, but UGA is not simply a product of the schedule.

I’m not really sure why you Dawgs keep saying UGA ‘dominated’ SC. When it comes down to it, UGA only had 41 more yards than SC and there was only a 2 minute differential in time of possession. UGA didn’t give the game away, SC simply took it by executing better when it counted in UGA’s backyard. What UGA did to GT and what SC did to Clemson this past week was domination. Either way, congrats to the Dawgs for doing what they had to do to get to the Dome this year. Good luck against LSU this weekend.

Bama Mike,
Balaama definitely has a good team but it looks like rough waters may be ahead for the tide. Rumors that Saban will go to Texas or even to the (NFL) Jaguars will set you program back a bit. And even if he doesn’t leave the promise of the NCAA to ‘tighten up’ on oversigning will hurt a little. It’s rumored that Kirby Smart might be taking a head coach job, but some say that will not effect your program. What do U think?

I am tired of hearing about UGA’s soft schedule. It wasn’t soft before the year started. Most haters were predicting losses to Tenn, Florida, Miss St., Auburn, and Ga. Tech. When that didn’t happen, it was because of the soft schedule. It’s time to recognize what UGA has accomplished. Only 2 other shools boast a current 10 game winning streak. I wonder what excuse the haters will have should the dogs upset LSU.

Silly Bloggers

November 30th, 2011
3:51 pm

I really thought that if UGA beat up the competition, weaker as it may be this year, the trolls would go away. I was mistaken. I take a strange amount of joy from hearing from six-win Buckeye fans whose program just got taken to the toilet and risked everything to beat Arkansas last year so they could be 1 – 9 against the SEC. While Urban may be the answer, I’m not so sure without Mullin and Strong in the mix to make him look good. Ohio State is notorious for playing Western Ohio, Eastern Ohio, Youngstown State, Northern Ohio, etc. before even getting ot a FBS school in November. While UGA was young and inexperienced, we go up against Boise State and South Carolina. Not to mention that the penalties for that school may not yet be over. I swear every week there are three more Buckeyes suspended.

Then there is GTBob…my favorite all-time blogger. Simply the saddest individual I have ever encountered over the Internet. His team just got waxed by UGA without a running back and lost to us for the 10th time the last 11 years. And they are on probation.

I get UF fans talking smack. They have owned us for the last two decades and one game does not change that. They have been brutalized by injuries, dealing with new coaches and offensive gameplans. UF fans, talk your smack, you have earned it. GTBob and Buckeye, your jealousy, envy, and overall desire to take the good feelings away from a program that just had a two-year roller coaster is sad and juvenile. Try to throw some props our way for a change. Even if we beat LSU, I am sure there will be an explanation from both of you.

Perhaps a turnaround this year, albeit aided by by the weakest schedule in the SEC if not of any major conference. But will it last? Next year Richt will be reintroduced to Saban and the next he gets to play Bama and LSU both. We’ll see about the “turnaround”. McGarity best not get too carried away and bet the farm on a new, rejuvinated Richt. Extend him only two years and wait to see if the “turnaround” is for real. This is a BS article not worthy of publication as is most of Bradley’s work. I don’t know how you have kept your job all of these years. Didn’t like you then, don’t like you now.

First of all, Caleb King couldn’t make the grades. He wasn’t run off. Although I agree that Ealey was.
Next, UGA sports programs have been universally good accross the board. They may have slipped a bit under Evans but you cannot tell me that the Gym Dogs and the tennis teams weren’t first rate, having won national championships annually. Others were world class too. Frankly, Florida universally sucked until about the last decade or so.

While McGarity may have provided a supportive environment, it was the players on the field that provided the W’s. UGA had a couple of bad recruiting years and had gotten some rotten apples that were weeded out of the program with successful recruiting, which became a priority. I don’t know how you can make such a leap as your story line of “McGarity makes the difference”.

According to Rivals.com, Richt has signed a total of 11 five star athletes in 11 years. Compare that to Southern Cal-37, Florida-26, Florida State-21, LSU-20, Tennessee-18, and Alabama-14. Of the major players in the SEC, only Auburn-9, has signed fewer 5 star athletes than UGA. One year Southern Cal signed 8, only three less that what it took Richt eleven years to accomplish. That must change if UGA is to ever become one of the elite.

McGarity is probably the best fit for the AD job at UGA there could be. Philosophically and temperamentally he meshes with CMR. And since the football program is the cash cow of college athletics that is doubly important. Great hire.

