"Excuse me, young man, but have you seen my offense?" (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Our Heat Check begins with the hottest team around — the still-unbeaten-heading-into-December Atlanta Hawks! OK, I’m joshing. (Not to be confused with still-a-Hawk-Josh Smith.)
Georgia Bulldogs: Their basketball team lost by two points at Colorado on Monday, which is actually a good sign. Their football team lost by two points at Colorado last season, and look at it now! Ten wins running, an SEC East title, a comprehensive victory over Georgia Tech, no more hot-seat talk about the coach. Heat Index: Warm, with the chance — should the Bulldogs unhorse LSU — of a truly toasty holiday season.
Isaiah Crowell: The heralded freshman didn’t play a down against Tech due to injury, and it mattered not — except maybe to Crowell’s case for being indispensable. He was, as we know, supposed to be the Missing Man. Now Mark Richt is telling running-back recruits that a great opportunity can be found in Athens. Heat Index: “Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., come on down! You’re the next contestant on ‘Who’s the New Herschel?’ ”
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: The Jackets had nine offensive touchdowns in 60 minutes against Kansas; they managed eight offensive touchdowns in the 240 minutes of their four losses. Heat Index: In other news, Kansas just fired its coach.
Atlanta Braves: Frank Wren the GM is doing his speed-dialing exercises this week. Baseball’s winter meetings convene in Dallas on Monday. Heat Index: Red-hot Wren action coming right up!
Alex Gonzalez: The Braves declined to offer him arbitration, which mean Wren is looking for a shortstop. I’m guessing he doesn’t call Toronto to inquire about the availability of Yunel Escobar. Heat Index: Remember when Rafael Furcal spurned the Braves and John Schuerholz threw a presidential fit? He might have to grant a presidential pardon.
Atlanta Hawks: The NBA lockout is over. The Hawks will restart after Christmas. Might the Atlanta Spirit talk you into buying four dozen season tickets to serve as stocking stuffers? Heat Index: See next item.
Jamal Crawford: The Hawks’ fourth-best player is a free agent. He won’t be coming back. But Kirk Hinrich, who arrived at heavy cost in trade, will. Heat Index: Let the record reflect that the Hawks took top-seeded Chicago to six games in the Eastern Conference semis without Hinrich playing a minute.
Atlanta Falcons: They’re 7-4. Given that Houston might have to deploy Dan Pastorini at quarterback Sunday, they’ve got a real shot at being 8-4. Given that the two games after that are against Carolina and Jacksonville, they’ve got a real shot at being 10-4 when they play the Saints on Dec. 26. Heat Index: A month from now, we could be calling this the hottest team going.
Matt Ryan: He didn’t complete a long ball against the Vikings — Julio Jones dropped one and Roddy White stumbled reaching for another — but he did complete just about everything else. And his team did win. Heat Index: The Iceman warmeth.

What do you think is the deal with Crowell? He seems soft and when he’s on the sidelines, he seems disengaged from the rest of the team. Do you think there’s something going on there that we don’t know about? This is starting to look like Caleb King and Washaun Ealey all over again.

Keith Marshall is on the way and he will give Crowell the needed push. The future is indeed torrid at UGA!

He should have his legs fresh and back under him and run for 100 this Saturday.

I still think the biggest problem Crowell has is that he is a true freshman. I understand that Lattimore didn’t have the off the field issues, but even his body couln’t take a full SEC season. If UGA would have had any depth at the tb position Crowell would have been better this year. Hopefully that won’t be as big of a problem going into next year (w/recruiting coming up as we lost 2 tb’s after recruiting season was over) and Crowell is about to get a month off to prepare for a bowl. I think Crowell still has bigtime aspirations and he will get it together eventually unlike King and Ealey.

The Hawks don’t get past Orlando in first round last season without Hinrich, and if Hinrich didn’t get hurt, we STILL wouldn’t know what we had in Jeff Teague because he’d be rotting on the bench.
Crawford is an inefficient scorer and a liability on defense, and like Michael Cunningham said, Hawks would be better off letting him walk and putting the ball in Teague and Hinrich’s hands (both of whom actually seem to care about defense.

