Live from Tech-UGA: Dogs are doomed (because I pick them)

For the record, I also picked Georgia in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Just for the record: I also picked Georgia back in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

I’ve seen Georgia Tech play five times in person; I’ve seen Georgia six times. Of the teams’ five losses, I’ve covered them all. (Which I guess makes me bad luck. But you knew that already.) I’m not claiming this season’s worth of close observation makes me an expert — you all know better, don’t you? — but it does render me duty-bound to offer this:

I wouldn’t be shocked if Tech wins today. But I would be surprised.

The two best units in this game — Tech’s offense and Georgia’s defense — will deploy against one another. I don’t think Georgia’s D will shut down Paul Johnson’s O, but I don’t see Tech gaining 500 yards again. Say Tech gets 20 points. Will that be enough to win?

Don’t think so. Georgia’s offense isn’t the smoothest-running assemblage, but I don’t see Tech’s defense holding the Bulldogs under 20 points. (Even though Kentucky just did.) If the Bulldogs can find a tailback — a big “if,” I’ll concede — they should be able to keep the ball and keep Johnson’s offense off the field long enough to matter.

Then again, I’m often wrong. But let me note that I picked Georgia to go 10-2 and Tech to finish 8-4 … and both things would happen if the Bulldogs win. I’m saying they will. But maybe you disagree.

And that, as luck would have it, is why we have these live chats. Feel free to disagree. Or agree. Or abstain. I’ll be here until one team or the other actually wins, and I welcome your company. But let me also say this: I’m not inclined to let extraneous issues derail this exercise. So let’s try to keep this installment of Old-Fashioned Hate somewhat clean, OK?

As ever, I thank you in advance.

14 GT, you ran your mouth about saying things to my face. OK Great. Do you think I am going to punch an old man with a heart condition? Not at all. It just ticks me off when people talk about getting in someone’s face on a forum. I gave my email to you. I wanted you to know what I do for a living the next time you feel like you want to get ins someone’s face.

Tech had a good year – they had a couple of good wins – good for them – I hope they send their seniors out with a bowl win…………..as for the Dawgs – winning 10 in a row is not easy in any conference – just ask Boise State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Nebraska! These Dawgs can hunt! And we did it for most of the year wothout a running game we could count on from week to week! As for all of this negative talk about our defense and how they have not played anybody – how about Auburn – the # 2 rushing team in the SEC – shut down and now the “most potent” running game in the country” as the talking heads are always describing it – 79 yards in the seconmd half when they had to have it????? This defense can hold its own – GO DAWGS!

“That South Carolina loss really sucks now…11-1 playing for SEC title would let us have a chance to play for Championship with win.”

Well, we’re playing for the real championship Ward, so why dwell on a mythical title? If Georgia wins the SEC, that’s good enough for me.

The BCS is a joke, but the AP/UPI system before that was just as bad. There’s no way a legit champion emerges from this mess because there’s no way to decide which one-loss team deserves to play in the title game. And if Georgia wins the SEC and two teams that didn’t even win their conference(LSU and Alabama) play for the “national title”, that would be the ultimate indictment of this bizarre, screwed-up system.

The head game ( if there was one) was lost when Tech gave Walsh a second chance at the field goal at the end of the first half. It was clear then who had the breaks advantage. Don’t get me wrong. UGA won fair and square but the mental impact of the second chance field goal spelled doom.

Does anyone remember when Paul Johnson was hired that there was some clown friend of his from North Carolina who said words to the effect of “Mark Richt better be worried”……..what a joke!!!!! Four years into Johnson’s coaching regime and you are really no different than you were under Chan Gailey – another 8 – 4 season……..

Bobo will have to take the cuffs off Murray and use these talented receivers. We won’t get a 100 on the ground against LSU. LSU is a little better on D than Tech and Tech manhandled our running game in the first half. Running between the tackles against LSU is just giving a down up.

While i am not one for being on here running my mouth and i am not gonna start, I hope we beat LSU next week but if not we have had a good season so far and after next weeks game we still have a bowl game to go to for the Holiday’s, Next year we should be one of the top teams across the land i am hoping as well as land some premier runningbacks in the offseason i.e. Marshall and Gurley along with some OL’s. Great game.

GO DAWGS !!

Congrats to the Richt Family. They heard a lot of trash( me included) about all the heart ache of going 0-2. Winning 10 straight is a positive sign that he kept this team together, and with about 16 starters coming back and about 8 back ups who play a lot and looking like the #1 RB in the country on the way, things look pretty good. Congrats coach Richt.

Bugsquacher — in 1982 Georgia did beat Florida 44 -0. However there was a running back by the name of Herschel Walker that played in that game, no Worley and Henderson. I think the game you’re thinking of was in 1985 when Florida was ranked #1 and Georgia won 24 – 3.
