"Hey, I'm pumped. Who's with me?" (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
I wish I could say I’m looking forward to a great day of pro football here at the Dome, but I’d be a big fat liar. The Atlanta Falcons tend to play to the level of the opposition, and if that happens today …
(Pause to shudder.)
The Minnesota Vikings are awful, and they’re without their best player. (Adrian Peterson, RB.) They’re also without Brett Favre, Randy Moss, Alan Page, Joe Kapp, Carl Eller, Fran Tarkenton, Chuck Foreman, Cris Carter, Mick Tinglehoff and anyone else who ever put the pop in the Purple. The Vikings are 2-8, having beaten two other terrible teams (Arizona and Carolina).
This is one of those games the Falcons should win by three touchdowns, and I’m thinking it’s a game they need to win by three touchdowns. Even at 6-4, there’s scarcely a buzz about this team nationally or locally. I got out of Mass later than usual this morning, and I was thinking I might hit traffic around the Dome, but I drove right in at 11:30.
It’s 12:03 as I write, and there’s almost nobody in the house. I know it’s the Sunday after Thanksgiving and the day after Tech-Georgia, but still … this is, on the record, a pretty good NFL team. I wondered in preseason why more people weren’t talking about the Falcons, and on the final Sunday of November I’m wondering still.
So I ask again: Are you pumped about the Birds? Are you too stuffed with Thanksgiving turkey to care? Has watching Florida fall to 6-6 and Clemson to 9-3 last night dulled the senses? Is there anybody out there? Is this microphone on?
With that, I’ll hang up and await your responses. Assuming there are any.

The problem seems to be that they always find a way to disappoint. Last year was the biggest example of disappointment. I still remember back in the 80’s and someone asked a friend if he was a Falcons fan. His response…. “I try to be.”

There’s a game today?
Actually the only way I knew a game was being played at the Ga. Dome was when I checked my local TV listings and found out I had a choice between the Falcons/Vikings or NE/Philadelphia. I think I’ll stick a screw driver into my brain for entertainment today as the Football games on TV stink!

Arthur Blank should find the genius who came up with trading 2 years worth of picks for a wide receiver and kick his bollocks straight to the top of their idiot head.
On top of that we didnt do well in free agency and Ray Edwards is having a bad year.
All we had to do was get a little help on the O-line and some good defense help for our secondary. We couldve been sitting along side the Packers as top team in football.
I welcome anyone to debate the intelligence of going all out on a wide receiver when last years team couldve made the Superbowl with a few defense tweaks.
Arthur Blank should start knocking some heads together.

I just hope it is not like 2005 when a 6-2 falcons lost to a 1-7 Green Bay, or in 06 when the 5-3 Falcons lost to the 1-7 Detroit, then come back and lost to a 2-7 Cleveland back to back.

Agree with all the comments on the Jones draft day trade debacle. However, this is still a team better than the competition for the wild card spots. Mark, the talking heads on both ESPN and FOX almost unanimously favored the Falcons to make the playoffs with the Giants, Bears, and Lions fighting for the other spot. Lions’ chances dropping like a stone.

I remember Bob Berry, Dick Shiner, David Archer, Cannonball Butler, Pat Peppler, Norm Van Brocklin, Norb Hecker, Eddie LeBaron, Leeman Bennett, Marion Campbell (twice), Wallace Francis, Aundray Bruce, June Jones, Tim Mazzetti, Harmon Wages, Eddie Lee….the list goes on and on. If people think this version of the Falcons are not worthy, they really have no concept of history. So, yeah, I’m ready for this game. Winning has been a long time coming and I’ll take it any way it comes – close, big, whatever.

@ Mark Bradley,
I’m a life long Falcon fan. I have season tickets. It would be nice to see a few big victories in the regular season. Beat New Orleans. Beat Green Bay. Beat Chicago. All of your wins shouldn’t be coming from inferior opponents (Colts) or opponents with a key injury (Houston).
To answer your question, I will be excited if they make it out of the first round.