I give Richt and the players credit for making changes.
It is more than the wins and losses.
He changed the culture of the program.
If he had not changed, he wouldn’t be our coach today as he would have been on the ever growing list of coaches who just got fired.
Our future is bright and the foundation is set. We could not say that two years ago.
It is difficult in this day and time to make tough changes and come out with your job intact. Ask Muschamp. He probably won’t survive at Florida because he ran off about 20 players. He had to for his discipline to get in place but it cost him dearly in wins.
We have all bashed Richt for the past problems but i give him credit for the changes made.
And Greg McGarity for pushing him

Falcons – I predicted 12-4 or 11-5 before the season. Should happen.
Tech- Made strides. I think CPJ needs to get over the bowl game hump.

Keith Marshall is a burner, but everybody does realize he is at least 15 lbs smaller than Crowell, right?
Regardless, I think Crowell will shine, when healthy, as part of a stable of RBs, 14-16 carrys per game. Maybe Bobo will develop some pass plays for him to add 3 or 4 touches.
Crowell, nor Marshall just ain’t gonna be 25+ carries per game RBs.
But they would make a great rotating tandum.

Since Crowell was about 12 years old, he has heard how great he is from coaches and teammates. I doubt if he heard that from teachers. Richt played right into that with the “missing man” hype. Crowell has some talent, but his success has been against the Coastal Carolinas on the schedule. He lacks the durability of King and Ealey. Right now, Crowell is a liability. If he doesn’t fumble against LSU, he will leave the game early. It will be interesting to see how Crowell reacts to Richt’s flirtation with other prospects.

Dawgs need a couple of bigger, hard-running backs like LSU, which has 3 or 4 of them.
Keith Marshall is a great back and I’m hoping UGA signs him. He’s much more than a small, fast runner. He’s the real deal, a CJ Spiller.
But the Dawgs still need a pounder, a 220-235 lbs. guy who’s tough to bring down. They have one coming in 2013, a big, hard-driver out of Yulee, FL–but they need to sign one for 2012.

I give Richt credit for keeping this team together and the changes he has made with staff ans such.
However, I would rate him as a good coach – but not a great coach.
For that matter – I would rate georgia football team as a good team – but hardly a great team.
This is an improvement to the embarrassment that was georgia football last year – with losses to Colorado and UCF.
So give Richt credit for directing georgia football from being a bad team – to a team slightly above being mediocre. Bottom line, georgia struggled to beat Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and MS State. Throw a come from behind win to a 6-6 Florida team that was wildly celebrated!
Get my point?
georgia is going to get rocked by LSU this Saturday – absolutely rocked.
I will show respect when respect is warranted – sorry georgia football fans – your team is slightly above mediocre – you know it, the media knows it – and LSU knows it.

JB, you think we’ll finally see some two TE sets, for protection, as well as targets for a short-pass offense Saturday?
Charles and White should get 20+ passes thrown to them, with LBs covering. WRs are gonna be covered – LSU has excellent, ball-hawking DBs.

What game would you rather watch, Bama vs. LSU or Oklahoma State vs LSU?
I think most football fans would rather see an OK State–LSU game.
If OK State gets a big win over Oklahoma, I’m looking for OK State to move into the #2 slot, and football fans will get a championship game they’d be excited about seeing.

Joycee,
Football is a big-boy game! Harton is 5-5 1/2 on a good day and HE got smashed by the same 300 lb. folks and went back for more. Our little backs have taken worse hits than Crowell, and yes, they HAVE been on the bottom of the pile some, too! Those of us who played any kind of football, high-school and on, realized quickly in a game who could not take a lick! LSU will chase I.C out so quickly that his ‘dreads will be at the hash-mark when he crosses the sidelines! By the way, if you get under the pads and run downhill, injuries do not happen nearly as often as when one is “tip-toeing” around!!!!!! As previously stated, our passing game better be on, ‘coz the little backs are gonna have to tote it once again………….

Mark, Don’t you agree that we need a play-off system of some sort but not some 16 team tourney. We need something like a 6 team tourney with #1 and #2 getting a pass. There is no way to schedule a long tourney and it’s not fair to the players to force them to play that many more games. Even with a 6 team play-off you are adding 3 more games to the end of a grueling schedule (Not to mention that you have to decide which Bowl games must change their dates). Football isn’t like basketball or baseball. Few players are injured for life in those sports. We have to think about what we are asking for. A four team playoff would be better but look at who would be left out this year.

