Live from Tech-UGA: Dogs are doomed (because I pick them)

For the record, I also picked Georgia in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Just for the record: I also picked Georgia back in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

I’ve seen Georgia Tech play five times in person; I’ve seen Georgia six times. Of the teams’ five losses, I’ve covered them all. (Which I guess makes me bad luck. But you knew that already.) I’m not claiming this season’s worth of close observation makes me an expert — you all know better, don’t you? — but it does render me duty-bound to offer this:

I wouldn’t be shocked if Tech wins today. But I would be surprised.

The two best units in this game — Tech’s offense and Georgia’s defense — will deploy against one another. I don’t think Georgia’s D will shut down Paul Johnson’s O, but I don’t see Tech gaining 500 yards again. Say Tech gets 20 points. Will that be enough to win?

Don’t think so. Georgia’s offense isn’t the smoothest-running assemblage, but I don’t see Tech’s defense holding the Bulldogs under 20 points. (Even though Kentucky just did.) If the Bulldogs can find a tailback — a big “if,” I’ll concede — they should be able to keep the ball and keep Johnson’s offense off the field long enough to matter.

Then again, I’m often wrong. But let me note that I picked Georgia to go 10-2 and Tech to finish 8-4 … and both things would happen if the Bulldogs win. I’m saying they will. But maybe you disagree.

And that, as luck would have it, is why we have these live chats. Feel free to disagree. Or agree. Or abstain. I’ll be here until one team or the other actually wins, and I welcome your company. But let me also say this: I’m not inclined to let extraneous issues derail this exercise. So let’s try to keep this installment of Old-Fashioned Hate somewhat clean, OK?

As ever, I thank you in advance.

I just hope PJ dosen’t choke in the end as the last 2 seasons—-4 deep passes, and last season, Washington running and passing, when Allen is gaining all the rushng yards. I’m worried about Grohs defensive plan. Why does he have his defensive backs let the other team catch the ball then tackle him? Why not play on the line with them? If they beat you, let them throw deep.

What happens if Tech wins? Does the sugar still fall from the sky for all of you….or do you start throwing nails and kicking Richt with that hobnailed boot again? What happens if Tech wins…..or even scores the first TD for that matter.

Here is what happens:

“Richt sucks…especially when he is kissing his wife!”

“Hire Kirby Smart right now! He is ten times smarter than Richt and Muschamp combined!”

“We need a new OC…..hire Charlie Weis as soon as Muschamp fires him at the end of the year!”

“Send Crowell to South Alabama and sign Marshall now….he’s the next Herschel Walker!”

“All Georgia does is run the ball on 3rd down. Fire everyone!”

“All Georgia does is pass the ball on 3rd down. Fire everyone!”

“I told you so. This team will always suck with Richt as the head coach!”

Then…..Georgia pulls it out the win at the end and Richt gives his wife the tongue on TV again:

“Man, Richt is the best kisser I have even seen!”

“Kirby Smart can’t carry Richt’s jockstrap now or ever in the future. Just like Muschamp.”

“Bobo always pulls it out for us, and Weis is fat and stupid.”

“Wow….can you imagine…..Crowell and Marshall in the same backfield. Who needs Herschel Walker.”

“Wow….Georgia has the most balanced offense in the country….a lot better than LSU and Bama. And our defense is a lot better as well. SEC title and national titles, baby. Book it!”

“Mark Richt is the best coach ever. Sign him to an extension now……well….maybe we should wait until after the LSU game.”

Key for UGA defense is:
1- dish the cut blocker 2- read the play 3- play your assignment (dive, qb, or rb)

If you look at how Miami stonewalled Tech, key was taking away the middle. With Jenkins & Geathers up the middle, could be a long day for Tech, as I’m sure Grantham will have studied the Miami game closely, since that was Tech’s worst rushing game. Tech didn’t even break 150 yards against Miami.

on any given Saturday any team can beat any team – see Nebraska picked by 30 and losing – see Oklahoma picked by 30 at home and losing – see Oklahoma St. picked by 4 TD’s and losing…….some days it just doesn’t go your way. I want to see if CTG has learned how to handle the Tech O like Virginia did. Our offense has once again gone Jekyl and Hyde – who knows – every game this year has been overly influenced by our defense – they say our D has not stopped anybody of note this year. IF they stop Tech, will that any longer be a valid comment? I don’t see Tech winning. Not this year or any time soon. But let’s face it – nobody wins ‘em all! GO DAWGS!!!!!