Atlanta fans as a whole tend to be relatively lackluster. I think it’s because this is a city of transplants and most people have a true “home team” that they root for…and the Falcons may not be it. Sure, it would have been a great catch had he made it. But if a receiver gets his fingertips on the ball without diving he had at least some chance of catching it. And, if he makes a clean break on the DB, it’s an easy TD.

Hello fans and Mark,
To answer the question from your article Mark, I think with the Falcons, and with all Atlanta sports teams really, we as fans are always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
What I mean by that is, even when the teams are good, and look like they could do something – inevitably there is a mental meltdown (Braves blow division lead) or they don’t show up for playoffs (Hawks and Falcons past several years)
I would call the fan base tentative at this point. We like what we see, but its hard to buy in until we see something more.
That being said, the Falcons are looking good today – I hope we can put together four or five TDs today to get some rhythm and confidence moving forward.

There’s a whole lot of complaining on here about a team that is looking pretty damn good in all phases today. We missed on a couple of deep passes, both of which were great routes and great passes, that just didn’t connect. Nobody is dropping wide open passes, everyone is on their assignment, only a couple of penalties, both relatively minor, and one coverage sack. Mularkey and BVG are both calling great games.
Some of you won’t be happy even when we win the Super Bowl. Probably still making ignorant comments about Julio being a bust.

I just don’t get why you all call any critics of Ryan “haters.” I just don’t get why you can’t be objective enough to admit his weaknesses. I just don’t get how you don’t see your own “blindness.” For the record, I don’t call him overrated & a mere game-manager for that throw to White…it’s the tons of throws made behind White/Jones or over their heads. We have every right to, in all objectivity, voice our displeasure with Ryan’s inability to hit downfield receivers in stride. Another thing for the record, I’m a lifelong Falcons fan & would love nothing more than to see them truly stretch the field & wreak havoc on opposing defenses. I just don’t believe Ryan has the deep-ball-ability to facilitate such an offense. That doesn’t make me a “hater.” It makes me a passionate, objective fan of the hometeam.

welikebaseball2…I hear you…to me, your comment sounded like someone who never gives Ryan any credit, because truly the two deep throws today, while not perfect, weren’t that bad (and I would argue the second one to White was a very good throw). I know Ryan’s limitations. But watching this offense the last few weeks, I’m seeing signs of maturation. I’m seeing the field open up more. I’m seeing teams far less able to key solely on Turner. I’m seeing more slants and hitting receivers over the middle in stride. I’m seeing Tony G more open then he used to be. I’m seeing Snellilng and Rodgers being used as outlets/change of pace wisely. In short. I’m definitely heartened by the offense. Yeah, Ryan may not hit as high a percentage of long throws as other QB’s but at least we are making the defense think about more than just Turner up the middle and receiver curl and out routes.

welikebaseball………it’s okay to be objective. I am. I know that Ryan throws some lousy balls sometimes and tries to squeeze balls in at times when he shouldn’t but all QB’s do that. But, as far as knocking him for not being able to throw the deep ball this offense isn’t designed to do that on a consistent basis. Yes, take some shots downfield now and then, but this offense doesn’t ask Ryan to do that. the offense is designed to move the chains with short to mid range passes and the run game. Move the chains and take time off the clock. It’s sort of a hybrid west coast offense but not a true west coast offense. So, if the offense doesn’t consistently throw the ball downfield you can’t expect him to always be right on target all the time. I saw Ryan for 3 years at BC and he never had trouble throwing the ball deep down the field. He HAS the ARM to DO IT. And you’re not going to see him throw it deep down the field on a regular basis in this offense. It’s just not designed that way.

If Ryan “made a career” of only beating .500 teams, well, his record would probably be around .500. Its not. Also, Remember 2005, being 6-2 and losing to a 1 win GB team? Or maybe in 2006, 5-2 and losing back to back to back an 0ff-er Detroit and 1 win Cleveland team?
Don’t ever criticize a team for “only” beating bad NFL teams. It is the NFL, they are all pros.

I’d rather be a fan of a team that “takes care of its business” consistently against the lesser teams and is “competitive” against the upper echelon teams. Nothing is more frustrating than to be a fan of a talent-laden squad that continually trips up against inferior opponents.
The challenge, of course, is that once you get in the playoffs, you generally only run into good teams, to that can become problematic.