Mike L.,
You may be right about the stats, but there is more to it than stats. Getting yards at garbage time is different than toughing out when your team needs you! Look at the games and times I.C. got his yards; some (not all) but some are padded stats. If he’ll toughen up and take one for the team, he’ll get the respect. Until then, when we have little backs smaller than 8-man private-school backs taking SEC licks and staying in, I.C will continue to catch a little grief. He has all the God-Given talent in the world…..just no toughness!

I’m sure Murray would be thrilled to have a RB slowed by a bad ankle or kneee standing back there in pass protection. It’s hard enough for a freshman to know the blocking assignments let alone doing it while hampered with an injury from an earlier play. He’s a speed back with decent power that will improve in the weight room as time goes by. Right now, he needs the speed. Without it, bring in fresh legs.

Mark: There seems to be an abundance of BRILLIANT bloggers who still can’t just admit that CMR is a damn good coach. They continue to tell the world how CMR should recruit( As per Roll Tide), coach and every other detail,no matter how small. It isn’t enough that CMR has won 10 straight games, 10 out of 11 against GT, is in the top 10 active coaches in Div. 1A as to win/loss percentage, won the SEC East(This without a real RB in most of the games), doesn’t sign every O lineman in the state of Georgia EVERY year(As per Roll Tide), is constantly reminded that he should try to follow in the footsteps of Saban/Bama, Miles/LSU, Chizik/Auburn and even Petrino/Arkansas although no coach alive except the new Ohio State head coach(who was also included in those of whom CMR should model his program after until Fla started floundering in the POST-TEBOW era). Since these BRILLIANT minds apparently don’t have a job, you could become their agent as you are contemplating changing professions.
Two things to keep in mind if you hope to succeed in your new profession;
1) Roll Tide is by far the most BRILLIANT of CMR critics. According to RT all you have to do to be a winner at UGA is recruit and sign ALL OL in the state(He hasn’t explained how this can be done but I’m certain it is covered in Saban’s Book) I believe Saban and Miles are ranked in the top 20 or at least the Top 50 in win/loss by active coaches so CMR needs to pay attention although none of the above(except new Ohio State headcoach) has a winning record against CMR.
2) Always get CMR to pull those strings to get UGA the softest schedule possible. Ignore those who say that the SEC East is the weakest Division in the history of college football or that Florida and Tennessee dominated the SEC for years.
If I can be of further assistance in these matters please don’t hesitate to call.
I got Roll Tide on speed dial.
Good Kuck in your future endeavors.

Reality Gator: The reality is that your Florida program is fast becoming an absolute joke. You went 6-6 (with wins over UAB, Furman, and Florida International [or was it Fla Atlantic]). You were just manhandled by FSU (who itself isn’t good), and your coach is a whiney a-hole who can do nothing but scream at officials. Sadly, you may not beat UGA again for several years. How you can get on this board and gloat is beyond comprehension. Might be wise to STFU. But, USC are “the really east champions”. Nice logic.

LSU is just too deep. What is impressive is that their corners are so physical. They hold up receivers at line at least for a second which impacts their routes and timing. Couple that with the pressure they receive from their front and you have a very solid defensive scheme. In my opinion Orson Charles must be utilized in order to back the corners off the receivers for underneath help.
I would rather have a healthy Samuel who is also a very good blocker than Crowell who appears soft and still has problem picking up zone blitzes. But hey if Georgia can control the clock anything is possible just get it to the 4th quarter with a 5 point margin. Remember LSU played extremely cautious against Bama in 4th and we just could not take advantage of the opportunity given to us.

I admit that I haven’t read this whole string and someone may have already said this, but you Crowell doubters out there ought to consider this–IC is an 18- or 19-year-old freshman coming out of 2A high school ball who had a month, at best, to step into a contributing role at the highest level of college football. Given these truths, I think he’s done pretty darn good when he has been healthy enough to play. My guess is that IC will benefit immensely from a year of off-season conditioning and will come out much tougher next Fall, and that even if we get Marshall and Gurley, they will have their own first-year problems, just as IC has had this year. Let’s face it–freshman running backs like Herschel Earl Campbell, and Lattimore are not all that common, and to expect that kind of performance out of true freshman borders on the delusional.