Also I am getting sick of the talk of a soft schedule. No one could have foreseen that Miss St, UF, and Auburn would fall off so much. The only one of those ( if they had just maintained last year’s levels ) the Dawgs would have had trouble with would have been Auburn. It wasn’t setup intentionally. No one in the conference can claim that they don’t schedule a couple of cream puffs. Yes, LSU played a killer schedule and hats off to them. But UGA had their toughest opponent first and the team hadn’t gelled yet. They were still feeling their way into the right mentality. And no that isn’t a “coaching” issue. The players had walk onto the bus of their own free will. CMR mentioned the change in the players’ attitude towards being “coachable”. Once they chose to be coachable they began to get better. The paradigm shift wasn’t schematic it was mental.

Mark, good article but keep in mind Caleb King wasn’t driven off the team. He lost his academic eligibility. Ealey basically opted to walk away rather than be coachable. That toxic attitude had to go. By all accounts King was working his butt off but he couldn’t overcome bad study habits in time. That isn’t something that can be changed overnight. He was dismissed for missing academic appointments either. He just didn’t catch up fast enough.

You Georgia fans are a fickle bunch. First of all, you’d be crazy to run Mark Richt out of Athens. He’s a great, great guy who has run a stable program for many years. No, he’s not perfect but he’s a great, great guy who is a solid football coach who represents your university with class. Not many coaches do that anymore in major college football. I really hope you beat LSU although I realize who challenging the game will be for you. However, that’s why they play the game….
If you lose, please don’t jump back on that fire Mark Richt bandwagon!
Second, you need to keep things in perspective…you won the SEC East during another down year for some of the other major programs. This is how you won in the earlier part of this millennium. I say this because you need to prepare yourselves for your big game this weekend. Win or lose, you should continue to support Mark Richt and he just might have a magical run one of these years and bring you what you’re all longing for….a national championship.
My humble two cents…

i would like to say something for Evans. i liked a lot of his ideas and the courage that he had to implement them. it is too bad that a mind like his has been almost wasted by his immaturity that did not compliment his important position. i, too, wasted a very good opportunity through such immaturity, and i never recovered to have a successful professional life. we should follow this young man’s career to see if someone recognizes his talent and gives him another chance to excel. Ken Malcolm fumbled the ball the other day, but when given another chance he ran the ball down tecch’s throat to kill the clock. let’s watch for better news of Evan’s success. i bet he has it in him.

The truth of the matter is that Georgia is riding a 10 game winning streak because they did not have to play any of the SEC’s three best teams in the regular season. The first half may be competitive on Saturday, but LSU will pull away in the second half and win easily. With that being said, Georgia will be loaded with a lot of confident, experienced players in 2012 that will give them a chance to return to the level they were at when they demolished Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl to close out the 2007 season.

“I think McGarity is astute enough to realize that the softness of the schedule also has played a big part in the “turnaround” this year. When LSU destroys UGA on Saturday the reality of it will hit home.”

You know I’m so sick and tired of people talking about the weakness of our schedule after Boise and SC. Look we play in the SEC there’s no such thing as a “weak” schedule.

VT has beaten 0 ranked opponents and they play in the ACC. The ONLY ranked oponent they played was Clemson who proved not to be all that hot either.

Stanford has beaten 0 ranked opponents and guess what like VT played only one ranked team (Oregon) who beat them as well.

UF in 2008 had a loss to Ole Miss and until they played Bama in the SEC Championship game.
Until then they played three teams with 9 wins Ole Miss, FSU and UGA and went 2-1. Otherwise they had a very mediorce schedule. My point is this No one knows for sure how good UGA is or isn’t until this weekend. It’s all subjective. Really if you didn’t know the following was UF’s 2008 schedule before the SEC championship game you probably wouldn’t be all that impressed with this team, much less think they’d have a chance to be national champs.

UF 2008 reg season schedule with opponents record
Hawaii 7-7
Miami 7-6
Tenn 5-7
Ole Miss 9-4
Arkansas 5-7
LSU 8-5
Kentucky 7-6
UGA 10-3
Vandy 7-6
SC 7-6
Citadel (does their record even matter?)
FSU 9-4

If UGA gets blown out on Sat then you can say we’re an ok team, if we lose a close game you can say we’re a pretty good team, if we win then people must say we’re a d*mn good team. Regardless of schedule it’s not easy to win 11 in a row.