@WeLike
I agree with you about being objective – however, it is human nature to notice the negatives more than the positives.
That being said, I dont think anyone can argue that Matt does not have a good deep ball ability. In fact, he is in the bottom 3-4 in the league in his deep ball. That doesnt mean that we cant win with him – he has a lot to like, gamer, smart decision, good manager and playcaller (Better than OC in my opinion).
However, I do wonder sometimes if this mentality of “good enough” is one reason Atlanta has seen so many let downs over the years. We seem to settle for “good enough” in this town when other teams are never satisfied and always trying to get better.
So will Ryans lack of a deep arm keep us from winning a Superbowl? I dont know, but I do know that the NFL is a PASS DRIVEN league now, and if you look at the last 15 or so years of SB champs… you see QBs who have good deep arms.
Just an opinion

But, now was have a staff that is going on their 4th winning season, and 3rd playoff berth, and you think that you, as a fan, if you show you are unwilling to accept this mediocre performance, that you force the owners to make changes, and assume the new coaches and QB will undoubtedly win a championship.
And when we get that Championship, we will raise the trophy to you, that Fan who was unwilling to accept mediocre performance.

@DawgNole
Yeah – it is really difficult to hear all the criticism of Atl fans being the worst and we dont support our teams etc.
We dont support them largely due to their own ineptness, I mean – yeah all those division titles were great for the Bravos. And for those of us who remember just how colossally bad the Braves used to be, it was great seeing them become such a great club.
However – You at one time had 3 Cy Young winners….not just on the team, but IN THE STARTING LINEUP…. and still we couldnt help but self destruct in the playoffs year after year.
Remember when we had the Thrashers? Remember how they were “rebuilding” for 10 years?
Dont even get me started on the Hawks.
In a lot of ways, all these franchises demonstrate my point. Heck look at Joe Johnson. Is he a great player – sure. Will he win you a championship in the East? Nope…never.
And that is the truth of it. We get to a certain level and just seem to say, “oh well that’s the best we can do” while other teams are signing Lebron, or Bosch.
For those of you who dont care about the NBA, lets ask this of the Falcons.
Suppose that the Colts decide to go after Luck and deal away Peyton. If nothing else on the Falcons changed except you had Peyton Manning under center, would we be a superbowl contender?
I think the answer to that question tells you a lot about the winning tradition in this town.

Here’s something else to “ponder”…Rogers sat behind Favre for 3 years before starting…Matt Ryan was thrown into the fire from day 1. Also Rogers inherited a talented team…Falcons had to be rebuilt the year Ryan was drafted.
I swear some of you are so close minded…Is Matt Ryan elite…NO…is Matt Ryan good…YES. The FUTURE is NOT SET, you can’t predict it. Lets wait and see where the Falcons go in the next 2 years or so.

Now JSS, why bring up Vick? Oh yea, I remember when he was 6-2 and lost to the 1-7 Green Bay team and missed the winning season and playoffs.
Or the next year, at 5-2, he lost to a no win Detroit team, then a 1-7 Cleveland team at home to blow up that playoff opportunity.
Thanks for reminding me to be appreciative of a guy who can beat inferior teams.

That is not crap against the wall… Fact, Anderson was at least serviceable when he played inside… They could have taken a cap hit (when TD took over and shed him), ask Arizona speaking of Matt Leinart… He was dreadful at DE… The better teams make lemonade, while the ones who can’t figure out 2 cups of sugar + 48 oz. of water + 7 large lemons squeezed = lemonade. Do you see the difference in those statements?

Supes: So, let me get this straight, Ryan’s poor passer rating against winning teams is because of receiver dropped balls? So, most of those INT’s mostly bounced out of receivers hands? Okay, if passer rating is “overrated,” let’s go with this stat…we’ve got 1 win out of 4 games against winning teams this year. There…how’s that? Are wins & losses “overrated”? My point is that, while I hope he shakes the trend, Ryan is not a big game QB…yet.

