Heat Check: UGA’s torrid even with Crowell in cold storage

"Excuse me, sir, but have you seen my offense?" (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

"Excuse me, young man, but have you seen my offense?" (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Our Heat Check begins with the hottest team around — the still-unbeaten-heading-into-December Atlanta Hawks! OK, I’m joshing. (Not to be confused with still-a-Hawk-Josh Smith.)

Georgia Bulldogs: Their basketball team lost by two points at Colorado on Monday, which is actually a good sign. Their football team lost by two points at Colorado last season, and look at it now! Ten wins running, an SEC East title, a comprehensive victory over Georgia Tech, no more hot-seat talk about the coach. Heat Index: Warm, with the chance — should the Bulldogs unhorse LSU — of a truly toasty holiday season.

Isaiah Crowell: The heralded freshman didn’t play a down against Tech due to injury, and it mattered not — except maybe to Crowell’s case for being indispensable. He was, as we know, supposed to be the Missing Man. Now Mark Richt is telling running-back recruits that a great opportunity can be found in Athens. Heat Index: “Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., come on down! You’re the next contestant on ‘Who’s the New Herschel?’ ”

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: The Jackets had nine offensive touchdowns in 60 minutes against Kansas; they managed eight offensive touchdowns  in the 240 minutes of their four losses. Heat Index: In other news, Kansas just fired its coach.

Atlanta Braves: Frank Wren the GM is doing his speed-dialing exercises this week. Baseball’s winter meetings convene in Dallas on Monday. Heat Index: Red-hot Wren action coming right up!

Alex Gonzalez: The Braves declined to offer him arbitration, which mean Wren is looking for a shortstop. I’m guessing he doesn’t call Toronto to inquire about the availability of Yunel Escobar. Heat Index: Remember when Rafael Furcal spurned the Braves and John Schuerholz threw a presidential fit? He might have to grant a presidential pardon.

Atlanta Hawks: The NBA lockout is over. The Hawks will restart after Christmas. Might the Atlanta Spirit talk you into buying four dozen season tickets to serve as stocking stuffers? Heat Index: See next item.

Jamal Crawford: The Hawks’ fourth-best player is a free agent. He won’t be coming back. But Kirk Hinrich, who arrived at heavy cost in trade, will. Heat Index: Let the record reflect that the Hawks took top-seeded Chicago to six games in the Eastern Conference semis without Hinrich playing a minute.

Atlanta Falcons: They’re 7-4. Given that Houston might have to deploy Dan Pastorini at quarterback Sunday, they’ve got a real shot at being 8-4. Given that the two games after that are against Carolina and Jacksonville, they’ve got a real shot at being 10-4 when they play the Saints on Dec. 26. Heat Index: A month from now, we could be calling this the hottest team going.

Matt Ryan: He didn’t complete a long ball against the Vikings — Julio Jones dropped one and Roddy White stumbled reaching for another — but he did complete just about everything else. And his team did win. Heat Index: The Iceman warmeth.

The Jaguars new owner says he has no plans to move them to L.A. I’m not buying the “strong roots to the Jacksonville area” routine. I think it will be them that ends up in L.A.

@Bob how can you say that we would have lost all those games? really if you could predict the outcomes to games that well you should be in Vegas…we are playing the no.1 team in the country this weekend odds are we won’t win, but we are going to show up just the same. That you can count on.

@Coastal Dog SSI it should be by 1, but with the SEC and ESPN pressure for a rematch I’m thinking the north side of 50. And no LSU fans I’m saying we will win by 50 relax.

@Reality Gator: Either you can’t read or you can’t comprehend reading or both. My only reference to Urban Crier was that he left a sinking ship in Gainesville saying he had health problems and needed to spend more time with his family after after he lost his meal ticket Tim Tebow, one of the nicest people on the planet and a GREAT football player. You don’t have to tell me about Florida’s accomplishments but they are more Tebow’s accomplishments than Meyer’s. Call back in a year and let me know how you and yours are doing.

If Murry has a good game from start to finish and Bobo has a sound game plan then we can beat LSU.

If we have drops or if Murry can’t hit open receivers or Bobo revert to pass on first down, run up the gut on second and then we are 3rd and 12….we will loose…..Bobo must call a good game.

Think our defense holds it’s own!