Mark, When you talk about Greg’s reaction after the debacle at the Liberty bowl, keep in mind he had seen a night at UGa that just as bad if not worse. Greg was a “young’ man at UGa (as I was) when we lost to Miami of OHIO in the Tangerine Bowl. That was back when spring practice was 20 days in pads. As a mgr on football team, I promise I turned on the lights for practice at least half of those days practice went SO longggg. Ask any player who went through THAT spring, and he will tell you he EARNED his FOUR year scholarship in that spring alone. Greg handled this time as Coach Eaves did then—No panic and supported a man/coach he believes in. Selah.

Admitedly, our schedule has not been fantastic this year, but the teams that we, Alabama, and LSU have each played ended up with similar scores. We’re getting better, and if we can get the running game in shape, we’ll be MUCH better! However, like it or not, we gotta consider the “thug” factor in recruiting. We need more Murrays, Olgetrees, etc. and less vampires! There are kids out there that are good kids AND good football players, and we can get them. All kids make mistakes, but lets TRY to stay away from those whose heart/character are known to be suspect from the get-go. Kudos to McGarity for getting this started!

Perhaps the most important Richt-McGarity meeting occured just after McGarity arrived. In that meeting CMR asked for more resources re. strength & conditioning, a request Damon Evans had repeatedly denied.

One of the main reasons Richt was never on the hot seat with McGarity was this very situation. McGarity saw the vast difference between our S&C program and others and realized we were forcing CMR to “take a knife to a gun fight”. Our schedule was set years in advance and, besides swapping Boise State for Louisville, could not be changed. What could be changed was conditioning and this was addressed immediately.

It is no small coincidence that Mark Richt became a good coach again, huh?

GTBob, I enjoy your posts but carping about our schedule when you were on it (and lost again) is kind of self deprecating.

I actually think the Tech game is a good barometer for us because of the complexity of CPJ’s offense. We not only increased our margin of victory this year, we dramatically decreased the number of yards allowed and basically split time of possession 50-50.

I dont really buy the “illegal block” argument; today’s referees are smart enough to catch that. I do believe our improvement at playing the 3-4 and being better conditioned was a big key. All of that will be tested in a big way against LSU but it is a challenge I am excited about.

Kind of like that same class that UF thought they were in when Alabama rolled into the swamp and put a hurting on the world beating(insert sarcasm) 4-0 #12 Gators. UF in the top 12 shows how much BS the AP and these ranking are. UF had no business after last seasons record of being in the top 20 after 4 games against FIU. And I agree that UGA being ranked preseason was BS too. They ranked both of them so they could hype the game just like Auburn being in the top 25 for last weeks game vs Bama even after UGA dismantled them:)

“Answer the question!!! How many teams currently ranked in the top 25 has Georgia beat???? Are you Dawgs ashamed to answer??”

Not ashamed to take our share of credit for dropping some of our opponents out of the rankings. We beat them, that is what we are supposed to do. When we were down due to injury, lack of proper conditioning (or for any reason) and we played one of the nation’s toughest schedules, it got us nothing. Nor was our situation the fault of our opponents.

One thing you fail to grasp is that it is not our responsivbility to help our opponents succeed. That is their responsibility.

Say What??

November 30th, 2011
5:19 pm

I agree that the schedule was a big reason why we won 10 straight. And yes, all of the SEC East is down this year. But come on! You have got to see how UGA has turned the ship around. We got beat by Kentucky last year. KENTUCKY! If we did not improve, we would have gotten beaten by them, Vandy, a struggling Florida team, and more than likely Auburn this year.

All season long, before every game, all of the UGA haters came on here and told us why we were gonna lose – and you were right for the first two games. But every game after that, you guys said the same thing! And you were wrong. So now everyone is saying that it was only our schedule. But that was not your argument before the games. So that means it is now your excuse after the games. If all of you haters had spent your time before the games saying “Of course UGA is gonna win! Your schedule is totally weak!!”, then I would have to nod my head and say “yep, you’re right.” BUT YOU DIDN”T! Everyone of you said that we were going to lose EVERY GAME… EVERY ONE! Now that you were proved wrong, you have changed your story. So as far as I am concerned, you have no credibility at all.

So here is your chance to get it back (I know…as if you care…). I agree that for UGA to win this Saturday, we will have to play a perfect game. I don’t think that it very likely. But I do think that we will play them a hell of a lot closer than everyone thinks. So here is the gauntlet: will you agree that UGA is better than you thought if we play LSU close? And by close, I mean within a touchdown. If we get “blownout” like everyone says we will, I will be back on this board and admit that my team was not as good as I thought they were. But will you be back and admit that UGA is better than you thought? Or will you be back on here and provide the excuses for why LSA didn’t hang 50+ points on the Dawgs and “blow us out”?