As for playing conservatively: They ran on first and second down, yes, but they threw on third to Gonzalez, who was on the ground and couldn’t get the last yard. Smith had to choose between going for it on fourth down — a Smitty hot button topic — and possibly giving a flailing opponent a short field, or punting it deep. I’d have punted. I’d do it again.
The only way the Falcons can lose is if they start giving Minnesota short fields.

Yes, AtlNative, I’m sorry to saythat I remember all of those regrettable events. Been pulling for this town’s pro sports teams since the mid-60s. It’s always wait ’til next year–or “Hey, it was just an exhibition game” (Falcons), or “Hey, it’s only April” (Braves), or “Hey, this is not a hockey town” (Flames/Thrashers), or “Hey, the team’s heading in the right direction; we made the playoffs” (Hawks). Falcons recipe for letting a team back in the game: A dose of run on 1st down for little to no gain. A scoop of check-down-to-the-RB on 2nd down. And, finally, a pinch of QB-run-&-slide-5-yards-short-of-marker on 3rd down.

There are 2 coaches in Atlanta that need to be released at the end of this season. 1. Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech who obviously cannot beat Georgia and doesn’t really care to try. 2. Mike Smith of the Falcons. The Falcons need more than just winning seasons: they need to win a playoff game, they need to remained focused for 60 minutes, not 30 like they do every single game which is why they’ll never win a playoff game because they are a 50% team. They need to lose to Minnesota today so the fans can start calling for a change before we end up like the bad years which are still fresh in our memories.

I can’t for the life of me understand why we still have Chris Owens on this team nor why we can’t get any playmakers in the secondary. We should be overcoming this stupidity by this point in the season and we have the fourth easiest schedule remaining…if we lose to anyone other than New Orleans going forward it will be a major disappointment to say the least and at worst, with so many players up for free agency, a re-tool especially on defense.

Like always, we get a lead and let our foot off the gas. The play calling goes passive in an effort to run the clock with an entire half left, rather than score and continue to put pressure on the other team. It’s remarkable how passive our strategies are on both sides of the ball with any sort of lead.
The game is 4 quarters, Mike. It’s not decided in the first half, and you need to start acting like it.

Okay Mr. Bradley, THIS is why there isn’t much of a “buzz” surrounding the Falcons. It is now well-established formula that a big first-half lead swiftly becomes “containment mode” rather than pouring it on and putting teams away in the second half. Time and time again. Even as a longtime fan I have to say this makes watching them hard at times.
Somebody BADLY needs to inform these guys that an NFL game lasts a full 60 minutes; I’ve never seen a team let opponents back into football games this consistently (and Heaven forbid they enter the second half TRAILING). Until the Falcons do what it takes to right the ship they will probably be a .500 or above team but will never remotely be elite.

The no-huddle produced 17 points in the first half, and we moved the ball with ease. Why would we continue running that same no-huddle when it worked so efficiently? Let’s instead huddle up, slow down the pace, manage no first downs, and continue going three and out…
No huddle = Ryan calling the plays.
Huddle = Mularkey calling the plays
Unless you’re a Minnesota fan, you opt for the former, not the ladder.

Sickening pattern against lesser teams…we open the game mixing it up on offense & it looks like a blowout going into the half, conservative playcalling lets the lesser team back in the game in the 3rd quarter as we play soft/zone defense & go ultra conservative on offense, in the 4th quarter we finally (via no huddle) show some urgency & squeak out a win against a team we should’ve blown out.

The falcons are a good team, solid in several areas, but there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed. Especially the halftime “adjustments”, which we always seem to lose for some reason.
I will say this, if we make the playoffs, then we need to win at least one game or there will be a lot of questions about where this team is heading.

Can the haters stop with Matt Ryan? He has played very, very well the past few weeks. And I have a hard time calling a rookie WR (JJ) a “bust” until he’s had a year or tow. Remember, it took Roddy White 3 seasons to show that he as a #1 receiver. The good news is that ‘Spoon has turned into an impact player on defense and we had a decent rush today. But our secondary will be the key to going anywhere in the playoffs. They were fairly awful today.