Good luck on finding the next Herschel. I’ve been hearing that for the last 30 years and have come to the conclusion there will not be another one. But, we have had some pretty good backs. I would be tickled to get one even close to Knowshon. P.S. There will never be another Larry Munson either.

Bob, Georgia played some of the same teams that LSU, Bama, and Arkansas played, according to their defensive stats, I would say Bama has the best defense, but LSU and Georgia are neck, and neck, with Arkansas worst among those four teams.
This is a list of the same teams all of them played, these are Net yards, so it does not take in account, the yards that the special teams gave up.

MB, I like the caption under the photo. Humorous.
None of us know how much heat McGarity put on Coach Richt, but I am sure it was quite a bit of quiet, behind the scenes, chewing, along with encouraging him with the opportunity to regain his stature at UGA that he once had. McGarity did not come to UGA to get beat by FL, or anyone else every year. I think he came here to help build UGA into the total quality college/university system that it deserves. It was a profoundly great sports oriented University under Vince Dooley. UGA should be on the same level as Alabama and LSU from now on.
As a Christian, my opinion is Coach Richt got caught up in trying to make sure he did everything he could with some of these players, to help them become better adults, that last year, they completely took advantage of his kindness and ran over him, and totally embarrassed him, and in the process, they and he hurt his individual persona and public image, in the eyes of all people. There has been a lot of anti-Christian bias on these posts this year, and I think that part of the disgruntled passion for UGA, was over done. He has shown this year the kind of coach that he really is, a great one. I think he has also built a fire under Bobo. I am not a Bobo fan, but, he has improved as an OC.
I think it was Jarvis Jones that said at the end of the second loss to SC he called a team meeting and said that it was time for the players to stop playing for themselves and to start playing as a team for Coach Richt or he was not going to be here. Jarvis Jones is an exceptional person, and appears to be a great locker room leader, and I am so glad he came back to Georgia to play for UGA.

Mark Bradley, Stop with the next Herschel, there will never be another college RB like Herschel. Its not fair to compare anyone esle to Herschel. It’s pretty common these days to refer to football players as “athletic freaks”, but Herschel Walker was someone who truly deserved the designation. At 6-foot-two, 222 pounds, Walker possessed a devastating combination of pure speed and raw power. Even Ron Dayne, who is ranked #1 all time in rushing yards leader, was not as good as Herschel, the only reason Herschel is not #1, he left after his third year.
Ron Dayne, Wisconsin (1996-99) 6,397, 1599.25 average per year
Herschel Walker, Georgia (1980-82) 5,259, 1,753 average per year

Falcons : Can’t beat the Saints & Packers. So why bother making the playoffs ? No pass rush period. Brees & Rodgers will pick the feathers out of the Falcons db’s…
Braves : Liberty Media’s penny-pinching ways prevent team from getting a much needed shortstop & power hitting left fielder. Will oft-injured Chipper play 10,20,50,100 games ? The not-so great Jason Heyward keeps right field position without earning it.
Hawks : Who really cares about the NBA ? Greedy players. Joe Johnson’s salary has hamstrung the team for 5 years. He gets paid like Kobe & LeBron but plays like Mugsy Bogues…

Interesting info I ran across on ESPN page:
In five seasons when Mark Richt played a quarterback starting for the first time, Georgia went 41-23 (.640), with one 10-win season. That would have been senior D.J. Shockley, who played regularly in previous years behind David Greene, leading the Dawgs to a 10-3 record and the SEC title. In the six seasons in which Richt has had a returning starter at quarterback, the Dawgs are 65-13 (.833) with one SEC title and four SEC East championships.

Your record is not a great representation of what is going on at UGA. Murray is just now what 15-9 as a starter, after 9 wins in a row? Next year when UGA faces tougher competition UGA fans will be back in here rehashing the Richt debate faster than you can say overrated.