Elliott, LSU has an incredibly talented team; no one disputes that. We just believe we are pretty good too. If you have watched this team closely from year to year, the improvement and promise is obvious.

I’ll say this for LSU: Arkansas did not play all that bad last week but could not keep up. The game did not look like a blow out but the score sure did. Few teams can methodically do what LSU did. It was an impressive perfomance and the kind they are capable of each week. You can “what if” anything to death. We need to play the game first. It will be a good indication of where we are. Since we are playing so many freshmen and sophomores, we have more than just of a “couple of years” to be scary good but it is our repsonsibility to perform. Everyone connected to the program has take this to heart. Stick around, it is gonna be a blast!

ARdawg – LSU scores a TD late, and Miles goes for 2 to get it within a TD. Attempt failed. Onside kick fails, Georgia runs out the clock. 29-20. Seriously, we need to consult with 48dawg, or Dawg48 or whovever; he predicted the opening play of the Tech-Georgia game correctly.

UGA was showing definite signs of not being prepared for games and not being well coached. Sometimes it’s good to be on the hot seat. The team looks a lot different. No one wants to change a coach out in the SEC. Look what’s resulted at Tennessee and Florida. So while Richt may have deserved to be canned, McGarity’s patience seems to be the right call. That great recruiting class didn’t hurt.

As former Falcon coach Jim Mora used to say “we’re playing with house money!” UGA has everything to gain and nothing to lose. The pressure is all on LSU. Now, having said that it will still be a tough one to win but is a very real possibility especially getting our running backs back. LSU will be thinking about the NC and Alabama or OK St so beware of the junkyard dog foaming at the mouth to take you down!

The complete audacity of some of these UGA fans never ceases to amaze the logical thinking football fan. Yes, UGA has a slight chance to win, very slight on Saturday against LSU. But to think they are going to score many points against LSU is what captures the most difficult situation to swallow without laughter.

The fact that some yahoo with a UGA blog wants to post some stats indicating that UGA has played better in certain areas is absolutely ridiculous. Comparing games against common opponents who LSU blows out early, substitutes early and often with a UGA team that kept starters in the entire game with a close game. That is what is so off the chart.

Georgia fans are so embarrassing and everyone in the league is tired of the damn barking as much as they are those cowbells in Starkville. Drunk, Obnoxious and Ignorant is no way to go through life and the SEC.

LSU beats up a weak UGA team and do not be surprised when UGA is foreced to go to their backup QB to finish the game. Murray scrambling options will be limited and if he does the above statement will apply.

To post a link to a UGA website indicating that UGA has played just as good as LSU against common opponents is laughable. While LSU is blowing out opponents and substituting freely throughout the game, UGA is playing first units until the final whistle during close contests.

UGA needs to hope Murray does not try to scramble as he normally does or you will be seeing Mason directing the offense the next drive.

But his best move of the season might have been when while at Florida they let Urban Meyer put their program in limbo but taking off the summer! C’mon now I will give credit where credit is due, but we beat 10 tomato cans in a row…look at the cumulative records…now if we beat LSU…then give credit where it is due and watch McGarity and Richt walk hand in hand across Lake Harrick!

SC would NOT like a rematch with us right now either. The voters and the polls say UGA is BEHIND

LSU
ALABAMA
ARKANSAS
SOUTH CAROLINA

and after the big loss to LSU you will see UGA drop even more than the one spot they dropped last week.

The pollsters, computers all have UGA as very weak.

As for the truthful comment about many( I will not say as all and group them all together as every fan base has their share of moronic fans) it is very true, the common comments from every opponent fans about UGA is the fans just bark and ruff while being intoxicated and believing they are some kind of gift to the SEC while winning their last national title 30 years ago.

UGA has a nice team, but could not beat Arkansas who really had zero defense last year at home in Athens, but this year have a better defense and as the voters, computers and experts all believe would beat a UGA team. Those are the facts, just live it.

Yeah… I watched the games – even the one’s only on the web. Some folks on this blog don’t seem to remember certain parts of those games. I’m happy to get a 10 game winning streak no matter what. It’s the first one that I’ve ever seen at UGA, but I don’t consider it such a big “turnaround” so much as a mere statistical anomaly. We played 10 games in a row that we should have won. Now, I’ll admit that we didn’t even do that much last year. Still, how often do you wind up with 10 games in a row that you are expected to win easily? Even Florida was a cakewalk this year. Who knew?

We’ve still had disciplinary problems (though not as many) and that is, in my opinion, the most acute problem that needed to be addressed by Richt and McGarity. I don’t understand fans pretending that Georgia is an even match for this LSU team. I hope we win, but if we do it will be a HUGE upset.