Special teams must be special……not special ed!

trupert……..Crowell needs another good back to keep him focus? If that is the case, he needs to be playing at a Montisorie school not in the SEC. What a bunch of crap! What kid needs help in focusing when he is living his dream to play college ball. Trupert, you need to go and hug a tree and save a snail darter!

I think we will get Crowell’s best Saturday. Not because of fan/media pressure or the coaches pushing him. We get Crowell’s best, because his teammates will be in his face all week telling him they need him to show big. Peer pressure…nothing beats it.

you will be exposed. sure, you can beat up lesser teams and lesser opponents, but you fold like a house of cards when the big boys show up. and at LSU there are MEN on the Defensive side of the ball.

The SEC C game is Crowell’s chance to step up and win over the fan base. He could be the key to winning, so IC better be prepared to take some punishment and keep on grinding.

Folks…to compare Lattimors’ freshman season to Crowell is a joke………Lattimore won games for SC……he puts his team on his back…..I mean look at what he did against us his freshman year……his knee got blown out and that is the only reason he is not playing………………I wonder…when he does actually plays….when he is going to pull himself out the game cause he is dinged…….Imagine what our runnning game would have been with Lattimore?????????

I think Cromwell is the best back we have…he hits the hole well and has good vision….but…..don’t see Lattimore puffing on fake dope…pulling himself out of the game….

It’s time for Cromwell to make a beliver out of this UGA fan…… he is talented but is he just another thug that will be out of the program in a year?

@Prime Time (red shirt): Wanna estimate the number of “GREAT” coaches in history that DID NOT win the NC? Having the best team will not always get the job done. CMR’s 2007 team should have been named NC but you not only have to have a very good team but you got to have your politics right so why are you babbling around about “can CMR win a NC?” Why not just ask “Will any receiver who drops more than 5% of passes to him be named an All American”?

Your mind is at a middle school level(No offense to middle schoolers)

Amazing video of a high school senior from Columbia TN who kicks the ball dead straight 75-80 yards in the air. He was successful on 54 of 54 attempts this season….100%. Now he needs a college team. Wants to go to Georgia Tech!

If the O line can open some holes and Crowell develops a thicker freshman skin he will bring an added dimension to an already prolific UGA offense. Without him we still have a realistic shot at knocking these Mike The Tigers off.

Wouldn’t Dawg Nation LOVE to be the only 1 in the LSU Loss Column at seasonend!?

Remember you are The University of Georiga Bulldogs and you never quit, you never give up, you never give in. Believe you will beat LSU and IT WILL HAPPEN.

I think Marshall & Crowell can be a good one two punch. I’m frustrated that he’s been getting hurt a lot too, but even Lattimore has had some injuries at the end of last yr., & he’s not playing at all for the rest of this season. RBs take quite a pounding. I think it’s better to have a couple of great backs, 7 then we have some other pretty good ones as well.

This game might turn out like LSU-Bama…two defenses pounding on two offenses. If our O line can open just a tiny crack for us to run the ball, or give Murray time to throw every now and then, Dawgs win. LSU’s qb, Jefferson, is a great athlete but as a quarterback I’ll take Aaron.
‘05, LSU came in # 3, Dawgs # 13 I do believe it was….LSU heavy favorite, and I’m pretty sure the dogs won by 20. All you gotta do is play smart and play tough on every single snap.

Samuel being back and running like he did during his last game would be a huge addition. Crowell is a true freshman, and about as soft as any ‘5 star’ signee I’ve seen. Shows tremendous flashes, but just not for long.

If Marshall come to Georgia people will be saying the same negative things about him also. As 5′11 190lbs running in the SEC Marshall is going to get the same treatment Crowell is getting.

Jawga hasn’t played but one tough opponent and we know how Boise St manhandled the pups. Look for LSU to knock pansy-arse Crowell out of the game by mid 2nd Qtr. Jawga gonna find out what it’s like tonplay big boy football.

While Murray and other Dawgs have been patting themselves on the back after Tech win LSU is firing on all- cylinders to put a beat down like Georgia hasn’t seen since Bama stomped that tail 31-0 at half Athens 2008. Maybe LSU will get a black-out date from Jawga.

You puppy dogs better hope Miles is in a generous mood. If not- LSU 48 GA 10