Now that I think about it, I think it will be more favorable if the Saints win. The odds for the Falcons to overtake the Saints is less than their chance to make a wild card spot. If the Giants are defeated by the Saints and Packers, that will increase the Falcons probabilty. It’s all a moot point anyway, they be one and done. If the wildcard is a home game, atleast it will add a few bucks to the local businesses.

JJ is still not the #1 or #2 receiver on this team in terms of where Ryan looks. It is White and Gonzalez depending on the scenario. Douglas is playing a nice role these days too. JJ will have his games I believe, and should be a big factor in a few upcoming games. Just my opinion. I like what I have seen when he has been the receiver of choice. TBD what the perception/final analysis will be on the draft choices traded. I can’t worry about that now and just look forward to him getting involved a bit more.

Damon . .. .I don’t get your line of thinking. If the Giants beat the Saints tomorrow, then the Falcons are in control of their own fate. Now winning 5 games in a row in this league is tough if you are not the Packers these days. Still, how can you claim you’d rather have the Giants win because their odds are less favorable to overtake the Saints. Remember that was a very close game in Atlanta . . .and last year I believe the home team lost both games.

@njfalcon – The Haters will NEVER unfortunately let up on Matt Ryan. Simple reasoning..he is not the beloved Mike Vick. Even though Matt is a FAR superior QB, with a lot more talent and winning percentage and damn, you could go on and on. Their just pissed because someone came in and bailed this team out, and not only that, turned a disaster into a perennial contender. Something Vick NEVER did…and looks like never will. Petty. Trifling. Call it what you will. Unfortunately, the AJC blogs seem content to let them spew this garbage year after year instead of blocking these fools, turning this place into a septic tank of stupidity.

The Carolina game will decide the season. Jacksonville and Tampa should be wins (you can see the Bucs coming apart today), leaving the games at New Orleans, Houston and Carolina. And finally the cry baby “it is all because of Vick” fixation blogger sidekick shows up… This is all about Matt Ryan, win a playoff game first… Then win a Super Bowl… That will be the only thing that will shut-up any detractor of any QB… Ask Jim Plunkett, Dan Pastaroni, Marc Wilson. Don Majikowski, and countless others… Any Dan Marino knows that his biography reads like the “Never won a Super Bowl!” And Matt Ryan reads “Never won a playoff game!” Simple as that, it hurts you, and you will name call and and troll on folks, but it is what is… And it ain’t about Michael Vick!

I’m not sure how Marc Wilson fits into the debate. I remember when he played and don’t recall anyone thinking he was anything special. I know a lot of fans on this blog feel Ryan is not elite or even special, but he gets a bit more pub by national folks than M. Wilson. Odd game.
Dominique Franks is probably the dude who screwed us up the most. He was supposed to cover Harvin on 4th and 13 and blew his assignment. He’s also the guy who got hit with the punt that set the Vikes up in our territory to start that drive. Hell, if Smitty doesn’t challenge Gerhart’s alleged reception, the Vikes would’ve kicked a FG anyway.
Ryan was on point. Roddy and Tony had strong games. Jacquizz had a couple of nice plays. We got bogged down again in the second half. I have no idea why.
Again, it was an odd game, but we got the W. Hell, we even covered.

Wilson as you remember was the first of the BYU bombs away savior QBs. He was drafted for the express reason of unseating the FA castaway Jim Plunkett that season in 1980. There was always the pressure to make him no. 1! All Plunkett did was win, even with lesser Raider talent until they reload for the 2nd of his SB wins. When Wilson got his chances, regardless of his intangibles he could never get the Raiders over any hump…
Look, I never demean Marino’s numbers, but he just could not win the big game… Sorry, but the NFL is a zero-sum contest in that manner, you gotta win it! I can add someone like Steve McNair to that list… When you’re there, you just have to do it… Shoot, I give Vick heck because of it, but at least he, McNair, Marino, and Pastaroni were not “one and done!”