We have some very good players. LSU has a great team.

Mark, you can’t be serious? Look at this schedule for UGA football. Boise St. thrashes the Dawgs in their own backyard, S.C. wins, but goes on to have a horrible season. Coastal Carolina..no explantation needed. Mississippi St. you’re suppose to win there.. UT is the worst team in the SEC, Vanderbilt? Had to fight to win against them. Suppose to be a win-win every season. Florida is having a down season, suppose to win there. New Mexico St?? Auburn will be like that for the next few seasons. So will Florida. Kentucky, had to fight to win that one, suppose to win every season and Ga. Tech was just too small. So my point is here, Georgia did what they were suppose to do this season. They were not gonna beat Boise St, S.C. was ready, UGA didn’t want it more. You can’t say the A.D. is reason for the football team turning it around. He doesn’t do anything but sit in an office and pretty much make threats. This argument you’re making here isn’t valid. Weather McGarity was here or Evans or anybody else, this football season would have still went this way.

I do think it is unfair to classify King as an energy vampire. His career certainly didn’t turn out to be what we hoped for but I don’t blame King and his attitude was not the reason he was dismissed. He was academically ineligible and we all know that he struggled in that area since before he enrolled at UGA. I would actually credit the University for not allowing him to continue. We get a lot of flack for the Jan Kemp affair which began nearly 30 years ago but the bottom line is we started doing things the right way in the classroom. Things that Auburn with its rouge sociology program and Tennessee with it’s Bensyl-Meyers situation have still been dealing with in this past decade. King gets a lot of flack for his problems but as I recall his only indiscretions were driving a scooter the wrong way down a short one way road on campus and going 70 mph on hwy 78 through Monroe. It’s not like he pulled out an AK-47 and fired rounds into the air. Ealey certainly had attitude problems going back to high school and was summarily dismissed but King’s dismissal was purely academic. I wish him the best in the future and would like to thank him for helping to beat Tech and salvage the ‘09 season which is more than most of us around here have ever done for the R&B.

I do think this game is closer than the Arkansas game though, only real worry is the usual suspects for UGA (Crowell’s injuries, Bean Anderson below average pass blocking, Bobo’s lack of creativity at times, and poor special teams play) If these problems can be managed the game should be competitive and some way UGA must win the turnover battle.

To the naysayers and haters on any blog concerning the state of UGA football, unless you’re a Boise State fan or a SC fan then shut up. If UGA has played you then you have lost. If UGA has not played you, then you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

Boise State fans can boast because they beat a team that was clearly not ready to play on the big stage with all of the buildup and hype. SC won a game that even the Ole’ Ballsak said they were lucky to get out of with a win. UGA gave that game away with turnovers and dumb mistakes and it was a game that the Dogs should have one.

I feel very confident that the outcome of BState/UGA would be decidedly different now and I know if we played SC now that UGA would beat them down with Garcia, Lattimore, Shaw, any combination that you want to throw in the mix.

To LSU fans, lets talk again on Sunday. Your team still has to show up and play. On any given day….that’s why the game is played. Despite your perceptions of the state of UGA footaball and past games or seasons, this team will be focused and prepared to steal the hype if. If, perhaps they do pull off the “unimaginable’ feat of beating your team and LSU does proceed and win the NC with a one loss record.

You will always remember that UGA spoiled your unbeaten season and will be the team that you lost to, the true National Champions.

There has got to be some kind of consideration after beating a team with the momentum that this team has carried throughout this season, with their stats and strength of schedule, especially if they beat the #2 team in the country a 2nd time. Perception is everything, ask Paul Johnson.

SSIgator, you are correct. UGA had a soft schedule. Maybe had your mighty Gators been worth a crap this year our schedule would not have been so soft. My gosh, you had a 14-0 lead against our tiny pups and you couldn’t hold that. Mabye one day you will learn that no matter how hard you try you can’t build yourself (or your team) up by tearing another one down. UGA may get their butts handed to them Saturday. If they do, then they do but I can guarantee you I can think of about 500 football players from the other Eastern Division schools that would love to have the opportunity to play LSU. The Gamecocks got their butts handed to them last year by Auburn but I bet every other player and coach in the SEC east would have loved to at least had the opportunity to play in the title game. It is much like winning the lottery……..you can’t win it if you don’t buy a ticket. You can’t win the SEC if you are not at least one of the 2 teams playing in the Dome. UGA may lose and it could be bad however THEY, not your Gators at least are playing on the first weekend in December. Seems to me that someone that lost to such a weak team would at least hope the Dawgs make a good showing because you LOST to that team with such a sorry schedule.