Yeah, Gator,

I actually liked playing basketball more than I liked playing football.

No doubt about it, last year was the pits for UGA. But it’s pretty clear the program is rising again. Next year is the key one for Florida and will tell where the program is headed. The SEC East needs to get tough again. Tennessee doesn’t seem close; SC peaks at 9-10 wins; Vandy is improving but . . .; it’s going to be up to UGA and Florida, and right now Dawgs are clearly leading that resurgence.

UGA and Gators need to be the counterweight to LSU and Alabama.

Come on Mark … I know you’re not a dumb guy. Georgia Tech (8-3) plays Georgia (9-2) at home in an interstate rivalry game, with LSU on the horizon next week for the Dogs, and you say you’d be surprised if Tech won? Notwithstanding the fact it shouldn’t be a surprise for any team to win a rivalry game barring 11-0 vs. 0-11, the home-field advantage alone should remove the “surprise” element from a game between two schools with similar records. You might think Georgia will win, but “surprised?” It wouldn’t surprise me if these two played nine overtimes and the game ended 99-97. In other words, NOTHING would surprise me in this game anymore.

Well folks, This is my first saturday in 9 weeks where I am not working at a college football game.

Nice to be at home sitting in front of the 55 inch television.

I have seen EVERY team in the SEC and ACC with the exception of Kentucky from either the booth or sideline. UGA is athletic as anyone in either league. Size and physical components puts them somewhere in the middle. I will admit I saw UGA early with Ogletree and without Ogletree and he does make a difference for the defense.

LSU and Alabama are really men playing with boys and they look like men when they line up with other folks. UGA will have to use EVERY weapon in their arsenal to win next week. To beat LSU or Alabama you will need a great deal of misdirection and quick hitting passes as LSU will not allow much time to throw the deep ball. But UGA can compete and will need some breaks.

Today, GT is probably a few athletes short to stay with UGA for 4 quarters and will need Murray to make some poor throws to win this one. But stranger things have happened.

Good LUCK to your teams today.

Before anyone talks about Cut blocking be dirty, please remember the rule was drastically changed 7 years ago and it was a dirty play back then. But EVERY Team does it every game. If you look closely you will see the UGA guard pull on the counter and he cut blocks the oppostite side linebacker. It is one of the bread and butter plays UGA has run during the Mark Richt era at UGA.

I agree cutting a player is not a safe play but if a player on defense is dive bombing each play it is a way to get him to move and stand up forcing the play in the direction the play is designed to go.

The only time you’ve accomplished this before as starter was last year against Duke, when we trailed 14-7 at halftime. All of the other times, when going into a halftime deficit, we’ve lost. We’re not built for comebacks. The only way I see us pulling this one off is if our defense stiffens up… and our offense kicks into high gear…

You have to figure that our offense and O line are going to wear on Tech in the second half….those boys are big and conditioned to play this year. We get the ball first. I like the way our D has kept Tech’s big plays to a minimum….that’s a hard offense to completely shut down. Still, as much as I would like a win today, the game that counts is next week. Tech can eat clock and grind but we can score in a minute. If we get a 14 point lead or better it’s over.

Coach Grantham will adjust at half time and we’ll see much better defense in the 2nd half.

On offense, gotta put the pedal to the metal and score at least two more times. Tech cannot come back from being down 24-10 or 31-10. They just won’t. They’re offense kills clock on them.

Tech cannot pass short passes over the middle like Georgia can; Tech needs to blitz on every defensive down; Tech supposedly had Hill wide open on first play of game, 30 yds open, and rb did not look at all receivers which a qb would have done; Tech cannot committ any penaltys, not one; Washington had rb wide open on short pass to the sidelines and overthrew him like Nez used to do; Tech keeps running and passing to sidelines, Georgia does this downfield toward the goal line, not to sidelines; Tech will never score if they run/pass only toward the sides of field

Tech does keep games close with their offense because of how much clock they eat up. Close enough to pull em off in the end. Game isn’t over. But if we score and go up 24-10, GT has to start thinking about passing because running the ball and eating up 7 minutes at a time won’t win for you.