So there is the chance that Yates does just enough and the D holds back the Falcons. These things happen. Hows it going JSS. I don’t know if I agree with the “zero sum” assessment. I know it works nicely in certain arguments against Ryan for not yet being part of a Playoff Win never mind SB, but although folks will always know Marino’s teams did not win a SB, he still is looked at as an incredible and great QB. Like I said, I live down in SE Florida now, and Marino is God to these folks . ..not Bob Griese who won a couple of SBs. Jim Kelly will always be remembered as a great QB . …even though he lost several SBs. Again – not winning a SB will always be something that they’ll remember, and yes in the end it may put Brady, Manning, Elway, Favre, and Brees a notch above in some assessments. It doesn’t do much for Dilfer. Rypien will be remembered as a pretty good QB …for those who remember him:) Plunkett . . .solid QB with Raiders, Namath – really not great but hey . . .he’s Joe Namath:) McMahon . … .hmmm not sure where to put him. Melissa, the Vikes had one nice drive, and got a bunch of yards on a play the Falcs D would like back on that shortened drive caused by the punt receiving team turnover. But they still held the Vikes to only 226 total yards!! The Falcs had 22 1st downs to the Vikings 12 and time of possession once again is well in Falcs advantage. I rated Super Bowl winning QBs a few years back… Namath is an anomaly… There is no good way to judge him because Weeb Eubanks just let him have carte blanche… He had 1950s river boat gambler numbers an he put some old school AFL numbers a couple of seasons… Griese will always get the short cuff in S. Florida because he was the beneficiary of the No name Defense. His managing of the 3 SB appearances have been tainted by that, and the love of Earl Morrall by the oldies didn’t make things clear for him… By the time he got his stuff together, it was an Steelers-Raiders AFC… McMahon was just one tough something, if they’d ever given him real wideouts (Gault, Mooorehead, and McKinnon) were a joke… Payton and that defense, that was it… Marino is beloved because he was a modern riverboat gambler… But in other places, they just shrug their shoulders and say great numbers, but did he win, like Jurgensen and Tittle?

JSS – don’t agree with that “shrug shoulder” comment either. It would be like saying people think Karl Malone, John Stockton, and Charles Barkley weren’t any good. I lived in Mass and was/am a Pats fan primarily . …..we did not shrug our shoulders at Marino. I don’t think any fan of any team did. He just did not have the team around him in the end to match the Buffalo Bills mostly nor the overall talent of the multiple SB winners – 49ers and Cowboys. Anyone who thinks Troy Aikman was anywhere near as good as Marino .. ..well I guess I’d have to allow them their incredibly wrong opinion
I really think this “No SB” not a great QB thing is more for bloggers and not the folks we see on TV. They will mention it as an additional piece if you are comparing Marino to Montana . . ..which will give Montana the nod. But at least they are saying Marino belongs in the discussion. Sum Zero seems to indicate they don’t belong in the discussion without a Championship. Barry Sanders does not belong in the discussion? Dan Fouts? John Hannah? Thurman Thomas? Bruce Smith? My predictions:
Ryan will win (at least) his first playoff game this year.
Reid will be fired.
The Eagles will hire the fifth head coach to be killed by Vick.
Vick will be out of football in 3 years max.

But Chuck knox was not a rookie coach….But even if he was, just you comparing him to Ryan/Smitty just shows who amazing they are.

JSS,
Vick did not lead the Falcons. He is not a leader. He is a player, not a leader. He came into the office last and was the first one to leave. Nevermind what he did once he left but he was never and will never be a team leader like a championship quarterback should be. Matt Ryan is putting in 110% to help his team win. Vick never gave more than 80%. Now STFU about Matt Ryan.
Mr Charlie

Fact is, Vick did nothing that “Greats” Steve Bartkowski, Chris Miller, or Chris Chandler did.
However, in his first 2 years in the league, Ryan has.
JSS

Not amazing, because they acted every bit of a rookie tandem when it counted… Empty backfield with a suspect line and we all know what happened next….

I agree that Vick could put the team on his back like Ryan never could, but on the same token, a great QB does not have to do that. A great QB uses his teammates. If Vick thought he had to make an amazing play to win a game, it just showed that he did not have confidence in his teammates, and that is poor leadership. Vick was shelfish, and it showed.