I’m not really trying to be that hard on McGarity but believe me, Georgia Football is bigger than any AA admin.

I believe in Richt and knew he could turn it around. This is the best era in Georgia Football, period, point blank. I’m not sold on Grantham, the guy acts like a douche too much but he has gotten the defense whipped into shape. Man, I wish we could have landed Foster.

Anyhow, to all these LSlers out there, we should have played in the ‘07 game and I hope we embarrass your crazy, grass-eating coach on Saturday.

LSWho is an afterthought team, it’s time to put them in their place. I don’t even respect this crap program, they were nothing before 2003 and I really don’t like them now.

Not yet sold on this “turnaround”! Who has UGA beaten? Win this game or next year in Tuscaloosa and then maybe so. I still believe that Richt will never play in a BCS Championship game. Saban(Ala)and Meyer(Ohio St) are a couple cuts above Richt and their teams will be there time and again before Richt ever gets there once.

reality– It’s luck, basically. There really is no Championship in college FBS, it’s basically a popularity contest. Every SEC homer used to talk about how the SECCG was a semi-final for the “championship” game now it people are saying even in Georgia wins, it’s still LSWho and Bama. What a joke.
Georgia just hasn’t gotten the breaks.

Only thing Georgia can hope for is the piss-slap LSU out of contention by embarrassing them.

Georgia would kill Bama since we actually have a QB who can throw.

One quick question. Since when has doing nothing been considered being a leader? A leader would pledge support for Richt or man up and say he was on the hot seat. McGarity is a weak excuse for an AD. Also, thanks for canceling every meaningful out of conference game, and replacing them with D2 schools.

Georgia’s defense was ranked 5th in the nation this year…….with a very good offense.

Florida’s defense was ranked 10th in the nation this year…….with no offense whatsoever.

Mushamp and Weis will get the players they need in the pro style offense…..and then watch what happens………….sort of like Saban and Bama in his first year (6-6 and lost to La-Monroe)…and then went on to where they are now. I would expect Florida will take the same pathway…..

As a life long Dawg I’m still skeptical about Mike Bobo. I’m still of the opinion that Coach Bobo should be relagated to coaching the QB’s and recruiting. IMHO I think we need to get a proven, dynamic OC in house and let him work. Bobo is an excellent QB coach and an exceptional recruiter but I still think we are somewhat being short changed as long as he’s the OC. He has flashes of brilliance an then throws up a brick. Time has seemingly proven CMR made a good hire in Todd Grantham as DC so perhaps a new, proven OC could get us over the hump and make the team complete. I think it something that ought to be at least looked at.

It’s encouraging to see the right buttons being pushed by the UGA Athletic brain trust. McGarity is the straw that stirs the drink. He seems to know what he’s doing (i.e. he built a big enough fire under CMR’s keester to get his attention).

McGarity certainly learned the right way to manage an athletic department during his time under Foley at UF. So kudos to the person/committee responsible for hiring him.

Regardless to what happens Saturday night at the Georgia Dome, the UGA football family should be proud of the 2011 season. Ten wins in a row is impressive, regardless to the quality of the schedule.

Having said that, lets see if 2011 was a sign of things to come or a product of a weak schedule.

The Dawgs still have not beaten a top-ranked team since 2007. The cream of the SEC East came back to UGA this year. UGA didn’t rise to their level.

The proof of the program’s redemption will come with quality performances in 2012 and 2013 and 2014. I doubt UF and Tennessee will tolerate their current mediocrity. Lets see where the Dawgs find themselves on December 1 the next three years.

They don’t have to be playing for an SEC championship, but they gotta start winning some of the games against the conference big boys again.

Let’s face it, the Dawgs don’t live up to their recruiting. They had “the” schedule this year. With the high school players in Georgia, there is no reason to not win 10 games every year. When we have the good schedule is when we should win 12.

Good article Mark. McGarity seems like the man to get the job done, and I am sure he will be generous with the extension of the HC and DC contracts at the conclusion of the season. I think it might help recruiting a little more, if he could release a public statement via press conference on his intention to keep the staff in tact. This would be a nice way of insuring the kids, who want to come, but only if CMR is going to be here next year.