I think we need to start running the ball in the 2nd half. Use Malcome, Thomas, Harton, etc. Wear Tech out.

OK, first half shows enough. Georgia has played only two teams and won that had a winning record and Tech makes them look like champions. Paul Johnson once again does not prepare the team to compete. Tech plays legitimate student-athletes who will go on to successful careers in industrial management and engineering.

Georgia plays bozos who would not have met the academic requirements to enter any college or university. The few who actually graduate will have worthless degrees and skills for which there is no demand. Most will be pathetic losers who are a burden on society. Fortunately the CEOs of Walmart and Waffle House are Tech alumni who will give some of them jobs, but even a graveyard shift fry cook has to have some skills and the ability to stay sober.

Yes, Tech fans would love to defeat Georgia more often, but not at the win-at-all-costs price that Georgia pays.

Next time you see a homeless drunk, be kind to him, he may be a former UGA player.

I’ve never understood how anyone could take any pride in the UGA football team. Look at their history for the past forty years: how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the remedial studies scam, the Jim Harrick sleaze, the DUIs in the athletic office (not just Damon Evans), the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school label (for the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and sickening as it is, I don’t see many alumni and fans demanding an end to this sleazy activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school that decent people despise and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Everybody that breathes knew before this game that the key question was Tech’s pass defense. Its not about Tech’s offense. You ALWAYS put your best atheletes on defense. If you any left put them on offense. But because Johnson knows NOTHING about defense, he persists in limiting the top weapon in football. Defense. Even Spurrier figured this out.

It’s common knowledge and an unquestioned fact that UGA head football coach Mark Richt has brought shame on the state of Georgia and made an embarrassing laughingstock of the state’s largest university. Even the most avid UGA fans understand this even when they won’t acknowledge it, bless their hearts. :-)

The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence jerks who barely graduated from high school, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win.

Richt is a product of the lawless environments of the University of Miami and Florida State University, where he learned well how to conduct himself in the most tawdry way, while pretending to the world to be a saint. Make no mistake – Richt is in coaching purely for the millions of dollars that have been wasted on him, and the millions more he will add until someone in Athens has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to run him out of town.

A truly shameful situation, especially since all Georgians, including UGA alumni and fans, have to live under this shadow of infamy.

Georgia Tech faithful… Please come to grips with reality. This is a gimmick scheme with hardly any talent/size. Watching this game has been enjoyable, particularly after all the crap and smack talk I’ve dealt with during the week from your fans. It’s embarrassing. This game is hardly a rivalry. The only thing keeping the rivalry alive is your fan base and the could’ve/should’ve/would’ve’s that accompany the post-game chatter. Your support is unjustified. Chan Gailey recruited talent, something sorely lacking at Tech. Sure, he lost to Georgia a lot, but consider those teams that he played against. This is the best Georgia has been in roughly 4 seasons. Remove Paul Johnson and his scheme. Start from scratch. God Bless Tevin Washington. He might be the worst thrower in the entire Southeastern United States. Georgia might as well have scheduled Northwestern. Make this game intriguing for both sides, please fire Paul Johnson. 10 out of 11 seasons now. Glory, Glory to Old Georgia and to HELL with Georgia Tech!

Bradley, at what point does the coach start bearing some responsibility for the outcome? You tout him as a genius when he wins but put it all on the players when he loses. I follow you columns closely. I’ve never seen such a mancrush on a head coach since Schlabach was at the AJC and Richt came on board.

Thanks.

As for LSU, I am proud of the way both teams played, felt like we controlled the game better than LSU and our play calling on offense was not up to par in that kind of game. It is going to be an interesting game in New Orleans.

Bradley, 8-4 was actually my prediction for them this year. I guess we just disagree on how they got there. It seems to me that Johnson is a very one dimensional coach. He knows the 20 or so plays that make up his offense but beyond that he doesn’t know much about the game. The defense is a total disaster year after year after year. You can’t put that all on the players when it is consistantly that bad. He has never been able to develop a legitimate passing game and it hurts them.

He is now 2-6 vs. UGA and VT and 0-3 in bowl games. That’s all the players’ fault Bradley?