Folks…to compare Lattimors’ freshman season to Crowell is a joke………Lattimore won games for SC……he puts his team on his back…..I mean look at what he did against us his freshman year……his knee got blown out and that is the only reason he is not playing………………I wonder…when he does actually plays….when he is going to pull himself out the game cause he is dinged…….Imagine what our runnning game would have been with Lattimore?????????
I think Cromwell is the best back we have…he hits the hole well and has good vision….but…..don’t see Lattimore puffing on fake dope…pulling himself out of the game….
It’s time for Cromwell to make a beliver out of this UGA fan…… he is talented but is he just another thug that will be out of the program in a year?

@Prime Time (red shirt): Wanna estimate the number of “GREAT” coaches in history that DID NOT win the NC? Having the best team will not always get the job done. CMR’s 2007 team should have been named NC but you not only have to have a very good team but you got to have your politics right so why are you babbling around about “can CMR win a NC?” Why not just ask “Will any receiver who drops more than 5% of passes to him be named an All American”?
Your mind is at a middle school level(No offense to middle schoolers)

Amazing video of a high school senior from Columbia TN who kicks the ball dead straight 75-80 yards in the air. He was successful on 54 of 54 attempts this season….100%. Now he needs a college team. Wants to go to Georgia Tech!
Watch for yourself…it is unreal!

If the O line can open some holes and Crowell develops a thicker freshman skin he will bring an added dimension to an already prolific UGA offense. Without him we still have a realistic shot at knocking these Mike The Tigers off.
Wouldn’t Dawg Nation LOVE to be the only 1 in the LSU Loss Column at seasonend!?
Remember you are The University of Georiga Bulldogs and you never quit, you never give up, you never give in. Believe you will beat LSU and IT WILL HAPPEN.

LSU is nothing like an NFL Team, they couldn’t match up against the worst NFL Team, anyone who thinks LSU is that good, has to be Mentally Challenged and you people call UGA Fans Delusional. LOL

I think Marshall & Crowell can be a good one two punch. I’m frustrated that he’s been getting hurt a lot too, but even Lattimore has had some injuries at the end of last yr., & he’s not playing at all for the rest of this season. RBs take quite a pounding. I think it’s better to have a couple of great backs, 7 then we have some other pretty good ones as well.

This game might turn out like LSU-Bama…two defenses pounding on two offenses. If our O line can open just a tiny crack for us to run the ball, or give Murray time to throw every now and then, Dawgs win. LSU’s qb, Jefferson, is a great athlete but as a quarterback I’ll take Aaron.
‘05, LSU came in # 3, Dawgs # 13 I do believe it was….LSU heavy favorite, and I’m pretty sure the dogs won by 20. All you gotta do is play smart and play tough on every single snap.

Samuel being back and running like he did during his last game would be a huge addition. Crowell is a true freshman, and about as soft as any ‘5 star’ signee I’ve seen. Shows tremendous flashes, but just not for long.

If Marshall come to Georgia people will be saying the same negative things about him also. As 5′11 190lbs running in the SEC Marshall is going to get the same treatment Crowell is getting.

Jawga hasn’t played but one tough opponent and we know how Boise St manhandled the pups. Look for LSU to knock pansy-arse Crowell out of the game by mid 2nd Qtr. Jawga gonna find out what it’s like tonplay big boy football.
While Murray and other Dawgs have been patting themselves on the back after Tech win LSU is firing on all- cylinders to put a beat down like Georgia hasn’t seen since Bama stomped that tail 31-0 at half Athens 2008. Maybe LSU will get a black-out date from Jawga.
You puppy dogs better hope Miles is in a generous mood. If not- LSU 48 GA 10

I hope the season does not end in a boring rematch of LSU and UA so please give us a playoff like the FCS has with 16 teams or at least 8! It is long overdue because all other sports are decided on the field or in tournaments. What if UA had a kicker that did not miss 4 fgs? Hopefully we will have a clearer picture after these conference championship games. Play lights out and maybe good things will happen….remember 2005 when LSU was heavily favored and we beat them big-time. UGA fan happy for the Georgia Bulldog Nation worldwide and especially us in India who will be watching at 230 am Sunday morning! Glad I do not have a scheduled flight during that time.