CMR says competition of the Dream Team really was a great force to help motivate his UGA team. However people like me were used to motivate CMR with Chris Peterson breathing down his neck. Rumors that Peterson and McGarity were to have a secret meeting during the Boise week were everywhere in Athens. I was even told that Chris Peterson’s wife was checking into Athens Academy….. I said this all summer on this and other AJC blogs and I was scolded often and people said horrible things about me. I was only stating what everyone “in the know” was talking about. My point is that McGarity’s strategy worked!!! Competition is a great motivator… and I was used as a motivational tool if you will…..

It’s amazing that an entire season has been played and we still do not know if this is a Good Dawg Team!
In a couple of days we’ll find out for sure though.

The Dawgs are juiced and ready. There should be absolutely no excuse for poor execution or lack of intensity. If we get blown off the field and lose by more than 10 points then the 10 wins and The SEC East Champ Title mean nothing.

I have this feeling about the DAWGS in this game!! They are hungry for this game! I believe they will come to play and leave it all on the field. I recall in Athens a few years ago when the superior LSU team visited and UGA had the game in hand until the last play of the game when the LSU tailback slipped thru the left side of the line and took it to the house. Remember too, when South Caroline came to Athens this year and the DAWGS actually controlled the game and had them beat then Cordy Glen failed to even touch Javedon Clowney as he simply walked thru the line next to center and shook Murray like a rag doll, the ball came loose, was picked up a a walk to the end zone. That was the game and the difference in their ranking right now at #14. Otherwise, I bet they would be in the top 10.

As for Boise State, they simply weren’t ready to play them. Boise State was seasoned with a load of seniors and five year players. UGA was playing with a lot of freshmen but still made a fight out of it. They fought til the bitter end and that’s all you can ask. I honestly believe, the results with Boise State would be different today! Let’s hope that LSU will be in for a surprise! If they expect a pushover with the DAWGS, they may well be in for that surprise!! GO DAWGS!!!!

No, MB – UGA’s “turnaround” began with their very soft schedule that they had after SC. Just look at the conference records of the feeble teams that they beat (and most of those wins were very unimpressive). That soft schedule gave UGA the time it needed to gel – like having 2 months of spring practice. That schedule has to be the softest schedule I’ve seen for a so-called “top 25″ team in my 50+ years of watching college football.

Could it be the coaching?? A team that supposedly is in the top 10 of recruiting in every year (sometimes within the top 5) has to resort to playing “a lot of freshman” – is a pretty bad indicator of how bad the coaches (esp CMR) is at utilizing and developing talent.
As far as the comment about beating BSU now – well – UGA had their shot and blew it. It’s like saying that if LSU played Oregon today – Oregon would have likely won – Oregon was playing a very young team (and without top 2 running backs and star corner) and had 5 turnovers (2 from a true freshman). Still – Oregon out gained LSU (so called lofty defense) 338 to 273 in total yards. So – we could always play that “what-if” – which UGA is a master of.

I just read that Boykin’s academic major at UGA is Magazines – what the he!! type of major is that?? It’s like a third of UGA players are majoring in Housing – and we aren’t talking construction here – but how to manage public housing. WOW – with majors like these – it’s no wonder Tech can’t recruit the same talent (though I’m not a Tech fan – just saying…)

McGarity is a great AD, but there is very little he can do “shift the winds” towards Georgia’s favor over their biggest rival.

Florida is again looking at a top 5 recruiting class, and adding. Georgia is not even in the top 25, per Scout.com: http://florida.scout.com/a.z?s=168&p=9&c=14&yr=2012

bubba4, I’ve had that feeling before only to realize they and the coaching staff didn’t realize the difference between “hunger” and “preparation”. It was clear they weren’t prepared vs Boise and didn’t know how to react when punched.

I still don’t know if the Dawgs are ready for the big stage and all the attention that comes with it. It takes maturity to handle the challenge, maturity comes with experience. Don’t get me wrong, the Dawgs are where I thought they “could and should” be, but I had my doubts due to state of the program, and coaching questions.

McGarity has brought focus to where it needs to be, in an extraordinary way. We used to coin his management style as using “gentle positive pressure”. I don’t think we’ve arrived, but we’re on the way, hopefully.

ckgator,

This is December. We still have 2 more months so don’t start bowing your chest just yet. I know Muschamp and he is scared because he has NO qb or pro-style RB for next fall. Look for Driskell and perhaps the other kid to transfer soon. Also expect Brown to transfer as well. Those 2 little midgets you had last year as RB’s are running out of eligiblity. Please note I did not say graduate as Meyer’s recruits are mostly thugs and high school rejects. Isn’t one of those midgets the one who texted “time to die biaaacch”? I’m sure that looks good on a resume.

Muschamp is a UGA plant and UF will be down for atleast 3 years!! I love it too!! Have fun at the Weedeater Bowl this year!!!

