Just for the record: I also picked Georgia back in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
I’ve seen Georgia Tech play five times in person; I’ve seen Georgia six times. Of the teams’ five losses, I’ve covered them all. (Which I guess makes me bad luck. But you knew that already.) I’m not claiming this season’s worth of close observation makes me an expert — you all know better, don’t you? — but it does render me duty-bound to offer this:
I wouldn’t be shocked if Tech wins today. But I would be surprised.
The two best units in this game — Tech’s offense and Georgia’s defense — will deploy against one another. I don’t think Georgia’s D will shut down Paul Johnson’s O, but I don’t see Tech gaining 500 yards again. Say Tech gets 20 points. Will that be enough to win?
Don’t think so. Georgia’s offense isn’t the smoothest-running assemblage, but I don’t see Tech’s defense holding the Bulldogs under 20 points. (Even though Kentucky just did.) If the Bulldogs can find a tailback — a big “if,” I’ll concede — they should be able to keep the ball and keep Johnson’s offense off the field long enough to matter.
Then again, I’m often wrong. But let me note that I picked Georgia to go 10-2 and Tech to finish 8-4 … and both things would happen if the Bulldogs win. I’m saying they will. But maybe you disagree.
And that, as luck would have it, is why we have these live chats. Feel free to disagree. Or agree. Or abstain. I’ll be here until one team or the other actually wins, and I welcome your company. But let me also say this: I’m not inclined to let extraneous issues derail this exercise. So let’s try to keep this installment of Old-Fashioned Hate somewhat clean, OK?
As ever, I thank you in advance.

I live in GatorNation and know a lot of people within the program….past and present…..and the people within the walls of the athletic department are about as stand up as you can get. If you don’t believe me, ask your current AD, who used to be one of them.

Hey “supersize” and “5150TOAD”, do either of you have an extra copy of those lousy offensive teams UGa beat this year??? Don’t forget to add today’s game. Bummer, the Dawgs still haven’t beaten a good team this year!!!

Not saying they are not “Stand up”, but “stand up” people still get sick of one another….. Urban and UF, did not give death til we part vows.
Like I said, give him a few 4-6 seasons, a trip to Shreveport, and those “stand up people” will be renting his Uhaul. Ask Mark Richt.

Yes, the GatorNation expects and expects a lot from its football progam…..like Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Ohio State….and other elite programs.

I am sure Ohio State thinks a lot of their program too. Urban just was not happy, can’t you understand that? Just respect him for not overstaying his welcome.

Ive always said that the current problem with UGA is that we are happy with 10 win seasons even though we lose to teams we shouldnt have lost to. Ex Boise and SC this year

Tech, it ain’t a fair fight. Tech just does not have the resources to compete at the SEC level. No dis-respect, they just don’t have the cash and facilities. CPJ is a perfect fit for Tech.

Flat Tire, it is a good point, but that is football you know. The really hard part of this would be if we snuck up and beat LSU (not likely). The fumbles and messed up screen passes at SC would be the difference in being in the BCS national title game.

Horseplay, I know this isn’t likely, but suppose we bit them badly? That would create a whirlwind among the talking heads. Nothing is perfect. Think about baseball. Everybody understands that your record only gets you a ticket to the dance–the playoffs. When a wild card wins the Series, nobody says they didn’t deserve it. The poll thing in football probably gets too much attention.

Who even cares what the commentators say? Nothing cracks me up more than people who let the stupid talking head get their ire up. Talk about meaningless…..Exactly Perro, no other sport counts what happened in week 2. If you get to the dance, the best dancer on that day wins. Again, if we somehow beat LSU, we will be the most talked about team in the nation.

Our ball game has been over for more than 2 hours and the mutts are still gloating. All of you had the right to gloat and pick on us once or twice. But it is way past being just annoying. And the mutts know who I’m talking to. I am doing my best to be a gracious loser, but you are stretching it a bit too far. To the folks who have shown class and gloated in a reasonable manner, I say Georgie played a good game. Ya’ll won and I hate it, especially the 10 of 11 part, but it is what it is. I just can’t quite make myself wish ya’ll well next week. My psyche won’t let me turn it on & off like that. I am a GT supporter in all things and just can’t pull for any other team. If ya’ll win, OK. Too the mutts, get a life!

I’m not usually one to say, ‘I TOLD YOU SO’ but I told all of you back in August that this is exactly what would happen with UGA. They’ve got the most talent and heart (in players, coaches and administration) I’ve seen in a UGA team since the VINCE DOOLEY/ERK RUSSELL ERA of the 70’s and early 80’s. And their young talent has improved exponentially since that first loss with Boise ST (just like I predicted they would). They should have beaten USC, but lost the coaching/Special Teams battle. Special Teams seems to have been straightened out by putting their talent in there to play instead of their hopefuls. And Mike Bobo now has all the weapons at his disposal to execute his style of offense. Which, BTW, is remarkably like the “Bobby Bowden” style under which Mark Richt excelled and got him the UGA head coaching position in the first place.