Mr. Charlie . . . I totally agree. I remember coming into the blogs for the first time that year under the moniker “Recent Reader” . . .hence after a season I changed it to “Once” Recent Reader. Witty guy I am . . . in my own mind
I had always liked Falcs since Gritz Blitz after Pats, and am a BC alum from the Flutie days (there’s the age area!) so I was excited that Ryan went to a team I had liked and followed after the Pats for years. I was absolutely shocked at what I got when I started on AJC posts to follow Ryan’s progress. The vitriole between Vick supporters/detractors was very ugly …..but more upsetting to a BC guy was seeing that many Falcon fans had an extremely negative opinion of Ryan right off the bat. Some for football concerns, others I learned were just not going to truly be fair in assessing his play. Oh well!! Yes, I was excited and impressed by the Team and Ryan’s play that first season as well as the coaching. I just mention the Arizona game as I truly thought the better team did not win that game . . ..not by way of the season results but by what I saw during the game. Goes to show how one or two mistakes can have incredible impacts. One flag can change the flow and results. I still was happy for the team’s success. (But still think that team could have done a lot, particularly in comparison to the competition that year.)

If his 110% leadership = 0-2 in the playoffs, thus that is a very inefficient engine… Stand behind him (Ryan) and shout Tramon Williams!!! Boo!!!

Again, a rookie HC and QB, taking a 4-12 laughing stock of the league team to the playoffs in their 1st year? That alone is quite impressive. I do not expect you to agree. But like 72 calling Ryan a Bust while he went 27/34 with 3 TD, your logic is being exposed as being very very weak.

Hey there JSS . . ..I just don’t think in assessing a QB that the regular season should have less grading level than the playoffs. Don’t get me wrong, winning the playoffs will be something that this team will need to do if they continue to get there. And Ryan will have to be starting QB in a win to show he can master that “win or go home atmosphere”. I’m just saying SB or Bust for assessing an individuals talent would eliminate a lot of great players from the Hall of Fame simply because their team was not as good as the opponent’s in the SB.

Once, well the Cards did get to the SB, it coulda been us! Again, Vick took us as far at Chris Miller, Bart, and Chris Chandler, so he did nothing that we had not seen before. But Ryan has made us a consistent winner, something none of the aforementioned QBs could do.

Sorry, great QBs do when they have to do it sometime… I remember Montana doing it three times, but here is the difference, when he needed Dwight Clark to be a man and make a play, he did… When he needed Earl Cooper to be a man and make a play, he did… When he needed Fred Dean or Charles Haley to be men, and make a play, they did… Now I’ll bring it back to a team game…. Vick and Ryan play(ed) on teams that are very flawed… Here is the difference between you and I… I don’t lie to myself in hope that they are going to morph into something else…

Falcons lost 4 games this year, in two of them, Ryan led them down the field and put the ball in Roddy’s hands at the end of the game. That is what I call taking the team and putting them on his shoulders.
But today, there Roddy was, trolling the endzone for the W, and did Ryan try to put the team on his shoulders because he did not trust Roddy? Nope, he put it in Roddy’s hands again…And he caught it….LEADERSHIP.

It does not matter what happens to leaders, it is how they respond. Again, Roddy dropped 2 game winning TDs this year, and yet, today, Ryan threw to him with total confidence for the game clinching TD. THAT is leadership.

Phil I agree. I understand we are 0-2 in playoffs under Coach Smith and with M. Ryan starting at QB . . . .but does that erase the 40-19 winning record? I just don’t think it can be discounted. Now they do have a little playoff Monkey that has to be removed from our back . . … .hopefully Falcs get the opportunity and then remove it this year!

Mark, I am confident the problem is coach smiths unwillingless to let this offense flow aggressively for 4 qtrs….case in point…we come out strong, two quick TD’s then coach reeels it back to 3 yrs and a clpud of smoke….team gets out of sync….how many times does this happen…we look like world beaters to start a game, only to throttle down coach smith gets so darn tentitive…..or we wait til 6 min. left in 4th qtr, to allow offense to open up to make up for suspect play calling the 1st 55 minutes of game….am i the only one that sees this?