Didn’t you have the best 2 recruiting classes in the nation in 2009 and 2010. Boy has that worked out well for you. Recruiting rankings are meant to get people like you exited.

Here are the names of the individuals that BWI has been told are at the top
of the list to be interviewed.

That list includes: Chris Peterson [Boise State], David Shaw [Stanford],
Tim Murphy [Harvard], Darren Perry, Gary Patterson [TCU], James Franklin
[Vanderbilt], Mike London [Virginia], Pat Fitzgerald [Northwestern] and
possibly Mark Richt [Georgia] and Dan Mullen [Mississippi State].

BWI has been told, Peterson, Shaw, Perry and Murphy have serious interest
in the job and appear to want to be interviewed. At this time it is not
known what Penn State’s interest level is for Richt, Patterson. Franklin,
London and Mullen.

BWI has been told Richt first got in contact with Penn State 10 days to two
weeks ago, but BWI does not know where those talks stand.

Gamecocks win you are forgetting that the record counts first. Only in a tie do they look at head-to head. The Dawgs are 7-1 in SEC match-ups. The Chickens are 6-2. UGA would beat SC quite handily in a rematch now.

DagfaninJackson,

No there is no truth to that. The job is all Mullen’s. It’s not smart to follow a legend like Paterno and Richt can’t recruit Pennsylvania.

If you will read my earlier post CMR can play a similar role with McGarity to push for his extension. All Richt has to do is have is agent leak a rumor that he is interested in the Penn St job. That gets boosters fired up then pushes McGarity into extension talks with the agent. CTG has already used this approach 2 weeks ago. He wants an extension but said some NFL teams are interested. Let me ask you…who in the NFL is worried about hiring D Coordinators for next season? Nobody. It’s just a game. Everyone plays it……it’s actually a VERY dirty business.

To ARdawg – Your response that I must be a Tech fan is way off base – what makes you think I am a tech fan? You – like so many other UGA fans – must have a Napoleon Complex – when it comes to measuring your team – you always refer to tech. No – I am – and always have been – a ALABAMA fan – a team that if you played this year – would have left the game with your tails tucked. But – no – your soft schedule allows you to waltze into to the SEC Champ game – though you couldn’t even beat BSU (who TCU did what YOUR DAWGS COULD NOT DO) or even South Carolina.

for those who said the dawgs are playing soft schedules, look at the attempts to play outside the conference to gain points for bcs standings. home and a away with arizona state, when they were good(stafford played against them) then, home and away with OSU(okla st), now boise. i dont think that is an attempt to play softies. that takes balls. who is florida playing?

OSU new football philosophy…if you cant beat em…hire their coach instead!!

Time for many other teams to sit down and eat some humble pie for awhile! Thats what you get with your cocky attitudes.

And for my fellow dawg fans…either make a commitment to your team..or go shop elsewhere like meyer and saban does!!

ckgator, 2 full months until NSD, pace yourself!

Since you like to talk about Florida in a Georgia article, here is what happened just this week. Not only did Florida’s recruiting coordinator (Pantoni) resign to rejoin Meyer at OSU, 2 more players are transferring. With 11 players gone since Will’s arrival, Florida is now down to 68 players left on scholarship, and 8 more seniors leave after the bowl game.

From cbssports.com
The latest bad news in Gainesville: two more Gators have elected to transfer out of the program, bringing the total number of departures since Muschamp’s hire last December to 11 and reducing the Gator roster for their upcoming bowl game to 68 players–17 fewer than the NCAA maximum of 85.

Here is the link so you can enjoy the entire article:

As for the PSU job, this week I’m in the Philadelphia area. The local news channels this morning were reporting their sources claim that Mullen was the leading candidate for the job. That could have changed an hour later, who knows……..

Greg McGarity is, in a phrase, a complete class act. I have had the pleasure of knowing him as part of the Gator management team. I know he was a complete manager and leader [to call him simply a manager makes him sound like a caretaker - which he was not]. He was part of a team at UF that excelled year in and year out. The SEC demands the best of every single AD in the league. Greg brings to UGA talent, heart, mind and soul. Those are the ingredients for success. I am only sorry I did not get to say ‘Well done, good luck’ when he was tapped for the UGA job [I am in SW Florida and this happened out of the football season]. So instead I commend the Georgia leadership and faithful for bringing home an extremely talented and able leader. We will definitely miss him at Florida but I am gratified that he can ply his trade for the Bulldog Nation. Best of Luck against the Tigers. The are fierce this year.
